Manson Photo Shows 'Helter Skelter' Cult Leader at 77

from cbsnews.com: New photos have been released of Charles Manson, the leader of the "Manson Family" cult responsible for a series of brutal murders in California in 1969. The release of the new photos come a week before his parole hearing. At the request of CNN, the California Department of Corrections released two photos reportedly taken in June 2011 at the state prison in Corcoran, Calif. A department of corrections spokesperson says the new photos were taken due to a change in Manson's appearance, CNN reports. Manson originally received a death sentence in the infamous murder of actress Sharon Tate and six others by a group of his followers. But his death sentence was changed to life in prison after California's death penalty was overturned for a period during the 1970s. Manson, whose parole hearing is schedule for April 11, has been denied parole 11 times, CNN reports.

The reason isn’t because it is a scary article, or an article that I have no faith in. I am reticent because of the subject matter. There are many cynical people who listen to shows like mine and read columns that are similar to mine that believe that everything that goes on in Hollywood is a distraction... It seems that there is a demon loose in Hollywood, one that has scared the Quaids and has somehow given the Hollywood Stars a reason to worry. It seems that from the refrain of a song, to a programmed madman telling his death squad to seal their murders with blood. The piggies are getting a damn good whacking. Charles Manson once said that back in the 1960’s it was fashionable to be crazy, now everyone is crazy.

for the last couple of years, the three volume set of 'sinister forces: a grimoire of american political witchcraft' has always been within arm's reach. i've learned that whenever something in the news has reverberations back through the history/mystery of 20th century america, i can just jump to the indices & start to see some of the dots connect...

during the last weekend of september '09, there was a strange confluence of news stories concerning the death of a manson family murderer, the revelations about disturbing sexcrimes in the occult california music scene & then the seemingly sudden arrest of roman polanski for his own infamous sexcrime.

now the polanski polemic, as i've called it, has become perfect fodder for the culture wars: it's middle america vs hollywood. and while the average person may know the water cooler talking points, most of these discussions are long on moralizing & short on the shadowy substance... those "names to conjure with", the "dates that have resonance" & the things "that scream out for an explanation where none can be provided."

one of the most incredible examples: on june 5, 1968, roman polanski & sharon tate attended a dinner party at director john frankenheimer's house where the guest of honor would have his last supper. that guest was robert francis kennedy & he was driven to the ambassador hotel later that night by the director of 'the manchurian candidate'... and, did you know that polanski had john phillips, of the mamas & the papas, investigated for his possible involvement in the murder of sharon tate? ... add to this mix squeaky fromme, scientology, robert evans, west virginia, aleister crowley, disneyland, and of course, the specter that haunts this american house: charles manson.

when i began to see these red flags, i immediately reached out to our guest & author of the amazing 'sinister forces': peter levenda. he has written numerous other books on our hidden history, like his recent 'secret temple: masons, mysteries & the founding of america'. levenda is an authority on these subjects & has also been featured in numerous documentaries concerning the 'unholy alliance' of nazis, the occult & US.

from ap: The Charles Manson follower convicted of attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford is set to be released from a Texas federal prison later this month after serving more than 30 years behind bars. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was a 26-year-old disciple of the cult murderer Manson when she aimed a semiautomatic pistol at Ford in September 1975 in Sacramento, Calif. A Secret Service agent grabbed her and Ford was unhurt. The Federal Bureau of Prisons and the court-appointed attorney who represented Fromme at trial say the now 60-year-old is to be released from the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, TX on Aug. 16.

from ap: A new documentary about Charles Manson may feature a scene shot in a section of Martinsburg that looks a lot like San Francisco. Pamela Haynes, director of the West Virginia Film Office, says producers provided reference photos of the Haight-Ashbury district, where Manson spent time in the 1960s.

She says it was the spitting image of North Queen Street, where a film crew worked Monday. Sirens Media is producing the film for MSNBC. Faith Gaskins, the re-creation producer, says other scenes have been shot in Jessup and Silver Spring, Md.

