in third white house bid, paul's message the same from ap: Long before he discovered Friedrich Hayek and other free-market economists, Ron Paul got a lesson in sound money from his oldest brother, Bill. It was the height of World War II, and the Paul boys were laying aside quarters from their Pittsburgh Press routes and pooling pennies earned from pulling dirty milk bottles off the line at the family dairy to buy war bonds. One day, Ronnie suggested what was, in retrospect, a rather Keynesian solution: "Why doesn't the government just PRINT this money?"
"Well," Bill responded, "then the money wouldn't have any value." Bill was 10. Ron was about 7.
Washington bureaucrats, Paul says now, "would like it to be complicated, and that we have to accept this complex monetary system of the Federal Reserve. But it's no more complicated than two little kids talking ..."
It's not complicated, he insists. These are the themes he has been addressing, consistently, since he entered politics in 1974, over the course of 12 terms in Congress, through his third bid for the White House: Free markets are good. The Federal Reserve is evil. The gold standard should be restored. Government is the cause, not the cure, of the nation's troubles.
compact fluorescent lights dumping mercury directly into landfills from natural news: Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have become all the rage over the past several years, touted by many as the preferable "green" way to light a home, save energy, and promote environmental responsibility. While they may use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFL bulbs are filled with toxic mercury that, when disposed of, contaminates landfills and the environment. A report released in 2008 from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection revealed that when a CFL bulb is broken, it can release dangerously high levels of mercury into the air.
robert f kennedy jr vs don blankenship: debate on mountaintop mining before a west virginia audience from guardian: It was an event billed as the smackdown between the baddest coal baron around and the environmental heir to the liberal Kennedy legacy, live on stage and in the heart of Appalachia mine country. Stage right, appropriately, was Don Blankenship, chairman of Massey Energy, a meaty impassive presence, his Kentucky drawl never picking up speed or volume. On the left, Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has spent his life defending waterways, making lawyerly argument out of staccato bursts of statistics. The pairing at the University of Charleston was the perfect personification of America's deep divides: Republican versus Democrat; old industry v new, global warming denier v impassioned advocate for climate change laws. The battle in Thursday night's debate was over mountaintop removal mining, which blows the tops off mountains to get at thin seams of coal and of which Blankenship is the most notorious promoter. "This is the worst environmental crime that ever happened in our history," began Kennedy ... "It's a bunch of rhetoric and untruths," [Blankenship] returned. "This industry is what made this country great. If we forget that, we are going to have to learn to speak Chinese." Or accept early deaths, he argued, noting that expectancy in Angola is 39 years.
info commissioner: climategate scientists broke the law from climategate.tv: The scientific unit at the heart of the climate change emails scandal broke the law by hiding data from sceptics. Researchers at the University of East Anglia breached the Freedom of Information Act by refusing to comply with requests for the data. The decision by the Information Commissioner’s Office comes months after controversial emails from the university’s Climatic Research Unit, a global leader in its field, were released on to the internet. In one email the head of the unit, Professor Phil Jones, asked a colleague to delete emails relating to a report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In another message, Professor Jones told how he had persuaded the university to ignore Freedom of Information requests from sceptics. Others showed how an eminent climatologist admitted it was a ‘travesty’ scientists could not explain a lack of global warming in recent years. The Information Commissioner’s Office yesterday revealed the university had failed in it duties under the Freedom of Information Act.
update2: marijuana helps in battle against cancer from afp: The main chemical in marijuana appears to aid in the destruction of brain cancer cells, offering hope for future anti-cancer therapies, researchers in Spain wrote in a study released Thursday. The authors from the Complutense University in Madrid, working with scientists from other universities, found that the active component of marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), causes cancer cells to undergo a process called autophagy - the breakdown that occurs when the cell essentially self-digests. The research, which appears in the April edition of US-published Journal of Clinical Investigation, demonstrates that THC and related "cannabinoids" appear to be "a new family of potential antitumoral agent." The authors wrote that the chemical may prove useful in the development of future "antitumoral agents." The scientists conducted their research on mice, first stimulating the growth of cancer in the lab animals, then injecting them with a daily dose of THC near the site of their tumors. The researchers also analyzed the tumors of two patients in an experimental trial looking at the effects of THC on a highly aggressive form of brain tumor, and saw findings "in line with the preclinical evidence" first observed in the laboratory mice.
joe the plumber? more like joe the keating family operative from crooks & liars: I guess it's no wonder John McCain was so happy to use "Joe the Plumber" as a debate prop last night - he's a partisan Republican who also happens to be a member of McCain's old friends, the Keating family.
