Oregon Oddities and West Virginia Worry: This Mortal Coil

Dr. Peter Goodwin, Father of OR Suicide Law, Takes Own Life
from oregonlive.com: Peter Goodwin, the first doctor in Oregon to campaign publicly for the terminally ill to obtain medical help in ending their lives, died Sunday shortly after exercising the right he fought to secure. He was 83. Goodwin's four adult children and their spouses surrounded him in his Terwilliger Plaza apartment when he took a planned overdose of a prescribed drug Sunday.

Federal Prisoners in WV Test MP3 Player Program
from wtrf.com: Hundreds of female inmates at a federal prison in West Virginia are testing a program to bring the quality of entertainment behind bars into the 21st century. More than 400 inmates have spent about $70 apiece to buy MP3 players from the commissary in the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson. U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley says the program is essentially a technology update because inmates have been able to buy radios for decades. If it works in West Virginia, it will be rolled out to other federal facilities in late spring or early summer. Billingsley says keeping inmates occupied helps promote safety, particularly in overcrowded prisons where stress, conflict and the risk of violence is high.

obama would 'rather be a really good one-term president'

from raw replay: President Barack Obama greeted ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer with a kiss to begin their interview Monday. But an awkward moment soon followed when Sawyer asked the president if the job was ever so difficult that he would consider not running for a second term. “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president,” said Obama. This video is from ABC’s World News, broadcast Jan. 25, 2010.

obamessiah: downhill dictatorship, definitions & detainments

president obama: a fraud you can believe in
president obama: a fraud you can believe infrom the bulletin: The hopes and prayers of the American people have finally been answered with the election of a new president: A fraud they can believe in. Yes, and even as Barack Obama demonstrates he is a fraud, phony and hypocrite par excellence - who also happens to be in way over his head - the American people still believe in him. Yes, love is grand and his approval rating is still miraculously high. If the truth were known, that approval rating would be sinking lower than the stock market, home prices or the economy. I doubted he was the Messiah, but now I’m not sure. When a president can be the greatest wealth destroyer in history and still maintain high approval ratings, maybe he does have supernatural powers. What’s more he is god-like. It is said God so loved the poor that he made many of them; Mr. Obama is almost outdoing God by turning so many into poor people.

obama is pushing US economy downhill
from russia today: Obama's policy is pushing the US economy downhill, says vice president of the conservative Business & Media Institute Dan Gainor. U.S. President Barack Obama signed his first government spending bill, worth $410 billion, to fund most government operations through to September 30. The bill is filled with pet projects, so called 'earmarks', a practice Obama had promised to get rid of. The President himself called the document 'imperfect', but necessary.

audio: guns & butter w/ michel chossudovsky:
obama budget will impoverish US

from global research: The administration's 2010 budget will entail the most drastic curtailment in public spending in American history, leading to social havoc and the potential impoverishment of millions of people. Defense spending and bank bailouts will consume all government revenue resulting in fiscal collapse that will lead to the privatization of the state.

why the US under obama is still a dictatorship
from future of freedom foundation: Two weeks ago, when the Obama administration announced that it was bringing to an end the disturbing isolation endured by Ali al-Marri, a U.S. resident who has been held without charge or trial for seven years and two months - and who, most worryingly, has spent the last five years and nine months as an “enemy combatant” in solitary confinement in the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston, South Carolina - it was clear that one of the Bush administration’s most arrogant and un-American policies was coming to an end. President Obama clearly regarded al-Marri’s imprisonment as significant, as he issued a presidential memorandum on his second day in office ordering the Justice Department to review the Qatari national’s case, and the announcement that al-Marri was to be moved out of his seemingly endless legal limbo and into the federal court system demonstrated that, in this specific case at least, the president was sticking to his word... As a result, you may be thinking that the president no longer has the power to hold Americans without charge or trial as “enemy combatants,” but if this is the case then you may be — and should be — dismayed to learn that a previous ruling to this effect still stands, which was not addressed by the Supreme Court, and which has not been addressed by the Obama administration either.

