from ap: The Walt Disney Co. is buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing such characters as Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E. Under the deal, which was announced Monday and is expected to close by the end of the year, Disney will acquire the rights to 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee. Disney CEO Robert Iger said Marvel's comic books, TV shows, movies and video games amounted to "a treasure trove of content." Iger said the deal would bring benefits like the ones Disney got from buying "Toy Story" creator Pixar Animation Studios Inc. for $7.4 billion in stock in 2006. "The acquisition of Marvel offers us a similar opportunity to advance our strategy," Iger said, and "to build a business that is stronger than the sum of its parts."
from bloomberg: Barry Diller, chairman and chief executive officer of IAC/InterActiveCorp, said Web users will have to pay for what they watch and use, joining the refrain of media moguls who say an era of free Internet content is ending. The media and technology executive, whose company runs the Ask.com search engine and the Match.com dating service, said it’s “mythology” to view the Internet as a system of free communications. “It is not free, and is not going to be,” Diller said today at the Fortune Brainstorm conference in Pasadena, California. In addition to IAC, he is chairman of Expedia Inc., the online travel service, and Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc. Diller, 67, joined a group of media chiefs, from Liberty Media Corp.’s John Malone to Walt Disney Co. CEO Robert Iger, who are challenging the accepted model that consumers pay for Internet access and then content is free. Diller predicted there will be three revenue streams: advertising, subscriptions and transactions. Disney, the world’s biggest media company, is developing a subscription-based product for the Internet, Iger said on July 22 at the conference. The Burbank, California-based company has opportunities to increase sales from the Web, Iger said. Online advertising can be improved, and marketers can target consumers by tracking their activities and interests. Subscription products are particularly promising to the company.
bilderberg fears losing control in chaos-plagued world from paul joseph watson: Investigative journalist Daniel Estulin, whose information from inside Bilderberg has routinely proven accurate, states that the global elite’s plan to completely destroy the economy and ultimately lower global population by two thirds has stoked fears even within Bilderberg itself that the fallout from such chaos could ultimately result in the globalists losing their control over the world. In a telephone interview, Estulin re-iterated his original points about Bilderberg’s 2009 agenda, which were released in a pre-meeting booklet to members. These include the notion that investors, whipped up into a false state of euphoria by the belief that the economy is recovering, are being suckered into ploughing their money back into the system as a set up for “massive losses and searing financial pain in the months ahead” as the stock market reverses its uptrend and plummets to new lows.
stop bilderberg's nightmare future at all costs from paul joseph watson: London Guardian journalist Charlie Skelton, who began his coverage of the 2009 Bilderberg conference in a jovial and mocking manner, is now warning that the horrendous treatment dished out to him by both police and undercover spies is just a taste of what we can expect in our daily lives if we allow Bilderberg’s agenda, and specifically ID cards and implantable microchips, to be implemented. Initially setting out to cover the event in a satirical way, Skelton left Greece yesterday chilled to the bone about how he had been harassed, detained and stalked for days on end by authorities merely for taking photographs of the hotel where Bilderberg members were staying. “My experience over the last several days in Greece has granted me a single, diamond-hard opinion,” writes Skelton, “That we must fight, fight, fight, now – right now, this second, with every cubic inch of our souls – to stop identity cards.”
update: abc news reports on secret meeting of the rich,
yet ignores the bilderberg group completely from paul joseph watson: ABC News today [may20] devoted a prominently featured three page story to a “secret meeting” of rich philanthropists which took place earlier this month in New York, and yet one of the biggest news corporations in America was completely silent during a far more important meeting of around 150 of the world’s powerbrokers at the Bilderberg conference last week. At time of press, the ABC News story is the second top story on the ABCNews.com website under the headline, America’s Richest Givers’ Secret Meeting. “Under a cloak of secrecy, some of the world’s wealthiest people gathered in an unprecedented meeting early this month in New York City possibly to coordinate strategies for giving their vast fortunes to charity in the midst of the financial crisis,” begins the report, before descending into a deluge of fawning idolatry about how people like David Rockefeller, Bill Gates and Ted Turner, who has repeatedly called for world population to be reduced by a shocking 95% as well as a one child policy instituted in the west, are committed to saving the poor from the ravages of the economic crisis with their benign acts of philanthropy. The report states that the meeting is “enough to spark the imaginations of conspiracy theorists everywhere,” linking to a previous ABC News report that implies people who believe that powerful individuals conspire to rule the world in secret are probably mentally ill. The most vomit inducing paragraph of the whole article arrives when ABC asks, “There remain as many questions about the meeting’s details as there are about the logistics behind its organization. How did some of the world’s most public figures coordinate their schedules, travel, and security with no one in media knowing about it?” Well how indeed did they manage to do that I wonder? 150+ of the global elite manage to do it on a routine basis every single year without barely a whimper from the corporate media, despite the location of the Bilderberg meeting leaking in advance every time. They manage to do it because the corporate media was castrated decades ago and is merely a PR machine for the establishment, which is why they dutifully follow orders not to report on what would otherwise be a gargantuan story of worldwide interest in the form of the secret Bilderberg Group meetings. ABC News is owned by the Walt Disney Company, Vice Chairman of which is Roy Disney, nephew of Walt Disney himself. Roy Disney is a Bilderberg member, having attended the secretive cabal’s 1999 conference in Sintra, Portugal.