From Martin Eisenstadt: "Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years."
Now I guess we know why Joe is telling the press that Obama is a "socialist" and that the Obama tax plan "infuriated" him. After all, it would hit families like the Keatings and their minions the hardest. Not to mention that Obama's economic-recovery plan would put the crimps on influence peddlers like McCain's old friends, the Keating Five. But he sure made for a good one-day story.
US officials may have uncovered attempted voter fraud less than a month before US election
white powder causes evacuation of obama office from raw replay: Fox 29 News reported: “There was a scare Tuesday at the South Philadelphia campaign headquarters of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. The office at 15th and Christian streets was filled with volunteers around 5 p.m. when one of them brought in the mail and opened a letter that had a note and a powdery substance on it that immediately set off alarms... Examining the letter, investigators determined the substance was just harmless brown sugar. The all-clear was given by 5:50 p.m.”
biden routes campaign cash to family, their firms from washington times: Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. has paid more than $2 million in campaign cash to his family members, their businesses and employers over the years, a practice that watchdogs criticize as rife with potential conflicts of interest. The money largely flowed from the coffers of Mr. Biden's failed presidential campaign during the past two years to a company that employs his sister and longtime campaign manager, Valerie Biden Owens, according to campaign disclosure filings. The senator from Delaware also directed campaign legal work to a Washington lobbying and law firm founded by his son R. Hunter Biden, the disclosures show.
‘barack osama’ appears on hundreds of absentee ballots in ny from thinkprogress: The Albany Times Union reports today that Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) “last name is spelled ‘Osama’ on hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters in Rensselaer County,” New York. Both Democratic and Republican county election officials insist the error was a “honest mistake” and a “typo,” but the paper notes that “the letters ’s’ and ‘b’ are not exactly keyboard neighbors.” During the Democratic primary, Obama’s first name was misspelled on approximately 2000 absentee ballots in Florida.
biden's botox from washington post: Joe Biden looks . . . different. Something about his eyes, which seem smaller, and his forehead, which seems smoother. Compared with images from last year, he seems better rested -- yet also, strangely, a little sleepier... Karen Bradley, a University of Maryland professor who studies politicians' body movement and what it conveys to voters, says it's "a little strange that nothing moves from his eyes on up" -- since she otherwise finds Biden a compelling communicator who powerfully telegraphs his conviction on a topic via other body language. Barry Cohen, a Rockville plastic surgeon, is more blunt. "He clearly has had Botox," the doctor, a Republican, told us. "The lines are gone on his forehead. There is no way makeup or surgery could do that."
obama joined socialist 3rd party in 90s from blogger news: Democratic candidate Barack Obama was a member of the socialist New Party during the 1990s, according to new evidence unearthed by web bloggers, receiving the party’s endorsement for his state Senate run in 1996. Reports earlier this summer that Obama was associated with the New Party were vigorously denied by the Obama campaign and the New Party, but researchers examining Internet archives have found New Party documents clearly indicating Obama was a member of the party, received its endorsement, encouraged Party members to work with him in the Illinois statehouse, and signed a contract agreeing to maintain a relationship with the Marxist-led party during his senate term. The New Party was active in the United States from 1992 to 1998, and was strongly affiliated with Marxist and socialist organizations including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
obama files to delay discovery in citizenship challenge from total411: Here is the full motion PDF filed by Obama / DNC (1.2mb PDF) Here is the press release from thr people's plaintiff at ObamaCrimes.com: "Philip J. Berg, Esquire, the Attorney who filed suit against Barack H. Obama challenging Senator Obama’s lack of 'qualifications' to serve as President of the United States, announced today that Obama and Democratic National Committee [DNC] filed a Joint Motion for Protective Order to Stay Discovery Pending a Decision on the Motion to Dismiss (which was) filed on 09/24/08." While legal, Berg stated he is “outraged as this is another attempt to hide the truth from the public; it is obvious that documents do not exist to prove that Obama is qualified to be President.” The case is Berg v. Obama, No. 08-cv-04083.
