from ap: Scared and feeling out of options, the father of a Portland teenager called the FBI in 2009 and warned that his son was considering flying to Yemen and committing violent jihad, an FBI agent testified Tuesday. That call and a subsequent meeting set off a 15-month investigation that culminated with the arrest of the teenager, Mohamed Mohamud, the FBI said. He is now 20 and charged with attempting to detonate a weapon of mass destruction at a Portland Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

from israel national news: Former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has been elected Chicago's first Jewish mayor.

He faces a series of challenges, beginning with the fact that his last name is not Daley. His predecessor, Richard M. Daley, and his father, Richard J. Daley, have controlled the city of 2.69 million for 42 of the past 55 years. The current economic crisis in the United States has affected the Midwestern city as it has others, leading to an estimated budget deficit of some $600 million.

Nevertheless, Emanuel's popularity may stand him in good stead, at least initially: the 51-year-old former Congressman won 55 per cent of the vote in a field of six candidates, thus ending the need for a run-off in April. Gery J. Chico, former chief of staff to incumbent Mayor Richard M. Daley, his closest competitor, garnered less than half with only 24 percent.

Emanuel is known as a tough pragmatist and for his blunt manner of speaking. During his tenure as chief of staff in the Obama White House, he told an Israeli diplomat that the United States was “fed up” with Israel. Less than a year later, however, as he considered a run in the Chicago mayoral race, he told rabbis that the Obama administration had “screwed up the messaging” and failed to convey its support for the Jewish State.

President Barack Obama called Tuesday night to congratulate Emanuel, saying, “As a Chicagoan and a friend, I couldn't be prouder.”

cia/cfr envoy frank g. wisner sent to 'speak to mubarak'

from washington post: When it was time to give Egypt's embattled leader a gentle nudge, President Obama picked a seasoned diplomat who could deliver the message as a close friend. Frank G. Wisner, a former U.S. ambassador to Cairo, has known Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for decades and has long advocated strong U.S. ties with him.

The White House dispatched Wisner to Cairo to "add his perspective to our analysis on current developments," as State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley put it on Monday. Within 24 hours of Wisner's private chat with the Egyptian president, Mubarak had announced on state television that he would step down at the end of his current term.

Details of Wisner's conversation with Mubarak were not disclosed, but an administration official said the envoy sought to impress upon the leader the need both to declare he would not seek reelection and to step aside immediately in favor of a transitional government.

Former U.S. government officials who have worked with Wisner, 72, said the retired diplomat developed a close relationship with Mubarak during his assignment in Egypt as ambassador from 1986 to 1991.

After his retirement from the State Department, Wisner worked for Patton Boggs, a Washington lobbying firm that has represented Egypt in the past. He also served on the board of Egypt's largest bank, Commercial International Bank Egypt SAE.

It was not the first time that a U.S. administration had called on Wisner to intervene in a foreign crisis. In 2005, the George W. Bush administration appointed the New York native as a special U.S. representative to international talks on Kosovo's future. The negotiations ended with Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Wisner is the son of the well-known U.S. intelligence officer Frank Wisner Sr., who joined the Office of Strategic Services - the CIA's predecessor - and was partly the inspiration for the character Edward Wilson in the 2006 film "The Good Shepherd."

from paul joseph watson: How will Americans react when the government begins to impose the same austerity measures that are causing riots, street battles, fuel blockades and other assorted chaos in France? Will we witness mass civil unrest or will the sleeping middle classes continue to scratch their butts and watch Dancing with the Stars?

Back in June we forecast that the imminent onset of so-called austerity measures, which in reality represent nothing more than an elevated phase of government-run looting of the taxpayer, would herald an “age of rage,” leading to “riots and even revolutions as people react with fury in response to their jobs, savings, basic public services, pensions and welfare money being seized by the financial terrorists who caused the economic collapse in the first place.”

Four months later and citizens of one of the most prosperous countries in the world with the highest standard of living have shut down France after six days of strikes and protests in response to government plans to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 and the full state pension age from 65 to 67.

Undoubtedly, there are two different protests occurring in France. The more violent scenes are the work of the rent-a-mob anarchist youths who couldn’t care less about pensions but will waste no opportunity to don black hoods and pointlessly smash up shop windows in demonstrations against “capitalism,” when in reality government seizure of pensions has all the hallmarks of command and control socialism and nothing to do with true free market capitalism.

These youths are more concerned about their welfare checks being cut, but they won’t garner the sympathy of the rest of the French people by taking baseball bats to Starbucks forecourts in mocked up media stunts. The legitimate protests and the ones that genuinely hurt the establishment and put the idiot anarchists to shame are being run by French workers, truck drivers, and union leaders, and enjoy the support of around 70% of the population.

from raw story: Reporters covering the G20 summit in Toronto say they were the target of police violence overnight, as riots blamed on anarchist groups left four police cars burning in the financial district and resulted in the arrests of some 150 people.

"A newspaper photographer was shot with a plastic bullet in the backside, while another had an officer point a gun in his face despite identifying himself as a member of the media," reported the Canadian Press news agency. The agency did not say if it was its own reporters who were targeted.

In a remarkable series of Tweets early Sunday morning, journalist Steve Paikin of public broadcaster TV Ontario said he witnessed "police brutality" against a reporter and the arrests of peaceful demonstrators.

"I saw police brutality tonight. It was unnecessary. They asked me to leave the site or they would arrest me. I told them I was doing my job," he Tweeted.

portland professor accuses student of being fbi provocateur

from daily vanguard: A tenured Portland State economics professor is currently suspended from teaching after he publicly accused a student during a class lecture of being an FBI informant and of trying to sell guns to students.

Professor John Hall, during his 2 p.m. “Economics 445/545: Comparative Economic Systems” class on Jan. 14th, verbally harangued student Zachary Bucharest for nearly half an hour, according to students in the class.

Hall, who has taught at PSU for 24 years, began the class with a lecture relevant to the course material but about halfway through the two-hour long class, he began to describe his experiences with law enforcement in other countries including Eastern Europe, according to a student who wished to remain anonymous.

Hall claimed to have been surveilled at times throughout his life and then told the class that an FBI informant and agent provocateur was in their midst. Hall said this person served as a sniper in the Israeli army and called him a killer with access to a personal arsenal. He then pointed at Bucharest and identified him as the informant in question, according to the unnamed student.

Bucharest, a student at PSU since the fall of 2006 and the current chief of staff for ASPSU, sat silently throughout the ordeal, according to students in the class. Hall accused Bucharest of trying to organize students to participate in violent acts against the university, according to the unnamed student.

from presstv: Iran said Saturday it arrested seven people, including two Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives, who planned to stoke unrest and violence on a march scheduled for February 11. The rally on Thursday will commemorate the 31st victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Intelligence forces, according to Borna News Agency, arrested the men who had plans to leave the country for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and then head to the United States. According to the report, some of those arrested work for the US-backed Radio Farda, a Persian language station based in Prague and Washington.
