Future Riots 'May Be' Controlled With Chemicals
from guardian: Future riots could be quelled by projectiles containing chemical irritants fired by police using new weapons that are now in the final stages of development. The Discriminating Irritant Projectile (Dip) has been under development by the Home Office’s centre for applied science and technology (Cast) as a potential replacement for plastic bullets.
Documents obtained by the Guardian reveal that last summer’s riots in England provided a major impetus to Home Office research into new-generation riot control technology, ranging from the Dip to even more curious weaponry described by Cast technicians as “skunk oil”.
The briefing by Cast for the Police Service of Northern Ireland says that last year’s disorder sparked a surge of ideas to the Home Office from the public as well as companies manufacturing police technology. To capitalise on the interest, Cast convened a “brainstorming” event in October. Participants included police from London and Northern Ireland, the Police Federation, the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
“No ideas too stupid or ‘off the wall’ to consider,” the briefing notes record.

whistleblower alleges sec illegally destroyed documents
from nytimes: An enforcement lawyer at the Securities and Exchange Commission says that the agency illegally destroyed files and documents related to thousands of early-stage investigations over the last 20 years, according to information released Wednesday by Congressional investigators. The destroyed files comprise records of at least 9,000 preliminary inquiries into matters involving notorious individuals like Bernard L. Madoff, as well as several major Wall Street firms that later were the subject of scrutiny after the 2008 financial crisis, including Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Citigroup and Bank of America. The S.E.C. is the very agency that is charged with making sure that Wall Street firms retain records of their own activities, and has brought numerous enforcement cases against firms for failing to do so.related econocrash updates:

from 'flash mob' to 'flash rob': 5 things to know about crime waves
military.com says flash mob attacks 'the new terrorism'
from ibtimes: A flash mob in Germantown, Maryland robbed a local 7-Eleven store in under one minute Saturday night. Surveillance footage of the incident shows a group of teenagers walking wordlessly into the convenience store. They are followed seconds later by a stream of people, presumably juveniles, many covering their faces with shirts and hoods. The group walks around the store, taking as much as possible, before leaving 40 seconds later.
Montgomery County Police believe the event was organized online, likely on Facebook. A total of 28 individuals were captured in the videotape, and investigators say they have identified about half of them. The video was posted online, and many members of the community came forward with tips.
Flash mobs aren't new, nor are they unique to Maryland. They are an increasingly frequent trend that often have severe results, and townships and police departments around the country are trying to figure out how to combat the problem.

video: sultry drama continues after seal team 6 assassinated*
from nytimes: In the days after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Pakistan’s intelligence service probably allowed Chinese military engineers to examine the wreckage of a stealth American helicopter that crashed during the operation, according to American officials and others familiar with the classified intelligence assessments... American officials cautioned that they did not yet have definitive proof that the Chinese were allowed to visit to Abbottabad... Several Pakistani officials reached on Sunday declined to comment. weekend war losses in afghanistan worst ever for US empire
seal team six destroyed to cover up osama execution hoax?
from allgov: America’s elite Navy SEALs have again borne the worst of the Afghanistan war for the U.S. military, losing 22 commandoes on Saturday in the single deadliest day since the conflict began almost ten years ago... Most of the SEALS were part of Team 6, the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden. However, according to the Pentagon, none of the men killed over the weekend took part in the bin Laden raid. There is no way to confirm this because the U.S. has kept secret the names of the men involved in the bin Laden killing in order to protect them from direct retaliation.

violent protest shakes troubled london district after police shooting
'panic on the streets of london, burn down the disco': tottenham cars & bldgs ablaze as 26 cops hurt & 42 arrested*
from voanews: Several British police officers were injured and a number of people arrested when rioting broke out late Saturday in a depressed district of London, Britain's capital. A protest over the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man by police on Thursday that started peacefully suddenly turned violent. Several buildings, cars and a double-decker bus were set on fire before order was restored. The crowd numbering in the hundreds also broke shop windows and looted stores, pushing carts full of stolen goods down the streets of the Tottenham district of north London. Police are now patrolling the district with concern of more trouble later on Sunday. The rioting was the worst London has seen in years. Tottenham, home to a large number of ethnic minorities, has a history of racial tensions. It was the scene in 1985 of one of the most violent riots in Britain's history during which a police officer was hacked to death when Afro-Caribbean youths in a deprived housing estate of Tottenham went on a rampage.

