jfk assassination: 48th anniversary of an american coup
'lost' jfk assassination tapes on sale
from ap: A long-lost version of the Air Force One recordings made in the immediate aftermath of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, with more than 30 minutes of additional material not in the official version in the government's archives, has been found and is for sale.
new book indicts cia in kennedy assassination
from cisionwire: New York Times number one bestselling author and JFK historian Mark Lane tried the only U.S. court case in which jurors concluded that the CIA plotted the murder of President Kennedy, but there were always missing pieces: How did the CIA control Dallas police and Secret Service agents on the ground in Dealey Plaza? How did federal authorities prevent the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee on Assassinations from discovering the truth about the complicity of the CIA? Now, Lane tells all in his explosive new book – Last Word: My Indictment of the CIA in the Murder of JFK – with exclusive new interviews, sworn statements and meticulous new research (including interviews with Oliver Stone, Dallas Police deputy sheriffs, Robert K. Tanenbaum, and Secret Service agent Abraham Bolden) Lane finds out first hand exactly what went on the day JFK was assassinated.
'the umbrella man'
from errol morris: For years, I’ve wanted to make a movie about the John F. Kennedy assassination. Not because I thought I could prove that it was a conspiracy, or that I could prove it was a lone gunman, but because I believe that by looking at the assassination, we can learn a lot about the nature of investigation and evidence. Why, after 48 years, are people still quarreling and quibbling about this case? What is it about this case that has led not to a solution, but to the endless proliferation of possible solutions? Years ago, Josiah Thompson, known as Tink, a young, Yale-educated Kierkegaard scholar, quit his day job as a professor of philosophy at Haverford College to write the definitive book on the Zapruder film — “Six Seconds in Dallas.” Tink became a private detective, and came to work with many of the same private investigators I had also worked with in the 1980s. We had so much in common — philosophy, P.I. work and an obsessive interest in the complexities of reality. But we had never met. Last year, I finally got to meet and interview Tink Thompson. I hope his interview can become the first part of an extended series on the Kennedy assassination. This film is but a small segment of my six-hour interview with Tink.

white house & congress critters close in on debt ceiling deal
meanwhile, apple inc. has more cash on hand than the govt...
from afp: With barely two days to act, US President Barack Obama and top lawmakers closed in on Sunday in on an ambitious deal to avert a disastrous debt default sure to sow chaos in the fragile world economy.
"We are very close," Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN amid frantic beat-the-clock talks among the White House, its Democratic allies, and its Republican foes.
Senior Obama adviser David Plouffe indicated on NBC television there was an emerging consensus but no solid agreement yet to raise the $14.3 trillion US debt ceiling ahead of a midnight Tuesday (0400 GMT Wednesday) deadline.
"We don't have a deal. The hours are ticking," Plouffe said on NBC, stressing: "We have to get this solved. Today is obviously a critical day."
The US economy hit its debt limit on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally - but can only do so through midnight Tuesday.
Business and finance leaders have warned default would send crippling aftershocks through the fragile US economy, still wrestling with stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 percent in the wake of the 2008 global meltdown.
Without a deal, the US government would have to cut an estimated 40 cents out of every dollar it spends, forcing grim choices between defaulting or cutting back programmes like those that help the poor, disabled and elderly.
Any compromise would still need to clear the divided Democratic-led Senate and Republican-held House of Representatives, where conservatives close to the "Tea Party" movement have called for draconian belt-tightening.

jfk assassination: 47th anniversary of an american coup
national security state & the assassination of jfk
from ap: Just as people of this generation will always remember where they were on 9/11, those who were alive on November 22, 1963 will always remember their whereabouts on the day President John F. Kennedy was killed. Kennedy was shot and killed as his convertible made its way through the streets of Dallas, not long after he had arrived in the city. First word of shooting took even the most seasoned journalists to the breaking point. CBS News TV Anchor Walter Cronkite brought first word of the shooting by interrupting with a bulletin during a soap opera. Minutes later, NBC Radio News Anchor Edwin Newman quoted from what he called a "flash from Dallas" that two priests attending the president had said he was dead. Lee Harvey Oswald was taken into custody a short time after the assassination, but Oswald was shot dead a day later by Jack Ruby. Although many believe there were other shooters involved, the official government line is that Oswald acted alone. Oswald professed his innocence.

