Pop Music Study Shows Shift Toward Minor Key Melodies Since 1960*

It’s hardly a new idea that music is intertwined with our emotions. But how have our favorites changed over the decades, and what do these changes say about America’s shifting emotional landscape?

Music is a form of naturalistic data that, much like popular television, literature, and sales of consumer goods, scientists can sample for insight into our minds and values. Researchers E. Glenn Schellenberg and Christian von Scheve set out to examine songs popular in America during the last five decades, using a selection culled from Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 charts. Schellenberg and von Scheve wanted to learn how emotional cues in music, such as tempo (slow to fast) and mode (major or minor key), have changed since 1960.

Report Claims People Still Discover New Music Via Old Media

Nielsen Music 360 Report Says "I Can't Live Without My Radio"

from spin.com: People may be curious enough to Shazam 5 billion songs (11 million of which were Gotye's), but a new report conducted by Nielsen claims that radio remains the No. 1 way people discover new music. In fact, almost half of the 3,000 consumers surveyed — online, no less! — made that claim. The next most popular music referrals come from friends and relatives and YouTube, which, by the way, is the main way teenagers listen to music.

Other interesting stats include that after a recommendation from a friend, the information on music blogs (hi there!) is the most likely influencer in purchasing music, followed by brand endorsement. A tiny fraction of those who responded, 8 percent, share music on social-networking sites, while only 6 percent claim to upload music. (The report, as released, does not include any information on how many people illegally download or upload music, nor does it address other forms of file-sharing such as torrenting.)

The most popular genre of music among males is apparently "rock," which again could sort of mean anything (metal, indie, punk…rap?), while Top 40 was the top-reported genre among females — though that majority was only 15 percent, which leaves a lot to interpretation. As far as what mediums of music most people buy, consumers polled felt digital albums were a better value than CDs, but only by an 8 percent margin. And CDs are extremely unpopular among teens (duh!): Only 36 percent of teens have felt a CD was worth their lunch money in the past year, while 51 percent have used gift cards or their parents' plastic to download music in the same timeframe.

Only 7 percent of 18 to 24 year olds claim to buy posters, and while that's not entirely useful information, it could mean that most of those massive pieces of Pink Floyd and Bob Marley artwork in college dorms are either purchased at Target or maybe come with the space these days.

And last, but not least in terms of reinvigorating the economy of music, a majority of older people (41 percent of respondents ages 55 and up) have reduced their spending. Now that they've finally gotten around to replacing all their old REO Speedwagon LPs, apparently the thrill of finding new music isn't worth acting on. Maybe there's better value in replacing their Bee-Gee's 45s for under a buck.

Study Shows Pop Music Too Loud And All Sounds The Same

from reuters.com: Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same. Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used. "We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations - roughly speaking chords plus melodies - has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds. Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier. The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought. Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

studies show world 'has never been this peaceful'

Statistics reveal dramatic reductions in war deaths, family violence, racism, rape, murder and all sorts of mayhem. In his book, Mr Pinker writes: "The decline of violence may be the most significant and least appreciated development in the history of our species." from allgov: The United States has passed an unfortunate landmark… U.S. troops have now been stuck in Afghanistan longer than was the Soviet Union. As of November 26, the American military matched the length of time that the once mighty Red Army spent in Afghanistan: nine years, 50 days.

The Soviet occupation last from December 27, 1979, to February 15, 1989. The continuing U.S. campaign to route the Taliban and al Qaeda started on October 7, 2001.

The Soviet army withdrew in defeat, having suffered more than 14,000 deaths and more than 50,000 wounded. By comparison, the U.S. involvement has been less costly; 1,403 Americans have died, although that number has been rising rapidly. Half of the U.S. deaths have been in the last two years. About 7.000 Americans have been wounded.

The latest Pentagon “Report on Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan” paints a bleak picture of the current situation, with violence on the rise, corruption increasingly entrenched and the Taliban gaining strength.

Polls show that the majority of Americans have grown disillusioned with the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. Nonetheless, both President Barack Obama and the Congressional leadership of the Republican Party are committed to keeping American troops in the country until as least until 2014.

That means forensic experts could one day use those bacteria to prove who had touched an object, researchers report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Each one of us leaves a unique trail of bugs behind as we travel through our daily lives. While this project is still in its preliminary stages, we think the technique could eventually become a valuable new item in the toolbox of forensic scientists," lead author Noah Fierer of the University of Colorado said in a statement...

In addition to smudged fingerprints, the technique may also be useful in determining who has touched things like fabrics and highly textured materials, the researchers said... The new research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
