RNC 2012 Coverage Threatened By Isaac, Media Covers Storm
from huffingtonpost.com: Republicans gathering to formally nominate Mitt Romney in Tampa are having to grapple with a media that has one eye trained firmly on Tropical Storm Isaac — and is sending many of its biggest stars to cover the extreme weather.
15,000 journalists have traveled down to Florida to cover the Republican convention -- large parcels of media stars on the same plane was not an uncommon sight -- but, as of Monday, they don't have much to do. The storm has already forced the GOP to cancel the first night of its convention, and has the party worrying about how to get their message out if things get worse. As Reuters noted, "Romney could be robbed of some media attention - or worse, have images of convention festivities juxtaposed with searing split-screen television images of the storm's onslaught if Isaac dominates the news this week."
On Monday, at least, Isaac appeared to be winning. The morning's Washington Post was dominated by a huge picture of ominous waves. "Republicans gather, and so does the storm," a headline read. "All eyes on Isaac," an Associated Press article blared.
The network morning shows reflected the preeminence the storm has taken, leading their programs off with multiple packages of coverage. The choice between a potential hurricane passing through the Gulf Coast and a drama-free, stage-managed convention was a seemingly easy one.
"Isaac is the story of the morning," Robin Roberts observed on "Good Morning America." On "Today," Matt Lauer, who had been sent to Tampa for the Republican gathering, was taping outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, outfitted in a classic storm-covering windbreaker.
On "GMA" and "CBS This Morning," Diane Sawyer and Charlie Rose reported from an empty convention center. Anchors openly speculated about the potential media schizophrenia.
"They're going to be sharing the screen all week with the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina," Stephanopoulos said to Sawyer, who had just shown footage of herself trapped in a howling gust of wind earlier in the day.
On "Today," Lauer asked RNC chair Reince Priebus if he was worried about Isaac competing for headlines with the convention.
"It is what it is," Priebus said. "Our message is still going to be the same ... you have to report on this storm."
There was another more ominous sign for Republicans that Isaac was going to take precedence as the week drew on when CNN announced that two of its biggest names, Anderson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien, were headed to New Orleans to cover the storm's potential effect on the city. Both gained new prominence in 2005 when they reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Sam Feist, CNN's Washington bureau chief, was very direct in a tweet:

presidential selection updates: selling access, staying the same
in third white house bid, paul's message the same
from ap: Long before he discovered Friedrich Hayek and other free-market economists, Ron Paul got a lesson in sound money from his oldest brother, Bill. It was the height of World War II, and the Paul boys were laying aside quarters from their Pittsburgh Press routes and pooling pennies earned from pulling dirty milk bottles off the line at the family dairy to buy war bonds. One day, Ronnie suggested what was, in retrospect, a rather Keynesian solution: "Why doesn't the government just PRINT this money?"
"Well," Bill responded, "then the money wouldn't have any value." Bill was 10. Ron was about 7.
Washington bureaucrats, Paul says now, "would like it to be complicated, and that we have to accept this complex monetary system of the Federal Reserve. But it's no more complicated than two little kids talking ..."
It's not complicated, he insists. These are the themes he has been addressing, consistently, since he entered politics in 1974, over the course of 12 terms in Congress, through his third bid for the White House: Free markets are good. The Federal Reserve is evil. The gold standard should be restored. Government is the cause, not the cure, of the nation's troubles.

from forbes: In a statement released after the bell, the so-called budget deficit Supercommittee officially announced it failed to produce $1.2 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. Their failure, anticipated by many, led to a substantial market plunge on Monday and will supposedly trigger the automatic sequester proposition, which is designed to enact $1.2 trillion in cuts, evenly split between defense and domestic spending.
destined to fail super committee completely fails
from washington times: For the uninitiated, America is drowning in debt. Barack Obama is piling on debt at an exponential rate while blaming everybody else for refusing to balance the books while he spends America into bankruptcy.
debt committee calls it quits without a deal
from cnn: Well, it's official. The congressional debt committee is so over. To no one's surprise, the bipartisan panel called it quits on Monday without reaching any agreement on debt reduction, let alone the $4 trillion "grand bargain" that budget experts say is needed at a minimum to get a handle on the country's long-term fiscal problems... The hope, of course, was that the super committee -- given extraordinary and unprecedented powers -- would tackle the tough problems facing the country's budget, such as rising health costs and an unwieldy tax code no one likes.

obama accused of waging 'class warfare' with millionaire tax plan
from foxnews: A top House Republican accused President Obama of appealing to Americans' "fear, envy and anxiety" by pushing a new tax rate on people making more than $1 million annually, saying the "class warfare path" will only hurt the economy. "Class warfare ... may make for really good politics, but it makes for rotten economics," Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., chairman of the House Budget Committee, told "Fox News Sunday."related econocrash updates:

united states loses aaa credit rating from s&p, markets go wild
debt crisis q&a: what you need to know about s&p cut*
from reuters: The United States lost its top-notch AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor's on Friday in an unprecedented reversal of fortune for the world's largest economy. S&P cut the long-term U.S. credit rating by one notch to AA-plus on concerns about the government's budget deficits and rising debt burden. The move is likely to raise borrowing costs eventually for the American government, companies and consumers. "The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government's medium-term debt dynamics," S&P said in a statement. The decision follows a fierce political battle in Congress over cutting spending and raising taxes to reduce the government's debt burden and allow its statutory borrowing limit to be raised... The S&P 500 stock index fell 10.8 percent in the past 10 trading days on concerns that the U.S. economy may head into another recession and because the European debt crisis has been growing worse as it spreads to Italy.

