sexual assault charges against ex-imf chief dismissed

dominique strauss-kahn walks free from new york court
sexual assault charges against ex-imf chief dismissed: dominique strauss-kahn walks free from new york courtfrom guardian: Dominique Strauss-Kahn, one of France's leading politicians, has walked free from a New York courtroom after a judge ordered the dropping of sexual assault charges against him for allegedly attacking a hotel maid. The move could resurrect his seemingly dead political career in France, and almost brings an end to a dramatic legal tussle that has gripped both sides of the Atlantic. The judge, Michael Obus, told the packed court he would comply with a request from the prosecution to throw the case out. "The indictment is dismissed," he said.

oregon rep announces resignation after sexual misconduct allegations

oregon rep announces resignation after sexual misconduct allegationsfrom oregonian: Rep. David Wu announced his resignation from Congress today, moments after U.S. senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden called for his resignation. The Democrat said in a statement that he would leave office after Congress resolves the debt ceiling crisis. "With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues." The Oregonian reported on Friday that Wu had been accused of an unwanted sexual encounter with the 18-year-old daughter of a childhood friend. The incident occurred in Orange County last year. Wu's announcement came only minutes after Oregon's two Democratic senators - Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley - called on him to resign, saying the embattled lawmaker had lost his ability to effectively serve in the wake of accusations of improper sexual conduct that "are both jarring and exceptionally serious." The joint statement from the two senators came four days after reports that Wu engaged in unwanted sexual activity with the 18-year-old daughter of a childhood friend and contributor. The incident allegedly took place last November in Orange County, Calif.

'barbie video girl' in fbi cross hairs

barbie video camera streams & downloads to computer
'barbie video girl' in fbi cross hairsfrom threat level: A Barbie doll tricked out with a video camera concealed in her necklace could be used by predators to create child pornography, warns the FBI in a recent cybercrime alert. In the alert, mistakenly released to the press, the FBI expressed concern that the toy’s camera, which can capture 30 minutes of video and rivals a Canon 7D in quality, could be used to lure children and surreptitiously film child pornography. Barbie and other dolls have been used in the past by sexual predators to attract victims.

According to ABC News, which obtained a copy of the memo, the FBI appears to have opened an investigation into the doll. Mattel, the maker of Barbie Video Girl, noted in a statement that the FBI didn’t say it knew of any cases where the Barbie camera had been used for such nefarious purposes.

But a sheriff’s spokesman told ABC News that the FBI alert will be helpful for drawing attention to investigators collecting evidence at a crime scene. “When we’re doing a search warrant looking for media that a child pornographer may have used, we’re gonna have to put Barbie on the list just like any other cameras [and] computers,” said Sgt. John Urquhart from the King County Sheriff’s Department in Washington state.

portland police arrest 10 in underage prostitution sting

video update: 100s arrested in child prostitution bust
from the portlander: The Portland Police Bureau participated with the FBI and other local Police Agencies last weekend in Operation Cross Country targeting Child Sexual Trafficking. The FBI coordinated these stings as part of Operation Cross Country V, the fifth such national law enforcement action under the FBI’s Innocence Lost National Initiative. Nationwide, this operation recovered 69 children, and it included enforcement actions involving more than 2100 local, state and federal officers representing 186 separate agencies in 40 cities across the United States. In addition to the 10 arrested in Portland, 9 other adults were arrested by other area agencies and 3 girls are believed to have been rescued (though we do not have the details at this time). The Portland Police Bureau did not recover any underage girls, but made 10 arrests in cooperation with this mission.

iran starts a reactor, while israel has 'hundreds of nuclear bombs'

israel says iranian reactor use 'totally unacceptable'
iran starts a reactor, while israel has 'hundreds of nuclear bombs'from ap: Trucks rumbled into Iran's first reactor Saturday to begin loading tons of uranium fuel in a long-delayed startup touted by officials as both a symbol of the country's peaceful intentions to produce nuclear energy as well as a triumph over Western pressure to rein in its nuclear ambitions.

The Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant will be internationally supervised, including a pledge by Russia to safeguard it against materials being diverted for any possible use in creating nuclear weapons. Iran's agreement to allow the oversight was a rare compromise by the Islamic state over its atomic program.

Western powers have cautiously accepted the deal as a way to keep spent nuclear fuel from crossing over to any military use. They say it illustrates their primary struggle: to block Iran's drive to create material that could be used for nuclear weapons and not its pursuit of peaceful nuclear power.

Iran has long declared it has a right like other nations to produce nuclear energy. The country's nuclear chief described the startup as a "symbol of Iranian resistance and patience."

