Pop Music Became More Moody in Past 50 Years
Pop Music Study Shows Shift Toward Minor Key Melodies Since 1960*
from scientificamerican.com: We blast the upbeat tunes for parties and workouts at the gym, and we save the low-key ballads for romantic or pensive moments. It’s hardly a new idea that music is intertwined with our emotions. But how have our favorites changed over the decades, and what do these changes say about America’s shifting emotional landscape?
Music is a form of naturalistic data that, much like popular television, literature, and sales of consumer goods, scientists can sample for insight into our minds and values. Researchers E. Glenn Schellenberg and Christian von Scheve set out to examine songs popular in America during the last five decades, using a selection culled from Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 charts. Schellenberg and von Scheve wanted to learn how emotional cues in music, such as tempo (slow to fast) and mode (major or minor key), have changed since 1960.

Study Shows Pop Music Too Loud And All Sounds The Same
from reuters.com: Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same. Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.
A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used. "We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations - roughly speaking chords plus melodies - has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."
They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds. Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier. The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.
The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought. Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

Obama Executive Order Seizes Control Of Communications Systems
Video: Controlling Communications Via Executive Order
from theintelhub.com: President Obama has usurped all available forms of communication for the use and discretion of the US government. Under executive order (EO), Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions, Obama has enabled the executive branch to control communications under all “possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies, and improve national resilience.” Radio and wired communications systems “of all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public must inform the development of national security and emergency preparedness (NS/EP) communications policies, programs, and capabilities.” ... The Presidential Alert was announced in August of 2011, wherein the Commissioners for the FCC required that television, radio stations and cable systems (including satellites) will redirect broadcasting if the President wants to “alert Americans of impending danger”... This latest EO is but one in a long string of presidential shows of authority that lays the foundation for the establishment of a dictatorship in America.

You Can Change the Channel, But Local News Is the Same
Local TV Stations Cut Costs by Sharing News Operations
from nytimes.com: Call a reporter at the CBS television station here (in Texas), and it might be an anchor for the NBC station who calls back. Or it might be the news director who runs both stations’ news operations.
The stations here compete for viewers, but they cooperate in gathering the news — maintaining technically separate ownership, but sharing office space, news video and even the scripts written for their nightly news anchors. That is why viewers see the same segments on car accidents, the same interviews with local politicians, the same high school sports highlights.
The same kind of sharing takes place in dozens of other cities, from Burlington, Vt., where the Fox and ABC stations sometimes share anchors, to Honolulu, where the NBC and CBS stations broadcast the same morning show. The changes have drawn the ire of critics, who charge that there are fewer and fewer journalists actually covering local news. The agreements behind this sharing are also attracting the attention of another group of viewers — federal regulators.
Amid stiff competition for advertising revenue, these agreements are a “survival strategy” for weak stations, said Perry Sook, the chairman and chief executive of Nexstar, which owns the CBS station here, KLST.
The rise of the agreements resembles the retrenchment of the American newspaper industry, but it has been far less publicized.

Led By Oregon's Wyden, Opposition Grows Against Obama's Refusal to Reveal Secret Patriot Act Powers
from allgov.com: Congressional Democrats, the media and civil libertarians are continuing their fight with President Barack Obama over his administration’s secret interpretations of the Patriot Act. Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado, who sit on the Senate Intelligence Committee, wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder last week claiming a classified intelligence operation based on the Patriot Act interpretation is not as critical to national security as the administration says.
Wyden and Udall also wrote that Americans would be “stunned” if they knew what the government was really doing based on the legal theory being employed through the Patriot Act. In October, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Illinois) said that the government’s use of “Section 215 is unfortunately cloaked in secrecy. Some day that cloak will be lifted, and future generations will ask whether our actions today meet the test of a democratic society: transparency, accountability, and fidelity to the rule of law and our Constitution.”
The Department of Justice has insisted that revealing anything about the secret spy program could “cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security of the United States.” Federal lawyers are trying to dismiss two lawsuits, one by The New York Times and the other by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, that seek to force the administration into disclosing how the Patriot Act has been interpreted.

1.8 Million Dead People Currently Registered To Vote
from ibtimes.com: According to statistics released by the Pew Center of the States, at least 1.8 million dead people are currently registered to vote. Additionally, 24 million voter registrations have some serious errors. While there is little suspicion of voter fraud, many people have pointed out the serious consequences of using such a flawed system. One of the biggest problems with voter registration is that Americans are constantly moving across state lines. When they move, they are supposed to alert local election offices so that their previous states can be notified. But very few actually do and as a result, almost 3 million people in the U.S. are registered to vote in more than one state.
Pew has made several suggestions that could mend the current system. One way to improve voter registration would be to implement the system electronically. The voter databases could then be cross-checked against other government databases, such as motor vehicle registries or death records from the Social Security Administration.
Some states are also joining an experimental program that will allow them to share voter information between databases to reduce duplicates. The digital program could ultimately allow for easier voter registration and a much more streamlined registry - an imperative step considering that 52 million eligible voters are not registered to vote in the upcoming presidential elections at the end of this year.

scotus says congress may 're-copyright' public domain works
from threat level: Congress may take books, musical compositions and other works out of the public domain, where they can be freely used and adapted, and grant them copyright status again, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. In a 6-2 ruling, the court said that, just because material enters the public domain, it is not “territory that works may never exit.” (.pdf)
The top court was ruling on a petition by a group of orchestra conductors, educators, performers, publishers and film archivists who urged the justices to reverse an appellate court that ruled against the group, which has relied on artistic works in the public domain for their livelihoods.

west virginia mine owner to pay record fine
video: feds unveil $210m settlement in US mine blast*
from wvrecord: The Justice Department on Tuesday announced an agreement with Alpha Natural Resources totaling nearly $210 million in payments connected to the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine disaster. An explosion on April 5, 2010, claimed the lives of 29 miners at the site, which was then owned by Massey Energy. Alpha took over Massey in a merger earlier this year. The agreement announced Tuesday -- which coincidentally was West Virginia Miner's Day -- is the largest ever for the resolution of a criminal investigation of a mine disaster. A press release from U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says the agreement "addresses only the corporate criminal liability of the former Massey, not potential criminal charges for any individual."

homeland security testing 'pre-crime' detection technology
from allgov: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been secretly working on technology that can tip off law enforcement about those planning to commit a crime. Part profiling, part advanced mathematics, the Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST) is described as a “pre-crime” system by DHS. The program uses ethnicity, gender, breathing, eye tracking and heart rate to formulate a system for spotting criminals before they strike. According to the official description, the prototype contains “a suite of real-time, non-invasive sensor technologies to detect cues indicative of mal-intent (the intent or desire to cause harm).” A classified DHS document reportedly indicated that the controversial idea is already being tested on some members of the public voluntarily. If the technology proves reliable, the government might try using it at airport checkpoints, border crossings, sea ports or major sporting events.
