The death toll has reached 189 and more than 1 million people have been infected, most of them in the nine regions of Western Ukraine. President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko has called in the World Health Organisation and a team of nine specialists are carrying out tests in Kiev and Lviv to identify the virus. Samples have been sent to London for analysis. President Yushchenko said: “People are dying. The epidemic is killing doctors. This is absolutely inconceivable in the 21st Century.”

Their study shows that if this group has a high level of hsCRP they lower their risk for heart attacks and arterial disease. This even though hsCRP indicates generalized inflammation not just arterial and heart. Of course they didn't address the negative side effects of lowering your cholesterol below normal levels. Dr. Nissan of the Cleveland Clinic admits they will now get to treat a lot more people (Oh boy!). One CNBC host asked no joke why statins are not put in the water supply. The response: That would be a Communist plot just like fluoride.

That simple act, multiplied across millions of keyboards in homes around the country, has given rise to a new early warning system for fast-spreading flu outbreaks, called Google Flu Trends... Its new service at google.org/flutrends analyzes those searches as they come in, creating graphs and maps of the country that, ideally, will show where the flu is spreading.
indonesian aids patients face microchip monitoring from ap: Lawmakers in Indonesia's remote province of Papua have thrown their support behind a controversial bill requiring some HIV/AIDS patients to be implanted with microchips — part of extreme efforts to monitor the disease. Local health workers and AIDS activists called the plan "abhorrent." "People with AIDS aren't animals; we have to respect their rights," said Tahi Ganyang Butarbutar, a prominent Papuan activist. The high court didn't question the scientific basis of concerns about harm to marine mammals, but ruled that the Navy's need for the exercises was more important.
activists keep heat on manchin over coal river mtn from ap: Environmentalists will keep the heat on Gov. Joe Manchin over Massey Energy's planned mountaintop removal mine on the Coal River Mountain. Whitesville-based Coal River Mountain Watch will hold press conferences in Charleston and Beckley Dec. 9 to discuss a study it's commissioned. While Richmond, Va.-based Massey wants to mine 6,000 acres, environmentalists are trying to preserve the mountain for a wind farm. The news conference will focus on research by Downstream Strategies of Morgantown. It shows wind development is a wise use not just for Coal River Mountain, but for other parts of southern West Virginia. Manchin has declined to intervene in the dispute, saying it's inappropriate for him to interfere with the regulatory process.
un blowback: more than 650 international scientists dissent over man-made global warming claims from epw: The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spokeout in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.
syria signs defense pact with russia from times online: Syria sought to revive its security alliance with Russia today, when President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Moscow to clinch a series of military agreements, raising fears that the new Cold War that has erupted in the Caucasus will spill over into the Middle East. “Our position is that we are ready to co-operate with Russia in any project that can strengthen its security,” the Syrian leader told Russian newspapers at the start of his two-day trip. “I think Russia really has to think of the response it will make when it finds itself closed in a circle.”

A total of 7,802 people who received Gardasil, made by Merck and Co. Inc., have reported adverse events to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) between June 8, 2006, and April 30, 2008. The United States distributed 2.2 million doses of the vaccine in 2006 and 11.3 million in 2007.

from upi: Twenty-one homeless individuals in Poland have died after being given an unproven bird-flu virus vaccine, authorities have charged. Prosecutors have accused three doctors and six nurses of misleading the homeless individuals by telling them they were being given a new influenza vaccine rather than a vaccine for the H5N1 bird-flu virus, The Daily Telegraph said Thursday. Polish Health Minister Ewa Kopacz has condemned the alleged testing and called for a permanent ban on all involved personnel from future health treatment. "It is in the interests of all doctors that those who are responsible for this are punished," Kopacz said of last year's testing efforts.

The announcement by Shelby Hallmark, director of the Office of Worker Compensation in the Labor Department, cleared an obstacle that has prevented some former Nevada workers from getting help to battle job-related cancers and other serious illnesses that showed up years after they completed careers at weapons sites.
new west virginia wind farm up & running
from examiner: A new wind farm located along the Allegheny Front in Grant County is generating electricity. Dominion Resources spokesman Karl Neddenien says some turbines at the NedPower Mount Storm wind farm have been operating since the first of the year. Neddenien wouldn't say how many turbines are now generating electricity. He says that number changes based on wind conditions on any given day. NedPower is jointly owned by Richmond, Va.-based Dominion Resources and Shell WindEnergy Inc. The project's first phase involves 82 turbines capable of generating 164 megawatts of electricity. Dominion and Shell have said they plan 50 more turbines capable of generating 100 megawatts despite an ongoing legal challenge by homeowners living near the wind farm.

NASA scientists say the soil they have collected from the northern polar regions of the red planet would be good for growing asparagus and turnips, but probably not strawberries. The Phoenix Mars Lander scooped up soil with its robotic arm and scientists say the sample is similar to dirt found in some backyards on Earth. The project's lead chemist, Samuel Kounaves, from the University of Arizona says he is flabbergasted by what has come back. "We basically have found what appears to be the requirements, the nutrients to support life, whether past present or future," he said.
Defence Minister Bogdan Klichsays he wants to ensure the missile system serves Poland's interests. Klich's comments underlined the shift in thinking under the new pro-business government that took office Friday.
There is anxiety in Poland that Warsaw could further strain its already shaky ties with Moscow by agreeing to allow U.S. interceptor missiles on its territory.
Other Polish leaders, including new Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski, have warned against provoking Russia without being sure that Washington offers compensating benefits.
The United States insists the interceptors are aimed at countering an alleged Iranian missile threat. Moscow scoffs at that, saying that plan undermines Russia's nuclear deterrent.
