rockefeller chief james mcdonald dies in apparent suicide
rockefeller chief james mcdonald dies in apparent suicidefrom bloomberg: James McDonald, chief executive officer of New York investment firm Rockefeller & Co., died Sunday from a single gunshot wound that was probably self- inflicted, officials in Massachusetts said. His body was found in a car behind an auto dealership in Dartmouth, Mass., said Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the Bristol County district attorney’s office in New Bedford. While police didn’t find a note, McDonald had called his wife earlier in the day, Miliote said. McDonald, who was 56, headed Rockefeller & Co. for more than 8 years, building the former family office founded by oil man John D. Rockefeller in 1882 into a wealth manager with $25 billion in client assets. Paris-based Societe Generale SA last year bought 37% of Rockefeller Financial Services, parent of Rockefeller Co., to add wealthy clients in the U.S.

former beneficial ceo finn caspersen dies in apparent suicidefrom bloomberg: Finn M.W. Caspersen, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Beneficial Corp., was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. He was 67. He died from a single gunshot wound, the medical examiner said. “Finn was always a gentleman and always made his resources available,” said Rhode Island state Senator Dennis Algiere, who represents the seaside region, just across the state line from Connecticut. “He was a very charitable individual. He donated a lot of time and money to various organizations in our community over the years.”

econocrash updates: the fed, failures & bailout bust

geithner says auditing the fed is a 'line that we don't want to cross'
from corbett report: In an interview released today by Digg and the Wall Street Journal, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was pressured about the growing popular movement to Audit the Fed spearheaded by Texas Congressman Ron Paul. A visibly uncomfortable Geithner attempts to dismiss the question by stating "I'm sure people understand that you want to keep politics out of monetary policy." When Geithner is again pressed on the issue, he makes the stunning assertion that conducting an audit of the Federal Reserve—something never before done in its 96 year history—is a "line that we don't want to cross," proclaiming that such a move would be "problematic for the country."

Geithner's response that auditing the Fed would give politicians dangerous control over American monetary policy is mistaken at best and a deliberate lie at worst. Allowing the public to know what happened to their $24 trillion in bailout money does not give undue control of monetary policy to the people's elected representatives. Instead, such an audit would finally allow the public to see how their money has been spent in the midst of the largest spending binge in the history of the world's economy, hardly an unreasonable demand given the well-documented revolving door between the Treasury and Goldman Sachs, the main recipient of bailout funds. Ultimately, the Treasury Secretary is left spewing the absurdity that "I think even the sponsor of that bill recognizes how important it is to us to have the Fed independent of politics," which can only be said to be true insofar as Ron Paul—the sponsor of House Resolution (HR) 1207— wants to abolish the Federal Reserve system altogether.

heiress von bulow dies after 28yrs in coma

heiress von bulow dies after 28yrs in comafrom ap: Martha "Sunny" von Bulow, an heiress who spent the last 28 years of her life in oblivion after what prosecutors alleged in a pair of sensational trials were two murder attempts by her husband, died Saturday at age 76.

She died at a nursing home in New York, her children said in a statement issued by family spokeswoman Maureen Connelly. Martha von Bulow was a personification of romantic notions about high society - a stunning heiress who brought her American millions to marriages with men who gave her honored old European names.

But she ended her days in a coma, showing no sign of awareness as she was visited by her children and tended around the clock by nurses. In the 1980s, she was the offstage presence that haunted her husband's two sensational trials in Newport and Providence, R.I.

At the first trial, in 1982, Claus von Bulow was convicted of trying twice to kill her by injecting her with insulin at their estate in Newport, R.I. That verdict was thrown out on appeal, and he was acquitted at a second trial in 1985. The murder case split Newport society, produced lurid headlines and was later made into a film, "Reversal of Fortune," starring Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons.

bush may fire fallon for someone more ‘pliable’
bush may fire fallon for someone more ‘pliable’from thinkprogress: Defense Secretary Robert Gates has called CENTCOM commander Adm. William Fallon “one of the best strategic thinkers in uniform today.” Fallon opposed the “surge” in Iraq and has consistently battled the Bush administration to avoid a confrontation with Iran, calling officials’ war-mongering “not helpful.” Privately, he has vowed that an attack on Iran “will not happen on my watch.”

crimes by homeland security agents stir whistleblowers' alert
crimes by homeland security agents stir whistleblowers' alertfrom miami herald: Bribery. Drug trafficking. Migrant smuggling. US Customs and Border Protection is supposed to stop these types of crimes. Instead, so many of its officers have been charged with committing those crimes themselves that their boss in Washington recently issued an alert about the "disturbing events" and the "increase in the number of employee arrests." Thomas S. Winkowski, assistant commissioner of field operations, wrote a memo to more than 20,000 officers nationwide noting that employees must behave professionally at all times - even when not on the job. "It is our responsibility to uphold the laws, not break the law," Winkowski wrote in the Nov. 16 memo obtained by The Miami Herald.

rhode island natl guard holds surprise training drill
rhode island natl guard holds surprise training drillfrom ap: The Rhode Island National Guard held a surprise training drill to test how it would respond to quick activation by the governor in an emergency. More than 85 members of the Army and Air National Guard were awakened at about 4 a.m. yesterday and ordered to report to Camp Fogarty in East Greenwich and Quonset Air National Guard Base in North Kingston. The training exercise, "Operation Quick Resolve," was designed to test the Guard's ability to quickly alert, mobilize and deploy troops. In this case, the scenario was a massive civil disturbance during a pandemic flu scare. Among the strategies they practiced: using less-than-lethal tactics in crowd control.

beck & hagee: ‘is obama the antichrist?’

from thinkprogress: Today on his CNN Headline News show, Glenn Beck asked Pastor John Hagee whether Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is the embodiment of evil: "There are people - they say this about Bill Clinton - he might be the anti-Christ. Odds that Barack Obama is the Antichrist?" In 2006, Beck also called Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) the anti-Christ, stating, “I think we may have found our Antichrist and our next president.”
