Expanded Role Proposed for 'Elite' Military Forces

from nytimes.com: As the United States turns increasingly to Special Operations forces to confront developing threats scattered around the world, the nation’s top Special Operations officer, a member of the Navy Seals who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, is seeking new authority to move his forces faster and outside of normal Pentagon deployment channels.

The officer, Adm. William H. McRaven, who leads the Special Operations Command, is pushing for a larger role for his elite units who have traditionally operated in the dark corners of American foreign policy. The plan would give him more autonomy to position his forces and their war-fighting equipment where intelligence and global events indicate they are most needed.

It would also allow the Special Operations forces to expand their presence in regions where they have not operated in large numbers for the past decade, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

While President Obama and his Pentagon’s leadership have increasingly made Special Operations forces their military tool of choice, similar plans in the past have foundered because of opposition from regional commanders and the State Department. The military’s regional combatant commanders have feared a decrease of their authority, and some ambassadors in crisis zones have voiced concerns that commandos may carry out missions that are perceived to tread on a host country’s sovereignty, like the rift in ties with Pakistan after the Bin Laden raid.

kim jong il is dead, long live kim jong un!

north korea's longtime leader & cult of personality dead at 69*
north korea's longtime leader & cult of personality dead at 69from cnn: North Korea's longtime leader Kim Jong Il, the embodiment of the reclusive state where his cult of personality is deeply entrenched, has died. He was believed to be 69. Regarded as one of the world's most-repressive leaders, Kim Jong Il always cut a slightly bizarre figure. His diminutive stature and characteristically bouffant hair have been parodied by some in the West. "He's a mysterious person -- I think by design," said Han S. Park, director of the Center for the Study of Global Issues at the University of Georgia and a frequent visitor to North Korea. "Mystery is a source of leverage and power. It's maintaining uncertainty." But for the citizens of his Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim was well regarded.

young heir faces uncertain transition in north korea
from nytimes: With the abrupt death of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, the fate of his isolated, nuclear-armed regime has dropped into the hands of his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, who is such an unknown that the world did not even know for sure what he looked like until last year. But the biggest enigma may be whether the younger Mr. Kim will be able to hold onto power in this last bastion of hard-line Communism, much less prevent its impoverished economy from collapsing.

north korea's neighbors on alert, west hopes for opening
from reuters: North Korea's neighbors and its old enemy the United States appealed for stability on Monday after the death of leader Kim Jong-il plunged one of the world's most heavily militarized regions into fresh uncertainty. China and Russia offered condolences and support for their ally's new leaders, while Western states expressed hope that a change in leadership could ease North Korea out of decades of extreme isolation and better the lives of its suffering people... South Korea, still technically at war with the North, put its military on alert after the news of the death, Yonhap news agency said, and President Lee Myung-bak convened its National Security Council.

israel hopes death of n. korea leader will damage ties with iran
from haaretz: The death of Kim Jong Il raises the possibility that the alliance between North Korea and Iran will flag, just as their third partner, Syria, is also weakening.

US aides 'believe' china 'probably' examined stealth copter in pakistan

video: sultry drama continues after seal team 6 assassinated*
from nytimes: In the days after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Pakistan’s intelligence service probably allowed Chinese military engineers to examine the wreckage of a stealth American helicopter that crashed during the operation, according to American officials and others familiar with the classified intelligence assessments... American officials cautioned that they did not yet have definitive proof that the Chinese were allowed to visit to Abbottabad... Several Pakistani officials reached on Sunday declined to comment. The American assessments were disclosed Sunday by The Financial Times. The newspaper cited Pakistani officials who denied the accusations.

