jfk assassination: 48th anniversary of an american coup

'lost' jfk assassination tapes on sale
from ap: A long-lost version of the Air Force One recordings made in the immediate aftermath of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, with more than 30 minutes of additional material not in the official version in the government's archives, has been found and is for sale.

new book indicts cia in kennedy assassination
new book indicts cia in kennedy assassinationfrom cisionwire: New York Times number one bestselling author and JFK historian Mark Lane tried the only U.S. court case in which jurors concluded that the CIA plotted the murder of President Kennedy, but there were always missing pieces: How did the CIA control Dallas police and Secret Service agents on the ground in Dealey Plaza? How did federal authorities prevent the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee on Assassinations from discovering the truth about the complicity of the CIA? Now, Lane tells all in his explosive new book – Last Word: My Indictment of the CIA in the Murder of JFK – with exclusive new interviews, sworn statements and meticulous new research (including interviews with Oliver Stone, Dallas Police deputy sheriffs, Robert K. Tanenbaum, and Secret Service agent Abraham Bolden) Lane finds out first hand exactly what went on the day JFK was assassinated.

'the umbrella man'
from errol morris: For years, I’ve wanted to make a movie about the John F. Kennedy assassination. Not because I thought I could prove that it was a conspiracy, or that I could prove it was a lone gunman, but because I believe that by looking at the assassination, we can learn a lot about the nature of investigation and evidence. Why, after 48 years, are people still quarreling and quibbling about this case? What is it about this case that has led not to a solution, but to the endless proliferation of possible solutions? Years ago, Josiah Thompson, known as Tink, a young, Yale-educated Kierkegaard scholar, quit his day job as a professor of philosophy at Haverford College to write the definitive book on the Zapruder film — “Six Seconds in Dallas.” Tink became a private detective, and came to work with many of the same private investigators I had also worked with in the 1980s. We had so much in common — philosophy, P.I. work and an obsessive interest in the complexities of reality. But we had never met. Last year, I finally got to meet and interview Tink Thompson. I hope his interview can become the first part of an extended series on the Kennedy assassination. This film is but a small segment of my six-hour interview with Tink.

lbj on jfk assassination: "it’s all a conspiracy"
lbj on jfk assassination: 'it’s all a conspiracy'from huffington post: This month will mark the 46th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. A recently declassified oral history by Brigadier General Godfrey McHugh, President Kennedy's military aide on the Dallas trip, sheds new light on the critical hours after the shooting. McHugh makes startling claims about Lyndon Johnson's behavior in the wake of the assassination.

The interview with McHugh, originally conducted for the John F. Kennedy Library in 1978, remained closed for 31 years. It was finally declassified in the spring of 2009. I just happened to be working at the Kennedy Library on the day the interview was opened to the public and have used it for the first time in my new book, The Kennedy Assassination: 24 Hours After...

McHugh, like most members of the Kennedy entourage, did not know that Johnson was onboard. They believed that the new president was on his own plane flying back to Washington. If LBJ was on the plane, McHugh wanted to see for himself. Since he had not seen Johnson in the aisle -- and at 6'4" Johnson would be tough to miss -- McHugh assumed that he must then be in the bedroom. When he checked there Johnson was nowhere to be seen. The only place on the plane he had not inspected was the bathroom in the presidential bedroom.

What McHugh claimed to have witnessed next was shocking. "I walked in the toilet, in the powder room, and there he was hiding, with the curtain closed," McHugh recalled. He claimed that LBJ was crying, "They're going to get us all. It's a plot. It's a plot. It's going to get us all.'" According to the General, Johnson "was hysterical, sitting down on the john there alone in this thing."

dartmouth scientist says oswald rifle photo real

from huffpo: The backyard photo of Lee Harvey Oswald holding a rifle and Marxist newspaper was called a fake by Oswald when he was interrogated by Dallas police after his arrest. The image had fueled conspiracy theorists who said the image must have been faked because of the unusual shadows. Now, Dartmouth Professor Hany Farid, a computer scientist and authority on forensic imaging, has determined definitively that the image is, indeed, real. In this YouTube video, he demonstrates how three dimensional modeling was used in reaching his conclusion. Professor Farid's finding will be published in the peer-reviewed academic journal "Perception". Here is the AP report.

'legendary' newsman walter cronkite, 92, dies at home

...now walter cronkite can truly be
"glad to sit on the right hand of satan"...

'legendary' newsman walter cronkite, 92, dies at homefrom dpa: Iconic news anchor Walter Cronkite, whose journalism shaped US views and policies from World War II to the Vietnam War died Friday at the age of 92, his family said.