"Despite all pressure, sanctions and hardships imposed by Western nations, we are now witnessing the startup of the largest symbol of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities," Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters inside the plant with its cream-colored dome overlooking the Persian Gulf in southern Iran.

geopolitiks/warwhores: powderkegs looking for sparks

drills, bolton, harvard - putting pieces together
from of goats & men: We mentioned in the blog earlier how John Bolton thinks an Iran attack must proceed within days if it is to occur at all. Terror drills and military exercises have begun in Korea. Harvard has divested itself from Israeli investments which one could speculate has to do with fear of war in the Middle East. Gold is on the rise. None of this definitely means war is coming, but it certainly suggests it could very well be.

What’s the big deal, an Israeli reserve officer asks. “There’s no violence or intention to humiliate anyone in the pictures,” Eden Abergil tells Army Radio. “I know I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. Nonetheless, the photos, taken during Abergil’s active duty and part of a gallery labeled “IDF – the best time of my life,” have drawn condemnation from Israeli and Palestinian officials alike. In a YouTube clip, IDF spokesman Captain Barak Raz calls Abergil’s photos “repulsive” and “shameful.” Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib calls them “an example of life under occupation.”

roman polanski set free after swiss reject US extradition request

flashback: interview w/ peter levenda on polanski
roman polanski set free after swiss reject US extradition requestfrom ap: The Swiss government declared renowned film director Roman Polanski a free man on Monday after rejecting a U.S. request to extradite him on a charge of having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.

The Swiss mostly blamed U.S. authorities for failing to provide confidential testimony about Polanski's sentencing procedure in 1977-1978.

The stunning decision could end the United States' three-decade pursuit of Polanski, unless he travels to another country that would be willing to apprehend him and weigh sending him to Los Angeles. France, where he has spent much of his time, does not extradite its own citizens, and the public scrutiny over Switzerland's deliberations may dissuade other nations from making such a spectacular arrest.

The Swiss government said it had sought confidential testimony given on Jan. 26 by Roger Gunson, the Los Angeles attorney in charge of the original prosecution against Polanski. Washington rejected the request. "Mr. Polanski can now move freely. Since 12:30 today he's a free man," Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf declared.

obama/bush retains right to detain people with no habeas review

court denies habeas corpus rights
obama/bush retains right to detain people with no habeas reviewfrom nytimes: A federal appeals court ruled Friday that three men who had been detained by the United States military for years without trial in Afghanistan had no recourse to American courts. The decision was a broad victory for the Obama administration in its efforts to hold terrorism suspects overseas for indefinite periods without judicial oversight.

The detainees, two Yemenis and a Tunisian who say they were captured outside Afghanistan, contend that they are not terrorists and are being mistakenly imprisoned at the American military prison at Bagram Air Base.

But a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled unanimously that the three had no right to habeas corpus hearings, in which judges would review evidence against them and could order their release. The court reasoned that Bagram was on the sovereign territory of another government and emphasized the “pragmatic obstacles” of giving hearings to detainees “in an active theater of war.”

The ruling dealt a severe blow to wider efforts by lawyers to extend a landmark 2008 Supreme Court ruling granting habeas corpus rights to prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. A lower court judge had previously ruled that the three Bagram detainees were entitled to the same rights, although he had found that others captured in Afghanistan and held there were not.

A lawyer for the detainees, Tina Foster, said that if the precedent stood, Mr. Obama and future presidents would have a free hand to “kidnap people from other parts of the world and lock them away for the rest of their lives” without having to prove in court that their suspicions about such prisoners were accurate.

the end of days? so many antichrists, so little time

the end of days? so many antichrists, so little timefrom news junkie post: Amid the current scandal involving Pope Benedict XVI, speculation has increased that perhaps Christs very own vicar on earth is none other than the great deceiver. The Antichrist, the harbinger of the end-times, the deceiver who hides behind a facade of goodness. Joseph Ratzinger is a past member of the Hitler Youth and current pederast enabler, cloaked in his holy vestments, holding the faith of billions in the palm of his hands. Many seem to think that the only way to see him clearly is through the nebulous lens of biblical prophecy.

Many evangelicals believe that the Antichrist, or Beast, is a political leader that will carry a message of hope for the people of the world. Many of those same evangelicals believe that there are, in fact, more than one Antichrist working in concert to usher in the end times. The first would be the political leader, followed by a religious leader who gives credibility to the first. The second beast of the book of Revelations would then encourage the masses to first accept, then trust, and finally worship the first beast...