obama administration withdraws 'enemy combatant' definition
from thinkprogress: Today, the Obama Justice Department abandoned one of the most prominent phrases of the Bush administration - “enemy combatant.” In a filing with the DC District Court, the DoJ said that it would no longer use the term and asserted a new standard for the government’s authority to hold detainees at Gitmo. The Obama administration is still claiming that it has the authority to hold prisoners there, but it will now be based on authority from Congress and the international laws of war. The Bush administration claimed that the president could unilaterally hold prisoners without charge.

obama creates food-safety group
obama creates food-safety groupfrom washington times: President Obama on Saturday created a food safety working group to advise him on new rules and tools to protect the U.S. food supply and tapped two people to serve at the top of the Food and Drug Administration. Mr. Obama said food-borne illness outbreaks have increased in recent years - including major incidents of tainted spinach in 2006, salmonella in peppers or tomatoes last year and the peanut outbreak this year. He said that means the U.S. must do more than it has been and called on his food safety group, led by the secretaries the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, to give him recommendations.

it looks like 2009 is going to be a very 'sorry' year

here's something fluffy to let you off the hook for a minute...
it looks like 2009 is going to be a very 'sorry' yearfrom fresno bee: I know it's a little early to call, but I'm thinking 2009 is going to be the year of "I screwed up."

We'll start right at the top. Our president uttered those words a little more than a week ago when some of his Cabinet appointments took an embarrassing turn. And while President Obama got a lot of fun and furor poked at him by the conservative talk-radio gabbers, I found something earnest and transparent in standing up and saying, "Yeah, my bad."

And this week? Alex Rodriguez - baseball's biggest name and the guy who was supposed to cleanly bring the game out of the steroid era - got busted for being on The Juice. What does the ever-sly A-Rod do? Owns up. Apologizes. True, true, he only admitted it once he was caught, a PR ploy for sure. But he's willing to wear the "I screwed up" tag when Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens aren't.

Which brings us to Michael Phelps, who went from Olympic hero to High Times with one picture of him hitting a bong with some college kids. Are you surprised? I'm not. Come on, he's listens to Lil Wayne a lot. And did you see Katie Couric's interview with Lil Wayne? Wow. But back to Phelps: He also played the "I screwed up" card. "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment."

Exhibit Four: Christian Bale. (Can I just stop here and emphasize how it has been a fun couple of drama-filled weeks). Bale let loose a tirade on the set of his upcoming film, "Terminator Salvation," dropping something like 37 F-bombs at a lighting guy. Bale, being Batman and all, had to step up and act noble. "I acted like a punk," he said on Los Angeles radio station KROQ (FM 106.7). "I regret that. ... I make no excuses."

This reminds me of "The Karate Kid," when young Daniel LaRusso apologizes to girlfriend Elisabeth Shue with the simple, "I'm a jerk." It worked. And next thing you know, he's kickin' Cobra Kai butt at the karate tournament. Are you listening, Chris Brown? Are you listening, lady who gave birth to octuplets?

We Americans are, for the most part, good people. We forgive. Yes, we will absorb every bit of celebrity scandal TMZ will throw at us and every bit of regular-life gone awry that "The Today Show" airs - but at the end of the day, we'll be OK with "I screwed up." (Note: This does NOT apply to you, Casey Anthony).

But come on, Nadya Suleman, all we want you to say is, "Yeah, having this many kids probably wasn't the best idea considering my financial situation. I may have screwed up." Then we'll let you go off and negotiate a reality show, "Nadya Plus 14" or whatever.

