poverty rate rises as incomes decline

from cnnmoney: Amid a still struggling economy, more people in America fell below the poverty line last year, according to new census data released Tuesday. The nation's poverty rate rose to 15.1% in 2010, its highest level since 1993. In 2009, 14.3% of people in America were living in poverty. "The results are not surprising given the economy," said Paul Osterman, a labor economist at MIT. "You would expect with so many people unemployed, the poverty rate would go up. It's just another sign of what a difficult time this is for so many people." About 46.2 million people are now considered in poverty, 2.6 million more than last year. The government defines the poverty line as income of $22,314 a year for a family of four and $11,139 for an individual. The Office of Management and Budget updates the poverty line each year to account for inflation.

from ibtimes: A flash mob in Germantown, Maryland robbed a local 7-Eleven store in under one minute Saturday night. Surveillance footage of the incident shows a group of teenagers walking wordlessly into the convenience store. They are followed seconds later by a stream of people, presumably juveniles, many covering their faces with shirts and hoods. The group walks around the store, taking as much as possible, before leaving 40 seconds later.

Montgomery County Police believe the event was organized online, likely on Facebook. A total of 28 individuals were captured in the videotape, and investigators say they have identified about half of them. The video was posted online, and many members of the community came forward with tips.

Flash mobs aren't new, nor are they unique to Maryland. They are an increasingly frequent trend that often have severe results, and townships and police departments around the country are trying to figure out how to combat the problem.

A protest over the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man by police on Thursday that started peacefully suddenly turned violent. Several buildings, cars and a double-decker bus were set on fire before order was restored. The crowd numbering in the hundreds also broke shop windows and looted stores, pushing carts full of stolen goods down the streets of the Tottenham district of north London. Police are now patrolling the district with concern of more trouble later on Sunday. The rioting was the worst London has seen in years. Tottenham, home to a large number of ethnic minorities, has a history of racial tensions. It was the scene in 1985 of one of the most violent riots in Britain's history during which a police officer was hacked to death when Afro-Caribbean youths in a deprived housing estate of Tottenham went on a rampage.

US secretly backing syrian opposition since 2006

US fears syrian reprisals after wikileaks disclosure
from reuters: The State Department has secretly funded Syrian opposition groups, according to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

The cables show that the State Department has funneled as much as $6 million since 2006 to a group of Syrian exiles to operate a London-based satellite channel, Barada TV, and finance activities inside Syria, the Post said.

Barada TV began broadcasting in April 2009 but has ramped up operations to cover the mass protests in Syria that began last month as part of a long-standing campaign to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad the Post said.

The U.S. money for Syrian opposition figures began flowing under President George W. Bush after political ties with Damascus were frozen in 2005, the newspaper said.

The financial backing has continued under President Barack Obama, even as his administration sought to rebuild relations with Assad, the Post said. In January, the White House posted an ambassador to Damascus for the first time in six years.

The article said it is unclear whether the United States was still funding Syrian opposition groups, but the cables indicate money was set aside at least through September 2010.

Considering the media hype surrounding the fifth anniversary of 9/11, the fifth anniversary of 7/7 doesn't seem to have attracted much attention... I guess the reason they are not giving it much attention is because they don't want people to look into it. It is after all one of the the most suspicious terror attacks in recent history.

peter power reveals more details of 7/7 terror drills

from steve watson: Peter Power, the former Scotland Yard official Anti-Terrorist Branch official, who oversaw drills of the very events of the London bombings on the morning of 7/7 as they were happening, has revealed more details behind the events for the first time in three and a half years. A statement, apparently from Mr Power, has appeared in the comments section of a recent blog posting regarding comments Power made on the BBC last week.

As we highlighted, the “crisis management expert” revealed that some companies used the shut down of the city of London on Wednesday, during the G20 protests, as a dress rehearsal for an influenza pandemic.

In response to an explanation of who Peter Power is, which was added by the Uncensored Magazine blog, Mr Power himself posted a lengthy statement in which he reveals that the company he was working with on 7/7 was London based information giant Reed Elsevier.

The company is most notable for its ownership of the Lexis/Nexis legal database, as well as many other information sources. As Elsevier, it runs a vast number of science journals, including some of the biggest and most reputable ones. Reed is also known as a host of large exhibitions. The company part owns the ExCel Centre in London’s Docklands area, where the G20 summit was held this past weekend...

