Expanded Role Proposed for 'Elite' Military Forces

from nytimes.com: As the United States turns increasingly to Special Operations forces to confront developing threats scattered around the world, the nation’s top Special Operations officer, a member of the Navy Seals who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, is seeking new authority to move his forces faster and outside of normal Pentagon deployment channels.

The officer, Adm. William H. McRaven, who leads the Special Operations Command, is pushing for a larger role for his elite units who have traditionally operated in the dark corners of American foreign policy. The plan would give him more autonomy to position his forces and their war-fighting equipment where intelligence and global events indicate they are most needed.

It would also allow the Special Operations forces to expand their presence in regions where they have not operated in large numbers for the past decade, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

While President Obama and his Pentagon’s leadership have increasingly made Special Operations forces their military tool of choice, similar plans in the past have foundered because of opposition from regional commanders and the State Department. The military’s regional combatant commanders have feared a decrease of their authority, and some ambassadors in crisis zones have voiced concerns that commandos may carry out missions that are perceived to tread on a host country’s sovereignty, like the rift in ties with Pakistan after the Bin Laden raid.

from bbc: Libya's ex-leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on his birthplace of Sirte, officials say. The circumstances of his death are not yet clear. Video has emerged purporting to show Col Gaddafi being captured alive and bundled on to a truck. Fighters loyal to the National Transitional Council (NTC) said they found him hiding in a hole, and shot him when he tried to escape. Col Gaddafi was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The NTC now plans to officially announce Libya's "liberation" before indicating the next steps towards democratic elections. After a day of conflicting reports and rumours, the NTC's acting prime minister Mahmoud Jibril told a news conference: "We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed."

from cba/ap: Florida officials are abuzz as to how millions of honey bees were killed in Brevard County. Several beekeepers in the county have reported lost colonies this week. Charles Smith of Smith Family Honey Company told Stuart News Thursday he lost 400 beehives. He says the bees appeared to have been poisoned. “I’ll never get completely compensated for this unless someone handed me 400 beehives,” Smith told Stuart News. “I lost the bees, the ability to make honey and the ability to sell the bees.” Smith told Florida Today that he lost $150,000 from the incident. State officials are testing the bees to determine what type of chemicals contributed to their deaths. Experts say pesticides might be behind the lost beehives. “The fact that it was so widespread and so rapid, I think you can pretty much rule out disease,” Bill Kern, an entomologist with the University of Florida’s Research and Education Center, told Florida Today. “It happened essentially almost in one day. Usually diseases affect adults or the brood, you don’t have something that kills them both.” The case in Micco, 18 miles south of Melbourne, is being investigated by state agriculture officials and the sheriff’s office.

afghan insurgents obtained US ied-blocking systems

from allgov: Warlocks, the jamming technology used by the U.S. military to thwart roadside bombs in Afghanistan, fell into the hands of the Taliban more than two years ago, according to an Army intelligence document obtained by WikiLeaks. The equipment may have been subsequently shipped to Iran where researchers tried to figure out how Warlocks works by using reverse engineering.

Warlocks is designed to scramble signals such as those sent from cell phones to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have been a leading cause of death and injuries for American soldiers.

It is unknown whether the capture of the anti-IED system resulted in the Taliban overcoming the jamming technology. Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists, said it’s possible the Army developed a new system to replace the Warlocks that may have been compromised. “Nothing ever stands still. The Army is always upgrading, creating newer measures to deal with new threats,” Aftergood told NextGov.

from nytimes: President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras was ousted by the army on Sunday, capping months of tensions over his efforts to lift presidential term limits. In the first military coup in Central America since the end of the cold war, soldiers stormed the presidential palace in the capital, Tegucigalpa, early in the morning, disarming the presidential guard, waking Mr. Zelaya and putting him on a plane to Costa Rica. Mr. Zelaya, a leftist aligned with President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, angrily denounced the coup as illegal. “I am the president of Honduras,” he insisted at the airport in San José, Costa Rica, still wearing his pajamas. Later Sunday the Honduran Congress voted him out of office, replacing him with the president of Congress, Roberto Micheletti. The military offered no public explanation for its actions, but the Supreme Court issued a statement saying that the military had acted to defend the law against “those who had publicly spoken out and acted against the Constitution’s provisions.”

