Oregon Oddities and West Virginia Worry: This Mortal Coil

Dr. Peter Goodwin, Father of OR Suicide Law, Takes Own Life
from oregonlive.com: Peter Goodwin, the first doctor in Oregon to campaign publicly for the terminally ill to obtain medical help in ending their lives, died Sunday shortly after exercising the right he fought to secure. He was 83. Goodwin's four adult children and their spouses surrounded him in his Terwilliger Plaza apartment when he took a planned overdose of a prescribed drug Sunday.

Federal Prisoners in WV Test MP3 Player Program
from wtrf.com: Hundreds of female inmates at a federal prison in West Virginia are testing a program to bring the quality of entertainment behind bars into the 21st century. More than 400 inmates have spent about $70 apiece to buy MP3 players from the commissary in the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson. U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley says the program is essentially a technology update because inmates have been able to buy radios for decades. If it works in West Virginia, it will be rolled out to other federal facilities in late spring or early summer. Billingsley says keeping inmates occupied helps promote safety, particularly in overcrowded prisons where stress, conflict and the risk of violence is high.

hundreds feared dead in turkey earthquake (updated)

from telegraph: As many as 1,000 people are feared dead after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southeastern Turkey, resulting in the collapse of around 50 buildings in the province of Van.

developing/updates...

faint hope for survivors as death toll rises in turkey
from foxnews: Rescuers frantically searched for survivors amid mounds of concrete, twisted steel and construction debris Monday, a day after a 7.2-magnitude quake leveled buildings and killed at least 279 people in eastern Turkey. The search for survivors had continued through the night, with some successes, but officials acknowledged they were powerless to prevent a steep rise in the death toll after Sunday afternoon's earthquake -- the biggest to rock the country in more than a decade.

7.2 quake strikes turkey near elenin alignment date
from the intel hub: A massive M7.2 earthquake hit eastern Turkey today, killing at least 138 people with estimates into the thousands. Buildings and massive structures buckled like rag dolls into twisted metal as highways and roads were reduced to pulp in some areas. It is unknown at this time if the Turkish earthquake has anything to do with ELENIN or another object (coded under ELENIN) entering earth orbit on October 20, 2011, pulling gravitationally on earth. The Intel Hub will be covering this issue leading up to the November 9, 2011 FEMA/FCC takeover drill of all airwaves, and the major ELENIN alignment date.(Psyop Or Not)

as nuclear plants face floods, are we inches away from 'fukushima USA'?

nuke plant close to being totally flooded, but saved - for now
from raw replay: Two U.S. nuclear electricity facilities, the Fort Calhoun and Cooper nuclear plants in Nebraska, are facing the threat of rising flood waters from the Missouri river. Though safety regulators insist the plants were designed to withstand flooding and no risk of disaster exists, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been enforcing a no-fly zone over the Fort Calhoun plant since early this month, even though the plant has been shut down since early April for refueling. That may be due in part to a reportedly minor fire at the plant which temporarily knocked out pumps that inject cool water into a pool of used nuclear fuel — or it may be due to something else entirely. The FAA reportedly told “Big Picture” host Thom Hartmann that it was maintaining the aircraft ban for security reasons, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has insisted there was no danger to people in surrounding areas. But that still begs the question: Why would anyone build a nuclear plant so close to a river - or any other potentially dangerous region?

fema/dhs running 'national level exercise 2011' may16-20

is the new madrid seismic risk real?...
from continuity central: Facilitated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Level Exercise 2011 (NLE 2011) has been scheduled for 16 to 20 May. The purpose of the exercise is to prepare and coordinate a multiple-jurisdictional integrated response to a national catastrophic event, with focus on response and recovery activities among federal, regional, state, tribal, local, and private sector participants.

NLE 2011 will simulate the catastrophic nature of a major earthquake in the central United States region of the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). The year 2011 is the bicentennial anniversary of the 1811 New Madrid earthquake, for which the NMSZ is named. NLE 2011 will be the first NLE to simulate a natural hazard.

The NLE’s National Private Sector Working Group is seeking ideas and comments from the private sector and suggests that companies can use the exercise to test business continuity plans and procedures.

To participate in the National and/or Regional NLE 2011 Private Sector Working Groups, please contact Private.SectorNLE@dhs.gov. Please indicate the desired level of participation i.e. the national or region/state level. Also, please include which states are of interest to ensure assignment to the appropriate Working Group.

first anniversary of bp disaster: payouts low, fears high

from dpa: At first sight, everything looks back to normal on the Gulf of Mexico a year after the worst oil disaster in US history. But fear and uncertainty persist. Gone are the angry banners - 'BP, we want our beach back!' - that vented the fury of the people of Grand Isle and nearby holiday and fishermen's islands in Louisiana's far south. But one only has to scratch the surface to find the anger again.

BP Plc's leased Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers. The wellhead safety valve failed to contain the disaster, and crude oil gushed for three months into the Gulf waters and fragile coastline just 80 km away. The leak was finally sealed in July, and in September was declared formally sealed by the US government.

Some 780 million litres of crude oil - 4.9 million barrels - had poured onto the Gulf. The reddish-brown fluid lapped onto more than 1,000 kilometres of fragile coastline, killing thousands of fish, pelicans, tortoises, whales and dolphins. Officials closed beaches and fishing grounds. Tourism and the fishing industry, major keys to the local economy, collapsed.

Damage compensation payouts have been slow, despite the 20- billion-dollar fund that BP set up after some arm-twisting from US President Barack Obama. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) said this week it has paid out 3.8 billion dollars - a small drop of available money - representing 300,000 claims.

ground zero: one nation under godzilla

from clyde lewis: Is it all signs that this is the end of the world? Perhaps – but no one really knows. But it also can be a reminder that the earth is not dying – it is very much alive! Our ideas of an end can be a self fulfilling prophecy. So instead of thinking it’s the end of the world why not just accept that this is our world.