To re-cap the situation, on the afternoon of July 7th, 2005, Power told a BBC radio interviewer that his company was running an exercise for an unnamed group that revolved around three bombs going off at precisely the same tube stations and precisely the same time as those that were hit that morning.

from itn: Police have been ordered to release footage of the July 7 bombers after a three-year freedom of information battle. The video shows the terrorists chatting, putting on rucksacks and buying snacks on their way to carry out suicide bombings that killed 52 innocent people in London. In chilling scenes, Hasib Hussain is also seen shopping for a battery and stopping at McDonald's as he struggles to make his device work after the other bombs have been detonated. The footage was described in detail in the Home Office's Narrative report, which was published the year after the devastating 2005 attacks. But very little of the material has so far been made available to the public. The Information Commissioner overruled objections from Scotland Yard that disclosure could disrupt its investigations, and ordered that seven pieces of footage should be released. The force has 35 days to either appeal or disclose the material. Three of the bombers detonated their devices almost simultaneously at 8.50am, Lindsay under King's Cross, Mohammad Sidique Khan at Edgware Road, and Shehzad Tanweer at Aldgate. Hussain set off his bomb on a bus in Tavistock Square at 9.47am. The Commissioner ruled that the faces of anyone other than the bombers should be pixelated in the footage.

Apparently, if you wear black hoods and scarves, smash up private property and provoke police, then that’s absolutely fine and you’ll be left largely untouched. But God forbid if you’re a middle of the road anti-poverty group that just wants to peaceably march down the street. “An anti-poverty group expressed 'outrage' after its accreditation to attend Thursday’s G20 summit was suddenly withdrawn on Wednesday,” reports the Telegraph... Benedict Southworth, the group’s director, said that the decision was part of the government’s plan to “stage-manage events and prevent voices of dissent and disagreement being heard.” The black bloc anarchist assault on the Royal Bank of Scotland building yesterday certainly had an air of being stage-managed. The target was announced in advance, the authorities knew that the building was a prime target, and yet it was the only one in the street not boarded up. A cafe across the street was boarded up and yet the RBS building was left completely vulnerable to attack.

Sipping coffee after three courses and a few Marlboro Lights, they were angry that the police didn't seem to be making any arrests: "Its kicking off over in Bishopsgate", they said. "The demonstrators are goading the police and hitting them with sticks, but they are just letting them. They aren't arresting anyone." And these two wanted to see the long arm of the law carting a few protesters away – because they had a financial interest in arrests. "I'll make money if they arrest more than 140", he said. Traders, he explained were putting spread bets on the number of arrests – with the quoted spread on Bloomberg at 130-140. They were also paying out on deaths and if more than 20 demonstrators are injured by horse charges. The riots, they said, were only a minor inconvenience: "We've been in this morning, made a lot of money and now are chilling out"... You couldn't quite forget what was happening though, the constant drone of helicopters competing with the increasingly noisy bankers.

They are being questioned over claims they planned to target the meeting of the world's most powerful political leaders in London later this week. The five were held after officers found weapons, imitation weapons, suspicious devices and 'material relating to political ideology' during a house search, a police spokesman said.

The main goal is to create fear and obedience to state authorities through the use of propaganda in the aftermath of the event. The driving propaganda, after the fact, is the main payload, not the event itself. While it is possible that imbeciles will target individual executives for assassination or use improvised explosives to create work for janitors in corporate lobbies, these types of attacks are likely to be acts of state because of their utility for propaganda purposes. Think about it: Who benefits from attacks like these? The stoned white Rastafarian, soy people with Bozo the Clown wigs and Fair Trade hacky sacks will get the blame. It’s all “the terrorists,” right? War, on the other hand, targets critical infrastructure. Examples: Financial transaction clearing is shut down. Stock markets are shut down. Communications systems are damaged or destroyed. Energy distribution systems are damaged or destroyed. While it’s possible that attacks of this nature could be false flag, it’s not likely because unmanageable, cascading effects could result. So, as the situation continues to devolve, expect corporate states to try to short circuit street level activists with false flag operations and heavy follow on propaganda linking them with “the terrorists.”

