Erica Kennedy, Miami Beach Author and Journalist, Dead at 42
from miaminewtimes.com: Erica Kennedy, author of the novels Bling and Feminista and an inspiration to thousands of Twitter followers, was found dead in her Miami Beach home on June 13, according to reports. She was 42. Kennedy's work spanned several fields: fashion publicist, journalist, blogger, novelist. But she may be best remembered for her interactive, supportive presence in social media. Twitter erupted with grief, disbelief, and condolences to Kennedy's loved ones when news of her death broke over the weekend. The cause of death has not yet been reported.

Haunting #Hologram of #Tupac 'Stuns' #Coachella2012

from msnbc: Rapper Tupac Shakur, who was shot to death 16 years ago at the age of 25, was resurrected on stage Sunday for an eerie posthumous performance with former creative collaborator and hip-hop icon, Snoop Dogg. In the closing set of the three-day Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calif., the life-like image of a shirtless, tattooed Shakur rises from the darkness, gold cross dangling from his neck. Raising his arms into the air, the image of the prolific rapper yells, “What the [expletive] is up, Coachella?!” Shakur's song “Hail Mary” was then played, with the hologram moving as if it were performing, and then Snoop Dogg joined the figure for their duet, “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted." Then the hologram begins to slowly fade before exploding in a burst of light. Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas in 1996 and his murder remains unsolved. The dramatic imagery proved a haunting highlight of the festival for many, but it was not without controversy. Wrote Rolling Stone reporter Matthew Perpetua, “The hologram basically looks like something out of a very well-rendered video game crossed with the apparition of Obi-Wan Kenobi who appears to Luke Skywalker in “The Empire Strikes Back.” It's very impressive in technical terms, but also very weird and sort of disturbing. The audience seemed to love it, so don't be surprised if this opens up the possibility for further "performances" by dead stars at the festival.” Musician Questlove tweeted, “That Pac Hologram haunted me in my sleep. Rest In Peace 2pac.”

from the record: Four guys. Ten albums. 20 years. The unlikely story of the band Sloan starts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a college city in eastern Canada's Maritime provinces. It was there where four young musicians — Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland and Andrew Scott — met and started playing together. thievery corporation blasts the 'culture of fear'

it's been nearly three years since the long-running dc duo known as thievery corporation plotted 'radio retaliation'; now they're back with their sixth studio album and it's called 'culture of fear'.

the group has a long history of conspiratorial-sounding song lyrics ("i'm the president of the shadow government / the grand governor of the federal reserve / public enemy of the society") and album titles (mirror conspiracy, richest man in babylon). and while the new record features song titles like 'web of deception', 'tower seven' & 'false flag dub' - the seattlepi points out that "despite the album title, 'culture of fear' rarely addresses specific political issues."

most of the reviews for the record haven't been exactly glowing and even their hometown city paper worries that "the group has sunk into a quicksand of bizarre politico-mysticism." one can't help but be reminded of muse, another band that uses conspiracy culture themes in their albums & lyrics - so the question becomes: is it all just a marketing pose? well, as with all art, the audience will have to answer that questions for themselves.

gil scott-heron, the 'godfather of rap', dies at 62

from cnn: Gil Scott-Heron, dubbed the "godfather of rap" for his mix of poetry and music, died Friday in New York, his publicist at XL Recordings said. He was 62. It was not immediately known what killed Scott-Heron, who was best known for the 1970 song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," a politically and socially charged song that examined the African American condition in America at the time. The song was banned by some radio stations. Scott-Heron died at 4 p.m. at a New York hospital, said Lisa Gottheil, his publicist at XL Recordings.

He will send 17,000 combat troops to join the 36,000-strong U.S. force already in the theater. The fact that the units now ordered to Afghanistan had originally been slated for Iraq underscores the new Administration's shift in priorities. The reinforcements include about 8,000 Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C., who should be in Afghanistan by late spring, and a 4,000-strong Army brigade from Fort Lewis, Wash., which should arrive in the summer. indie rap group makes waves with o’reilly death threats

from raw replay: A provocative new song from a little-known hip hop group is making waves for advocating the murder of two well known conservative icons.

The East Coast Avengers, a Boston-based threesome, last week leaked to the Internet a copy of their new song “Kill Bill O’Reilly.” The song’s profane, sometimes crass lyrics don’t dance around the band’s desire to see the Fox News host killed.

The band goes after many of O’Reilly’s better known controversies, such as the sexual harassment lawsuit he settled with a former producer, his claim that there was no such thing as homeless veterans and his defense of the Iraq war despite having never served in combat himself.

At one point, the group also takes aim at right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin, causing her to remind them that she’s ended her stint as an O’Reilly guest host. Conservative blog NewsBusters accuses the group of taking its talking points from liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America.

First posted at a Wired blog last week, the controversial song seems aimed at drumming up some free publicity for the band’s album, Prison Planet, to be released next month. The album title seems to be an homage to the Web site of the same name. PrisonPlanet.com’s founder Alex Jones, a prominent conspiracy theorist who believes that 9/11 was an inside job, is listed as one of the East Coast Avenger’s top friends on the group’s MySpace page.

delta & tsa employees admit smuggling drugs
from wsb-tv: Two former TSA employees and a former Delta worker admitted Wednesday to smuggling drugs at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Leslie Adgar, 42, of Decatur, Andre Mays, 24, of Atlanta, and Jon Patton, 44, of Lawrenceville, pleaded guilty to smuggling cocaine and heroin.

Patton and Mays were Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security guards working at Hartsfield-Jackson. Adgar worked for Delta Air Lines. Federal prosecutors said the trio was arrested after helping an undercover Drug Enforcement Agency officer ship drugs from Atlanta to New York.
