kentucky warns of salmonella risk in fema-provided meals from mcclatchy: Kentucky Emergency Management officials are getting Kentuckians another source of prepared meals after the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that some meal kits might contain contaminated peanut butter. The FEMA meal kits were distributed to storm victims in Kentucky during the past week. The kits might contain peanut butter that is part of a national recall because of salmonella. The kits are manufactured by Red Cloud Food Services Inc. under the Standing Rock label. The only portion of the meals that might pose a danger is a packet of peanut butter, according to FEMA. The peanut butter packet should be thrown away, officials said. Beshear announced Thursday that the Kentucky officials are contracting with a private food vendor to secure hundreds of thousands of prepared meals. They also are handing out fliers shelters and distribution centers about the problem.
wv turkey farm fired more than 3 indicted workers from examiner: Though only three people have been indicted for alleged animal cruelty at a West Virginia turkey farm, the company says others who worked there also were fired. Aviagen Turkeys Inc. spokeswoman Sandi Hofmann wouldn't release details Friday but said the firings went beyond the workers charged in a 19-count indictment in Greenbrier County this week. Norfolk, Va.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which secretly videotaped bird-stomping and other violent acts last fall, claims Aviagen continues to employ workers it saw mistreating birds at the Lewisburg turkey farm. Hofmann disputes that, saying several other workers were fired for violating internal animal welfare policies. Aviagen Turkeys is a subsidiary of Alabama-based Aviagen Inc.
ailing wv towns with bad water sue over slurry from examiner: Maria Lambert says she never had clear, odorless, tasteless water. Sometimes it felt greasy or smelled of rotten eggs. But the day a blast from a nearby strip mine shook her southern West Virginia home, it got worse. "Immediately, there was slime that ran through the ice maker. It just looked like orange Jell-O," Lambert recalls. "It wasn't gobs, but if you would stick your glass under the spigot to get some water, you'd see it was there." Now, she and 250 people with orange and black water in their taps, tubs and toilets are suing eight coal companies they believe poisoned their wells by pumping mine wastes into former underground mines. The lawsuit filed recently in Boone County Circuit Court claims decades of surface and underground mining activities near the communities of Prenter and Seth fractured the geologic strata that had contained the slurry, a byproduct of cleaning the coal. It claims the network of cracks created a pathway for the slurry to contaminate the aquifer.
14 cited for trespassing during coal mine protest in wv from examiner: Fourteen protesters who claim a Massey Energy Co. surface mine in West Virginia could cause flooding and harm a nearby town were ticketed for trespassing Tuesday, state police said. Five of the protesters chained themselves to heavy equipment at Massey's Beetree Surface Mine on Coal River Mountain, said Sgt. Michael Baylous, who described the participants as peaceful. Eight more were cited when they insisted on seeing a company representative after delivering a letter addressed to Massey chief Don Blankenship and subsidiary Marfork Coal Co., Baylous said. A photographer who allegedly trespassed to shoot pictures of the protest also was cited, he said. Five protesters were identified as members of Climate Ground Zero and pan-Appalachian Mountain Justice, according to news release issued by the groups.

In an interview with Ben Smith of the New York Daily News, Emanuel outlined the agenda for military-style training, essentially a domestic draft, aimed at preparing Americans for a chemical or biological terrorist attack.

The disillusion and sense of betrayal may create divisions in American society that will be greater and deeper than any we have seen for a generation. The sense of hopelessness and bitter disappointment may well be - as Americans say - toxic. Then again, maybe American politics will simply get the grown-up message that no one mortal is the final answer: that the fulfilment of the American dream must always lie within the individual and not with the government. To be fair, Obama himself suggests this when he tells the crowds, "It's not about me - it's about you."

Because if the tyrants in both parties who have trampled on the vision of the founding fathers are not held accountable, then future tyrants will learn that they can get away with it, also. Now that Obama has won, there is no excuse. Those who have trampled on our country and our people must be held to account for the whole world and future generations to see.
pentagon preps for obama transition from danger room: As the ballots were cast yesterday, Jim Garamone of American Forces Press Service reported that Pentagon officials were already making room for the president-elect's transition team. This is the first wartime transition of power since the Vietnam War, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has created a task force to ensure a smooth transition. Among other things, Garamone reports that Gates was surveying top political appointees within the building to see who might be willing to stick around until their successors can take over. He quotes Pentagon flack Bryan Whitman as saying: “There are a number of people that have given an indication that if they were asked to stay on and serve as a bridge after Jan. 20 until their replacement is on board, they would do so.” The Washington Postadds that Obama's advisers are now "debating whether to ask Defense Secretary Robert M. Gatesto stay on, to allow planning for a withdrawal from Iraq to begin as soon as possible." Keeping Gates on might be a common-sense move. As Noah wrote here back in June: "[S]ince Gates has been brought in, things have started to turn. Budgets have begun to return to reality. People lose their jobs when they can't do them right. Experts in their fields are being heard. Sound policy is often trumping adherence to political orthodoxy. And the Pentagon is slowly, slowly starting to focus on today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq." Former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, one of Obama's top national security advisers and another possible candidate for SecDef, seems to agree. We'll keep a close eye on this as Obama assembles the new administration.