And Chris Brown, teen heartthrob turned alleged girlfriend beater, a mea culpa wouldn't hurt your image, either. Note to readers: If you have a problem with anything I've said here, e-mail me. My response will be: "I screwed up."

bart simpson used to promote scientology
bart simpson used to promote scientologyfrom wikinews: Nancy Cartwright, 51, who is a long time member of the Church of Scientology, has created a recording using her voice of Bart Simpson as part of a robocall promotion. The message surfaced early Wednesday morning on YouTube. During the message, Cartwright states that "This is a special message" and announces a Scientology conference this coming weekend at the grand ballroom of the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles where she has a speaking engagement. The message ends with a toll free number to call to RSVP... The Simpsons executives did not authorize this usage of intellectual property in this manner. lights, camera… covert action: deep politics of hollywood
lights, camera… covert action: deep politics of hollywoodfrom global research: Here we build a prima facae case supporting the idea that Hollywood continues to be a target for infiltration and subversion by a variety of state agencies, in particular the CIA. Academic debates on cinematic propaganda are almost entirely retrospective, and whilst a number of commentators have drawn attention to Hollywood’s longstanding and open relationship with the Pentagon, little of substance has been written about the more clandestine influences working through Hollywood in the post-9/11 world. As such, our work delves into the field of what Peter Dale Scott calls "deep politics"; namely, activities which cannot currently be fully understood due to the covert influence of shadowy power players... Many would recoil at the thought of modern Hollywood cinema being used as a propagandist tool, but the facts seem to speak for themselves. Do agencies such as the CIA have the power, like the Pentagon, to affect movie content by providing much-sought-after expertise, locations and other benefits? Or are they able to affect script changes through simple persuasion, or even coercion? Do they continue to carry out covert actions in Hollywood as they did so extensively in the 1950s, and, beyond cinema, might covert government influence play some part in the creation of national security messages in TV series such as 24 and Alias (the star of the latter, Jennifer Garner, even made an unpaid recruitment video for the CIA)? The notion that covert agencies aspire to be more open is hard to take seriously when they provide such scant information about their role within the media, even regarding activities from decades past. The spy may have come in from the cold, but he continues to shelter in the shadows of the movie theatre.

carlos slim stake a danger to ny timesfrom editor & publisher: Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu's $250 million loan to The New York Times Co. is "an ominous move" by a "capitalist with loyalties to a foreign state," The Seattle Times said in an unsigned editorial Tuesday. "Major media companies should not be in the hands of a capitalist with loyalties to a foreign state," the editorial declared... Tuesday's editorial states the paper's principle right in the headline: "Newspaper ownership matters in American democracy." Slim has said he has no intention of using the loan - and an earlier purchase of a 6.4% stake in Times Co. - to influence the paper's coverage or editorializing.

digital conversion deadline looms as the psyop grows
digital conversion deadline looms as the psyop growsfrom usa today: Two weeks from today, an estimated 7 million households that rely on analog television sets - ones that work off antennas - could see their screens go blank. The temptation is to say, too bad. People had plenty of warning about the impending nationwide switch to digital TV, and an opportunity to apply for $40 coupons toward the cost of converter boxes. Unfortunately, the federal government has so fouled up the changeover that a delay in the Feb. 17 deadline is the least bad alternative.

update: house approves digital tv transition delay
from pcmag: Get ready for a summertime DTV transition. The House on Wednesday approved a bill to move the DTV transition from February 17 to June 12, by a vote of 264 to 158. The Senate approved the measure last week, so it now moves to President Obama, who is expected to sign the bill into law.

fbi didn't keep tabs on 'alleged comedian' carlin's 7 words
from ap: Talk about irony. George Carlin spent decades pushing the bounds of free speech by saying the seven words you can never say on television, but not one of them made it into an FBI file on him. Among the 12 pages in a file recently released by Carlin's family are a couple of letters from outraged citizens who complained that the comedian had made fun of the FBI and its director, J. Edgar Hoover, during TV appearances in 1969 and 1970. There's also a letter from Hoover himself thanking one of Carlin's critics for defending his honor, and an internal FBI memo that quotes the director as asking: "What do we know of Carlin?" Not much, as it turned out. The memo notes the FBI has "no data concerning Carlin" other than the two letters from his critics. "Which kind of disappoints me," laughed Carlin's daughter, Kelly Carlin McCall, who provided the file to The Associated Press. "It doesn't really cover any of his more radical 1970s stuff."

obamessiah & the inauguration ad nauseum

obamessiah & the inauguration ad nauseumfrom christopher ketcham: The American presidency in its outward show and innermost tendency has since World War II increasingly shown all the markings of monarchy. The president is hovered over and catered to by hundreds of aids and sycophants, his every whim answered at notice. He enjoys a private army in the guise of the paramilitaries in the intelligence agencies. He lives in a “White House” that is itself a court contained in a bubble where the troubles of the average man cannot penetrate. He certainly does not walk often among the people, but when he does, he allows the people to touch him as they would a king, the black-suited guard walling him off, his contempt expressed in direct proportion to the ceremony, noise, trumpets, curtains, light, music, and entertainments meant to ensure that we understand this is no mere man but an ur-expression of power itself.

