US secretly backing syrian opposition since 2006

US fears syrian reprisals after wikileaks disclosure
US secretly backing syrian opposition since 2006from reuters: The State Department has secretly funded Syrian opposition groups, according to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

The cables show that the State Department has funneled as much as $6 million since 2006 to a group of Syrian exiles to operate a London-based satellite channel, Barada TV, and finance activities inside Syria, the Post said.

Barada TV began broadcasting in April 2009 but has ramped up operations to cover the mass protests in Syria that began last month as part of a long-standing campaign to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad the Post said.

The U.S. money for Syrian opposition figures began flowing under President George W. Bush after political ties with Damascus were frozen in 2005, the newspaper said.

The financial backing has continued under President Barack Obama, even as his administration sought to rebuild relations with Assad, the Post said. In January, the White House posted an ambassador to Damascus for the first time in six years.

The article said it is unclear whether the United States was still funding Syrian opposition groups, but the cables indicate money was set aside at least through September 2010.

hillary holds first-ever mass meeting of US ambassadors

hillary holds first-ever mass meeting of US ambassadorsfrom politico: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called top envoys from U.S. embassies to gather in Washington on Monday (feb1) for a wide-ranging foreign policy meeting. Ambassadors from almost all 260 U.S. embassies, consulates and other posts in more than 180 countries are expected to convene at the State Department for what’s being billed as the first meeting of its kind. Officials say the meeting will include discussion of foreign policy priorities for 2011, The Associated Press reported, as well as an assessment of the fallout from the release of secret diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks. Clinton will meet individually with diplomats working in unstable countries...

The ambassadors will also hear from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen on civilian-military operations in the 21st century, and USAID chief Raj Shah will speak on results-based development. New Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Budget Thomas Nides will discuss the budget for 2011 and beyond. But on that point, one official questioned why “every ambassador in the world was required to come back to the States for a group of lectures when this could have been done virtually,” noting that almost every ambassador flies business class, so costs could quickly add up. The diplomatic powwow wraps up Friday (feb4), when the ambassadors fly back to their missions.

fbi hunts the 9/11 gang that got away

wikileaks bombshell points to 9/11 stand down
fbi hunts the 9/11 gang that got awayfrom telegraph: The FBI has launched a manhunt for a previously unknown team of men suspected to be part of the 9/11 attacks, the Daily Telegraph can disclose... Secret documents reveal that the three Qatari men conducted surveillance on the targets, provided “support” to the plotters and had tickets for a flight to Washington on the eve of the atrocities... The details of the secret 9/11 team have emerged in a secret American government document obtained by the Wikileaks website and passed to The Daily Telegraph. It was sent between the American Embassy in Doha and the Department for Homeland Security in Washington.

for hollywood, it was a tough 2010 as spending continued to fall

for hollywood, it was a tough 2010 as spending continued to fallfrom latimes: To paraphrase Apollo 13 astronaut Jack Swigert, "Hollywood, we have a problem." The industry that was supposed to be immune to economic downturns looks like it's going to have some re-entry problems as the economy begins to recover. Broad swaths of the entertainment business declined in 2010. DVD sales were off 13%. Music CD purchases plummeted 19%. Video game sales as well as concert and theater attendance also fell. Even the turnout for America's favorite pastimes — baseball and NASCAR — was down. And swift changes in technology will make it difficult for Hollywood to capture pre-recession levels of revenue. So much for the value of escapism. But perhaps most ominously, last summer the pay-television industry suffered an unprecedented net loss - for the first time - of customers, a yellow warning light that consumers may no longer regard cable TV as a must-have utility on par with electricity and phone service.
