commercial aircraft to fly in military airspace for holiday travel

norad will conduct simultaneous exercise flights to test response capability; faa works to ease delays for thanksgiving

from norad: The Federal Aviation Administration is preparing for a busy Thanksgiving holiday travel week by working with the Department of Defense to clear the way for commercial aircraft to fly in airspace normally reserved for the military.

We want to do everything we can to make it easier for people to travel so they can spend Thanksgiving with their loved ones,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “We appreciate the military’s help in making this happen.”

Air traffic controllers may begin routing commercial aircraft through the restricted airspace at 6 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Nov. 23, a day earlier than in previous years. The use of restricted airspace will end at 6 a.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 29. The busiest travel days are expected to be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.

Under the agreement, DOD will release airspace off the east coast above 24,000 feet. The added capacity is expected to ease delays during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, saving time and money for passengers and airlines while reducing fuel burn.

The FAA has developed dedicated routes off the east coast to allow airlines to plan their flights through the normally restricted airspace. Normal inland routes will still be available. Weather permitting, the combination of both sets of routes is expected to ease congestion.

The FAA is using all the tools available to try and give airlines the most efficient routes so air travelers can reach their destinations safely and on time,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.

The nation’s air traffic controllers are committed to upholding the safety of the system while working the most efficient airspace system in the world,” said NATCA President Paul Rinaldi. “Over the past year we’ve experienced a movement toward collaboration at all levels of the agency and we look forward to continuing to work together to improve air travel for the flying public.”

The DOD is also allowing commercial flights to use restricted airspace in other parts of the country. These include:

  • Airspace over the Gulf of Mexico to ease congestion for commercial aircraft flying between Florida and the Louisiana and Texas areas, as well as points beyond.
  • Airspace over Twentynine Palms in California to ease congestion for commercial aircraft flying to and from markets in Southern California.
  • Airspace over the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to allow for more direct routings for aircraft flying over the Southwest.
Air travelers interested in flight and airport status should visit www.fly.faa.gov for real-time updates.

In coming months, they plan to hold similar drills for the effort, dubbed Blue TIDE (Terrorism Identification and Deterrence Effort)... A delegation of senior Indian police officers observed Tuesday's drill. "They are very interested in the technology used in the United States to help prevent attacks," said Deputy Chief Erhart M. Olson of the Metro Transit Police.

NORAD is coordinating the mock defense maneuvers nationwide, preparing military personnel to identify and defend against domestic hostile acts such as the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The other aircraft will be flown by pilots under contract who will pose as enemy combatants. The 180th Fighter Wing will stage similar maneuvers Thursday afternoon over the Toledo and Youngstown areas.

domestic threats biggest olympic security concern
domestic threats biggest olympic security concernfrom cbc: A University of Calgary expert in modern terrorism says small disruptions by domestic groups are the most likely security threat to the upcoming 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, but organizational issues are also a critical concern. Vancouver is set to capture the world's attention for 16 days when the Olympic Winter Games begin later this month. But with that global spotlight comes some of the world's biggest problems and a heightened risk of terrorist attacks, according to Michael Zekulin, a PhD candidate researching contemporary terrorism in the U of C's political science department. "In today's world, the Olympic Games represent a very real target for terrorism. It provides groups with the potential for large casualties and immediate global attention," said Zekulin.

norad 'fabric virgo' drills aug12-13 to prep for 2010 bc olympics

norad 'fabric virgo' drills aug12-13 to prep for 2010 bc olympicsfrom defence watch: The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) will conduct Exercise Fabric Virgo this week in southwestern British Columbia in support of preparations for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

The exercise, which will be conducted in the Vancouver and Abbotsford areas August 12-13, will involve Canadian Forces CF-18 fighters and other aircraft flying at low altitudes. Residents in the exercise areas may hear aircraft noise and perhaps see aircraft flying at various times throughout the day.

NORAD maintains aircraft assets throughout North America in order to support its bi-national mission of providing aerospace defence, warning and control for North America. As the Canadian geographical component of NORAD, CANR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs all air sovereignty activities for the Canadian NORAD Region.

