"America's Got Talent" Singer Believed He Was Injured In War
from ap: A soldier-turned-TV contestant whose claims of being injured in battle were dismissed by military officials says he believed he was telling the truth, but he doesn't know what is real. Timothy Michael Poe appeared on Monday's episode of the NBC show "America's Got Talent," claiming he was injured by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009, though Minnesota National Guard records don't support his claims. Poe, who now lives in Texas, cried in portions of an interview aired Friday on WFAA-TV in Dallas. He told the station he doesn't know why he "believed things that happened to me, and they might not have?" Poe won over the crowd and celebrity judges on the talent show with a moving story about how he blocked a grenade blast to save his buddies. He said the blast broke his back and left him with a brain injury. The National Guard has said military records show Poe wasn't injured in combat in Afghanistan, and he has been criticized — especially by veterans — since he made his injury claims. Poe also provided a photo to the NBC talent show of a soldier he passed off as himself, though the photo actually shows Staff Sgt. Norman Bone in Afghanistan in 2006. Bone said Friday that Poe's alleged lies disrespect all men and women who've served in the military, and he called Poe's actions "completely wrong." Poe's fiance, Carrie Morris, has said Poe accidentally submitted the photo because he was rushed. Poe has declined requests for interviews from the Associated Press.Friday, March 16, 2012

for hollywood, it was a tough 2010 as spending continued to fall
from latimes: To paraphrase Apollo 13 astronaut Jack Swigert, "Hollywood, we have a problem." The industry that was supposed to be immune to economic downturns looks like it's going to have some re-entry problems as the economy begins to recover. Broad swaths of the entertainment business declined in 2010. DVD sales were off 13%. Music CD purchases plummeted 19%. Video game sales as well as concert and theater attendance also fell. Even the turnout for America's favorite pastimes — baseball and NASCAR — was down. And swift changes in technology will make it difficult for Hollywood to capture pre-recession levels of revenue. So much for the value of escapism. But perhaps most ominously, last summer the pay-television industry suffered an unprecedented net loss - for the first time - of customers, a yellow warning light that consumers may no longer regard cable TV as a must-have utility on par with electricity and phone service.flashbacks: pay tv subscriptions fall for first time ever in US &

behavior placement: corporate media greenwashes your lazy ass
nbc's cynical mind-control games
from the week: First there was product placement. Now there's "behavior placement", the planting of subtle messages in popular TV shows to encourage certain viewer behavior — such as healthy eating or eco-conscious habits — and thereby convince sponsors that their brands will be associated with "feel-good, socially aware" shows. NBC has owned up to the practice, reports The Wall Street Journal, as part of its Green Initiative: If "Tina Fey is tossing a plastic bottle into the recycling bin," the theory goes, audience members will be more apt to do the same. Innocuous or "Orwellian"?
This isn't just creepy, it's dumb: The pressure to be eco-conscious has reached a new high, says says Christopher Rosen in Movieline. NBC implies that people are too dumb to make healthy decisions on their own. How "patently stupid." Do viewers really need NBC "telling them how to run their life?"
What's the big deal? Despite the hubbub, the principles NBC promotes are "fairly innocuous," says Amy Chozick in the Wall Street Journal. "Climate change may be controversial," but these shows don't make a political statement — they simply show characters making green-conscious decisions. "Most people can agree... [this] is a good thing."
Unfortunately, healthy habits aren't the bottom line: Clearly, for NBC, behavior placement is about dollar signs and cynicism, says Jon Bershad in Mediaite. The execs' attempts to manipulate their viewers to draw eco-conscious, health-conscious advertisers is "soul-crushing" proof that "everything is a business" these days.

nbc continues to highlight dyncorp gen. barry mccaffrey
from allgov: Since NBC doesn’t bother to point out the conflicts of interest held by oft-used military analyst Barry McCaffrey, Huffington Post and others have. McCaffrey has appeared on the network’s cable subsidiary, MSNBC, no less than 10 times in the past month to talk about the importance of staying in Afghanistan and training local security forces. With each appearance, McCaffrey was identified only as a retired general—and not someone who sits on the board of DynCorp International, a security company currently getting paid by the U.S. government to develop Afghanistan’s police force, build barracks and do the laundry of U.S. troops. According to Forbes, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan account for 53% of DynCorp’s $3.1 billion in annual revenue.
MSNBC also hasn’t bothered to point out his relationship with Army General David Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, for whom McCaffrey recently completed a report about the war. McCaffrey has been seen praising Petraeus on TV, while criticizing President Barack Obama’s proposed troop-withdrawal deadline.

comcast to buy control of nbc universal in $30b transaction
from latimes: In a momentous shift in the balance of power of the entertainment industry, cable television giant Comcast Corp. on Thursday made it official by announcing that it was buying control of NBC Universal from General Electric Co. The proposed $30-billion transaction is the culmination of the longtime ambition by Comcast's chief executive, Brian Roberts, to transform his family-controlled Philadelphia company from a passel of distribution pipes into a leading producer of movies and TV shows and owner of prominent cable channels. The deal underscores how the high profit-margin business of cable TV - not a broadcast network or a Hollywood movie studio - has become the financial backbone of media conglomerates. "Cable channels are the best part of the media business today; they are really the crown jewels of any entertainment company," Comcast Chief Operating Officer Steve Burke told analysts in a conference call.flashbacks: comcast caps, feds say comcast violates internet rules & fcc fines comcast for airing fake news

80% say they would not pay for online content
from zero hedge: In a blow to ongoing plans by Murdoch (and others) to capitalize on premium content, a new study from Forrester shows that 80% of consumers would not be willing to pay for online news content.
As readers are able to move from one content aggregator to another with greater facility than the Fed prints another billion dollars, Rupert's approach will likely entail a massive "game theoretical" strategy whereby either all move to a premium model or none do: if even one "defector" remains, it will render the "premium-paid" plan DOA.

