Kennedy was killed. Kennedy was shot and killed as his convertible made its way through the streets of Dallas, not long after he had arrived in the city. First word of shooting took even the most seasoned journalists to the breaking point. CBS News TV Anchor Walter Cronkite brought first word of the shooting by interrupting with a bulletin during a soap opera. Minutes later, NBC Radio News Anchor Edwin Newman quoted from what he called a "flash from Dallas" that two priests attending the president had said he was dead. Lee Harvey Oswald was taken into custody a short time after the assassination, but Oswald was shot dead a day later by Jack Ruby. Although many believe there were other shooters involved, the official government line is that Oswald acted alone. Oswald professed his innocence.