Hence, the pomp of the presidential inauguration, which now, under Barack Obama, is expected to become the most expensive in US history. One estimate is that the total cost for the festivities of January 20, and in the days running up to it and after, will rise above $150 million. (By contrast, the 2005 swearing-in of George W. Bush, as profligate an executive as ever imagined, cost $42 million.) Of the $150 million budgeted to handle the millions of people who will descend on Washington, and to finance the lavish parties, the assignations in backrooms, the dying lobsters and the champagne uncorked, just $45 million - an obscene sum alone - has been offered up by private donors. The rest, which includes an emergency $75 million requested from the federal government by the city of DC for transportation costs and for the ever-effective bugaboo of "security," will be drawn from the pockets of taxpayers. We the people will also fund a mass prayer service as the cherry on top.

Oh happy day! Thus doth Change descend among us in the same old purple raiment and with the smiling largesse that the peons pay for. January 20 is a historic wasted opportunity. Obama might have signaled real change from the outset by canceling the whole rotten affair as the waste and silliness and ostentation that it is. Instead, a simple address, televised or better yet on radio, would have sufficed. Something like the following: “My fellow Americans, this is no time for frivolity. The country is falling down around our ears! The reason is mostly because we have blown our money in bad investments, whether it be in war or on Wall Street or on Main Street. Let’s not flush millions of dollars more down the toilet in self-congratulation and the flatus of long speeches. Nuff said. See you tomorrow when the work begins.” Click.

the new world order is almost in place

the new world order is almost in placefrom rogue government: The New World Order is for the most part already here. This might be a horrible fact for most to accept but unfortunately it is a reality. For many years we have had international institutions like the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization and many others actively working towards global government. Phony free trade deals like NAFTA, CAFTA and others have been utilized to tear down borders between nations and usher in a new age of globalization. Prominent individuals such as George HW Bush, David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, Gordon Brown, Bill Clinton, Gary Hart and several others have spoken about the possibility of forming a global government or a New World Order. Despite the revelations from these men, it has continually been dismissed as conspiracy theory by the corporate controlled mockingbird media. In fact Kissinger, the former Secretary of State under Richard Nixon, spoke yet again about a New World Order during a CNBC interview and recently wrote an opinion editorial published in the International Herald Tribune entitled “The Chance for a New World Order”. If the New World Order is a conspiracy theory, why is it that prominent individuals amongst the U.S. and European political elite continue to talk about it?

the enemy is us!

the enemy is us!from existentialist cowboy: The very word 'Frankenstein' has come to mean 'monsters of our own creation' but more generally, monsters beyond our control. 'Frankenstein' has come to symbolize the Faustian bargain made by man with his own technology. The '50's Sci-Fi classic, Forbidden Planet, echoed Shakespeare's The Tempest which, likewise, dealt with the same theme. [See: Monsters From the ID]

The world is now threatened with several forms of extinction:
* a slow demise from the disregard with which we have treated our environment;

* a descent into either lawlessness or fascism for our neglect of the rule of law;

* the prospect of a quick but not painless end from nuclear annihilation.
These monsters threaten to destroy us utterly. These monsters are our own creations. These monsters are the by-products of the Faustian bargain mankind has made with the universe. These monsters are 'Frankensteins' of our creation. Or, as Pogo might have put it: 'We have seen the enemy and it is us!"