did ayers ghostwrite obama's book? from worldnetdaily: Prior to 1990, when Barack Obama contracted to write Dreams From My Father, he had written very close to nothing. As an undergraduate, Obama had written what he justifiably calls some "very bad poetry." He published nothing under his own name in The Harvard Law Review, where he served as an editor and as president. And after leaving Harvard, he published nothing in its review or in any law journal. Then, in 1995, this untested 33 year-old produced what Time Magazine has called - with a straight face - "the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician." The public is asked to believe Obama wrote this on his own. I do not buy this canard for a minute, not at all. In writing a book on intellectual fraud, Hoodwinked, I developed an eye for literary humbug, and Dreams serves up an eyeful.
the obama/weatherman logo from total411: The Obama campaign has taken to designing differentiated versions of its logo for different identity groups. One website, Logobama.com, even offers anyone the chance to design your own Obama logo. Some have commented on the similarity between the logo for the terrorist group the Weathermen (co-founded by Obama's friend Bill Ayers), to the logo for the Obama campaign. We at Total411.info have used the good offices of Logobama.com to create the following Obama/Weatherman hybrid logo, so all the Weathermen supporters of Obama can show their pride. Also check out the unadulterated Obama logo and the Weatherman logo as it appears on the cover of Ayers' book for comparison purposes.
mccain addresses crowd as ‘my fellow prisoners’ from thinkprogress: The Jed Report notes that in a rally today, Sen. John McCain referred to his audience as “my fellow prisoners“: "Across this country, this is the agenda I have set before my fellow prisoners. And the same standards of clarity and candor must now be applied to my opponent."
olbermann slams mccain’s connections to bonafide eugenicists, racists & fascists from infowars: Partisan Keith Olbermann argues that if Obama is attacked for his connections to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Weatherman William Ayers, then the corrupt connections of John McCain, including bonified racists, fascists and eugenicists, also deserve to come under fire. Olbermann names the U.S. Council for World Freedom and a number of controversial fellow board members connected to McCain.
palin abused power in troopergate firing from ap: Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative panel concluded Friday. The politically charged inquiry imperiled her reputation as a reformer on John McCain's Republican ticket. Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report to a bipartisan panel that looked into the matter, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.

wwf stagematch, round2: obama & mccain wage counterinsurgency from danger room: Last night's debate was supposed to be all about the economy, or about who had the scummier friends. But more than a few rounds of the showdown in Nashville were devoted to military matters -- specifically, on how best to wage a counterinsurgency in Afghanistan and Pakistan. John McCain repeated his call to broadly use the Iraq blueprint on the Afghan front:
"Now, General Petraeus had a strategy, the same strategy -- very, very different, because of the conditions and the situation -- but the same fundamental strategy that succeeded in Iraq. And that is to get the support of the people."
Obama didn't sound all that much different. He put a bit more emphasis on pouring more troops into Afghanistan, "because our bases and outposts are now targets for more aggressive... Taliban." He talked about "eliminat[ing] some of the drug trafficking that's funding terrorism" there. And he said that Afghanistan's political leaders had to be brought into the process. "You are going to have to do better by your people in order for us to gain the popular support that's necessary," Obama recently told Afghan president Hamid Karzai.
In essence, both Obama and McCain were quoting from the military's now-famous counterinsurgency manual, which talks about the people being the center of gravity for these sorts of campaigns. The old-style bombs-and-bullets operations have their place, of course. But the key to stabilizing a country is allowing the people to lead "normal, social, economic, political lives," as McCain noted.
It's certainly a far cry from the debates of 2000, when then-Governor George W. Bush said, "I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. I think our troops ought to be used to fight and win war. I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow [a] dictator when it's in our best interests."