In late January, shortly after the Iowa caucuses, I found myself at a conference, sitting next to a flag-level officer. He was an unapologetic Christian conservative -- sent his kid to Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, saw the fight against terror as a religious war. So he was not exactly inclined to say nice things about a Democrat running for president. Yet here the officer was, praising Obama. You see, this officer oversaw special operations work around the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. Sensitive stuff, that requires delicate negotiations. And already, just as one among many candidates for president, Obama was making this officer's job easier. Officials in other governments were more willing to provide his troops access to their countries. Foreign intelligence services were more willing to share information. One of the themes of this conference was information operations, or "IO" - how the U.S. can influence others around the world. This officer and other conference-goers were disgusted, by how badly the U.S. had bungled this war of ideas, and allowed opinions about America to sink so low. Candidate Obama, the group concluded, was the best IO campaign America had had in years. Allies were more ready to listen. Enemies' narratives about America were being undercut. So what happens to our standing in the world, now that the candidate is President-elect? Obviously, negative views about America aren't going to change overnight - if they change at all. For instance, some of the instant reactions from the electronic version of the Arab "street" seem decidedly undecided about a president with the middle name Hussein. But judging from the giddy reactions from Kabul to Caracas, America's most powerful IO campaign gets even stronger, when Barack Obama moves from the campaign trail to the White House.

For seven years and nearly nine months, he has signed virtually every memo or order or piece of legislation imaginable. He even vetoed a few bills, but the directive he put his name on Thursday was one that few talk very much about. Basically, it's the executive order that turns the keys to the White House over to whomever is elected president on Nov. 4.
A little publicized truth is that Washington can't wait until inauguration day next Jan. 20 to figure out the details of a transition to a new presidency. Both Barack Obama and John McCain already have designated officials to oversee such a transition once the outcome of the election is known. The transition team of the winning candidate will set up procedures for selecting key personnel and making policy decisions in the 11 weeks between the new president takes office.
Congress has appropriated $8 million to finance transition operations.
White House press secretary Dana Perino said Bush's order was designed to help coordinate efforts already under way to ensure a seamless transition. She said Bush wants to make sure the next president's team has everything it needs to hit the ground running.
"This is especially important as our nation is fighting a war, dealing with a financial crisis and working to protect ourselves from future terrorist attacks," Perino said.
"The council shall assist the major party candidates and the president-elect by making every reasonable effort to facilitate the transition between administrations," Bush's order said.

At that moment, and many others throughout the campaign I saw Obama for who he was, just another frightened politician who when given a moment to show his true colors exposed himself to be yellow. I’m tired of these leaders, Democrat and Republican. They play on real people’s hopes and fears and use them for their own political ambition.
Obama has caught the moment, he’ll win tomorrow, probably by a landslide. Our hope for a great leader, I guess, is once again out-shined by the reality of “good-enough.” President Obama will continue the war in Afghanistan, continue NAFTA and CAFTA. "I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them & get in their face." Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people's faces. They seem determined to shut people up.
That's what Obama supporters, alerted by campaign e-mails, did when conservative Stanley Kurtz appeared on Milt Rosenberg's WGN radio program in Chicago. Mr. Kurtz had been researching Mr. Obama's relationship with unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers in Chicago Annenberg Challenge papers in the Richard J. Daley Library in Chicago - papers that were closed off to him for some days, apparently at the behest of Obama supporters.
Other Obama supporters have threatened critics with criminal prosecution. In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Mr. Obama that were "false." I had been under the impression that the Alien and Sedition Acts had gone out of existence in 1801-'02. Not so, apparently, in metropolitan St. Louis. Similarly, the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Mr. Obama's ties to Mr. Ayers.
These attempts to shut down political speech have become routine for liberals. Congressional Democrats sought to reimpose the "fairness doctrine" on broadcasters, which until it was repealed in the 1980s required equal time for different points of view. The motive was plain: to shut down the one conservative-leaning communications medium, talk radio. Liberal talk-show hosts have mostly failed to draw audiences, and many liberals can't abide having citizens hear contrary views.
To their credit, some liberal old-timers - like House Appropriations Chairman David Obey - voted against the "fairness doctrine," in line with their longstanding support of free speech. But you can expect the "fairness doctrine" to get another vote if Barack Obama wins and Democrats increase their congressional majorities.
Corporate liberals have done their share in shutting down anti-liberal speech, too. "Saturday Night Live" ran a spoof of the financial crisis that skewered Democrats like House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank and liberal contributors Herbert and Marion Sandler, who sold toxic-waste-filled Golden West to Wachovia Bank for $24 billion. Kind of surprising, but not for long. The tape of the broadcast disappeared from NBC's Web site and was replaced with another that omitted the references to Mr. Frank and the Sandlers. Evidently NBC and its parent, General Electric, don't want people to hear speech that attacks liberals.
Then there's the Democrats' "card check" legislation that would abolish secret ballot elections in determining whether employees are represented by unions. The unions' strategy is obvious: Send a few thugs over to employees' homes - we know where you live - and get them to sign cards that will trigger a union victory without giving employers a chance to be heard.
Once upon a time, liberals prided themselves, with considerable reason, as the staunchest defenders of free speech. Union organizers in the 1930s and 1940s made the case that they should have access to employees to speak freely to them, and union leaders like George Meany and Walter Reuther were ardent defenders of the First Amendment.
Today's liberals seem to be taking their marching orders from other quarters. Specifically, from the college and university campuses where administrators, armed with speech codes, have for years been disciplining and subjecting to sensitivity training any students who dare to utter thoughts that liberals find offensive. The campuses that once prided themselves as zones of free expression are now the least free part of our society.
Obama supporters who found the campuses congenial and Mr. Obama himself, who has chosen to live all his adult life in university communities, seem to find it entirely natural to suppress speech they don't like and seem utterly oblivious to claims this violates the letter and spirit of the First Amendment. In this campaign, we have seen the coming of the Obama thugocracy, suppressing free speech, and we may see its flourishing in the four or eight years ahead.