Training is conducted in a disciplined manner and in a professional environment to ensure NORAD's rapid response capability. To maintain the integrity of its air defense mission, NORAD will not discuss specific details of the exercises.

blackjack weekend: solstice/sentry psyop reaches peak

flashbacks: the portland psyop prep: ardent sentry & operation blackjack - the noard/northcom terror drills
blackjack weekend: solstice/sentry psyop reaches peakfrom cryptogon: I’ve avoided following the Blackjack/Jackblack developments too closely on here because I’m pretty sure that the point is to study the people who are paying attention to it. And yes, I’m up to speed on all the latest nonsense. There’s no need to send me any more story suggestions or emails about it, UNLESS you know who is behind it.

Next week, we have record U.S. Treasury debt offerings that might not go so well. There’s also Ardent Sentry 2009 underway now, and running into next week. And… Wait for it: The Summer/Winter solstice.

The fact that these events play out at the same time as the Blackjack/Jackblack game/viral marketing/social experiment is probably just a coincidence. In fact, I wasn’t planning on mentioning this at all because whoever is behind the Blackjack/Jackblack thing is probably getting off on watching all the activity on the message boards.

But then Boeing took a look. And now DHS is sniffing around.

Personally, I don’t think it’s viral marketing. I can’t imagine that there are more than a couple of thousand people on the planet even paying attention to this ridiculous stunt. I also seriously doubt that it has anything to do with any sort of pre-attack planning. I mean, come on you guys, snap out of it… My best guess is that it’s a sociology project and that the topics involved with it finally attracted the attention of DHS and others.

Who’s behind it? I have no idea, but I bet DHS is going to find out.

update1: woman is killed in illinois train derailment
woman is killed in illinois train derailmentfrom chicago tribune: Several cars from a Canadian National Railway Co. train smoldered Saturday near Rockford as federal investigators continued to probe whether standing water from heavy rains was a factor in a Friday night derailment that left a 41-year-old woman dead and three others injured. Zoila Tellez of Rockford died trying to flee her car, which was stopped at a rural Cherry Valley railroad crossing when the train derailed. Three passengers got out and ran, but Tellez collapsed 20 feet behind her vehicle and died, Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said Saturday. "When everything went to hell and debris started flying and everything, she got out of her car and started to run away from it and that's when she got caught in the fire," said Fiduccia, who planned a Sunday autopsy. A 17-year-old female passenger was in critical condition in the Stroger Hospital burn unit after being flown by helicopter Saturday, a hospital spokesman said. Another remained in a Rockford hospital. The train was on its route from Freeport to Chicago when 18 cars derailed about 9 p.m. Friday, CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said. National Transportation Safety Board officials said a probe could take up to a year. A team of 15 investigators, including representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration and CN will examine track structure and maintenance, integrity of the train cars, crossing signals and the hazardous materials associated with the crash, a spokesman said.

...remember that ardent sentry features "multiple events in Iowa and Kansas including simulated train derailments and foreign animal disease."...

update3: 6 dead, 70+ injured in subway collision in US capital
from dpa: Two subway trains collided Monday in the US capital, leaving at least six people dead and 70 injured, authorities said. The above-ground collision occurred about 5 pm (2100 GMT) just inside Washington, near the Maryland state line. One train had apparently stopped between stations before being struck from behind by a second train. 'The scene is as horrific as you can imagine,' Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty said. Local news footage showed one heavily damaged carriage pushed up on top of another. The force of the collision tore the floor out of the moving train's front car as it vaulted onto the stopped carriage. The driver of the moving train was among the dead, officials said. The driver's compartment at the front of the train was obliterated. Both trains were inbound from the suburbs into the city during the evening rush hour and apparently not filled to capacity. A similar collision of outbound trains packed with commuters at that hour could have produced a far higher casualty toll. Washington Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said that 70 people had been treated for injuries. Of those, 50 were 'walking wounded,' 14 people suffered serious injuries and six were in critical condition.