Cronkite, who was born in St Joseph, Missouri, in 1916, had been ill for several months with cerebrovascular disease. Among the many paying tribute to him were President Barack Obama and his predecessor George W Bush.

Often called "the most trusted man in America," Cronkite's deliberate reporting and analysis, together with his rare displays of emotion made him a key observer and interpreter of seminal moments in US history including the Kennedy assassination, the civil rights struggle and the moon landing.

Regarded as one of the all time greats of US journalism, Cronkite also played a decisive role in establishing television as a leading news medium and in defining the standards for news anchors during his stint as anchor at CBS News from 1962 to 1981.

Obama called him "a voice of certainty in an uncertain world... For decades, Walter Cronkite was the most trusted voice in America. His rich baritone reached millions of living rooms every night," said Obama. "He invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down."

"Walter Cronkite was an icon of American journalism who shaped his profession in countless ways during his decades on the air. Tonight, his family is in our thoughts and prayers," Bush said.

"It is impossible to imagine CBS News, journalism or indeed America without Walter Cronkite," Sean McManus, president of CBS News, said in a statement. "More than just the best and most trusted anchor in history, he guided America through our crises, tragedies and also our victories and greatest moments."

Cronkite established his legendary reputation with his marathon coverage of the assassination of president John F Kennedy in 1963. His sympathetic reporting of the civil rights struggle was key in winning over American public opinion, while his conclusion that the Vietnam War was unwinnable in 1968 eroded the support of middle America for the controversial conflict. "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America," said President Lyndon Johnson after Cronkite concluded that the war could not be won.

Katie Couric, the current anchor of the CBS Evening News, said Cronkite was so trusted "because he exhibited a sense of purpose and compassion, night after night. He was the personification of excellence."

walter cronkite: most trusted asset of operation mockingbird
walter cronkite: most trusted asset of operation mockingbirdfrom kurt nimmo: It is impossible to imagine CBS News, journalism or indeed America without Walter Cronkite,” said Sean McManus, president of CBS News, on the passing on Walter Cronkite. “More than just the best and most trusted anchor in history, he guided America through our crises, tragedies and also our victories and greatest moments.”

I wonder if Mr. McManus knew the real Cronkite — Cronkite the a former intelligence officer who was lured away from his UPI Moscow desk by Operation Mockingbird’s Phil Graham.

Of course he did. Because the corporate media, at least at the level Walter Cronkite occupied, is rife with spooks, government agents, and disinfo operatives. The CIA has “important assets” inside every major news publication in the country, a fact established by numerous FOIA documents. A rare glimpse was also provided by Frank Church’s committee in the mid-70s.

Some of the journalists working the CIA’s side of the street “were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors-without-portfolio for their country,” Carl Bernstein wrote in an article published in Rolling Stone in October, 1977. “Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested it the derring-do of the spy business as in filing articles, and, the smallest category, full-time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad.”

It was not until 1982 that the Agency openly admitted that reporters on the CIA payroll have acted as case officers to agents in the field,” writes Alex Constantine in The Depraved Spies and Moguls of the CIA’s Operation MOCKINGBIRD. “Most consumers of the corporate media were — and are — unaware of the effect that the salting of public opinion has on their own beliefs... In the 1950s, outlays for global propaganda climbed to a full third of the CIA’s covert operations budget. Some 3, 000 salaried and contract CIA employees were eventually engaged in propaganda efforts. The cost of disinforming the world cost American taxpayers an estimated $265 million a year by 1978, a budget larger than the combined expenditures of Reuters, UPI and the AP news syndicates.”

Cronkite was a trusted and valued part of that huge mass propaganda effort.

war criminal & vietnam architect, robert mcnamara, dead at 93

"i have never killed a man, but i have read many obituaries with great pleasure." — clarence darrow (1857–1938)

war criminal & vietnam architect, robert mcnamara, dead at 93from dpa: Robert McNamara, the former US defence secretary and architect of the Vietnam War, has died at the age of 93, the Washington Post reported Monday, citing members of his family.

McNamara was a key planner of the Vietnam War, leading the Pentagon from 1961 to 1968 under presidents John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. He went on to serve as head of the World Bank.

McNamara orchestrated the escalation of the war in Southeast Asia and soon became the focal point for anti-war protests in the United States. The Vietnam War quickly became known as 'McNamara's War.'

