oil trades near six-week high on iran threat to crude transport

from businessweek: Oil traded near the highest level in six weeks after Iran threatened to block crude transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, increasing concern that global supplies will be curbed amid shrinking U.S. stockpiles.

Futures were little changed after rising for a sixth day yesterday, the longest run of advances since November 2010. Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency cited Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi as saying the country would bar shipments through the strait if sanctions are imposed on its oil exports. U.S. oil inventories probably dropped for a third week, a Bloomberg News survey showed before an Energy Department report this week.

“There’s been a significant decline in inventories,” said Gavin Wendt, a senior resource analyst at Mine Life Pty in Sydney. “If that trend continues, combined with the Iranian situation, it could be significant in driving oil prices even higher.”

from cba/ap: Florida officials are abuzz as to how millions of honey bees were killed in Brevard County. Several beekeepers in the county have reported lost colonies this week. Charles Smith of Smith Family Honey Company told Stuart News Thursday he lost 400 beehives. He says the bees appeared to have been poisoned. “I’ll never get completely compensated for this unless someone handed me 400 beehives,” Smith told Stuart News. “I lost the bees, the ability to make honey and the ability to sell the bees.” Smith told Florida Today that he lost $150,000 from the incident. State officials are testing the bees to determine what type of chemicals contributed to their deaths. Experts say pesticides might be behind the lost beehives. “The fact that it was so widespread and so rapid, I think you can pretty much rule out disease,” Bill Kern, an entomologist with the University of Florida’s Research and Education Center, told Florida Today. “It happened essentially almost in one day. Usually diseases affect adults or the brood, you don’t have something that kills them both.” The case in Micco, 18 miles south of Melbourne, is being investigated by state agriculture officials and the sheriff’s office.

financial collapse of greece: canary in the coalmine for global economy?

the economic collapse blog: The rest of the world needs to sit up and take notice of what is going on in Greece right now. This is what can happen when you allow government debt to spiral out of control. Once it becomes clear that you can't pay your debts, a financial collapse can happen very suddenly and you start losing your sovereignty to those that you must turn to for financial help. So is the financial collapse of Greece the "canary in the coal mine" for the global economy? EU finance ministers have given the Greek government two weeks from Monday to approve another round of brutal austerity measures. If the austerity measures are not approved, Greece will not receive the next bailout installment of 12 billion euros. even good economic news can't help the greenback now

from wsj: Summer may be on its way and Osama bin Laden may be dead, but that doesn’t mean the sun is going to shine on the dollar. Ben Bernanke made sure of that. The Fed Chairman’s insistence last week that U.S. ultra-loose monetary policy is here to stay not only indicated his lack of confidence in the recovery but confirmed fears the U.S. Federal Reserve is falling behind the curve. As a result, not even good news will help the U.S. currency now... All this means that even good economic news will not save the dollar now. The true test could well come on Friday with the latest unemployment numbers, data that traditionally should give the dollar direction. But, if the Fed is saying no change is in sight, even strong non-farm payrolls won’t stop the dollar from floundering. This whole “good news is bad news” theme was apparent as Osama bin Laden’s assassination by U.S. forces in Pakistan broke.

from cbs local: With gas prices pushing $4 a gallon, a lot of people are trying to stretch their dollar at the gas pump, but some of them are trying to stretch it a little too far. Since the beginning of March, AAA has seen an 18 percent increase in the number of roadside calls for people running out of gas. “I never put a lot in because I can’t afford to fill it up,” Leo Greek, a stranded motorist, said. He says he’s not even sure how much it would cost to fill up his truck these days because he hasn’t done it for a while. He gets only what he needs and today he underestimated. “It’s frustrating,” Greek said. “I can’t believe it has to be that expensive, but I know everybody’s going through it.” According to AAA, gas prices in the Pittsburgh area have gone up 26 cents per gallon in the last month. “Before it was more absentminded than anything else,” Jim Krebs with Brighton Service said. “But now, I believe that’s what it is. I believe people are like, ‘Man, I got to buy something else so I’m not going to put gas in the car. I should be able to make it,’ and they don’t.”

Take hunger and thirst and the rising cost to remove it; add outrageously high oil prices, unemployment, poverty and a recovery that has collapsed right in front of our eyes and you will see a tidal wave of instability and turmoil in the United States. For now we can watch it on our big screen TV’s and say that it is situation normal in the coming Armageddon. It is easily written off as a fluke or growing pains in countries that are “yearning” for the freedom we have. Our freedom is a state of mind as we pretend to think that we are still in the lap of luxury. We look at the high definition images on the screen of the desperate and poor revolting and it is akin to watching fish in an aquarium devour each other. The television news won’t tell you that, for these unfortunate people, the end of the world is now. They won’t tell you that you are witnessing the last labored breaths of a dying planet. They won’t ask: which civilization will be wiped out next and you will probably not even realize that it might be you being seen through the fish eyed lens of some other ignorant person living in what he thinks is the lap of luxury.

gaddafi flees libya, gives 15-second 'speech' amid uprising

from raw replay: As his government increasingly fell out beneath him, 41-year Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi struggled to keep projecting an image of power. After a day of rumors about whether he was still in the country, he was said to be planning a major speech Monday, but then appeared on state television for approximately 15 seconds, merely to claim that he was in Tripoli.