jenna bush hired as 'today' reporter for general electric
from washington post: NBC's "Today" show has hired someone with White House experience as a new correspondent - former first daughter Jenna Hager. The daughter of former President George W. Bush will contribute stories about once a month on issues like education to television's top-rated morning news show, said Jim Bell, its executive producer. Hager, a 27-year-old teacher in Baltimore, said she has always wanted to be a teacher and a writer, and has already authored two books. But she was intrigued by the idea of getting into television when Bell contacted her. "It wasn't something I'd always dreamed to do," she said. "But I think one of the most important things in life is to be open-minded and to be open-minded for change."

banksters team up to buy weather channel
from dealbook: An investor group led by NBC Universal and two private equity firms clinched a deal for the Weather Channel on Sunday, after three weeks of negotiations over the sale of the weather news giant. Though the parties did not disclose the price, the buyers – NBC and the private equity firms Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group – will pay just under $3.5 billion, people briefed on the matter said... Others financing the deal are Deutsche Bank, which was also the buyers’ lead financial adviser, and General Electric’s GE Commercial Finance unit... JPMorgan Chase worked as Landmark’s financial adviser, while Wilcox & Savage, Kilpatrick Stockton, Venable and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom provided legal advice.

kristol & russert: msm attack dogs are all bark
neo-con mass murder facilitator kristol slams paul on faux news
from lew rockwell: This YouTube clip is a great demonstration of what neo-conservatives believe: in the warfare, welfare, corporate, police state–and global hegemony. Other countries better like it, or we’ll destroy them. And no one better question the shifting rationales, since we have always been at war with Islamic East Asia.
Kristol is horrified that Ron Paul wants to question some of the past and current practices of the biggest government in the history of the world, to call us away from empire and the corporate state, and to our constitutional republican origins. And note Kristol’s identification of the American nation with the central government. To be “anti-American” is to disagree with social welfare spending, corporate welfare spending, and Pentagon spending.
nbc’s russert attempts to portray ron paul as a hypocrite & spendthrift
from truthnews: In an attempt to make Ron Paul appear a hypocrite, NBC’s Tim Russert badgered the Republican presidential candidate on Meet the Press over the weekend about so-called "earmarks," money set aside for special projects within congressional districts.
“Paul, the libertarian-leaning GOP lawmaker from Lake Jackson, said on NBC’s Meet the Press that he has requested earmarks ‘because I represent people who are asking for some of their money back,’” reports the Houston Chronicle. “‘They steal our money,’ said Paul, during a heated exchange with the show’s host, Tim Russert, who questioned whether he was being true to his convictions.”

police state technocracy run amok
the pentagon's electronic warfare program
from global research: In 2003, then Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld signed a document called the Information Operation Roadmap
which outlined, among other things, the Pentagon's desire to dominate the entire electromagnetic spectrum. If you are unfamiliar with this document, more detail can be found in a previous article here... How exactly do you create a real time electronic battlespace picture? And where exactly is the battlespace? A very similar statement was made in the Project for a New American Century document 'Rebuilding America's Defenses' published in September of 2000 (more about this document here and here.)
pentagon report: high-flying spy drones hobbled
from danger room: The Pentagon's highest-flying spy drone isn't able to "consistently" perform, even on a "limited schedule," according to a draft Defense Department report... That is, when they can fly. According to a draft report
, from the Defense Department's Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E), the current Global Hawk models - so-called "Block 10s" - aren't able to get into the air nearly as often as they ought to. The document was obtained by the Project on Government Oversight and provided to DANGER ROOM.
army expansion plans outlined
from ap: The Pentagon will send six new combat brigades to bases in Texas, Georgia, and Colorado in the coming years as part of an extensive plan to increase the size of the Army. As the Army moves to grow by 74,000 soldiers by 2010, officials mapped out decisions to add the combat brigades and eight support units around the country, as well an agreement to delay moving two brigades out of Germany until 2012-2013. The overall effort would cost $66.4 billion in 743 military construction projects through 2013.
nbc4 report on 'chemtrail weather control'
from truthnews: Sure, the government is simply attempting to “mitigate” global warming by way of “geo-engineering.” As noted in the above video, a lab analysis reported high levels of barium contained in California "contrails."

from reuters: Fourth-ranked broadcaster NBC has quietly begun reimbursing advertisers an average of $500,000 each for failing to reach guaranteed ratings levels, the first time a network has taken such a step in years, media buyers said.Networks usually offer make-goods - free advertising slots - in the event of such shortfalls. But NBC has none to give. In fact, no broadcast network has much ad inventory left between now and year's end - except for, perhaps, a handful of units the week between Christmas and New Year's, and that doesn't do much for advertisers chasing holiday shoppers.
CBS, ABC and Fox also are doling out make-goods, primarily for the first quarter. They have blamed softness on a new ratings formula, but media agencies disagree. None of the networks would comment.

williams 'jokes' that media has already chosen hillary
from raw story: Brian Williams, host of NBC's Nightly News, appeared on Saturday Night Live last night as guest host.
In a sketch poking fun at the most recent Democratic debate, the reputed newsman made a shocking admission: "Incidentally, this arrangement was all determined by the drawing of lots except for Senator Clinton, who we're deliberately placing in the center since all of us in the media want her to be the nominee."
The other candidates, everyone except Barack Obama, nod knowingly.
"Gentlemen, I'm going to have to run; I have a 15-minute pre-debate interview with Senator Clinton, we're going to ask her about her first 100 days in office," Williams says in the sketch. "I wish you all good luck tonight, though we, again, in the media have pretty much made up our minds to go with Senator Clinton. We'll see you in a few minutes."