But McNamara later in life admitted he developed deep regrets and doubts towards the end of his controversial tenure. As fissures began to develop with Johnson, he was appointed to serve as head of the World Bank in 1968. The war continued seven more years after his departure.

McNamara worked to reduce poverty and spur development at the World Bank until 1981, but will forever be associated chiefly with leading the push into Vietnam.

In a 1995 memoir, In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam, McNamara expressed misgivings that prompted a renewed debate over the war, which killed nearly 60,000 US troops and millions of Vietnamese.

McNamara was a businessman, not a defence specialist, before being appointed the country's eighth defence secretary by Kennedy. He had been the first non-family member to head the Ford Motor Company.

McNamara, who was born in San Francisco, died at his home in Washington, the Post reported. He leaves behind a wife, Diana. His first wife, Margaret, died of cancer in 1981. They had three children.

june 8, 1967: uss liberty attacked by israel in intl waters

june 8, 1967: uss liberty attacked by israel in intl watersfrom press tv: A deadly Israeli attack on a US ship - an incident largely kept in the dark by Washington - receives new attention with survivors reliving the painful memory. USS Liberty survivors gathered in Washington on Monday to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the incident and expound on how they were sprayed with bullets by America's "closest ally and beneficiary". On June 8, 1967, the unarmed spy ship USS Liberty was on duty in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula when it was bombarded by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats. The two-hour-long attacks killed at least 34 sailors, wounded 173 others and nearly sunk the ship. The attack on the Liberty came at a time when Israel had engaged in a brief but intense war with Egypt and its Arab allies, which coincided with the US war on Vietnam. Although the ship was clearly marked as an American vessel, Israelis declared the attack on Liberty as a simple case of "friendly fire" and "mistaken identity". Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, former US president Lyndon Johnson accepted the Israeli claim and cancelled all investigations into the incident. "It was a case of mistaken identity …I do not care if every man drowned and the ship sank, we will not embarrass an ally," Johnson had told his opponents who demanded an open congressional hearing to address the Israeli claim. USS Liberty survivor Rick Almett, however, begged to differ. "There was a conspiracy between our government and Israel. So that's the reason why they didn't pursue it and why the investigations were covered up because of the alliance of Israel and the United States," Almetti told Press TV.

new year's clearinghouse

end of the year or end of the world (as we know it)?
from global research: [A]n end-of-year essay of sorts is in order, especially so given the bumpy ride capitalism has bestowed on us this past twelve months. And the portents for 2009 look to be even worse as capitalism, desperate to shed over-valued assets, descends into the abyss. Look at it this way: after the Crash of ‘29 and the launch of the New Deal, it took some six years to engineer the outbreak of WWII, the surefire way of literally burning up surplus capital in awesome quantities. And if history has any lessons for us, some equivalent global conflagration is now in order. However, is this possible under these new circumstances and over what timescale can such a capitalist catastrophe be engineered?

new jfk tapes: ‘the rewards of politics are infinite'

new jfk tapes: ‘the rewards of politics are infinite'from whdh: Newly discovered audio tapes provide a look inside the life of John F. Kennedy just as he was getting his 1960 presidential campaign started. The audio was recorded at a dinner party at the Kennedy home in Georgetown. Two journalists asked the young senator about life, health, and politics. The tapes were recorded just over three months before Kennedy's assassination in 1963.

jfk’s other world
jfk’s other worldfrom filmstew: Perhaps the strangest thing about the new documentary At the Center of the World: Hyannis Port and the Presidency of John F. Kennedy, which premiered to a standing ovation last Friday in Cape Cod, involves the credentials of its director Andrew Fone. Because the man responsible for this celebration of how important JFK’s “summer White House” was to his brief Presidential reign is a producer with Fox News in Boston. Talk about moonlighting for the other team. Senator Edward Kennedy was originally scheduled to attend the October 3rd premiere at the Hyannis Port Club, which benefited the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum Foundation. But due to his recent battles with brain cancer, he was present on screen only in the form of many warm-hearted recollections about his older brother... As an indication of just how much things have changed, Kennedy aide David Crawford - per a report in the Cape Cod Times - recalls for example in the film how JFK , while awaiting the final results of the 1960 Presidential election, relaxed by passing around a football with staff and Secret Service men. And sure enough, Kennedy spent many a weekend morning or afternoon sailing his own Wianno Senior named the Victura. Fone’s feature-length doc also touches on the ease with which JFK befriended children, giving them rides in his golf cart, buying them penny candy at the village's News Shop or skipping stones and having floating sea shell contests with them.