wooden ship from 1700s found at wtc ground zero

The remains of the 30ft length of a wood-hulled vessel were found when workers excavating the site, where a new World Trade Centre is being built, hit a row of wood timbers, The New York Times reported.
"They were so perfectly contoured that they were clearly part of a ship," said archaeologist A. Michael Pappalardo. The archaeologists have been working on the site - scene of the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 - to document historical material uncovered during construction. They estimated that the vessel could date from the mid to late 1700s.

from kfoxtv: On Tuesday, the El Paso Police Department got approval to buy 1,145 M4s, otherwise known as an AR 15 semi-automatic rifle. "It's going to be used in rare instances, hopefully we won't have to use them at all in El Paso," said Chief Greg Allen. Allen said El Paso is behind places like Austin, Albuquerque and Dallas, where officers there already have the rifles. But El Paso is not like those cities. As KFOX has reported, El Paso is the second safest city in the country...

from the register: Since the police beating of motorist Rodney King in 1991, men in blue have looked warily at the civilian videotaping of arrests and other police activities. Some cops are so opposed to the practice, they've begun arresting the amateur videographers and charging them criminally. According to this article published by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, police in Boston and Pennsylvania have regularly arrested otherwise law-abiding citizens who videotape cops as they go about performing arrests on public streets. The charge: illegal electronic surveillance. "The police apparently do not want witnesses to what they do in public," Sarah Wunsch, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, was quoted as saying.

ahead of g20, council told to switch off illegal £15m cctv
from guardian: The security operation at this week's G20 summit was thrown into chaos last night when it emerged that the entire network of central London's wireless CCTV cameras will have to be turned off because of a legal ruling. The Department for Transport (DfT) has ruled that Westminster council's mobile road cameras - a third of the authority's CCTV network - "do not fully meet the resolution standards required" and must be switched off by midnight tomorrow. The blackout begins on the eve of the summit, when world leaders arrive in the capital and protesters take to the streets.

And US President Barack Obama has arrived in London for the G20 summit with a large contingent of the White House staff with him. Hundreds of security guards, doctors, chefs and others are accompanying President Obama on his visit, and the entourage includes a number of presidential vehicles - including his new armour-plated limousine, The Beast, and aeroplane, Air Force One. The 4,000 sq ft Boeing 747 is fully equipped for the president to work while he is in the air. The exercise-loving president will even be able to use the onboard gym to keep fit inflight. The plane is fitted with some robust security equipment including shields to protect its instruments from an electromagnetic pulse. The communications equipment is even capable of withstanding radiation from a nuclear attack.

from csmonitor: Well, it’s better than giving her a bunch of DVDs that don’t work. President Obama went to the Buckingham Palace today in London where he and first lady Michelle had a lovely tea with the Queen of England. The press corps from both sides of the Pond was paying close attention to this meeting. After all, it was another gift exchange. Something the president didn’t do too well the last time out. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave Obama an ornamental pen holder carved from the timbers of the HMS Gannet — an anti-slave ship from the 1800s. President Obama, on the other hand, treated the gift exchange like a Secret Santa party forking over a bunch of American movies on DVDs. If that wasn’t bad enough, it turns out they didn’t work. They weren’t compatible with British DVD players. Read all about this here.

the 45th anniversary of the assassination of jfk
thus was all hope lost, 45yrs ago today
from winter patriot: Forty-five years ago today, the world was changed by an audacious act of terrorism. Ensuing events have confirmed the suspicions that arose at the time: the changes that came in the wake of the terror have been forever, and not for better. Humanity's last reasonable hope for peace and prosperity was dashed. The last real President of the United States was dead. And all the rest has been decline and fall. John F. Kennedy wasn't perfect - not by any means. But he was brilliant, compassionate, hopeful of a brighter future for humanity, and willing to fight for that future. Alone he stood between the American warmongers and their goal of establishing an endless quagmire in Vietnam. He chided the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in private; in public he did the same thing, but more subtly. All the world wept at the news of his death - all except for the most vicious and ignorant parts of it, which lie deep in the heart of the Confederacy. In retrospect, there can be no doubt that the assassination of John F. Kennedy was an inside job, a military coup d'etat, the beginning of the end of America as it once could have been.
jfk anniversary marked at dallas shooting site
from ap: About 500 people crowded Saturday into the plaza where John F. Kennedy was shot 45 years ago, all agreeing it was right to remember a pivotal moment in American history, even if they didn't all believe the official line. People stood shoulder to shoulder and bowed their heads during a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. Some hawked JFK memorabilia or pitched conspiracy theories to visitors. Others offered firsthand accounts of their memories of the killing.