from afp: The United States is planning to replace its color-coded terror alert system drafted in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks with detailed threat advisories, media reported Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has drafted a proposal sent to the White House to end its five-colored system - mocked by critics as a relic of post-9/11 frenzy that caused alarm without explaining the reasons for the alerts. Instead, it will provide more clarity and guidance in specific alerts, according to the reports. "The goal is to replace a system that communicates nothing with a system that communicates precise, actionable information based on the latest intelligence," a senior Homeland Security official told The Washington Post and The New York Times.

from mcclatchy: Kentucky Emergency Management officials are getting Kentuckians another source of prepared meals after the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that some meal kits might contain contaminated peanut butter. The FEMA meal kits were distributed to storm victims in Kentucky during the past week. The kits might contain peanut butter that is part of a national recall because of salmonella. The kits are manufactured by Red Cloud Food Services Inc. under the Standing Rock label. The only portion of the meals that might pose a danger is a packet of peanut butter, according to FEMA. The peanut butter packet should be thrown away, officials said. Beshear announced Thursday that the Kentucky officials are contracting with a private food vendor to secure hundreds of thousands of prepared meals. They also are handing out fliers shelters and distribution centers about the problem.
from natural news: The FDA has adopted new rules allowing companies to sell genetically modified animals and their products on the market, and affirming that the DNA of such animals is private property that can be held under patent. To be approved, any genetically modified animal product must be proven to the FDA's satisfaction to be safe for human use in a process similar to that undergone by new drugs. Clinical trials like those needed for drugs will not be required, however. The FDA must also show that any genetically modified animal is healthy. No FDA approval will be required for cloned animals or those intended only for research or as pets.

from danger room: As the ballots were cast yesterday, Jim Garamone of American Forces Press Service reported that Pentagon officials were already making room for the president-elect's transition team. This is the first wartime transition of power since the Vietnam War, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has created a task force to ensure a smooth transition. Among other things, Garamone reports that Gates was surveying top political appointees within the building to see who might be willing to stick around until their successors can take over. He quotes Pentagon flack Bryan Whitman as saying: “There are a number of people that have given an indication that if they were asked to stay on and serve as a bridge after Jan. 20 until their replacement is on board, they would do so.” The Washington Post adds that Obama's advisers are now "debating whether to ask Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to stay on, to allow planning for a withdrawal from Iraq to begin as soon as possible." Keeping Gates on might be a common-sense move. As Noah wrote here back in June: "[S]ince Gates has been brought in, things have started to turn. Budgets have begun to return to reality. People lose their jobs when they can't do them right. Experts in their fields are being heard. Sound policy is often trumping adherence to political orthodoxy. And the Pentagon is slowly, slowly starting to focus on today's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq." Former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, one of Obama's top national security advisers and another possible candidate for SecDef, seems to agree. We'll keep a close eye on this as Obama assembles the new administration.

Madelyn Dunham, 85, had been gravely ill for weeks, prompting Obama to interrupt his campaign for a few days last month to visit her in Honolulu, Hawaii. 'She was the cornerstone of our family and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength and humility,' read a statement from Obama and his half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. 'Our debt to her is beyond measure.' The news of Dunham's passing comes just one day before the US presidential election, which has Obama holding a significant lead over Republican rival John McCain.
from wikinews: Wikinews recently published an article which explained that NorthComm, through an Executive Order of the President of the United States, directed the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team to return to the United States from active duty missions in Iraq to begin training in a new role. NorthComm says that these troops will be used to protect the United States from threats within the United States, as well as to provide a support role to local and state agencies during times of emergency, such as with Hurricane Katrina.