man grazed by jfk bullet spreading gospel of cover-up
man grazed by jfk bullet spreading gospel of cover-upfrom longview news-journal: In the hours after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, James T. Tague went down to the Dallas police station to give a statement of what he had seen. Speaking Tuesday night to a group of about 20 people at the Longview Public Library, Tague once again recounted the afternoon: Late for a date, he had gotten out of his car to find out why traffic had stopped. He soon realized it was because of the president's motorcade. As Tague watched the procession make its way down the street, he heard what sounded like a firecracker go off, followed by rifle shots. The next thing he knew, a man standing on the grassy knoll nearby yelled out, "His head exploded! His head exploded!" Kennedy had been shot. Caught up in the commotion, it took Tague a moment to realize that his face had been grazed by shrapnel after a bullet struck the curb near where he was standing. Like many other witnesses, Tague was drawn into the initial investigation, asked by officials to recount what he had seen. Nearly 45 years later, Tague continues to tell audiences of his observations and about the cover-up he believes the government was in on. "Kennedy was murdered by our own government," Tague said. "They wanted (Lyndon) Johnson in the White House. Everyone around Johnson wanted him" to be president. Tague's interest in the 1963 shooting led him to evidence that he says points to the government's involvement in the assassination. After years of digging, he has completed his book, "Truth Withheld." "The story needs to be told," Tague said... Tague admits that nobody will ever know the exact truth about what happened. There are a number of details that he said he isn't sure about — how many shooters there were, for instance. But he is positive of at least one thing: "This is a complete cover-up of a coup d'etat."

ready for another jfk conspiracy movie? here comes ‘dorothy kilgallen’
from moviesblog: Mulder and Scully may be in semi-retirement these days, but that doesn’t mean conspiracy theories are dead. Producer John Davis has optioned Paul Alexander’s soon-to-be-published book “Good Night, Dorothy Kilgallen,” an expose tying the death of journalist Kilgallen to her investigation of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Kilgallen considered Kennedy a friend, and was obsessed with investigating the circumstances of his death. She became convinced his assassination was part of a conspiracy, and was determined to prove it. She managed to obtain enough evidence and interviews (including the only one with Jack Ruby, the man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald) that the FBI kept her under close surveillance.

Alexander’s book alleges that Kilgallen was murdered after finishing her book, “Murder One,” and that all its chapters about JFK disappeared. Her death was certainly under mysterious circumstances, and many have argued that she simply knew too much. She was certainly a female Fox Mulder — in addition to investigating Kennedy’s death, she also alleged that the government had covered up the existence of UFO’s.

Davis is bringing the project to Fox (home of “The X-Files,” how appropriate!) and has set screenwriter Shane Salerno to pen the script. The movie will be a fictionalized conspiracy story, but this is definitely a story where the truth is stranger than fiction, don’t you think?

3-day forum explores kennedy & king slayings
from pittsburgh tribune-review: Four decades later, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. will be dissected this weekend at Duquesne University.

"Making Sense of the Sixties," a three-day symposium starting Friday and hosted by the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law, will examine theories of cover-ups and conspiracies surrounding the slayings as well as ripple effects still felt today.

"It's a pretty weighty thing for people to confront," said Isaac Farris Jr., King's nephew and CEO of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta. "Who knows how their deaths impacted our trajectory? Who knows where our nation might have been? My God, we wiped out three of the greatest leaders of a generation."

selection '08: mccain's evacuation, nader says hillary will be obama's vp & states abandoning touch screen voting

mccain offices evacuated over suspicious letters

mccain offices evacuated over suspicious lettersfrom washington times: Two of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign offices were evacuated Thursday after receiving suspicious letters, one of which contained an unidentified white powder. A government official said a letter sent to the office of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee near Denver contained powder, but was being treated as a hoax and was thought to have been sent by an inmate at a nearby jail in Arapahoe County. A letter sent to the office in New Hampshire did not contain powder, but aroused suspicions of staffers who were jittery after the Denver-area office received its letter. Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said the two letters are unrelated. Despite the likelihood of a hoax, staffers at all the Arizona Republican's campaign offices nationwide were told not to open letters. "Let's be cautious and not open mail tomorrow unless we clearly know the source," according to a campaign e-mail that was sent to staff members and obtained by The Washington Times. "Let's see what comes of this."