from southern studies: At least two leaders of the coup launched in Honduras today were apparently trained at a controversial Department of Defense school based at Fort Benning, Georgia infamous for producing graduates linked to torture, death squads and other human rights abuses. Leftist President Manuel Zelaya was kidnapped and transported to Costa Rica this morning after a growing controversy over a vote concerning term limits. Over the last week, Zelaya clashed with and eventually dismissed General Romeo Vasquez - who is now reportedly in charge of the armed forces that abducted the Honduran president. According to the watchdog group School of Americas Watch, Gen. Vasquez trained at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation at least twice - in 1976 and 1984 - when it was still called School of Americas. The Georgia-based U.S. military school is infamous for training over 60,000 Latin American soldiers, including infamous dictators, "death squad" leaders and others charged with torture and other human rights abuses. SOA Watch's annual protest to shut down the Fort Benning training site draws thousands.

from kurt nimmo: Ignore the neocons who whine that Obama and the Democrats are not doing enough to support the protesters arrayed in opposition to recently re-elected Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the mullahs in Iran. “The Obama administration is moving forward with plans to fund groups that support Iranian dissidents,” reports USA Today. “The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which reports to the secretary of state, has for the last year been soliciting applications for $20 million in grants to ‘promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Iran,’ according to documents on the agency’s website. The final deadline for grant applications is June 30.” Or put another way, the CIA will fund the opposition and this effort will be run out of Hillary Clinton’s State Department. Public records show that USAID has long been a front for CIA intelligence gathering, as well as a conduit for CIA funding to foreign governments and agencies, according to Bill Keisling. Pages 607 to 613 of the so-called CIA Family Jewels document describes a “joint CIA/USAID training program.” Andrew Natsios, USAID’s former head, stated unequivocally in a widely distributed 2003 speech that even foreign USAID-funded contractors and NGOs “are an arm of the U.S. government.” And the role of the much smaller NED was made clear when Allen Weinstein, one of its founders stated in a 1991 Washington Post article that, “a lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.” It is well documented that the CIA’s USAID, along with the Pentagon, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and the Venezuelan mafia in Miami attempted to overthrow Hugo Chávez. “It has been affirmed that the coup against Chávez was CIA-made,” writes Jean-Guy Allard of Granma International. “The CIA and the State Department maintain various fronts in the country, as they always do.”

from clyde lewis: In this Ground Zero Lounge, Clyde Lewis asks his audience to think about the similarities between Pirates and a government that uses disproportionate force to destabilize a country. The recent “we’ll see” attitude towards prosecuting agents of torture from the Obama administration and the policies of “extreme force” towards poor an desperate Somalian pirates is disproportionate. This sets a precedent for the highest hypocrisy.

Almost from out of nowhere this spate of Pirate attacks are gaining the attention of the American media. The Obama administration is grandstanding on its intervention in Somalian waters, However the administration is lacking vision into the bigger picture. The people that get the mainstream narrative in the United States are not getting the whole story either. The reality is that this adulation of the violent policing of “piracy” is an embarrassment for us as a country and a complete exercise in hypocrisy on the part of the Obama administration. This Piracy incident underscores how haphazardly the foreign policy of the United States has not changed and unfortunately we see that policies of “shoot first ask questions later” are put into practice.

The so- called “pirates” propaganda is being used as a smokescreen to invade, destabilize, and control the Horn of Africa. The Pirates are the pretext to justify all means of military invasion in Somalia that could eventually lead to military invasion/intervention in the horn of Africa. The so-called pirates crisis is a struggle between China, America and the West to control the strategic waterways in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Somalia's strategic position in the Horn of Africa means that any nation that dominates this area will have tremendous control over world trade. The even darker story behind the piracy takes into account CIA transitional puppet governments, illegal dumping in coastal waters and the Toxic aftermath. While piracy is an abhorrent practice, the half truth of Somalian “piracy” is equally despicable. This Ground Zero Lounge will lead you to a remarkable conclusion that twists its direction into the tragedy of ecological disaster on planet earth far more destructive than Global Warming.

The idea is a logical next step following the signing last Friday of a treaty creating a Union of South American States that aims to promote joint regional customs and defense policies, Lula said during his weekly radio broadcast. “Many things still haven’t been realised. We are now going to create a Bank of South America. We are going to move forward so in the future we’ll have a single central bank, a common currency,” he said. But, he added: “This is a process. It won’t be something that happens quickly.”

from steve watson: A report from Merrill Lynch & Co has revealed that the government has effectively given Gulf Arab oil producers the go ahead to change their dollar-pegged foreign exchange policies, a move some experts fear will lead to a large scale abandonment of the greenback. In a report entitled "U.S. Green Light for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)", the U.S. investment bank said the United Arab Emirates and Qatar will probably move to a currency basket in the next few months, with their respective currencies appreciating 5 percent before the end of the year, reports Reuters.