from kurt nimmo: It’s that time again, time to pay the bankers what is owed at gunpoint. Back in the day, when fear of the IRS was not as prevalent as it is today, the government employed Hollywood propaganda to make the plebs feel good about forking over their hard-won earnings. In the cartoon here, produced in 1943 during the Second World War, Donald Duck is pressed into service to make Americans feel good about paying taxes. Donald’s cartoon was rolled out the same year Milton Friedman, a Treasury Department economist at the time, came up with the idea of imposing a withholding tax.
Hollywood no longer needs to make cartoons to convince us paying taxes to international bankers is the “patriotic” thing to do. Millions of people accept this federally enforced fleecing operation with a mixture of resignation and fear. In fact, decades of propaganda have reduced many Americans to the point where they believe forking over a huge share of their earnings is a positive thing. Of course, they have no idea the money is going to the bankers. Just less than half of U.S. residents asked say the amount of federal income taxes they pay is 'about right,' a Gallup Poll reported on April 8, according to United Press International. Donald Duck’s services are no longer required.
new commander-in-chief sworn in from ap: Stepping into history, Barack Hussein Obama grasped the reins of power as America's first black president on Tuesday, saying the nation must choose "hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord" to overcome the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. In frigid temperatures, an exuberant crowd of more than a million packed the National Mall and parade route to celebrate Obama's inauguration in a high-noon ceremony. They filled the National Mall, stretching from the inaugural platform at the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial in the distance. With 11 million Americans out of work and trillions of dollars lost in the stock market's tumble, Obama emphasized that his biggest challenge is to repair the tattered economy left behind by outgoing President George W. Bush.
as security envelopes capital, def sec robert gates hides out in a 'continuity of government' scheme as 'designated successor' from danger room: As the crowds descend on the National Mall to hear President-elect Barack Obama take the oath of office, security in Washington is tighter than ever. Over 10,000 National Guard troops are on duty, part of a task force orchestrated by the Secret Service that includes uniformed police, plainclothes officers and representatives of dozens of government agencies... Perhaps the most important security precaution, however, is being taken by the Pentagon. As part of a "continuity of government" scheme, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will go to an undisclosed location, where he will ride out the inaugural festivities as Obama's designated successor in the event of some catastrophe. The White House announced the plan on Monday; Pentagon spokesman told Agence France-Presse that Gates "will be spending the day at a military installation outside the national capital region."
inaugural inanity from lew rockwell: Ten thousand National Guardsmen, 7,500 active-duty soldiers, 25,000 cops from "99 federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies." A city "honeycombed" with "communication command centers"spying on supposedly free Americans with 5,265 surveillance cameras. And, as if we aren’t already up to our eyeballs in goons, an entire brigade of the US Army on call. The cost for this hyperbolic hysteria? Hundreds of millions at a time when many taxpayers can’t scrape together the next month’s mortgage. All for an inauguration that has attracted no "specific threats." 'Critics' contend that this is overkill. Go figure... You can say this for the TSA and the millions of Americans cheering an emperor who has no clothes: they certainly deserve one another.