obamessiah signs debt limit bill after 'nasty' fight
including the disturbing new #supercongress...
from cbsnews: President Obama signed a hard-fought, last-minute compromise bill to avert economic catastrophe Tuesday, saying the deal to cut spending and increase the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit marked an "important first step to ensuring that as a nation we live within our means." The bill, he said, was the outcome of a "long and contentious debate" to avoid a man-made economic disaster that he described as creating "unsettling" economic uncertainty. He said that while voters chose divided government, "they sure didn't vote for dysfunctional government."

white house & congress critters close in on debt ceiling deal
meanwhile, apple inc. has more cash on hand than the govt...
from afp: With barely two days to act, US President Barack Obama and top lawmakers closed in on Sunday in on an ambitious deal to avert a disastrous debt default sure to sow chaos in the fragile world economy.
"We are very close," Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN amid frantic beat-the-clock talks among the White House, its Democratic allies, and its Republican foes.
Senior Obama adviser David Plouffe indicated on NBC television there was an emerging consensus but no solid agreement yet to raise the $14.3 trillion US debt ceiling ahead of a midnight Tuesday (0400 GMT Wednesday) deadline.
"We don't have a deal. The hours are ticking," Plouffe said on NBC, stressing: "We have to get this solved. Today is obviously a critical day."
The US economy hit its debt limit on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally - but can only do so through midnight Tuesday.
Business and finance leaders have warned default would send crippling aftershocks through the fragile US economy, still wrestling with stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 percent in the wake of the 2008 global meltdown.
Without a deal, the US government would have to cut an estimated 40 cents out of every dollar it spends, forcing grim choices between defaulting or cutting back programmes like those that help the poor, disabled and elderly.
Any compromise would still need to clear the divided Democratic-led Senate and Republican-held House of Representatives, where conservatives close to the "Tea Party" movement have called for draconian belt-tightening.

gearing up at the bohemian grove
#OperationBohemianGrove begins as elites gather in the california redwoods for the 133rd annual secret enclave
from press democrat: San Francisco Giants' boss Bill Neukom and Vaughn Walker, the retired federal judge who threw out Proposition 8, will be among the featured speakers at the Bohemian Grove encampment of rich and powerful men beginning Friday in Monte Rio.
Also scheduled to present Lakeside Talks during the 17-day Bohemian Grove retreat are Daniel Yergin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and energy expert; Willie Smits, a conservationist and defender of Borneo's orangutans; and former Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker, according to a source.
The talks, presented beside a small lake ringed by towering redwoods, are a daily highlight of the summer encampment held by the San Francisco-based Bohemian Club and dating back to 1878.
Like everything else that transpires within the Bohemians' 2,700-acre enclave along the Russian River, the talks are secret, to the chagrin of critics who contend the plutocrats and politicians are either plotting the future of the free world, engaging in nefarious ceremonies or both.
Nothing like that actually happens, according to Matt Oggero, the club's general manager. “It's a group of guys out in the woods having a good time,” he said.
Even the protesters who used to collect at the grove's gate have pretty much given up, although there have been recent Internet rumblings of such an effort, Oggero said.

obamessiah can't guarantee social security checks will go out on aug3
meanwhile, military funding will continue on schedule...
from cbsnews: President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks. "I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News. The Obama administration and many economists have warned of economic catastrophe if the United States does not raise the amount it is legally allowed to borrow by August 2. Lawmakers from both parties want to use the threat of that deadline to work out a broader package on long-term deficit reduction, with Republicans looking to cut trillions of dollars in federal spending, while Democrats are pushing for a more "balanced approach," which would include both spending cuts and increased revenue through taxes.

antiwar republican ron paul declares presidential candidacy
from dpa: Texas Congressman Ron Paul announced Friday his bid to gain the Republican Party nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in the 2012 election. Paul, 75, made the announcement on ABC Television's Good Morning America. A radical free-market libertarian, Paul was a fringe presidential candidate in 2008 whose small but loyal following raised unexpected millions of dollars for his campaign, though he fell well short of the conservative party's nomination. Opposed to nearly all foreign military deployments, Paul was one of the few members of Congress among the hawkish Republicans who voted against the 2003 Iraq invasion, and he has called for a US withdrawal from Afghanistan. Paul, a medical doctor by training, had already formed a presidential exploratory committee last month. Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, declared himself a candidate on Wednesday. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, another failed 2008 candidate, and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty have formed exploratory committees for their expected presidential runs.related updates:
