Manson Photo Shows 'Helter Skelter' Cult Leader at 77

from cbsnews.com: New photos have been released of Charles Manson, the leader of the "Manson Family" cult responsible for a series of brutal murders in California in 1969. The release of the new photos come a week before his parole hearing. At the request of CNN, the California Department of Corrections released two photos reportedly taken in June 2011 at the state prison in Corcoran, Calif. A department of corrections spokesperson says the new photos were taken due to a change in Manson's appearance, CNN reports. Manson originally received a death sentence in the infamous murder of actress Sharon Tate and six others by a group of his followers. But his death sentence was changed to life in prison after California's death penalty was overturned for a period during the 1970s. Manson, whose parole hearing is schedule for April 11, has been denied parole 11 times, CNN reports.

from ap: The Charles Manson follower convicted of attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford is set to be released from a Texas federal prison later this month after serving more than 30 years behind bars. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was a 26-year-old disciple of the cult murderer Manson when she aimed a semiautomatic pistol at Ford in September 1975 in Sacramento, Calif. A Secret Service agent grabbed her and Ford was unhurt. The Federal Bureau of Prisons and the court-appointed attorney who represented Fromme at trial say the now 60-year-old is to be released from the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, TX on Aug. 16.

from latimes: The leader of the Church of Scientology struck subordinates numerous times and set an example for physical violence among the tightly controlled religion's management team, four former high-ranking executives told a newspaper for a story published Sunday.

The executives, who have since left the organization, told the St. Petersburg Times that they witnessed David Miscavige, chairman of the board that oversees the church, hit staff members dozens of times. "It was random and whimsical. It could be the look on your face. Or not answering a question quickly. But it always was a punishment," said Mike Rinder, who oversaw the church's legal and media relations operations. Rinder said that he was struck many times by Miscavige and that he also hit others before leaving in 2007.

In a response to the paper, the church denied the allegations, saying that the four former executives' statements were "absolute and total lies." It called the claims an effort to tarnish Miscavige, who has led the church for more than two decades. A spokesman said Sunday that the church had provided documentation that the claims were false...

Sunday's report was the first of a three-part series on the church.

The Los Angeles-based Church of Scientology, founded in 1954 by the late science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, teaches that technology can expand the mind and help solve problems. It claims 10 million members worldwide, including celebrities Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

Law enforcement officials were searching for evidence that minors had been videotaped performing sexual activities or had been molested. The Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Alamo's property for child pornography. Alamo, who claims he is legally blind and wouldn't be able to see child pornography, preaches that girls should marry young and sex with post-puberty girls is 'okay' because "in the Bible it happened".

from metro: More grave sites have been discovered at a ranch where mass murderer Charles Manson lived. Investigators had always feared that Manson and his band of followers - the Manson Family - may have carried out more killings. It is thought more bodies may be buried at the ranch where Manson, now 73, went into hiding after his cult's killings... One Manson Family member, Susan Atkins, is said to have told her cell mate that there were "three people out in the desert that they done in".

A team of forensic experts has returned to the site with a specially trained dog and the latest technology. The group of experts, from California State University and Tennessee's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, used a magnetometer – an instrument that can see underground... Marc Wise, an Oak Ridge researcher, said: "There's definitely something down there." The scientists want the sites to be excavated... Manson convinced his followers to carry out the murder spree. He is currently in prison and is not eligible for parole until 2012.

The group usually amuses itself by stealing passwords to downloading sites and finding ways to harass online communities that its members disdain. They were last seen on THREAT LEVEL when a Los Angeles Fox News affiliate ran a story that hilariously implied the group's arsenal included exploding vans.

The attack on Scientology, which Anonymous has dubbed Project Chanology, started in recent days, set off by the Church's most recent attempt to censor the internet by forcing sites to remove a creepy Tom Cruise Scientology video. A wiki set up for the project directs Anonymous members to download and use denial of service software, make prank calls, host Scientology documents the Church considers proprietary, and fax endless loops of black pages to the Church's fax machines to waste ink.

from press tv: German top security official, Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has accused the US-based creed of Scientology of being anti-democratic.

DPA reported Sunday that Schaeuble had agreed to step up police surveillance of the Scientology organization, which is recognized in several other countries as a church.

In an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Schaeuble said it was important to educate the public about Scientology.

But he rejected civil-liberties concerns about the surveillance.

"Scientology is working on obtaining political power and influence in Germany," he said, charging that the group was hostile to constitutional principles.

"They want to deactivate essential basic and human rights such as human dignity and the right to equal treatment," he said of the group, which is estimated to have 6,000 German members.

The creed was established by a US science-fiction writer, the late L Ron Hubbard.

The United States has repeatedly criticized Germany over the surveillance, saying it breaches freedom of religion.

from robert baer: The CIA has proved, once again, that the cover up is worse than the crime. Or at least let's hope that's the case.

CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden has admitted that in 2005 the CIA destroyed two videotapes of interrogations of al-Qaeda prisoners, including a central figure in 9/11, Abu Zubaydah...

What other evidence has the CIA destroyed? And can the CIA be trusted to tell us? The CIA had told the 9/11 Commission, when it formally requested such materials, that there was no taping of interrogations...

I would find it very difficult to believe the CIA would deliberately destroy evidence material to the 9/11 investigation, evidence that would cover up a core truth, such as who really was behind 9/11. On the other hand I have to wonder what space-time continuum the CIA exists in, if they weren't able to grasp what a field day the 9/11 conspiracy theorists are going to have with this — especially at a time when trust for the government is plumbing new depths.

I myself have felt the pull of the conspiracy theorists — who believe that 9/11 was an inside job, somehow pulled off by the U.S. government. For the record, I don't believe that the World Trade Center was brought down by our own explosives, or that a rocket, rather than an airliner, hit the Pentagon. I spent a career in the CIA trying to orchestrate plots, wasn't all that good at it, and certainly couldn't carry off 9/11. Nor could the real pros I had the pleasure to work with.

Still, the people who think 9/11 was an inside job might easily be able to believe that Abu Zubaydah named his American accomplices in the tape that has now been destroyed by the CIA...

If this sounds like paranoia, it is. But the CIA certainly is not helping by destroying evidence. And they should know better than to destroy evidence in the biggest criminal case in American history. More than anything what we need right now is complete and total transparency on 9/11.

doomsday cult refuses to leave underground bunker

from abc: Local officials and negotiators from the Russian Orthodox Church spent the weekend unsuccessfully trying to convince a group of doomsday cult members to come out of the underground bunker they have been holed up in for weeks.

The groups leader, Peter Kuznetsov, ordered followers to take refuge in the bunker last month to await the end of the world, which he said would happen in May.

Kuznetsov has been arrested and is undergoing evaluation at a psychiatric hospital.

Russian television showed part of an exchange between Kuznetsov and a hospital doctor that aired Friday.