from dallas morning news: It was 21-year-old Ben Lawrence's first time to visit on Nov. 22. Mr. Lawrence, who wore a blue T-shirt with the words "Tyranny Response Team," said he believes federal agencies were responsible for the assassination of JFK. "There was a conspiracy, for sure," the Mesquite resident said. "There's no way Oswald could have squeezed off three shots in six seconds at a target that was down and away."
45 years on, jfk killing haunts secret service protecting obama
from afp: Americans reflected Saturday on the presidency of John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated 45 years ago, as once again a young, inspiring president is headed to the White House. President-elect Barack Obama has often been compared for his lofty ideals and charisma to the late JFK, who was shot dead in Dallas, Texas in 1963. Obama's cool speech delivery, his intellectual prowess, relative youth and inexperience - the 47-year-old was an Illinois state senator little over four years ago - have been seen by many as direct reflections of JFK. Even the charming families, along with an apparent command of admiration around the world, are touchstones of both Obama and JFK's broad appeal. But Obama's character and historic election as the first African-American US president have many people worried about potential threats to his life.

from vv daily press: Forty-five years ago Saturday, then-President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, yet the tragedy remains one of the most controversial events in history and has spawned countless conspiracy theories... A Daily Press online poll this week with more than 160 respondents showed that 73 percent believe there was a conspiracy behind the JFK assassination.

from techradar: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was most likely shot from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository – not the grassy knoll, as widely believed. That's the claim yesterday from a group of scientists who recreated the assassination using modern blood splatter analysis, new human body surrogates and 3D computer simulations. Advances in blood splatter analysis aided the experts in their research. But it wasn't just innovations here that helped; the team also used some of the "most advanced artificial human heads in the world" for the ballistic tests, MSNBC reports.

from ascribe: Historians should use the 45th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination as a time to focus on the historical event, while debunking still popular conspiracy theories, says a Purdue University historian. "Historians have pretty much ignored the assassination as a historical event, and they need to weigh in against the excesses of conspiracy theory as false history," says Michael G. Smith, an associate professor of history who will teach a spring semester course on the Kennedy assassination. "We need to begin to respect the dead rather than distort their memory... It might take a new generation of scholars, those born after the 'Baby Boom,' who did not live through the event and who do not have a personal or political stake in President Kennedy's loss, to come to grips with his assassination. We need to mark it as a simple crime, a murder solved and closed, as well as understand it as a complex event that has been manipulated and misread."

the big apple's eyeing you
from nypost: They're watching you. The NYPD's plan to have 5,000 cameras trained on every sidewalk crack south of Canal Street has begun in a space-age hub that will be operating by the end of the month. The "Ring of Steel" command center - which will keep 24-hour watch on high-profile targets like the World Trade Center site, the Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge - is on the 28th floor of a nondescript building at 55 Broadway. Modeled after a highly touted network in London, the $89 million Lower Manhattan Security Initiative will fight crime and terrorism by blanketing the 1.7 square miles with 500 cameras. The feds will pick up $70 million of the cost. Police intend to be using 2,000 cameras by 2009 and 3,000 by 2011. They also hope to tap into images from an additional 2,000 private cameras.

fbi finds most terrorism threat reports baseless
from reuters: The FBI tracked about 108,000 potential terrorism threats or suspicious incidents from mid-2004 to November 2007, but most were found groundless, a Justice Department review found on Friday. The department's office of inspector general gave the figure in an audit of the FBI's terrorism case-tracking system, called Guardian, launched in 2002 after the September 11 attacks. "The FBI determined that the overwhelming majority of the threat information documented in Guardian had no nexus to terrorism. However, as a result of information reported in Guardian the FBI initiated over 600 criminal and terrorism-related investigations from October 2006 to December 2007," the inspector general's report said. The report did not discuss the result of the investigations.