The Put People First march was organised by the Rainbow Alliance of more than 100 trade unions, church groups and charities. Armed with banners and flags, demonstrators marched for several hours through the heart of London. The colorful procession ended up in Hyde Park at a peaceful afternoon rally. Tony Robinson, one of the participants, addressed the crowd: “We won’t accept the old politics – we won’t accept the old financial institutions! From now on we are going to put people first!”

from brainflation: I attended the Health Care Forum down at the Coast Guard Academy today. Overall it was about what I expected, much hot gas was released but no cogent ideas were formed. While I didn’t get the opportunity to unleash my health question trifecta on Dodd during the forum I did catch up with him afterward. I asked Mr. Dodd when Congress authorized Senator Kennedy to receive his honorary knighthood from England. He honestly enough told me that no such authorization came out of congress. When I then informed him that Senator Kennedy is in violation of Article I section 9 of the Constitution and asked when the Senate intended to remove Kennedy he had only laughter. It is clear that Senator Dodd has no interest in upholding his own oath to defend the Constitution in response to Senator Kennedy’s violation of his oath of office and the Constitution. It is obvious that we need to get rid of this clown because he has no intention of ever doing what he was elected to do, uphold the constitution. From Article I Section 9: "No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State." The private visit is due to take place at Buckingham Palace when the president visits Britain to attend the G20 London economic summit. World leaders are meeting at the G20 in London on 2 April to discuss plans to tackle the current economic crisis. The Queen's last meeting with a US president was with George Bush during his farewell European tour last June. The BBC's royal correspondent, Peter Hunt, said: "This will be a brief but striking encounter between an American president who'll have been in power for some 70 days and a British monarch who has lived through the Second World War, the Cold War and the current terrorist threat."

To the deafening roar of fireworks, Beijing marked the end of Summer Games that brought it a record bounty of 51 gold medals and seized global sports supremacy from the United States.

A little more than an hour into the ceremony, Beijing Mayor Guo Jinlong handed the Olympic flag to International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge, who immediately passed it on to Boris Johnson, London’s beaming mop-haired mayor.

Then it was London's turn.

As British Prime Minister Gordon Brown watched from the stadium gallery, British designers took over a portion of the evening ceremony, and brought with them a legendary figure in rock music history, a sporting icon and some wry British humor.

A red double-decker London bus drove into the Bird's Nest Stadium, peeling open like a blossoming flower to reveal a stage. On it was Jimmy Page, the Led Zeppelin guitarist, playing the classic "Whole Lotta Love." Moments later, David Beckham, the soccer icon, arrived to kick a soccer ball into a crowd of athletes. Beckham scored a huge ovation.

Tens of thousands of Britons watched the ceremony in live broadcasts on 30 giant screens around the British Isles, including in London's Trafalgar Square.

The drones, which are fitted with infra-red sensors and electronic eavesdropping equipment, will be able to provide a bird's eye view of the crowds across East London. The proposal has raised feared on the London Assembly that the Government is planning to turn the capital into a 'mini police state' while the Games are on.

And at least one group of federal workers is none too happy about the development. Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, or PEER, says the $600,000 stun gun buy isn't justified, when the Forest Service is struggling financially.

from huffington post: A former Goldman Sachs associate who was accused of masterminding one of the broadest insider-trading conspiracies in years was sentenced on Thursday to nearly five years in prison... Eugene Plotkin... was sentenced to four years and nine months by a federal district judge in Manhattan. The sentence was the minimum under a plea agreement. Mr. Plotkin's arrest in April 2006 was the first of a number of insider-trading cases brought by federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission that year and 2007.

10,000 cctv cameras, 80% of crime unsolved

But an analysis of the publicly funded spy network, which is owned and controlled by local authorities and Transport for London, has cast doubt on its ability to help solve crime.

A comparison of the number of cameras in each London borough with the proportion of crimes solved there found that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any...

Dee Doocey, the Lib-Dems' policing spokeswoman, said:

"These figures suggest there is no link between a high number of CCTV cameras and a better crime clear-up rate.

We have estimated that CCTV cameras have cost the taxpayer in the region of £200million in the last 10 years but it's not entirely clear if some of that money would not have been better spent on police officers.

Although CCTV has its place, it is not the only solution in preventing or detecting crime.

Too often calls for CCTV cameras come as a knee-jerk reaction. It is time we engaged in an open debate about the role of cameras in London today."