One could even argue that last night represented kind of a capstone victory for the U.S. military's cadre of counterinsurgency-focused thinkers. For years, they've been clashing with the armed forces' more traditional strategists, who think the future of conflict lies in big wars with conventional adversaries. In the debate, both Obama and McCain passed up on the chance to declare a new Cold War with Russia. They were too focused on the insurgency in Afghanistan and Pakistan to bother.
mccain linked to iran-contra, ‘nazi collaborators,’ & ‘right-wing death squads’ from newsbusters: On Tuesday, an Associated Press article featured on MSNBC.com and briefly as a top headline on the popular internet homepage MSN.com was titled: "McCain linked to group in Iran-Contra case." The subtitle read: "Organization had ties to former Nazi collaborators, right-wing death squads." The article attacked a group founded by retired U.S. General John Singlaub: "The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe." The AP appears to be getting its story tips from the Obama campaign, as Boston Globe deputy national political editor, Foon Rhee, reported: "The Obama camp today is sending around reports on Singlaub, founder of the US Council for World Freedom, which was involved in the Iran-Contra scandal during the mid-1980s and was criticized for supposed links to Nazi collaborators and right-wing death squads in Central America." The AP article justified reporting on the tenuous McCain connection by explaining: "McCain's ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago."
fbi raids investigates obama's friend's home from washington times: (Editor's note: The original version of this article has been corrected. The office of Larry D. Walsh was not raided.)
The FBI is investigating a former Illinois state senator who is a poker-playing buddy of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama. According to Chicago authorities, the FBI visited the offices in Joliet, Ill., of a Will County auditor to ask questions about Larry Walsh, a longtime friend of Mr. Obama's, and his chief of staff Matt Ryan. Mr. Walsh, who served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2005, was endorsed by Mr. Obama in his county executive election bid. With the support of some of Mr. Obama's U.S. Senate volunteers, he easily defeated incumbent Republican Joseph Mikan. Will County auditor Steve Weber confirmed that his office had been asked by the FBI to assist in an investigation, but he did not elaborate on the specifics. Two FBI agents out of Chicago reportedly spent more than an hour in the Will County offices on Wednesday morning.
nader challenges obama & mccain to visit mosque before elections from votenader.org: Ralph Nader will be holding a news conference Friday, October 3 at 11 a.m. outside the Grand Mosque Islamic Center in Washington DC where he will challenge Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain to visit a mosque, like they have churches and synagogues, before the November election as a show of respect and tolerance. Nader recently wrote a letter to Obama and McCain asking the men to act on such a request.
“As you know, discriminatory acts against Muslim-Americans have soared in recent years. They emanate from stereotyping, ethnic profiling, bigotry and, unfortunately, actions by some local, state & federal officials. The documentation is broad and deep on this unfortunate situation that spreads fear and anxiety among millions of Muslim-Americans… Out of respect for Muslim-Americans who have served in all the dimensions of our society from the professions to the armed forces, from the trades to the arts and sciences, from blue collar to white collar work, while raising their children to surpass their own achievements as befits the American horizon, we urge you to visit a Mosque before November 4, 2008.”
satire video: gunman kills 15 potential swing voters from the onion: The Obama campaign is cautiously optimistic after initial reports indicated that most of the people killed were registered Republicans.
from kansas city star: A two-state solution is needed, Sarah Palin says in talking about the future of Israel. A McCain-Palin administration would work with Israel. Joe Biden said he was Israel's biggest friend. And he called President Bush's policy had been a horrible "failure." It has not kept the peace, Biden accurately noted. In fact, he said, the enemies of Israel have been strengthened by the Bush administration's failures. Palin, asked if the administration had failed Israel, said no. But it's good that "we both love Israel," Palin pointed out, almost needlessly. Palin then went into a riff on America's future, saying, "Change is coming." What in the world is she talking about? Biden again pounced, saying he had not heard how McCain's policy "would be any different" from the policies of Bush toward Israel, Pakistan and other countries.
obamccain clash over iraniraq in first debate from dpa: Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain clashed in their first debateFriday night over the war in Iraq and whether the next person to occupy the White House should meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The two candidates disagreed sharply over the future course in Iraq, with Obama pitching his plan to set a timeframe for withdrawing most US combat forces from Iraq. McCain charged that any premature pullout would allow Iraq to slide into chaos and endanger US interests in the region. 'You were wrong,' Obama told McCain, who supported President George W Bush's decision to invade Iraq in March 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein's regime. McCain sought to emphasize Obama's lack of experience by saying that some of the foreign policies his opponent advocates are 'naive' and 'dangerous.'