oswald's wallet, frame 313 & the dictabelt

the tale of the two wallets
the tale of the two walletsfrom george bailey: [A]fter Oswald is arrested at the movie theater he refused to identify himself. After searching him, his wallet is retrieved, containing an ID for Lee H. Oswald and a second ID for the Alek Hidell alias. Here comes the rub. Back at the Tippet murder scene the wallet is now in the hands of Dallas police captain W. R. Westbrook. FBI agent Robert M. Barrett appears and is asked by Westbrook if he knows whom Lee Oswald or Alek Hidell is. Apparently Capt. Westbrook examined the contents. Barrett says no. You would think this would be a damning piece of evidence to put Oswald away for the Tippet murder, but that is not the case. The wallet seems to fade in out of the story. Barrett does not report this incident in his official FBI report but does tell James Hosty when he is writing his book (Assignment: Oswald, 1966) about the details of his visit to the murder scene and being asked about Oswald/Hidell.

'frame 313: the jfk assassination theories'
from hartford courant: This documentary sets out five theories about who killed President Kennedy, including the Warren Commission conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. It doesn't promote a conspiracy-based alternative, though after hearing about evidence assembled by the 1977-79 congressional investigation, plus claims of CIA and/or Mafia involvement from various authorities, it's almost impossible to believe there wasn't more to it than Oswald. There are any number of people who claim knowledge of, or even involvement in, the plot. There's even a guy in prison who says he shot Kennedy from the grassy knoll. I was aware of the gist of these other theories (which all involve the CIA or Mafia or both) but not the details. This is an immensely interesting, informative, provocative movie.

5 things you didn't know: jfk assassination
5 things you didn't know: jfk assassinationfrom askmen.com: It’s not uncommon for death to be good business, but in the case of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, it has become an industry unto itself. And what’s easy to overlook as you click through the phenomenal amount of information concerning the event - such as the locales, films and nonsense conspiracy theories -- is that a man lost his life in a brutal manner. That said, and with the recent discovery of files related to the assassination by the Dallas County D.A.’s office, we felt it was time to uncover five things you didn’t know about the JFK assassination...
1- Woody Harrelson’s father was an informal suspect
2- The public first saw the assassination footage 12 years after the shooting
3- 32 cameras were in Dealey Plaza
4- Before 9/11, it was the longest uninterrupted news event in TV history
5- At least one bystander was wounded

what if rfk had survived?
from arthur schlesinger jr: Yet his memory haunts us still - his memory and the sense that things might have been different had he lived. Five books about him have recently been or are soon to be published. His face on the television screen evokes poignant feelings of loss. Radicals remember him as the last hope of traditional politics; liberals mourn a lost leader; some conservatives now even claim him as one of their own.

the remastermind: dictaphone expert helps refine JFK recordingfrom corvallis gazette times: It has been 45 years since Bill McWilliams first became immersed in the continuing investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. “I was right in the middle of it all,” he says. He still is, in his own way. From his home in North Albany, McWilliams works with engineers at the Lawrence Livermore National Loboratory in California, trying to determine the exact number of shots fired in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 22, 1963.

author sees 'redemptive violence' at work in JFK's deathfrom abilene reporter news: Catholic peace activist Jim Douglass of Birmingham, Ala., believes in conspiracy theories, including the Big Daddy of them all -- the conspiracy to kill President John F. Kennedy. "There is no mystery as to how and why and by whom he was assassinated," Douglass said. And he's not referring to Lee Harvey Oswald, who he believes was framed as the assassin by the Central Intelligence Agency. Kennedy's enemies were covert operatives in his own government, Douglass alleges. "He was killed by a high-level national security state organized by the CIA," he said. "He was not carrying out what his national security state wanted."

yankee doodle deadly

yankee doodle deadlyfrom tv news lies: Here they come again – the Sousa bands, the waving flags, the cheering crowds, and the fabulous fireworks. Ah, yes, it’s Yankee Doodle time again in America. So let’s get ready to party.

It’s just that I really don’t understand what we’re celebrating.

