Lauryn Hill's Taxing Problem: "Manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex"

from vigilantcitizen.com: Several newspapers have reported that Lauryn Hill was in trouble with the government for not filing taxes from 2005-2007. While I do not know (nor care) about her financial status and her tax paying habits, I found Hill’s response to the charges quite compelling. In a first public statement in years, Hill describes the control, manipulation and exploitation of the music industry and her efforts to get away from it all:

"Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright. When one has a prolific creative output like I did/do, and is then forced to stop, the effects can be dangerous both emotionally and psychologically, both for the artist and those in need of that resource. It was critically important that I find a suitable pathway within which to exist, without being distorted or economically strong-armed."

As it is always the case when celebrities reject and pull away from the industry, Hill has been often portrayed as crazy and unstable in the media. However, those who know about the dark side of the industry know that Hill did the only SANE thing one can do in her situation: Get out.

s&p cuts US outlook from stable to negative

US seeks to reassure markets on debt after s&p warning
from dow jones: The Obama administration on Monday sought to reassure U.S. Treasurys investors, saying Standard & Poor's threat to downgrade America's top-notch debt rating underestimates the country's ability to face fiscal challenges.

S&P affirmed the U.S. federal government's "AAA" rating but, for the first time, changed its long-term outlook to negative from stable, signaling there's at least a 33% chance that it will downgrade the country's debt rating within two years.

The outlook revision comes as the White House and Congress are mired in a debate about how to contain the country's rapidly rising public debt. The International Monetary Fund last week pointed the finger at the world's largest economy, warning that a delay in slashing the budget deficit might cause the bond market to lose faith in the U.S.'s ability to do so, with ripple effects across the U.S. and global economy.

"We believe there is a material risk that U.S. policymakers might not reach an agreement on how to address medium- and long-term budgetary challenges by 2013," S&P said. Because of the U.S. budget process, this would mean agreeing on a broad deficit-cutting plan before the 2012 presidential elections, which many analysts view as a challenge.

S&P noted the gap between Republicans and Democrats about how to cut the deficit "remains wide." Even if an agreement is made, "there is a reasonable chance that it would still take a number of years before the government reaches a fiscal position that stabilizes its debt burden," S&P said.

from voanews: One key reason that U.S. President Barack Obama, his Democratic Party allies in the Congress and rival Republicans are squabbling over the budget is that the budget deficit is expected to hit its highest level in decades. Newly published budget documents say the deficit is forecast to hit 10.9 percent of the gross domestic product in 2011. Many economists say deficits above 3 percent are not sustainable. Mr. Obama's proposed budget is supposed to cut the deficit to a bit over 3 percent by 2015 with a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. Those proposed reductions would cut billions of dollars from 200 programs, including some that help poor people pay heating bills and others that help cities build water treatment facilities. The revenue increases would come from ending some tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and oil companies.

geithner says US insolvent

from lew rockwell: The U.S. government is insolvent. Who says so? Timothy F. Geithner, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Geithner sent a letter to Congress on Jan. 6, 2011 asking for the debt limit to be raised. If it is not raised, he warned, the U.S. will default on its debt. In his words:

"Never in our history has Congress failed to increase the debt limit when necessary. Failure to raise the limit would precipitate a default by the United States."

He didn’t say that the government will be inconvenienced. He didn’t say that the government would be forced to muddle through by delaying payments, raising taxes, and cutting non-obligatory programs and services. He said the government will default. This means that the government doesn’t have enough cash to pay its obligations to the many and sundry persons to whom it owes cash unless Congress authorizes an issue of even more debt.

The giant banks have been sucking money out of the real economy and making us all poorer. But the government is refusing to even rein in the mega-banks, let alone break them up. One of the too big to fails - JP Morgan - manipulates the silver market. See this, this, this, this and this.

According to the National Inflation Association, JP Morgan is “short 30,000 silver contracts representing 150 million ounces of silver. This is one of the largest concentrated short positions in the history of all commodities, representing 31% of all open COMEX silver contracts.” This could leave JP Morgan exposed if people go out and buy physical silver in large numbers.

Mike Krieger and Max Keiser have an idea for attacking the weak underbelly of the seemingly invincible too big to fail banks and market manipulators ... all at the same time. Specifically, they say that if everyone buys just 1 ounce of silver, it will force JP Morgan - a giant manipulator of the silver market - to cover its short positions, and drive it out of business.

from financial times: At the US Embassy in London, there is a waiting list that none of the officials likes to discuss. On the list are Americans hoping to give up their citizenship, as they seek shelter from the Internal Revenue Service.

One lawyer fighting for her clients’ right to do so is Suzanne Reisman, a former civil rights campaigner, who is now a private-client lawyer in Mayfair, central London.

“You make a lot of sacrifices when you have to pay US taxes and live outside the country for a long time. But you also make a lot of sacrifices when you give up your passport,” she says.

Having lived in London since 1998, Ms Reisman herself has considered giving up her US passport. But she probably won’t. “I don’t think I want to die in the UK,” she says...

marijuana workers join union in california

from allgov: A California union made up largely of grocery store and retail clerks has reached out to employees of local marijuana clubs, looking to the day when legal recreational use of cannabis could mean thousands of new workers to organize.

About 100 marijuana workers in Oakland will join the 26,000-member United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5 in San Jose, making the union the first in the country to organize employees of marijuana-related businesses.

Some political observers think the union’s move could help legitimize marijuana usage and build support for a November ballot measure (the Control and Tax Cannabis initiative) that would legalize cannabis possession and use for adults 21 and over. Such a major change in law could lead to a thriving new industry, create more jobs and produce higher revenues through taxation of marijuana sales, advocates argue.

California voters are currently split over the idea of legalization, 49% of likely voters in favor and 48% opposed, according to a new poll by the Public Policy Institute of California, although other polls have shown strong support for legalization.