tell the truth about obama in missouri & go to jail from kurt nimmo: In Missouri, if you “lie” about Barack Obama the cops may arrest you. “The effort appeared to be part of a move by the Obama campaign to block advertisements to which it objects. The campaign also sent ‘threatening’ letters to several news agencies in Pennsylvania and Ohio demanding they stop airing ads exposing Obama’s gun stance, according to the National Rifle Association,” writes WorldNetDaily, never mind Obama is a gun-grabber who claims to support the Second Amendment.
fox tries to coverup mccain’s role in keating five from raw story: The Keating Five scandal, and John McCain's role in it, has received relatively little mention in presidential campaign coverage, and at least one Fox News host seems dedicated to keeping it that way. Appearing Thursday morning on Fox & Friends, radio host Mike Papantonio tried to remind viewers about McCain's intervention with federal regulators on behalf of real estate mogul Charles Keating, who was trying to avoid regulations of a savings and loan he owned during the S&L crisis of the 1980s. F&F's Steve Doocy told Papantonio to "pipe down," called him "rude" and demanded he "cut it out." A show producer could be overheard saying "cut his mike." As Papantonio tries one last time to explain the details of the Keating Five scandal, Doocy again cuts him off. "This is not the History Channel," he says.
bush does 9/11 replay in ask for unprecedented powers & budget from the washington note: Just after the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred, George W. Bush went before the nation and made the case that he needed unprecedented authority - budgetary and military - to take on the threats poised at the well-being and safety of the country. Now with the current economic crisis in the United States, Bush is yet again asking for unprecedented powers and budget. What happened after 9/11? We saw no-bid contracts given to firms like Halliburton. We saw $9 billion of U.S. taxpayer money "go missing" through the Coalition Provisional Authority. We saw abuses of power, the expansion of secrecy, and the promulgation of norms that seemed to be the very antithesis of what America stands for. A nation's values and its deep DNA are really only knowable and observable during times of crisis - when it's tough to stand up for codes that seem a heavy burden during tough times. We are in a crisis again - and the Bush administration is again asking Americans to forgo fundamental values. Tonight, George Bush succeeded I think in scaring Americans that this crisis could be a systemic threat. Bush said "our entire economy is in danger." That's the fear button. He pushed it. And he said the clock was ticking. This seems like a bad episode of "24."
3 stooges meet at white house & act like the run something from raw replay: President Bush met with Congressional leaders, Barack Obama and John McCain at the White House. This video is from Fox’s Your World with Neil Cavuto, broadcast September 25, 2008.
1000s contact lawmakers about 'bailout' plan from wcco: As Congressional leaders have worked out an outline for a deal on the bailout, the proposal remains extremely unpopular with many Minnesotans. In a Minneapolis coffee shop, single mother Ann Pearson thinks the bailout is helping the wrong people. "It's the people like me that are having a hard time keeping up with the economy and paying their bills, and we're losing our houses and losing our cars. And we need the government to help us not the bigger people," she said. Congressional offices are getting bombarded with phone calls and e-mails from constituents with their opinions on the bailout deal. Minnesota Congressman Jim Ramstad said in 48 hours he has gotten 1,002 calls and e-mails against bailout; only 10 were in favor of it. "People are angry, people are angry at the administrations bailout plan, they are angry at rewarding incompetence and bad judgment," Ramstad said.
deal said to be near in financial 'bailout' from ap: President Bush is bringing presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain into negotiations on a $700 billion rescue of Wall Street as Democrats and Republicans near agreement on a bailout plan with more protections for taxpayers and new help for distressed homeowners. Senior lawmakers and Bush administration officials have cleared away key obstacles to a deal on the unprecedented rescue, agreeing to include widely supported limits on pay packages for executives whose companies benefit.
bush & mccain blackmail america w/ economic terrorism from paul joseph watson: From shying away from even mentioning such terms as “recession,” “unemployment” or “bank failures,” Bush, Bernanke and Paulson are now vigorously invoking the fear of financial meltdown as part of a campaign of economic terror to blackmail the American people into accepting the power-grabbing “bailout,” while John McCain, who last week said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, is now all but threatening to cancel the election should the proposal not receive swift passage. Bush’s speech last night was a throwback to his March 2003 stump before the invasion of Iraq - replace words like “weapons of mass destruction” with “financial panic” and the tone of the two is not dissimilar. Bush rammed home the fear by appealing to people’s personal anxieties.
china banks told to stop lending to US banks from reuters: Chinese regulators have told domestic banks to stop interbank lending to U.S. financial institutions to prevent possible losses during the financial crisis, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday. The Hong Kong newspaper cited unidentified industry sources as saying the instruction from the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) applied to interbank lending of all currencies to U.S. banks but not to banks from other countries. "The decree appears to be Beijing's first attempt to erect defences against the deepening U.S. financial meltdown after the mainland's major lenders reported billions of U.S. dollars in exposure to the credit crisis," the SCMP said. A spokesman for the CBRC had no immediate comment.