nearly 500 taliban flee in 'daring' afghan jailbreak

surprise! signs of 'inside job' in afghan jailbreak
nearly 500 taliban flee in 'daring' afghan jailbreakfrom afp: Almost 500 Taliban fighters and commanders tunnelled out of a prison in an audacious jailbreak in southern Afghanistan which the government admitted on Monday was a security "disaster". The Taliban said it was behind the operation to free the inmates through a 360-metre tunnel into Kandahar prison which it been digging for five months. It claimed all those who escaped were Taliban, including over 100 commanders. The daring breakout in the Taliban's heartland, the prison's second in three years, threatens to undermine recent gains claimed by NATO forces in the area after a US-led troop surge, just as the annual fighting season begins. It is also a major embarrassment for Afghan forces who are due to take on greater responsibility for security in their country ahead of the planned withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

obama declares national state of emergency over libya

is obama about to order the military to invade libya?
obama declares national state of emergency over libyafrom foreign policy: President Obama issued an executive order Friday evening that imposes immediate sanctions on Libyan ruler Muammar al Qaddafi, his sons and his accomplices in the slaughter of civilians. In a letter accompanying the order, Obama declared a national emergency over the situation. "I have determined that the actions of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, his government, and close associates, including extreme measures against the people of Libya, constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. The order declares a national emergency to deal with this threat," Obama wrote in the letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)...

US admits american arrested for murder in pakistan worked for cia

US admits american arrested for murder in pakistan worked for ciafrom allgov: Classified a “diplomat” by the Obama administration until Monday [feb21], the man arrested in Pakistan for killing two men in Lahore has turned out to be employed by the CIA.After conducting interviews in the U.S. and Pakistan, the British newspaper The Guardian concluded that Raymond Davis was a former Army Special Forces soldier now employed by the CIA. One senior Pakistani intelligence official was quoted as saying, “It’s beyond a shadow of a doubt” that Davis was working for the spy agency at the time he gunned down two Pakistanis. Davis has been charged with murder by Pakistani police. He shot the two men allegedly for trying to rob him while he was driving through Lahore. Local authorities say the American was found to be carrying a Glock handgun, a flashlight attached to a headband, a pocket telescope, three cell phones, facial disguises and multiple ID cards. He is reported to have worked for years for as a mercenary for the CIA, including as a period with Xe, the private security contractor formerly known as Blackwater... Many Pakistanis have been enraged by the news of an armed American gunning down local citizens. If the U.S. convinces the Pakistan government to turn Davis over to American authorities, Egyptian-style anti-government protests could erupt, analysts say. The government has said it will wait until March 14 to decide what to do with Davis.

on deathbed, globalist holbrooke called for end of afghan war

on deathbed, globalist holbrooke called for end of afghan warfrom kurt nimmo: Richard Holbrooke, Obama’s point man on Pakistan and Afghanistan, has died following a second round of surgery to treat a heart condition. Officialdom and the corporate media are in mourning. Praise for the one-worlder gluts the media. “The international community is praising the legacy of veteran U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, who died Monday at the age of 69 while serving as the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan,” reports the CIA propaganda outfit, Voice of America. “You’ve got to stop this war in Afghanistan,” he told his Pakistani surgeon before he was sedated for his final surgery, according to the Washsington Post.

Holbrooke was Clinton’s ambassador to Germany. He was a Wall Street investment banker and a senior advisor to Lehman Brothers, the global financial services corporation that cooked its books at the end of each quarter to make its finances appear less shaky than they really were. He was also a former Vice Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston.

cablegate: wikileaks unveils secret state dept cables

cablegate: secret US diplomatic cables released by wikileaks
cablegate: wikileaks unveils secret state dept cablesfrom washington post: A vast treasure trove of secret State Department cables obtained by the Web site WikiLeaks has exposed the inner workings of U.S. diplomacy, as well as bluntly candid assessments by American diplomats, according to news organizations granted advance access to the more than 250,000 confidential documents. The documents suggest U.S. diplomats were ordered to engage in low-level spying by obtaining foreign diplomats' personal information, such as frequent-flier and credit card numbers, presumably to better track their movements. The cables also expose the sensitive diplomacy involved in winning sanctions against Iran; U.S. officials' attempts to remove highly enriched uranium from Pakistan; and new information on how North Korea is believed to have aided Tehran's weaponry program, giving it advanced missiles that could allow it to strike Moscow and major Western European cities.
