super congress debt committee an unsurprising fail
deficit supercommittee officially admits failure
from forbes: In a statement released after the bell, the so-called budget deficit Supercommittee officially announced it failed to produce $1.2 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. Their failure, anticipated by many, led to a substantial market plunge on Monday and will supposedly trigger the automatic sequester proposition, which is designed to enact $1.2 trillion in cuts, evenly split between defense and domestic spending.
destined to fail super committee completely fails
from washington times: For the uninitiated, America is drowning in debt. Barack Obama is piling on debt at an exponential rate while blaming everybody else for refusing to balance the books while he spends America into bankruptcy.
debt committee calls it quits without a deal
from cnn: Well, it's official. The congressional debt committee is so over. To no one's surprise, the bipartisan panel called it quits on Monday without reaching any agreement on debt reduction, let alone the $4 trillion "grand bargain" that budget experts say is needed at a minimum to get a handle on the country's long-term fiscal problems... The hope, of course, was that the super committee -- given extraordinary and unprecedented powers -- would tackle the tough problems facing the country's budget, such as rising health costs and an unwieldy tax code no one likes.
epic failure: the supercommittee was a super joke*

postal service on verge of financial collapse, saturday delivery doomed
from allgov: The dire warnings about the financial state of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) may soon become dire reality unless Congress can agree to new financing for the cash-strapped agency. In what has become an annual refrain, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe on Tuesday told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs that the USPS situation is “extremely serious,” and warned that the agency will default if lawmakers don’t act by the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
The most pressing worry is that the Postal Service lacks sufficient funds to make a $5.5 billion payment due this month to finance the future health care of retired postal workers. Unlike other government entities, the Postal Service is required to make health care payments in advance.
By early 2012, however, the USPS could find itself so short on funding that it might have to shut down entirely unless Congress takes emergency action to stabilize its finances.
Donahoe already has called for a series of cost-cutting measures to shrink the agency’s deficit, which will reach $9.2 billion this fiscal year. These include eliminating Saturday mail delivery, shuttering as many as 3,700 postal offices and laying off 120,000 workers (almost one-fifth of the USPS work force). He has also asked to pull the USPS out of the federal employee health care plan and allow it to create its own. In addition, he requested the return of $6.9 billion in overpayments to the Federal Employee Retirement System.
The Obama administration has asked Congress to grant a 90-day extension for the retiree health care payment.
The Postal Service has been hemorrhaging money in recent years, in large part because more Americans are now using the Internet, electronic-bill paying and email instead of relying on traditional mail service.
This year, the USPS will handle about 167 billion pieces of mail, which would represent a decrease of 22% from five years ago.

dow closes down 633 points after final plunge
video: obamapocalypse aa+ speech on manic monday
The Dow Jones industrial average finished the day down 633 points Monday after a full-day sell-off accelerated in the final hour of trading as investors struggled to absorb Standard & Poor's decision to downgrade the United States' credit rating. Investors piled out of stocks and into a few "safe havens," such as gold and Treasury bonds. The appetite for Treasury bonds suggests that the Standard & Poor's downgrade has not shaken investors' faith in U.S. bonds. Market experts said the Monday sell-off was sparked by the S&P announcement but was motivated more by growing concerns about the weakness of the global economy.

kelly school shooter: 'this is a drill & these are blanks.'
please read the full article for more on this bizarre story
from deadlinelive.info: On Friday, October 8th, Brendan O’Rourke entered Kelly Elementary schoolyard during noon recess, carrying a .357 magnum and firing on students, allegedly striking two of them in the arm. After firing six shots, O’Rourke fled the schoolyard and attempted to reload his handgun. A construction crew working at the school cafeteria was able to catch O’Rourke and hold him until police arrived on the scene. Stephanie Durkee, a campus monitor at the school for 17 years, said O’Rourke was yelling when he entered the playground and started shooting. Durkee said O’Rourke shouted “Death to Obama! Kill all the little fags! Death to them!” Durkee said when she asked him what he was doing, he replied, “This is a drill and these are blanks.”

econocrash: welfare, debtors' prisons & dying communities
walmarts swell with poor people once a month at midnight — when the govt's electronic dole payout goes through
from usatoday: Once a month, just after midnight, the beeping checkout scanners at a Walmart just off Interstate 95 come alive in a chorus of financial desperation. Here and at grocery stores across the country, the chimes come just after food stamps and other monthly government benefits drop into the accounts of shoppers who have been rationing things like milk, ground beef and toilet paper and can finally stock up again. Shoppers mill around the store after 11 p.m., killing time until their accounts are replenished. When midnight strikes, they rush for the checkout counter.
pro-foreclosure bill slip through congress to obama's desk
debtors' prisons make a comeback…in the US
from allgov: America’s jails are increasingly becoming de facto debtors’ prisons as the legal system levies more fees than ever on individuals who wind up behind bars simply because they can’t pay their bills or the administrative penalties imposed by judges. Both the Brennan Center for Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have issued reports on the rise of debt-related incarceration, noting that courts are administering more fees these days as a way to make up for budget shortfalls.
postal workers union ballots lost in mail
dying communities see salvation in new prisons
from ap: Although rural communities have successfully lobbied for — and built — prisons for years, not many studies have been done on their economic impact. Some studies indicate slight economic gains for some prison towns, according to a Congressional Research Service report in April. Others that have become prison anchors might have not grown as fast as those without prisons. Florence, Colo., where a federal prison complex went up in 1994, was once a major oil producer and gold-smelting center and now has some new businesses. New federal prisons have recently started hiring in West Virginia, which has seen a decline in coal jobs, and in an impoverished farming community in California. Others are being built in Mississippi and Alabama.

bp-owned alaska oil pipeline shut after spill
from reuters: The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, partly owned by BP, shut down on Tuesday after spilling several thousand barrels of crude oil into backup containers, drastically cutting supply down the main artery between refineries and Alaska's oilfields. The accident comes at a difficult time for BP - the largest single owner of the pipeline operator, holding 47% - as it struggles to plug a gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well. The shutdown followed a series of mishaps that resulted from a scheduled fire-command system test at Pump Station 9, about 100 miles south of Fairbanks, said Alyeska Pipeline Service Co, the operator of the 800-mile oil line.