citizens dumping personal junk on wall st to protest bailout from alternet: An e-mail that began as a rallying cry from a lone journalist to an influential circle of friends to protest the U.S. government bailout of Wall Street has ignited a national day of street protests. Some demonstrators plan to dump their rubbish in front of the bronze bull sculpture near Wall Street in downtown Manhattan Thursday. "People are going to bring their own personal junk that they think is worth as much as the junk financial instruments that the government is proposing to buy from the Wall Street banks," says Andrew Boyd, an activist and freelance online-video artist for nonprofit groups in Manhattan. "We're hoping that people show up with their 8-track cassette collections, their old Spice Girl CDs, their surf boards that got bit by sharks and old Enron stock certificates."
meltdown perpetrators position themselves from scoop: Well, they finally did it. The Money Party exposed the nauseating underbelly of first world finance. It's a cross between a Ponzi scheme and a complex math puzzle, all geared to let those in charge rake off as much money as they can, whenever they can, while they leave us out in the cold. Unfortunately, this time their greed and lack of control has the world poised for a systemic economic meltdown. The collapse and subsequent government rescue of home mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, stock brokerage Merrill Lynch, investment bank Bear Stearns, and, an insurance company, AIG, are designed to show we're moving away from the brink of disaster to a safer place. "The system is working" to manage what Alan Greenspan is calling a once in a century event.
alleged 9/11 conspirator sparks war court standoff from mcclatchy: Alleged 9/11 go-between Ramzi bin al Shibh refused to leave his prison camp cell Monday, triggering a clash on how to hold a pretrial hearing in the complex conspiracy case for which prosecutors seek the death penalty. The standoff produced an eerie scene at the war court. Confessed mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed sat at the lead defense table amiably chatting across the state-of-the-art courtroom with three of his alleged co-conspirators. White noise broadcast through war court speakers made the alleged terrorists' conversations inaudible. All four former CIA-held captives compliantly wore the white uniforms of the prison camp. Mohammed, who at his June arraignment said he welcomed martyrdom, could be plainly seen in a massive gray-speckled beard sitting at the defendants table. He sported a white turban with black trim. Meantime, behind the scenes, prosecutors were working through Defense Department bureaucracy to see whether they could get an order to have bin al Shibh forced out of his cell and into the war court, said Air Force Maj. Gail Crawford, a military commissions spokeswoman.
gitmo judge enlists help from 9/11 mastermind from ap: Confessed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed offered Monday to help persuade one of his co-defendants to leave his prison cell for a pretrial hearing at Guantanamo Bay. Mohammed volunteered to reach out to Ramzi Binalshibh after the military judge overseeing the case suggested that he might offer a separate trial for Binalshibh, who has refused to appear with his four co-defendants in America's most important war-crimes trial since the close of World War II. Judge Ralph Kohlmann, a Marine colonel, permitted Mohammed and the other co-defendants to send notes to Binalshibh. If the Yemeni still refuses to appear in court on Tuesday morning, Binalshibh will be dragged from his cell, Kohlmann said. "It is my hope that perhaps we can avoid the need for a forcible bringing of him here," the judge said.
additions to 9/11 timeline as of sept 21: united 93, 9/11 commission from history commons: About half of this week's new entries concern United Airlines Flight 93. The airline's operations centre sent a message to the plane's co-pilot some minutes before the hijacking, but received no reply; it also notified flights of a crash at the WTC around 9:03 but did not send a warning about possible hijackings at this time. The airline's dispatchers were asked to warn flights at 9:21, the same time Flight 93 sent a routine message to one of the dispatchers. A couple of minutes later, it checked in with Cleveland air traffic control; the pilots then sent their last last message at 9:27.