kbr to provide power during emergencies
from upi: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contracted KBR to provide power during emergency or disaster situations. U.S. company KBR was awarded a $75 million deal from the Army Corps or Engineers for disaster relief services. Under the contract, KBR will supply emergency power for the Western region of the United States in case of a natural or manmade disaster. KBR officials say during an emergency situation they will provide labor, transportation and equipment, among other services, to support power requirements for designated critical public facilities. "This award allows KBR the opportunity to expand our capabilities portfolio in the government and infrastructure business to include emergency response, an area of growth due to recent natural disasters," Bruce Stanski, KBR government and infrastructure president, said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in this new area and are committed to providing the premier services the Army Corps has come to expect of KBR."
US secret service officer arrested in hooker sting
from wikinews: A United States Secret Service officer has been arrested in Washington, D.C. after allegedly soliciting a prostitute for sex. The prostitute turned out to be an undercover D.C. police officer. The Secret Service officer was using his official Secret Service patrol car, which was marked, and was also in full uniform at the time of the arrest. The unnamed Secret Service officer, a sergeant, was arrested after allegedly agreeing to pay the undercover police officer US$20 to receive oral sex. After agreeing on a price, the undercover officer told the Secret Service officer to drive around the corner, where the sex act would take place. When he stopped his car, he was arrested by police officers.

from washington post: Former New York governor Eliot L. Spitzer will not face criminal charges for his role in a prostitution scandal that drove him from office this year, prosecutors announced yesterday. [nov6] Investigators for the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service uncovered no evidence that Spitzer had misused public or campaign money to pay women employed by the Emperors Club VIP, a high-priced New York prostitution ring.

Democrats had been hoping that Byrd would “step aside voluntarily” due concerns that he was “not up to the immense challenges he would face in that job.” Byrd will be replaced by Sen. newspapers seek gov't documents in anthrax inquiry
from ap: Two newspapers asked a federal judge Wednesday to make public several documents relating to a former Army scientist who was named as a person of interest in the 2001 anthrax attacks and later exonerated. The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times want the government's search warrants and supporting documents involving Stephen Hatfill, who was eventually cleared in the anthrax attacks and was awarded $5.8 million in a lawsuit accusing the Justice Department of violating his privacy. Normally, search warrants would be sealed for a person who has not been charged or indicted, lawyers said. But the public has a right to know why investigators wanted to search Hatfill's home and on what basis the courts agreed to allow those searches, the newspapers argued in U.S. District Court. "The public has a right to know why he was targeted," said Jeanette Melendez Bead, lawyer for the newspapers.

from raw story: The Bush administration has been planning since last spring to issue a final burst of federal regulations just before leaving office. It was recently announced that over 90 new regulations would be finalized before November 22 - 60 days prior to the end of Bush's term - making them difficult, though not impossible, for President Obama to reverse. Although many of the regulations have to do with energy and the environment, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow noted on Tuesday that there's also "one that'll kick opponents of the Patriot Act right in the teeth."