'goodbye bush': chant in crowded washington metro from dpa: Washington thrummed with excitement Tuesday morning as tens of thousands crowded into subway cars and poured through the streets to celebrate the end of one era and the beginning of another. In just four hours, Barack Obama will take the reins of US power from George W Bush, and Metro riders at L'Enfant Plaza, stalled by train problems, began to sing. 'Goodbye Bush, Goodbye Bush,' over and over and over they chanted. The mood was as much an outpouring of support for the country's first African-American president as it was a celebration of the Republican president's departure after eight increasingly unpopular years in the White House.
cheney finally wheeled away from raw story: Outgoing Vice President Dick Cheney will attend President-elect Obama's inauguration in a wheel chair, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said on Monday. Cheney was moving boxes into his new residence in McLean, Va., when he pulled a muscle in his back. Cheney's doctor said he will need to travel by wheelchair for several days, according to a published report.
how obama is wooing the military from time: Amid all the pomp and solemnity surrounding his arrival in Washington, Barack Obama found time to perform a couple of quiet salutes to an important constituency. On Sunday morning, he and Vice President–elect Joe Biden placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. On Monday morning, the President-elect slipped over to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for an unannounced visit with troops wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. Much of the country may have missed those brief visits, but the men and women of the U.S. military didn't... And so, as far as the courtship is going, Obama is getting a solid salute back from the rank and file.
youtube accounts of scientology critics suspended from wikinews: Two well-known critics of Scientology have had their user accounts on the video sharing website YouTube suspended. The YouTube accounts of both Tory Christman and Mark Bunker were suspended this week. In a statement to Wikinews , YouTube explained why accounts are suspended, but did not specifically state why these particular accounts were suspended. Neither Christman nor Bunker received a notice or explanation from YouTube as to why their accounts were suspended.
from reuters: Mexico's top electoral body ordered broadcasters to stop running a controversial TV ad on Monday that compares a firebrand leftist leading a siege of Congress to dictators Hitler and Pinochet. The TV ad, funded by a Mexican businessman angry at a blockade of Congress by opposition lawmakers trying to derail an oil reform plan, says the antics of protest leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador are endangering democracy. "The complaints committee decided unanimously to order the withdrawal of the spot from today," a spokesman for the Federal Electoral Institute told Reuters.
jimmy justice: getting even with the law
from wikinews: A civilian known as 'Jimmy Justice' who resides in New York City (NYC), New York, the largest city in the United States, has been videotaping NYC police officers and city workers, breaking the law while on the job. Since 2007, he claims to have caught "hundreds of officers and other city employees violating the law," and says he has them all on camera. He has posted his best confrontations with them to the video sharing website YouTube.
With the sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," in theaters, the archives is jumping on the movie's premise that documents and history go hand in hand with mystery and adventure.
"We don't have special effects, but we have real treasures here," says Katie Wilmes, coordinator of public programs at the National Archives. "Those treasures belong to the people."
The "Book of Secrets" opens with Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) learning about a page missing from the diary of John Wilkes Booth. Gates' great-great-grandfather is implicated suddenly as a key conspirator in Abraham Lincoln's death. Determined to prove his ancestor's innocence, Gates follows a chain of clues to Europe.
from ap: Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton liquidated the contents of their blind trust upon learning it contained investments of $5 million to $25 million that could pose conflicts of interest or prove to be embarrassing to her presidential campaign.
The blind trust and a bank account valued in the same range place the Clinton's total wealth at between $10 million and $50 million.
The Clintons had to disclose the contents of the blind trust in April under instructions from the Office of Government Ethics and sold the assets in May, according to a disclosure form filed Friday. The Clintons have had a blind trust continuously since 1993 and had no control over its transactions.
Over time, the Clintons' blind trust grew significantly and included stock holdings in oil and drug companies, military contractors and Wal-Mart...
from democratic underground/cbs4: Many New Jersey residents watching the Disney Channel Tuesday morning were outraged after the family-friendly programming turned into a pornographic display.
Jennie Sherman still can't believe what happened while she was watching the show "Handy Manny" with her two twin sons.
"We were just sitting here and the screen just froze and then all of a sudden I saw very graphic pornography on the television and I scrambled to get the remote to shut it off," Sherman told WCBS-TV in New York City.
Sherman said she immediately recorded the X-rated graphic video on her DVR. She then e-mailed wcbstv.com to report the shocking news.
"Basically because I said my husband is not going to believe this," she said. "I was in shock, I pressed record and shut the television off."
Comcast spokesman Fred De'Andrea issued a statement regarding the incident:
At around 9:30 Tuesday morning we had an isolated issue in a local New Jersey Facility. We immediately detected the issue and it was corrected promptly...We apologize to any customer who experienced an issue this morning. We are continuing to investigate the root cause of the incident.
Comcast officials also point out this had nothing to do with the Disney Channel.
"If I was in the kitchen and not with them and this had happened, I would hit the roof I think," Sherman said.
Sherman said she contacted customer service at Comcast and they couldn't tell her if others had complained but they did credit her for a month but she said she is still afraid of turning on her television.
"I am definitely worried to put the Disney Channel on again (or) Comcast again," Sherman said.