Learning of potential problems on board, United tried to contact the plane at 9:31, and then sent a message to all flights, including flight 93, telling them to secure their cockpits. Dispatchers learned flight 93 was heading towards Washington at 9:36 and offered assistance, and a dispatcher issued another warning about securing the cockpit at 9:40. United's attempt to implement the lockout procedure for flight 93 failed at about 9:50, at the same time a dispatcher told Flight 93 to land at the nearest airport and was informed the flight may have been hijacked.
A few minutes after it crashed, a message was sent to the plane telling it not to divert to Washington, and none of the passengers relatives went to the airport it was scheduled to arrive at in San Francisco to meet the passengers. In 2007, a German television program was denied permission to film the wreckage.
Regarding the other flights, American Airlines ordered all its flights to land immediately at 9:15, and a dispatcher notified United flights of a ground stop in New York at 9:08. United ordered no new take offs for any international flights around 9:20, and a dispatcher sent a warning to Flight 175 at 9:23, several minutes after it hit the WTC.
There are also a number of entries regarding the 9/11 Commission. Most importantly, as the commission was just beginning its work in early 2003, Executive Director Philip Zelikow had already completed an outline of its final report. Also early on in the inquiry, the commission decided it would not bother with subpoenas, which left Commissioner Max Cleland disappointed. Later on, CIA Director George Tenet heard a false rumor the commission was to call for his firing, and got White House Chief of Staff Andy Card to plead with the commissioners for his job.
additions to 9/11 timeline as of sept 28: pentagon on 9/11, shoe bombing, bin laden in the soviet-afghan war & more from history commons: This week, a massive amount of new entries have been added to the timeline, dealing with a whole range of different issues. We will start with the day of 9/11, in particular the Pentagon, which a fire chief warned could be a target nearly 20 minutes before it was hit. The attack itself created confusion by setting off 300 fire alarms, although some medical workers thought the ensuing evacuation was a drill. After wandering about outside the building, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld refused to follow the established emergency plan and evacuate, instead sending deputy Paul Wolfowitz to an alternate military command center, where the computers and communication systems did not work.
There is also a group of entries about Congressional leaders' actions on 9/11. It was clear the Capitol was a possible target from around 9:00, but it was not evacuated until later. After the evacuation, some members of Congress established a Central Command Center, but others went home. Some were flown to a secure bunker outside the capital, from which Vice President Dick Cheney instructed them not to return to Washington. They finally summoned up the courage to do so anyway in the early evening, after agreeing to reconvene the next day.
Another topic that has received more coverage is the 2001 attempted shoe bombing. Zacarias Moussaoui, one of the many "20th hijackers," met one of the bombers, Richard Reid, at a London mosque in 1996. Reid also met an al-Qaeda recruiter at London's Finsbury Park mosque, which was run by British intelligence informer Abu Hamza al-Masri and also attended by Nizar Trabelsi, another operative who went on to be involved in the shoe bombing. A few months before the attempting bombing, Reid cased targets in Israel.
The US was monitoring calls between an al-Qaeda communications hub in Yemen and a top associate of the shoe bombers, leading to his arrest. That, in turn, led to Trabelsi's arrest, and that led to the arrest of a group of Algerians in Spain. All the plots Trabelsi was involved in were halted--except the shoe bombing, which was not cancelled even after his arrest was revealed in the international press.
There are also a few more entries about the Bojinka plot. One of the plotters, Abdul Hakim Murad, was allegedly tortured by Philippine police after his arrest and was then rendered to the US, as was lead plotter Ramzi Yousef. Another of the bombers, Wali Khan Amin Shah, mysteriously escaped from a Philippine jail, but was recaptured a few months later and also rendered to the US.
The recent seventh anniversary of the attacks was the occasion for the expression of some skepticism about what has come to be known as the "official account" of 9/11. A member of the European Parliament called for an international tribunal to reassess the attacks, a former Syrian minister said the US may have committed them itself, and a controversial documentary was shown on Russian television.