obama/biden '08: and the crowd goes... meh
obama selects joseph biden as his running mate
from thinkprogress: CNN’s John King is reporting that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has selected Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) as his running mate. King said the Obama campaign will officially reveal the selection in a text message to over three million people soon. Obama is scheduled to appear with Biden at a rally this afternoon in Springfield, IL.
Biden, who ran as a presidential candidate in 1987 and 2007, has served in the Senate since 1972 and is currently the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Last week, New York Times conservative columnist David Brooks urged the selection of Biden, writing that he “provides what Obama needs.” Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter wrote, “The main task now for Obama is reassurance that he could handle the job, especially commander in chief. Biden provides it.”
Taking aim at McCain’s foreign policy approach earlier this year, Biden said:
"John McCain remains wedded to the Bush Administration’s myopic view of a world defined by terrorism… He would continue to allow a tiny minority to set the agenda for the overwhelming majority. It is time for a total change in Washington’s world view."
obama announces biden as running mate via text message
from wikinews: Senator Barack Obama from Illinois, the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, announced his choice for Vice President as Joe Biden. The announcement came via text message early Saturday morning, to people who had signed up to receive the announcement on the official Barack Obama campaign website. Friday afternoon, several campaign officials had informed the media that the text message announcement would be distributed Saturday morning. Reportedly, the announcement would come a few hours ahead of a scheduled rally at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, where Obama and and whoever the VP candidate would be would appear together for the first time as the Democratic ticket. On August 19th, Biden while leaving his house reportedly said to some reporters, "hey guys, I'm not the guy."
obama leaves texters at altar, runs off w/ dinosaur press
from threat level: The best line in the coverage of Barack Obama's choice of Sen. Joe Biden as running mate is this nugget from the AP story.
"The official who spoke did so on condition of anonymity, preferring not to pre-empt a text-message announcement the Obama campaign promised for Saturday morning," the AP wrote.
If the official didn't want to pre-empt the much-anticipated text message announcement, shouldn't it have been Biden's name that was kept secret?
At the DailyKos, Marcos Moulitsas was fairly gloating Friday night - before the Biden story broke - that the planned direct-to-supporters announcement was proof "that old media is getting left out in the cold." And Twitter was buzzing with anticipation - Obama fans described their hearts jumping into their throats every time their phones buzzed, thinking it might be the Text Message From On High. Now you have to feel sorry for them. They're still waiting, while the old-timers watching the boob-tube have the scoop.
After all the talk about how the Obama campaign was blazing a bold new trail in filterless netroots communication, in the end, it behaved just like any other political campaign and went to CNN, AP, Fox News, ABC, NBC and CBS with its news. It turns out the revolution will be televised, it just won't be a revolution.
secret service on their way to biden's house
from abcnews: The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.
obama's & mccain's vp picks won't matter in november
from usnews: While vice-presidential mania hits its peak, can we take a deep breath and remember something: In November, it won't matter whom Barack Obama and John McCain select. Remember two names: Lyndon B. Johnson and J. Danforth Quayle.
obama selects biden to reassure the US ruling elite
from global research: The selection of Senator Joseph Biden as the vice-presidential candidate of the Democratic Party underscores the fraudulent character of the Democratic primary campaign and the undemocratic character of the entire two-party electoral system. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the supposed protagonist of “change,” has picked as his running-mate a fixture of the Washington establishment, a six-term US senator who is a proven defender of American imperialism and the interests of big business. The rollout of the Biden selection over three days of escalating media attention, culminating in the text-message announcement early Saturday and a kickoff rally in Springfield, Illinois, is a metaphor for the entire Obama campaign. His presidential candidacy represents not an insurgency from below, but an effort to manipulate mass sentiments, using Internet technology and slick marketing techniques, aided by a compliant media, to produce a political result that is utterly conventional and in keeping with the requirements of the US ruling elite.
1992 biden speech: “on the threshold of the new world order: a rebirth for the united nations”
from cryptogon/university of delaware: In his speech in Clayton Hall, “On the Threshold of the New World Order: A Rebirth for the United Nations,” Biden said the world’s leaders must adopt a new understanding of security. “Collective security today must encompass not only the security of nations,” he said, “but also mankind’s security in a global environment that has proven vulnerable to debilitating changes wrought by man’s own endeavors. Thus, in setting an American agenda for a new world order, we must begin with a profound alteration in traditional thought,” he said.
a few questions for joe biden that should be answered, preferably under oath
from 9/11 blogger: The following question was submitted to the 9/11 Commission by the 9/11 Family Steering Committee.
Why did Mahmood Ahmed, Director of Pakistan's secret service, the (ISI) order Saeed Sheikh to wire $100,000 to hijacker Mohamed Atta?
What was Mahmood Ahmed's relationship with Al Qaeda?
Where did the money come from?
Did officials in Pakistan know in advance about the terrorist attack?
On September 11 th , Mahmood Ahmed had a breakfast meeting in Washington, D.C., with House and Senate Intelligence Committee chairmen, Rep. Porter Goss and Senator Bob Graham. What were they discussing?
The 9/11 Commission also presumably heard about Lt. Gen. Ahmed from FBI Whistle-blower Sibel Edmonds during her 3 1/2 hours of testimony. At the insistence of the families. They may have also heard of Lt. Gen. Ahmed during a meeting with the Pakistani ISI. The 9/11 Commission did not answer the families' question, and did not mention Lt. General Mahmood Ahmed in their report even though they were mandated to give a "full and complete accounting" of the 9/11 attacks.
Why did you meet with an alleged paymaster of 9/11, and alleged participant in the nuclear black market after the 9/11 attacks?
Were you aware of his alleged activities? If you weren't aware of these activities at the time of your meeting, did you hear of them afterwards? Did you make any effort to expose them? If so, who did you inform of your intention to expose these activities?
biden on 9/10: the ‘real threat’ may come in ‘the belly of a plane’
from thinkprogress: Before 9/11, the Bush administration’s national security focus was on missile defense, not terrorism. In fact, on 9/11, then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was set to deliver a speech that focused “largely on missile defense.” Writing at the Huffington Post, Joe Cirincione — president of the Ploughshares Fund — recalls this quote from Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) on Sept. 10, 2001, warning against the Bush administration’s approach:

We might have prevented 9/11.”
