from wikileaks: At 5pm EST Friday 22nd October 2010 WikiLeaks released the largest classified military leak in history. The 391,832 reports (‘The Iraq War Logs’), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by soldiers in the United States Army. Each is a ‘SIGACT’ or Significant Action in the war. They detail events as seen and heard by the US military troops on the ground in Iraq and are the first real glimpse into the secret history of the war that the United States government has been privy to throughout.
The reports detail 109,032 deaths in Iraq, comprised of 66,081 ‘civilians’; 23,984 ‘enemy’ (those labeled as insurgents); 15,196 ‘host nation’ (Iraqi government forces) and 3,771 ‘friendly’ (coalition forces). The majority of the deaths (66,000, over 60%) of these are civilian deaths. That is 31 civilians dying every day during the six year period. For comparison, the ‘Afghan War Diaries’, previously released by WikiLeaks, covering the same period, detail the deaths of some 20,000 people. Iraq during the same period, was five times as lethal with equivalent population size.

The CNN host has been the frequent butt of "Daily Show" jokes, which may have contributed to his ill-considered comments yesterday on Pete Dominick’s satellite radio show. First, Sanchez called Jon Stewart a “bigot,” though he walked the comments back a bit later.
Dominick: How is he a bigot? Sanchez: I think he looks at the world through, his mom, who was a school teacher, and his dad, who was a physicist or something like that. Erroneous live cable news reports on CNN and Fox had said that the Coast Guard was firing shots on the river. nytimes threatens to shut down boston globe from dpa: The New York Times Co has threatened to shut down the Boston Globe unless the Globe's unions agree to 20 million dollars in cost-cutting measures, it was reported Saturday. The demands were made during a 90-minute meeting between Times and Globe executives and the newspaper's 13 unions, the Globe reported. The concessions include pay cuts, terminating the company's pension contributions and eliminating lifetime job guarantees, according to Daniel Totten, president of the Boston Newspaper Guild - the Globe's biggest union. The Globe, which began publishing in 1872, was sold to the New York Times Co in 1993.
jpmo to cut 9,200 jobs at wamu from cnn/money: JPMorgan Chase said Monday it plans to lay off 9,200 employees at Washington Mutual, the failed savings and loan that the New York City-based banking giant bought in September. Once the largest savings and loan in the country, Seattle-based WaMu collapsed because of bad bets on mortgages, resulting in the largest bank failure in U.S. history. At of the end of the third quarter, JPMorgan Chase reported that Washington Mutual had nearly 42,000 employees. So the 9,200 job cuts represent more than 20 percent of WaMu’s head count at the time that it failed. JPMorgan will slash 3,400 WaMu employees in Seattle, Washington, according to JPMorgan Chase spokeswoman Christine Holevas. That comes on top of the 1,600 job cuts in Pleasanton and San Francisco, California, which the company announced last week. The remaining 4,200 cuts will come from Washington Mutual offices nationwide, Holevas said. But she added that most branch workers will keep their jobs: Most of the layoffs will be at the corporate level.
portland-area temp workers losing jobs from oregonian: Temp workers are losing jobs in droves, according to state figures released Monday [nov24] that pegged the greater Portland area's unemployment rate at 6.9 percent in October. The seasonally adjusted jobless rate, up from September's 5.8 percent, is the highest since mid-2004, when the region was emerging from the 2001-2003 recession. But it's lower than the state's rate of 7.3 percent in October... About 75,800 Portland-area residents were unemployed and looking for work in October, up 23,200 from a year ago. The relatively diverse Portland economy tends to have a lower unemployment rate than the state as a whole, because it has less agriculture and fewer seasonal workers, Vander Vliet said. People keep moving into the area despite the lack of job growth, she said, and Oregonians who lose jobs tend not to leave the state.
soldiers choose war over bleak economy from ap: Sgt. Ryan Nyhus spent 14 months patrolling the deadly streets of Baghdad, where five members of his platoon were shot and one died. As bad as that was, he would rather go back there than take his chances in this brutal job market. Nyhus re-enlisted last Wednesday and in so doing joined the growing ranks of those choosing to stay in the U.S. military because of the bleak economy. "In the Army, you're always guaranteed a steady paycheck and a job," said the 21-year-old Nyhus. "Deploying's something that's going to happen. That's a fact of life in the Army — a fact of life in the infantry." In 2008, as the stock market cratered and the housing market collapsed, more young members of the Army, Air Force and Navy decided to re-up. While several factors might explain the rise in re-enlistments, including a decline in violence in Iraq, Pentagon officials acknowledge that bad news for the economy is usually good news for the military. In fact, the Pentagon just completed its strongest recruiting year in four years.

About 18 people were escorted from the Senate Banking Committee hearing. "The bailout is a sellout. The poor are suffering ... the homeless, the hungry, they're suffering," the protesters chanted as Capitol Police escorted them from the room. Before the outburst, Sen. John Tester (D-MT) was questioning the auto executives and criticizing President Bush's policies. "I hope this doesn't count against my time," he quipped. It's unclear who organized the protesters, but none appeared to be dressed in the rosy garb that has been a trademark of Code Pink, the anti-war group that regularly interrupts House and Senate hearings with protests.

The watch list now contains one million names based on the government’s own reported numbers. The ACLU says that the watch list could effect up to 5-10% of the U.S. population.
“Members of Congress, nuns, war heroes and other ’suspicious characters,’ with names like Robert Johnson and Gary Smith, have become trapped in the Kafkaesque clutches of this list, with little hope of escape,” said Fredrickson. “Congress needs to fix it, the Terrorist Screening Center needs to fix it, or the next president needs to fix it, but it has to be done soon.”
The ACLU announced the creation of an online form where victims of the terrorist watch list can tell their stories. The ACLU plans to use victims’ stories to advance their efforts to reform the watch list. The ACLU has more details here.

US Customs and Border Protection is supposed to stop these types of crimes. Instead, so many of its officers have been charged with committing those crimes themselves that their boss in Washington recently issued an alert about the "disturbing events" and the "increase in the number of employee arrests." Thomas S. Winkowski, assistant commissioner of field operations, wrote a memo to more than 20,000 officers nationwide noting that employees must behave professionally at all times - even when not on the job. "It is our responsibility to uphold the laws, not break the law," Winkowski wrote in the Nov. 16 memo obtained by The Miami Herald.
rhode island natl guard holds surprise training drill from ap: The Rhode Island National Guard held a surprise training drill to test how it would respond to quick activation by the governor in an emergency. More than 85 members of the Army and Air National Guard were awakened at about 4 a.m. yesterday and ordered to report to Camp Fogarty in East Greenwich and Quonset Air National Guard Base in North Kingston. The training exercise, "Operation Quick Resolve," was designed to test the Guard's ability to quickly alert, mobilize and deploy troops. In this case, the scenario was a massive civil disturbance during a pandemic flu scare. Among the strategies they practiced: using less-than-lethal tactics in crowd control.
