nypd begins biometric iris scans upon arrest

from cbs: Along with fingerprints and mug shots, the New York City Police Department is now taking photographs of the irises of crime suspects. The NYPD says the images will be used to help avoid cases of mistaken identity. The process takes about five seconds. Every suspect will be scanned again using a handheld device shortly before they are arraigned to make sure the irises match. Police say the software, handheld device and cameras cost about $23,800 each, and 21 systems will be used around the city. Central booking in Manhattan started taking photos Monday. The devices will be in use in Brooklyn and the Bronx in the upcoming weeks, and later in Staten Island and Queens. Police say the photos cause no damage to the eye.

This was the gist of a report by Richard Wolf delivered in this evening's [jan5] edition of cable network MSNBC’s Countdown program, hosted by Keith Olbermann. This report comes on the eve of a special White House interagency conference convoked by Obama to deal with the massive systemic failure of US intelligence in allowing the Yemen alumnus Mutallab to board the Amsterdam to Detroit flight while allegedly carrying a PETN explosive device on his person.

Wolf attributed his account to top officials in the Obama White House. The intentional sabotage of US antiterrorist screening procedures would explain why Mutallab had been able to use his US visa, escape interrogation and special searches, and board his flight, even though he was festooned with every red flag in the annals of airport security. If Wolf’s report is accurate, these Obama officials may be pulling on a thread which could begin to unravel the entire secret structure of illegitimate power which has afflicted this country — in this case, the apparatus which manufactures terrorist incidents for political purposes of mass manipulation, dictatorship, and war.

from the end run: On the day of the Flight 253 incident, reporter Michael Rosenfield of WXYZ in Detroit appeared live on CNN during the evening news and reported that, earlier that day, another passenger was arrested on a different flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. Same route, same airline, same day. This report appears to have been corroborated by a woman who was apparently a passenger on that flight in an on-camera interview; an interview which was even played at least once on CNN on December 25. However, the media subsequently blended this separate incident with the widely-reported “failed bombing” incident. Hence, the many media reports of Mutallab “screaming about Afghanistan” despite the fact that the witnesses actually describe him as being amazingly calm and totally silent. from rte news: A quantity of explosive, found in a flat on Dorset Street in Dublin this morning, was brought into Ireland following a failed security operation in Slovakia. The explosive was one of eight pieces of contraband planted by the authorities in the luggage of unsuspecting passengers at Bratislava Airport in Slovakia last weekend as part of a test of security procedures. Seven were detected by airport security, but the eighth - 90g of research development explosive or RDX - was put in the luggage of a Slovakian electrician who lives and works in Dublin. The 49-year-old unwittingly brought the material to Dublin when he returned from Christmas holidays.

The acid-tongued star was trying to fly from Costa Rica to Newark airport in New Jersey. But as she tried to board, the 76-year-old was pulled to one side after a Continental Airlines security agent checked her details. Her passport reads: "Joan Rosenberg AKA Joan Rivers." Rosenberg was her late husband's last name. The fashion-loving Rivers said afterwards: "If I were going to make up an alias, I wouldn't pick Rosenberg. I'd pick Jolie or Pitt... I can tell you Donna Karan does not make anything that hides a bomb." She told a US newspaper: "I tried the tears; they didn't work. I tried reasoning. I couldn't bribe because I didn't have any money... I said 'I'm going to have a heart attack over this,' so the woman called the paramedics." She eventually managed to get a flight home the following morning, she says.

“No country has ever treated me so badly,” Michael Yon wrote in a Facebook message. “Not China. Not Vietnam. Not Afghanistan. Definitely not Singapore or India or Nepal or Germany, not Brunei, not Indonesia, or Malaysia, or Kuwait or Qatar or United Arab Emirates. No county has treated me with the disrespect can that can be expected from our border bullies.”

“Yon was taken aside by the TSA and asked a series of questions, many of which seemed to have no bearing on national security. Finally when asked what his personal income was, he refused to answer because he felt it was none of their business. At this point they handcuffed and detained him until he was eventually released by Port Authority police because the TSA had no legitimate grounds to hold him,” reports Blog Critics.

Yon said that his experience was par for the course when entering America and not a manifestation of the Christmas Day attack.

When the officer asked the man for identification papers, he did not have a driving licence or other form of ID to prove his identity. The songwriter, famous for hits such as Like a Rolling Stone and Mr Tambourine Man, was then ordered into the back of her police car and driven back to his hotel to authenticate his story. It was not until she radioed her colleagues at the police station to ask who he was did she realise her mistake.

A spokesman for Long Branch police confirmed the incident with Dylan took place last month at the seaside town on the Jersey shore. "It has been the talk of the station," said one officer... The policewoman was very young and did not recognise Dylan. There was another officer with her and even he did not recognise Dylan... Both said they never listened to his music and had no idea what he looked like."

Dylan, 68, who was in the area for a concert with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, has been spotted out alone previously. Rather than use a chauffeur-driven car after a concert in belfast in 1991, he was spotted waiting at a bus stop by a television crew. Earlier this year, Dylan climbed back to the top of the British charts for the first time in 38 years with his album Together Through Life.

According to the complaint, Mr. Rosenbaum said he had brokered such sales many times over the past 10 years. “That it could happen in this country is so shocking,” said Dr. Bernadine Healy, former head of the Red Cross. No, it isn’t. When I needed a kidney several years ago and had no donor in sight, I would have considered doing business with someone like Mr. Rosenbaum. The current law — the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 — gave me little choice. I would be a felon if I compensated a donor who was willing to spare me years of life-draining dialysis and premature death.

top nj god/govt leaders arrested in black market money & organ scandal

from examiner: New Jersey top government officials and religious leaders, according to MSNBC, have been arrested in connection with a supposed "major corruption and international money-laundering conspiracy." Reportedly it was also discovered that many were involved in a black market organ ring. Among those arrested are two New Jersey mayors, an assemblyman, and a city deputy mayor. Several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the IRS, are said to be involved in this sting operation that has resulted in approximately 30 arrests. This is a breaking story so details are still minimal. But what has been said so far is that the mayors of Hoboken, Peter Cammarano, and Secaucus, Dennis Elwell, have been arrested. Also included in the arrests were Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, state Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt, and some rabbis from New York and New Jersey.

This is the same facility where three live plague-inflected mice went missing in September 2005. Officials concluded those mice died. A store manager at ShopRite referred questions to a corporate spokeswoman who did not immediately return a phone message Tuesday. But spokeswoman Karen Meleta told The Easton Express-Times for Sunday's editions that the store considered Campbell's request inappropriate.

corzine blasts troop deployment: it's an 'overuse'
from ap: New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine says an impending large deployment of state National Guard troops represents an overuse of the citizen soldiers that undermines their purpose...

"The fact that we continue to have the kind of overuse of our National Guard is just a mistake," said Corzine, who voted against the Iraq war when he was a U.S. senator.

Corzine called the soldiers "incredible patriots" who will "show up and serve with honor and go forward."

But he noted the deployments are "very harsh on the families" and said their continued use in the war hampers the National Guard.

"I think it is undermining of the basic purpose of the National Guard, which is to protect local and state elements and floods and fires and whatever problems that we can have," Corzine said, "and reduces our ability and it strains us on equipment." ...

Corzine said that "reflects, I think, a mismanagement of how we have prosecuted the war."