Regarding the hijackers' DNA, the coroner handling the Flight 93 investigation received a call from a person who represented himself as one of the hijackers' relatives in 2002, but the remains of 13 hijackers are still in US custody. Remains of the other six alleged hijackers have not been found.
truth videos targeted on youtube from nufff respect: (Editor’s note: This malicious activity appears to be a government op to discredit and take down truth YouTube accounts, although there is no direct evidence of this. “The Defense Dept. places a high-value on controlling information,” writes Mike Whitney. The Pentagon’s Information Operations Roadmap considers the internet “an enemy weapons system” that must be confronted by way of “virtual warfare” and resulting in “full spectrum dominance.”)
For all our sakes, this video desperately needs to go viral, so please, if you have any videos on your channel, add a few of them as a video response. Please also rate, favorite, and leave as many comments as you can. That way, this vid will reach the most-viewed lists and get seen by YouTube, and then they’ll have to do something about it. This is the only way we’re gonna expose this fraudster and stop him from ruining it for everyone else. Otherwise we’re all doomed. Every truth channel is relying on you now folks. It’s in your hands.
the 9/11 movement is alive, well & kicking in nyc & beyond! from jerry mazza: On Thursday, 9/11/08, WeAreChange.org and the ncy911 Ballot Initiative group joined forces at Ground Zero. Read all about them at the above links. I joined them about 11:30a.m. for the march and speeches that would begin around noon. The young WeAreChange leader Luke Rudkowski (a force unto himself) and the indefatigable Ballot Initiative leader Les Jamieson were there to kick off events. If I had apprehensions about the march, they were eased by the people I met. Optimistic, well informed, open, they were ready to face a harassing lunatic fringe and/or provocateurs with a healthy dose of humor or equal edge. Believe it or not, the legion of cops seemed bent on protecting us as well. Perhaps after seven years of listening to 9/11 Truth some had sunk in. Also, WeAreChange’s special fund-raising effort, “First Responders First,” made friends on the blue side as well with firemen and EMTs.
7yrs later, 9/11 hijackers' remains are in limbo from nytimes: (Editor's Note: If I had a nickel for every time we have been told about the "ongoing investigation" of 9/11 as being the reason why we can't have access to information, I would be a rich man.)
Seven years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the remains of 13 of the 19 men responsible have been identified and are in the custody of the F.B.I. and the New York City medical examiner’s office. But no one has formally requested the remains in order to bury them. “Politically, one can understand that this is a hot potato,” said Muneer Fareed, secretary general of the Islamic Society of North America and a former professor of Islamic studies. “People don’t want to identify with the political equivalent of Jeffrey Dahmer.” What would happen if someone asked for the hijackers’ remains is not clear. Neither the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which holds the remains of the nine hijackers whose planes hit the Pentagon and crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pa., nor the New York City medical examiner’s office, which holds the remains of 4 of the 10 hijackers who flew planes into the World Trade Center buildings, has policies to deal with such a request. “If and when it comes up, we’ll address it then,” an F.B.I. spokesman, Richard Kolko, said. The bureau could turn down such requests, Mr. Kolko said, because the Sept. 11 investigation is an open case.
new al-CIAda tape surfaces despite US efforts to block it
from abc: Al Qaeda's annual September 11 propaganda video surfaced today, delayed eight days by a concerted US effort to block it. The tape showed no new pictures or statements from Osama bin Laden, although an al Qaeda figure was interviewed saying bin Laden was in "good health." Al Qaeda also showed a video it said was captured from a US bounty hunter, Keith "Jack" Idema, as he appeared to threaten to kill an Afghani citizen during an interrogation.
update: canadian mp ditches candidate over remarks about 9/11 from ctv: Stephane Dion began his day defending Lesley Hughes over accusations of anti-Semitism. But by lunchtime Friday the Liberal leader had unceremoniously dumped the Winnipeg-area candidate in an abrupt move that seemed as much about removing the tarnish of intolerance from the party brand as it did with buffing his leadership image.
Hughes later described herself as a "lifelong friend and supporter of the Jewish community in Winnipeg." Nonetheless, she apologized for the "perception" that she is anti-Semitic. But the apology wasn't enough for her party leader.
"The Liberal party's commitment to tolerance and multiculturalism is paramount," Dion said in a statement. "I have reviewed the past comments of Lesley Hughes and it is clear they do not meet this standard. While I appreciate her apology, I cannot condone those sentiments in any way. I have therefore asked Ms. Hughes to step down as the Liberal party candidate in Kildonan-St. Paul."