nader says obama will pick hillary
nader says obama will pick hillaryfrom conservative pulse: According to the Politico, Ralph Nader is telling people that he fully expects that Barack Obama will name Hillary Clinton as his running-mate in the next few days. Nader suggests that Obama can’t really pick anyone else, as all other available choices are uninspiring empty suits. “I don’t think he’s that dumb,” said Nader, commenting on widespread speculation that Obama’s choices are down to Sens. Joe Biden, Evan Bayh, or Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. The smart pick, according to Nader, is Hillary Rodham Clinton. Nader phoned into Politico Tuesday afternoon to offer his prediction that a surprise nod to Clinton is actually what Obama has in store—never mind the talk of mistrust between the Clintons and Obama. “He just has to swallow hard and do what JFK did” in picking rival Lyndon Johnson in 1960, said the liberal activist and maverick presidential candidate.

former first lady lady bird johnson dies at 94

former first lady lady bird johnson dies at 94from houston chronicle: Lady Bird Johnson, a former first lady, a Texas legend, a woman who used the humble wildflower to teach an entire nation to treasure and preserve the environment, died Wednesday. She was 94.

In recent years, the widow of Lyndon Baines Johnson was virtually silenced by a stroke. She was nearly blinded by macular degeneration. Still, she lived her life with enthusiasm, dividing her time between the family ranch in Stonewall and an Austin home near the presidential library dedicated to her husband. She thrived on visits with friends and family and inhaled mystery books on tape.

Family spokesman Neal Spelce said Johnson's final days were good ones, surrounded by loved ones who had been holding a vigil for the past few days.

Johnson's daughters, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Johnson Robb, were by her side when she died, as they had been almost continually during her final months.

The official cause of death was respiratory failure, Spelce said, adding, "Actually, natural causes, when you get right down to it. ... She was simply 94 years old."

Many thanks for your email

We appreciate your support in our decision to show Loose Change 2 on our flights.

We have since made the decision not to screen the documentary. Virgin Atlantic is known for showing the latest movies and media trends, without censorship, as we believe that travellers have the right to choose from as wide a programme as possible. However as there was a danger with this movie, that viewers may be offended, although they have the choice not to view it, we have decided to remove it from the in flight Entertainment menu.

We appreciate you taking the time to get in touch with us and we thank you again for your support.

According to the New York Post's gossip column, Page Six, "E. Howard Hunt – the shadowy former CIA man who organized the Watergate break-in and was once eyed in the assassination of President Kennedy – bizarrely says that Lyndon Johnson could be seen as a prime suspect in the rubout."

"Only the most far-out conspiracy theorists believe in scenarios like Hunt's," the column continues. "But in a new memoir, American Spy: My Secret History in the CIA, Watergate & Beyond, due out in April, Hunt, 88, writes: 'Having Kennedy liquidated, thus elevating himself to the presidency without having to work for it himself, could have been a very tempting and logical move on Johnson's part.'"

In 2004, the History Channel aired a program called The Guilty Men, which was partially based on a book by Barr McClellan, who alleged that "the law firm he quit a quarter-century ago was involved in convoluted plots that link Johnson to at least 11 deaths, including President Kennedy's." After much criticism, the cable channel apologized to its viewers, then aired a follow-up special which included a panel of three historians who "debunked" the claim.

"We have a great responsibility and this time we did not live up to it," History Channel executive vice president Dan Davids said. "We hold ourselves accountable. As we have said before, nothing is more important to us than the accuracy of our programming and the integrity of our network."

"LBJ had the money and the connections to manipulate the scenario in Dallas and is on record as having convinced JFK to make the appearance in the first place," Hunt writes, according to the tabloid. "He further tried unsuccessfully to engineer the passengers of each vehicle, trying to get his good buddy, Gov. [John] Connolly, to ride with him instead of in JFK's car – where...he would have been out of danger."

A blurb from Hunt's publisher states that in American Spy, "a legendary CIA operative and central figure in the Watergate scandal at last tells his story."

"Now in his late eighties, Hunt looks back over his storied career, revealing what really happened and debunking the many rumors that have swirled around him," the blurb continues. "Writing with his characteristic salty wit, he brings to life his exploits in the CIA, offering surprising revelations about the agency’s Latin American operations–and its masterly manipulation of politics and the media in the U.S."

Adding, "He details the 'black bag jobs' of the White House plumbers, explains why he agreed to participate in the Watergate burglary–even though he thought it was a bad idea–and sheds new light on the aftermath of the break-in. He sets the record straight on rumors about his first wife’s death and accusations that have linked him to the JFK assassination and the George Wallace shooting. And finally, he offers an insider’s advice on how the CIA must now reshape itself to regain its edge and help win the war on terrorism."