I don’t really understand why millions of people in this country still pretend that they live in America the Beautiful. I don’t understand why they are not wailing in grief because Yankee Doodle is no longer “dandy.” I don’t understand why there is no widespread sadness about the tragic transformation of their national image.

is everything seemingly spinning out of control?

is everything seemingly spinning out of control?from ap: Midwestern levees are bursting. Polar bears are adrift. Gas prices are skyrocketing. Home values are abysmal. Air fares, college tuition and health care border on unaffordable. Wars without end rage in Iraq, Afghanistan and against terrorism.
Horatio Alger, twist in your grave.

The can-do, bootstrap approach embedded in the American psyche is under assault. Eroding it is a dour powerlessness that is chipping away at the country's sturdy conviction that destiny can be commanded with sheer courage and perseverance.

The sense of helplessness is even reflected in this year's presidential election. Each contender offers a sense of order - and hope. Republican John McCain promises an experienced hand in a frightening time. Democrat Barack Obama promises bright and shiny change, and his large crowds believe his exhortation, "Yes, we can."

uss 9/11, 'incompetent' criticism & the o.c.t.

US christens '9/11 steel' warship
US christens '9/11 steel' warshipfrom bbc: Thousands of people have gathered in Louisiana for the christening of a US warship built partly from steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. The twin towers in New York were destroyed in the hijacked planes attack of 11 September 2001. Friends and families of 9/11 victims were among those at the ceremony for the new amphibious assault ship, the USS New York, in the base of Avondale. The bow contains 7.5 tonnes of steel taken from Ground Zero. It also bore a shield with two bars to symbolise the towers and a banner with the slogan Never Forget. flashback: twin towers wreckage turning up all over the place

'incompetent' criticism: 9/11, phillip shenon & the biggest lie in history
from crimes of the state: I'll cut to the chase: the cover up of 9/11 was all about hiding incompetence; that is the opinion of Philip Shenon and the gaggle of book reviewers who promote his tome over at Big Media. Let's make the crucial distinction up front: It's not "incompetence" if done intentionally. This unthinkable concept has never made it up to the editors and reporters of America's well-paid professional journalism class. There can only be unintentional incompetence, and never purposeful malfeasance: never agency of treason. Such myths would be comforting if there weren't a long and despicable history of such government crimes to draw upon - something professional journalists are supposed to be aware of, yet never seem to write about.

'official conspiracy theory' believed only by 'hypocrites & fools'
'official conspiracy theory' believed only by 'hypocrites & fools'from people's voice: There is one thing that defines everyone over the course of these early years of this new century. That thing is the 9/11 attack. Everyone in government and every field of endeavor the world over is defined by their position on this event. It is not necessary to know the truth. It is only necessary to know the extent of the lies in order to define any leader in any position anywhere in the world. By what they have said and by what they have not said, one can accurately judge who is an enemy of the people's of the world. One can accurately determine who is a tool of the psychopaths or one of them.

9/11: dna, warnings & the unravelling story

9/11 victims identified from new dna finds
from guardian: A fresh effort to identify victims of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre is under way in New York following the discovery of fragments of human remains in the area around Ground Zero... "We've made numerous links to previously identified victims," said Adams. "We also have new IDs that have come out of this project. Once the DNA testing really comes full circle it will be fascinating to see how many new IDs we get."

who warned willie brown?

from 9/11 blogger: Prior to the attacks of September 11, 2001, Willie Brown, who was the incumbent mayor of San Francisco at the time, received a warning advising that Americans should be cautious about their air travel (San Francisco Chronicle 9/12/01). The warning, given to Brown eight hours before the onset of the 9/11 attacks, reportedly came from his “security people at the airport” as he tells it.

unraveling of the official 9/11 story continues
unraveling of the official 9/11 story continuesfrom people's voice: Today in America, we are witness to a great unraveling, the likes of which we have never seen before. There are no historical precedents. For many months now the official narrative about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America has been coming apart, and I mean: at the seams. The official story about that terrible day is disintegrating. The trend shows no sign of abating and in recent weeks it even appears to have accelerated. At the present rate, soon there will be nothing left of the official version of events but a discordant echo and a series of extremely rude after shocks. Is our nation prepared to face those rude shocks?

ron paul unveils economic stimulus plan
from ronpaul2008.com: Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has unveiled a comprehensive economic revitalization package.
