RNC 2012 Coverage Threatened By Isaac, Media Covers Storm

#RNC2012 Coverage Threatened By Isaac, Media Covers Storm
from huffingtonpost.com: Republicans gathering to formally nominate Mitt Romney in Tampa are having to grapple with a media that has one eye trained firmly on Tropical Storm Isaac — and is sending many of its biggest stars to cover the extreme weather.

15,000 journalists have traveled down to Florida to cover the Republican convention -- large parcels of media stars on the same plane was not an uncommon sight -- but, as of Monday, they don't have much to do. The storm has already forced the GOP to cancel the first night of its convention, and has the party worrying about how to get their message out if things get worse. As Reuters noted, "Romney could be robbed of some media attention - or worse, have images of convention festivities juxtaposed with searing split-screen television images of the storm's onslaught if Isaac dominates the news this week."

On Monday, at least, Isaac appeared to be winning. The morning's Washington Post was dominated by a huge picture of ominous waves. "Republicans gather, and so does the storm," a headline read. "All eyes on Isaac," an Associated Press article blared.

The network morning shows reflected the preeminence the storm has taken, leading their programs off with multiple packages of coverage. The choice between a potential hurricane passing through the Gulf Coast and a drama-free, stage-managed convention was a seemingly easy one.

"Isaac is the story of the morning," Robin Roberts observed on "Good Morning America." On "Today," Matt Lauer, who had been sent to Tampa for the Republican gathering, was taping outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, outfitted in a classic storm-covering windbreaker.

On "GMA" and "CBS This Morning," Diane Sawyer and Charlie Rose reported from an empty convention center. Anchors openly speculated about the potential media schizophrenia.

"They're going to be sharing the screen all week with the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina," Stephanopoulos said to Sawyer, who had just shown footage of herself trapped in a howling gust of wind earlier in the day.

On "Today," Lauer asked RNC chair Reince Priebus if he was worried about Isaac competing for headlines with the convention.

"It is what it is," Priebus said. "Our message is still going to be the same ... you have to report on this storm."

There was another more ominous sign for Republicans that Isaac was going to take precedence as the week drew on when CNN announced that two of its biggest names, Anderson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien, were headed to New Orleans to cover the storm's potential effect on the city. Both gained new prominence in 2005 when they reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Sam Feist, CNN's Washington bureau chief, was very direct in a tweet:

Fox News also sent Shep Smith to New Orleans.

In Slain Teenager’s Case, a Long Route to National Attention
In Slain Teenager’s Case, a Long Route to National Attentionfrom nytimes.com: Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was fatally shot on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla. The next day his death was a top story on the Fox-affiliated television station in Orlando, the closest big city to Sanford. Within a week it was being covered by newspapers around the state. But it took several weeks before the rest of the country found out. It was not until mid-March, after word spread on Facebook and Twitter, that the shooting of Trayvon by George Zimmerman, 28, was widely reported by the national news media, highlighting the complex ways that news does and does not travel in the Internet age.

dhs sets up unannounced checkpoint for 'operation shield'

"training exercise startles locals"
dhs sets up unannounced checkpoint for 'operation shield'from paul joseph watson: Residents of Leesburg, Florida were shocked to see their local Social Security office turned into a random Homeland Security checkpoint Tuesday morning, as DHS officers armed with semiautomatic rifles and accompanied by sniffer dogs checked identifications of locals. “With their blue and white SUVs circled around the Main Street office, at least one official was posted on the door with a semiautomatic rifle, randomly checking identifications. And other officers, some with K-9s, sifted through the building,” reports the Daily Commercial. The activity was part of Operation Shield, an unannounced drill conducted by the DHS’ Federal Protective Service centered around “detecting the presence of unauthorized persons and potentially disruptive or dangerous activities.”

another mass animal die-off: millions of bees mysteriously die in florida

millions of bees mysteriously die in floridafrom cba/ap: Florida officials are abuzz as to how millions of honey bees were killed in Brevard County. Several beekeepers in the county have reported lost colonies this week. Charles Smith of Smith Family Honey Company told Stuart News Thursday he lost 400 beehives. He says the bees appeared to have been poisoned. “I’ll never get completely compensated for this unless someone handed me 400 beehives,” Smith told Stuart News. “I lost the bees, the ability to make honey and the ability to sell the bees.” Smith told Florida Today that he lost $150,000 from the incident. State officials are testing the bees to determine what type of chemicals contributed to their deaths. Experts say pesticides might be behind the lost beehives. “The fact that it was so widespread and so rapid, I think you can pretty much rule out disease,” Bill Kern, an entomologist with the University of Florida’s Research and Education Center, told Florida Today. “It happened essentially almost in one day. Usually diseases affect adults or the brood, you don’t have something that kills them both.” The case in Micco, 18 miles south of Melbourne, is being investigated by state agriculture officials and the sheriff’s office.

