RNC 2012 Coverage Threatened By Isaac, Media Covers Storm

from huffingtonpost.com: Republicans gathering to formally nominate Mitt Romney in Tampa are having to grapple with a media that has one eye trained firmly on Tropical Storm Isaac — and is sending many of its biggest stars to cover the extreme weather.

15,000 journalists have traveled down to Florida to cover the Republican convention -- large parcels of media stars on the same plane was not an uncommon sight -- but, as of Monday, they don't have much to do. The storm has already forced the GOP to cancel the first night of its convention, and has the party worrying about how to get their message out if things get worse. As Reuters noted, "Romney could be robbed of some media attention - or worse, have images of convention festivities juxtaposed with searing split-screen television images of the storm's onslaught if Isaac dominates the news this week."

On Monday, at least, Isaac appeared to be winning. The morning's Washington Post was dominated by a huge picture of ominous waves. "Republicans gather, and so does the storm," a headline read. "All eyes on Isaac," an Associated Press article blared.

The network morning shows reflected the preeminence the storm has taken, leading their programs off with multiple packages of coverage. The choice between a potential hurricane passing through the Gulf Coast and a drama-free, stage-managed convention was a seemingly easy one.

"Isaac is the story of the morning," Robin Roberts observed on "Good Morning America." On "Today," Matt Lauer, who had been sent to Tampa for the Republican gathering, was taping outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, outfitted in a classic storm-covering windbreaker.

On "GMA" and "CBS This Morning," Diane Sawyer and Charlie Rose reported from an empty convention center. Anchors openly speculated about the potential media schizophrenia.

"They're going to be sharing the screen all week with the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina," Stephanopoulos said to Sawyer, who had just shown footage of herself trapped in a howling gust of wind earlier in the day.

On "Today," Lauer asked RNC chair Reince Priebus if he was worried about Isaac competing for headlines with the convention.

"It is what it is," Priebus said. "Our message is still going to be the same ... you have to report on this storm."

There was another more ominous sign for Republicans that Isaac was going to take precedence as the week drew on when CNN announced that two of its biggest names, Anderson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien, were headed to New Orleans to cover the storm's potential effect on the city. Both gained new prominence in 2005 when they reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Sam Feist, CNN's Washington bureau chief, was very direct in a tweet:

Fox News also sent Shep Smith to New Orleans.

Report Claims People Still Discover New Music Via Old Media

Nielsen Music 360 Report Says "I Can't Live Without My Radio"

from spin.com: People may be curious enough to Shazam 5 billion songs (11 million of which were Gotye's), but a new report conducted by Nielsen claims that radio remains the No. 1 way people discover new music. In fact, almost half of the 3,000 consumers surveyed — online, no less! — made that claim. The next most popular music referrals come from friends and relatives and YouTube, which, by the way, is the main way teenagers listen to music.

Other interesting stats include that after a recommendation from a friend, the information on music blogs (hi there!) is the most likely influencer in purchasing music, followed by brand endorsement. A tiny fraction of those who responded, 8 percent, share music on social-networking sites, while only 6 percent claim to upload music. (The report, as released, does not include any information on how many people illegally download or upload music, nor does it address other forms of file-sharing such as torrenting.)

The most popular genre of music among males is apparently "rock," which again could sort of mean anything (metal, indie, punk…rap?), while Top 40 was the top-reported genre among females — though that majority was only 15 percent, which leaves a lot to interpretation. As far as what mediums of music most people buy, consumers polled felt digital albums were a better value than CDs, but only by an 8 percent margin. And CDs are extremely unpopular among teens (duh!): Only 36 percent of teens have felt a CD was worth their lunch money in the past year, while 51 percent have used gift cards or their parents' plastic to download music in the same timeframe.

Only 7 percent of 18 to 24 year olds claim to buy posters, and while that's not entirely useful information, it could mean that most of those massive pieces of Pink Floyd and Bob Marley artwork in college dorms are either purchased at Target or maybe come with the space these days.

And last, but not least in terms of reinvigorating the economy of music, a majority of older people (41 percent of respondents ages 55 and up) have reduced their spending. Now that they've finally gotten around to replacing all their old REO Speedwagon LPs, apparently the thrill of finding new music isn't worth acting on. Maybe there's better value in replacing their Bee-Gee's 45s for under a buck.

Over-Sensitivity To Barack Jokes: Is Obama Really Off-Limits?

Lovitz, Carvey Lament Lack of Comedians Targeting Obama
from brasschecktv.com: Comedians Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey shared a moment commiserating the roadblocks in place when attempting make jokes about or at the expense of President Barack Obama. Lovitz, who was filling in as host of Dennis Miller's radio show, asked Carvey what his thoughts were concerning that idea that certain groups - GLAAD being an example he gave - go after comics for their material by attempting to argue about what, exactly, constitutes as a "joke."

"Well, I think it's scary and dangerous," said Carvey. "I think free speech is probably the coolest thing we have in this country and, again, you can label it hate speech and dismiss it, and then you're allowed to censor it." Later, Carvey said he realizes there was a certain level of "sensitivity," as he described it, surrounding Barack Obama given that he is the country's first black president, but that "over time it becomes kind of knee-jerk and patronizing not to satirize the President."

Lovitz then asked Carvey what he thinks about the argument that SNL - their former stomping ground - doesn't make fun of Obama, and, what's more, will only make fun of Republican politicians. Carvey responded by saying that, in his own experience, he's had success with Obama jokes when he's been able to find a particularly funny angle to use as a platform, much like with his widely-known "not gonna do it… wouldn't be prudent" George H.W. Bush catchphrase. But when SNL attempted to poke fun at Obama in New York, the joke "bombed." He seemed to be saying that the problem was not the joke or its subject so much as the context and the audience present.

'The Newsroom' Is The Inverse of 'Network'

False Catharsis In HBO's 'Newsroom'*

from avclub.com: Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO series The Newsroom begins with what many will call a Network moment, when a news anchor, finally unshackled by the chains of bland neutrality, comes out and says what he really thinks. In this case, it’s Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), a man so determined not to alienate viewers of any political persuasion that he’s been dubbed “the Jay Leno of news anchors.” When asked during a panel discussion, “What makes America the greatest country in the world?,” Will finally comes to a point when the standard bromides from the left (Diversity!) and the right (Freedom!) are intolerable, and it’s time for everyone to acknowledge that, in fact, we’re a nation in decline. And that we only lead the world in incarcerated citizens. And that the Millennials are the “worst—period—generation—period—ever—period.” And that we once “reached for the stars” and were “informed by great men” and blah blah blah fuckity blah.

But really, this is not a Network moment, but an “Aaron Sorkin moment,” those oft-occurring rants when a hardened cynic is revealed as a bruised idealist. In Network, Peter Finch’s “mad as hell” speech lands him at the center of a three-ring media circus, surrounded by fortune-tellers, gossips, and a rabid studio audience. The Newsroom may pivot on a similar breakdown, but it’s the inverse of Network: Telling the unvarnished truth brings Will to the more dignified and righteous place of being his real self, a modern-day Cronkite or Murrow who can drop the fair-and-balanced pose and “speak truth to stupid” when the occasion warrants it. For Sorkin skeptics, this is very dangerous territory.