obamessiah threatens 'armageddon', warns US 'running out of time'
meanwhile, moody's suggests US eliminate debt ceiling...
from afp: US President Barack Obama pressed polarized lawmakers Saturday to avert what he called economic "Armageddon" by quickly forging a deal to prevent an early August debt default by the world's richest country. "Simply put, it will take a balanced approach, shared sacrifice, and a willingness to make unpopular choices on all our parts," Obama said in his weekly radio address. "That means spending less on domestic programs," the president explained. "It means spending less on defense programs. ... And it means taking on the tax code, and cutting out certain tax breaks and deductions for the wealthiest Americans." The US government reached its debt limit of $14.29 trillion in May, and since then the Treasury Department has used special measures to allow the government to keep paying its bills. But unless the limit is raised by August 2, the Treasury says, growing spending and debt service commitments will force a default, which would have disastrous ripple effects throughout the global financial system.

cia/cfr envoy frank g. wisner sent to 'speak to mubarak'
from washington post: When it was time to give Egypt's embattled leader a gentle nudge, President Obama picked a seasoned diplomat who could deliver the message as a close friend. Frank G. Wisner, a former U.S. ambassador to Cairo, has known Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for decades and has long advocated strong U.S. ties with him.The White House dispatched Wisner to Cairo to "add his perspective to our analysis on current developments," as State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley put it on Monday. Within 24 hours of Wisner's private chat with the Egyptian president, Mubarak had announced on state television that he would step down at the end of his current term.
Details of Wisner's conversation with Mubarak were not disclosed, but an administration official said the envoy sought to impress upon the leader the need both to declare he would not seek reelection and to step aside immediately in favor of a transitional government.
Former U.S. government officials who have worked with Wisner, 72, said the retired diplomat developed a close relationship with Mubarak during his assignment in Egypt as ambassador from 1986 to 1991.
After his retirement from the State Department, Wisner worked for Patton Boggs, a Washington lobbying firm that has represented Egypt in the past. He also served on the board of Egypt's largest bank, Commercial International Bank Egypt SAE.
It was not the first time that a U.S. administration had called on Wisner to intervene in a foreign crisis. In 2005, the George W. Bush administration appointed the New York native as a special U.S. representative to international talks on Kosovo's future. The negotiations ended with Kosovo's declaration of independence.
Wisner is the son of the well-known U.S. intelligence officer Frank Wisner Sr., who joined the Office of Strategic Services - the CIA's predecessor - and was partly the inspiration for the character Edward Wilson in the 2006 film "The Good Shepherd."

davos elite say china the model for new economic world order
from afp: Power in the global economy is shifting from the advanced world to Asia as recovery takes hold, Davos analysts said Wednesday, as political and business elites began their annual meeting. “What is really happening is a slowdown of the western world and the growth of the emerging markets. This is a complete shift in the balance of power,” Azim Premji, chairman of Indian software major Wipro, told the opening panel. “In 10 years, the economy of the emerging world will be … equal or slightly larger than the US economy,” added the billionaire at the World Economic Forum. China’s highest ranking official at the International Monetary Fund, Zhu Min, said that global recovery was still being driven predominantly by Asian giants India and China.related econocrash updates:

mayhem spreads in tunisia as curfew decreed
from nytimes: The government of Tunisia scrambled alternately to appease and to crush growing unrest on Wednesday as a three-week-old wave of violent demonstrations spread for the first time to the capital, where swarms of protesters called for the ouster of the authoritarian president, Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. The protesters came together after circulating calls to rally over online networks like Facebook and twitter.com. Many were unemployed college graduates, and they angrily demanded more jobs and denounced what they called the self-enrichment of Tunisia’s ruling family. Army units and riot police were deployed around the city around dawn in anticipation, and they quickly dispersed protesters with billy clubs, tear gas, and bullets. By late in the day the government decreed a night-time curfew. And there were reports that some relatives of the president were leaving the country for their own safety. At one of several demonstrations, witnesses reported that the security forces had shot and killed four protesters. Some said the army had used rooftop snipers to fire on the crowd. Rights groups said they had confirmed more than 30 deaths before the day began, all in skirmishes with police over the last several days. “How can you fire on your own people?” said a 30-year-old business owner taking refuge from police as they broke up a protest near the French Embassy and train station downtown. “If you do that, then there is no return. Now you are a killer.” He declined to provide his name for fear of reprisals.

ground zero: systemic failure a heartbeat away
thanks to zero point radio for new ground zero archives!
from clyde lewis: When I am not doing radio I have been doing work as an internet marketing consultant providing people with front page listings on Google. It is great job when the money comes and a waste of a day when nothing comes in. Lately I have been doing my business calls in Florida and Georgia.
Most of the areas I have been calling are far from the effects of the oil spill. When I start calling people that live closer to the Gulf coast the more I get disconnected phone numbers or answering services that tell me that the property owners have left the country for Europe. In one instance I was forced to find business in the Ukraine and sold search engine placement there.
I thought it was just a fluke, but anymore I am wondering if people have gotten the message and are “bugging out” of the Gulf States because of the fears of what might happen to them and their families.
