The Quinnipiac University poll showed 48 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president, compared to 42 percent who disapprove. The president also scored low marks from Americans on his handling of the situation in Afghanistan, with just 38 percent saying they approved of his approach, but a majority did say it was the "right thing" for US troops to be in the country.

west virginia's byrd becomes longest-serving congressman in US history

from usatoday: Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., made a rare appearance on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday to mark his 20,774th day as a member of Congress, making him the longest-serving member in history.

"Today, Madam President, is more than a commemoration of the length of service of one U.S. senator," said Byrd. "Today also celebrates the great people of the great and mighty state of West Virginia, who have honored me by repeatedly placing their faith in me."

Byrd, who turns 92 on Friday, is known for his command of arcane Senate rules and his ability to steer federal dollars to his home state. He also paid tribute to his late wife Erma, who died in 2006 at the age of 88. "My only regret is that my dear wife Erma is not here to enjoy this moment with me, but I know - yes, I do! - that she is smiling down from heaven and reminding me not to get a big head," he said.

Byrd made his remarks after the Senate passed a resolution honoring him.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., opened Wednesday's session by saying, "Every day since Jan. 3, 1953 - that's 56 years, 10 months and 16 days - West Virginians have been proud to be represented in Washington by Robert Byrd."

Byrd, who joined a filibuster to block civil-rights legislation in 1964, endorsed then-senator Barack Obama for the presidency during the 2008 campaign.

"Countless colleagues, myself included, have looked to him for advice, guidance and leadership over the years," President Obama said in a statement. "He is one of the most steadfast defenders of the United States Constitution, and he never lets us forget the guiding principles that make our nation great."

Byrd - elected to the House in 1952 and the Senate in 1958 - broke the longevity record held by Sen. Carl Hayden, D-Ariz., who served in Congress from 1912 to 1969.

9/11 updates: terror trials, truth & consequences

the real reason only 5 detainees are coming to new york?
from history commons: US Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced that five detainees would be moved from Guantanamo Bay to New York, where they would stand trial for carrying out the 9/11 attacks. However, five other detainees will continue to be tried before military commissions, which have lower standards of evidence. The five detainees coming to New York have previously indicated they intend to plead guilty, although the five to be tried before military commissions have not.

The New York five are:Khalid Sheikh Mohammed;Ramzi bin al-Shibh; Ali Abdul Aziz Ali; Mustafa al-Hawsawi; and Khallad bin Attash. They indicated their intention to plead guilty at a hearing in Gunatanamo on 8 December 2008.

According to this McClatchy article, the five Holder says will be tried before military commissions are: Ibrahim al Qosi, who is trying to have incriminating statements he says were made under torture/coercion suppressed and wants to go home to Sudan; Omar Khadr, who is fighting the charges against him. His lawyers claim most of the evidence against him is based on statements he made under coercion; Ahmed al Darbi, who says he was tortured into confessing; Noor Uthman Mohammed, who denied many of the charges against him; and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, who says he’s innocent and was also tortured into confessing.

As I pointed out earlier today, there is a lot of evidence against al-Nashiri. However, based on what I know of the Khadr case, he would stand a very good chance of acquittal, unless the bar was lowered from beyond reasonable doubt to “I guess he might have done it.” The other three to be tried before military commissions I don’t know much about.

Is it just a coincidence that the five detainees who have indicated they intend to plead guilty are going to New York, but the ones that are fighting the charges are getting military commissions?

first US marijuana cafe opens in portland, oregon

from reuters: The United States' first marijuana cafe opened on Friday, posing an early test of the Obama administration's move to relax policing of medical use of the drug.

The Cannabis Cafe in Portland, Oregon, is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it - as long as they are out of public view - despite a federal ban.

"This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members," said Madeline Martinez, Oregon's executive director of NORML, a group pushing for marijuana legalization.

"Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana," said Martinez. "We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College, based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis."

The cafe - in a two-story building which formerly housed a speak-easy and adult erotic club Rumpspankers - is technically a private club, but is open to any Oregon residents who are NORML members and hold an official medical marijuana card.