murder/mayhem: dougherty gang, fugitive siblings, captured in coloradofrom abcnews: The three bystanders who chased and helped capture a member of the fugitive Dougherty Gang after Wednesday's high-speed police chase ended in a crash had no idea who they were helping to apprehend, they said on "Good Morning America" today. "We heard the shots, we see all of the officers coming down the on-ramp with the guns drawn and the M-16s out, surrounding this car that's up on the guardrail, and we're like, 'Man, what's happening?' You don't hear that every day," said Dave Dallaguardia, one of the three highway workers who helped catch the runaway Dougherty. It's unclear which brother they captured. Lee Dougherty, who is a 29-year-old stripper, and heavily armed brother Ryan, 21, and half-brother Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26, had become the focus of a manhunt that stretched from Florida to Colorado in the past week.

'exercise mailed fist': largest ever marine corps drill on US east coast

multiple foreign armies involved in massive drill*
'exercise mailed fist': largest ever marine corps drill on US east coastfrom cnn: It's mid-June, a perfect time to visit the beach to watch porpoises play in the surf or seagulls strut the sand -- or you could watch a formation of Marine Corps warplanes darting over the shore at hundreds of miles per hour. But don't worry -- the United States hasn't declared war on your family's beach house. It's just part of a major Marine Corps exercise called Exercise Mailed Fist (translation: armored fist).

The exercise is designed to test the capability of every type of Marine Corps aircraft, including MV-22 Ospreys and F/A 18 Hornets, as well as some Navy ships and Air Force planes. The drill will stretch from Quantico Marine Base in northern Virginia to the Navy's Pinecastle Bombing Range in Florida. With thousands of Marines and other service members involved, it's the biggest such drill ever on the U.S. East Coast.

epa helps mainstream media obscure truth about radiation exposure

govt responds to nuclear accident by trying to raise acceptable radiation levels & pretending that radiation is good for us...
epa helps mainstream media obscure truth about radiation exposurefrom activist post: As Americans focus on March Madness and Dancing With the Stars instead of the radioactive plume spreading all across the country, the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is attempting to make the mainstream media cover up of the Fukushima cloud a bit easier.

The agency now notorious for its infamous claim that the air was safe to breathe after 9/11 is now seeking to raise the PAGs (Protective Action Guides) to levels vastly higher than those at which they are currently set allowing for more radioactive contamination of the environment and the general public in the event of a radioactive disaster...

According to PEER (Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility), the new standards would drastically raise the levels of radiation allowed in food, water, air, and the general environment. PEER, a national organization of local, state, and federal employees who had access to internal EPA emails, claims that the new standards will result in a “nearly 1000-fold increase for exposure to strontium-90, a 3000 to 100,000-fold hike for exposure to iodine-131; and an almost 25,000 rise for exposure to radioactive nickel-63” in drinking water. This information, as well as the emails themselves were published by Collapsenet on March 24...

As of the time of this writing, a toxic cloud of radiation has not only reached the US West Coast, but has spread all the way across the country to states like South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Massachussetts. Both the US government and the mainstream media have largely denied any risk associated with the radiation and have actively engaged in covering up the extent to which it has spread across the country.

gadsden flags start disputes around the country

gadsden flags start disputes around the countryfrom the upshot: An Arizona man is in trouble with his homeowners' association over flying the Gadsden flag, which features a coiled rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on Me." The flag has been adopted by members of the tea party movement for its association with the American Revolution, but Andy McDonel tells the New York Times that he has hung the flag from his roof simply for its historical significance.

Arizona has a state statute that allows Arizonans to fly "the Stars and Stripes, the state flag, flags representing Indian nations as well as the official flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard," the Times reports.

McDonel's homeowners' association is strictly interpreting that law to ban the flying of any other flags, including the Gadsden. The American Civil Liberties Union is defending McDonel, saying the homeowners' group is taking too strict a view of the statute and restricting McDonel's right to free speech. McDonel is chronicling his struggle on a blog, where he is asking for donations for a potential legal battle. McDonel isn't the only person to run into a dispute over the historic flag.