The untitled film is expected to air next year, the 40th anniversary of the murders of actress Sharon Tate and six other people by Manson followers. Manson is played by Charlie Davidson, an actor from Silver Spring.

from ap: Nearly 40 years ago, Susan Atkins was a leading character in one of the most horrific chapters in California history. On Tuesday, the former follower of Charles Manson sought to end her story on her own terms: by being allowed to go home. The state parole board denied that request.

Atkins, convicted in the slayings of actress Sharon Tate and others in 1969, is dying of brain cancer and asked that she be granted compassionate release from prison. She wants to spend her final months surrounded by family and friends, not prison guards. "Susan has served a life sentence," Virginia Seals, Atkins' sister-in-law, said in arguing that the state's longest-serving female inmate be freed. "This is about her death."

In a unanimous decision, the California Board of Parole Hearings denied the request Tuesday. Her lawyer said he has filed a separate motion in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking his client's release, anyway.

new graves found at manson ranch

from metro: More grave sites have been discovered at a ranch where mass murderer Charles Manson lived. Investigators had always feared that Manson and his band of followers - the Manson Family - may have carried out more killings. It is thought more bodies may be buried at the ranch where Manson, now 73, went into hiding after his cult's killings... One Manson Family member, Susan Atkins, is said to have told her cell mate that there were "three people out in the desert that they done in".

A team of forensic experts has returned to the site with a specially trained dog and the latest technology. The group of experts, from California State University and Tennessee's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, used a magnetometer – an instrument that can see underground... Marc Wise, an Oak Ridge researcher, said: "There's definitely something down there." The scientists want the sites to be excavated... Manson convinced his followers to carry out the murder spree. He is currently in prison and is not eligible for parole until 2012.

from ap: Sara Jane Moore, who took a shot at President Ford in a 1975 assassination attempt, was released from prison Monday.

Moore, 77, had served about 30 years of a life sentence when she was released from the federal prison in Dublin, east of San Francisco, said Felicia Ponce, a spokeswoman with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Ponce did not know the details of Moore's release.

Moore was 40 feet away from Ford outside a hotel in San Francisco when she fired a shot at him on Sept. 22, 1975. As she raised her .38-caliber revolver, Oliver Sipple, a disabled former Marine standing next to her, pushed up her arm as the gun went off, and the bullet flew over Ford's head by several feet.

In recent interviews, Moore said she regretted her actions.

"I am very glad I did not succeed. I know now that I was wrong to try," Moore said a year ago in an interview with KGO-TV.

Just 17 days before Moore's attempt, Ford had survived the first attempt on his life in Sacramento by Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson.

Moore said she was blinded by her radical political views at the time, convinced that the government had declared war on the left.

"I was functioning, I think, purely on adrenalin and not thinking clearly. I have often said that I had put blinders on and I was only listening to what I wanted to hear," she told KGO.

Moore's confusing background - which included five failed marriages, name changes and involvement with political groups like the Symbionese Liberation Army - baffled the public and even her own defense attorney during her trial.

"I never got a satisfactory answer from her as to why she did it," said retired federal public defender James F. Hewitt. "There was just bizarre stuff, and she would never tell anyone anything about her background."

Moore was born Sara Jane Kahn in Charleston, W.Va. She acted in high school plays and dreamed of being a film actress before going through a series of marriages, beginning with nuptials to Marine sergeant Wallace Elvin Anderson in 1949...

In the 1970s, Moore began working for People in Need, a free food ransom arrangement established by millionaire Randy Hearst in return for his daughter Patty, who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974. She soon became involved with radical leftists, ex-convicts and other members of San Francisco's counterculture. At this time, Moore became an informant to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Moore has said she fired at Ford because she thought she would be killed once it was disclosed that she was an FBI informant. The agency ended its relationship with her about four months before the shooting.

"I was going to go down anyway," she said in a 1982 interview with the San Jose Mercury News. "And if I was going to go down, I was going to do it my way. If the government was going to kill me, I was going to make some kind of statement."

Moore was sent to a West Virginia women's prison in 1977. Two years later, she escaped, but was captured several hours later.
