"America's Got Talent" Singer Believed He Was Injured In War

from ap: A soldier-turned-TV contestant whose claims of being injured in battle were dismissed by military officials says he believed he was telling the truth, but he doesn't know what is real. Timothy Michael Poe appeared on Monday's episode of the NBC show "America's Got Talent," claiming he was injured by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009, though Minnesota National Guard records don't support his claims. Poe, who now lives in Texas, cried in portions of an interview aired Friday on WFAA-TV in Dallas. He told the station he doesn't know why he "believed things that happened to me, and they might not have?" Poe won over the crowd and celebrity judges on the talent show with a moving story about how he blocked a grenade blast to save his buddies. He said the blast broke his back and left him with a brain injury. The National Guard has said military records show Poe wasn't injured in combat in Afghanistan, and he has been criticized — especially by veterans — since he made his injury claims. Poe also provided a photo to the NBC talent show of a soldier he passed off as himself, though the photo actually shows Staff Sgt. Norman Bone in Afghanistan in 2006. Bone said Friday that Poe's alleged lies disrespect all men and women who've served in the military, and he called Poe's actions "completely wrong." Poe's fiance, Carrie Morris, has said Poe accidentally submitted the photo because he was rushed. Poe has declined requests for interviews from the Associated Press.

NORAD, North American Aerospace Defense Command fighters will be busy well before Super Bowl Sunday preparing to protect the skies around the stadium in Miami for game day. “Exercise Amalgam Virgo 10-Miami” will be held Thursday in the Greater Miami area to allow interagency partners the chance to practice temporary flight restriction violation procedures.

“Amalgam Virgo 10.1-Miami” comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Civil Air Patrol, and CONR’s Eastern Air Defense Sector. Residents in the area can expect flights to begin around midnight Thursday and continue for about two hours early Friday morning. “This exercise in Miami is an effective way to ensure all interagency partners are prepared for game day,” said Maj. Gen. Garry Dean, CONR commander.


“The exercise will test command and control and execution procedures for air defense for the Super Bowl and other like venues throughout the United States.” These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure CONR’s rapid response capability. CONR has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the commands response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. “Defending America’s skies is our number one priority,” General Dean said. “Whether it’s Super Bowl Sunday or any other Sunday, the men and women of CONR are always on alert.”

bank failures hit 106 for year; many more are weak

from ap: It's a big number that only tells part of the story. The number of banks that have failed so far this year topped 100 on Friday — hitting 106 by the end of the day — the most in nearly two decades. But the trouble in the banking system from bad loans and the recession goes even deeper.

Dozens, perhaps hundreds, of other banks remain open even though they are as weak as many that have been shuttered. Regulators are seizing banks slowly and selectively — partly to avoid inciting panic and partly because buyers for bad banks are hard to find.

Going slow buys time. An economic recovery could save some banks that would otherwise go under. But if the recovery is slow and smaller banks' finances get even worse, it could wind up costing even more.

This year's 106 bank failures are the most in any year since 181 collapsed in 1992 at the end of the savings-and-loan crisis. On Friday, regulators took over three small Florida banks — Partners Bank and Hillcrest Bank Florida, both of Naples, and Flagship National Bank in Bradenton — along with four elsewhere: American United Bank of Lawrenceville, Ga., Bank of Elmwood in Racine, Wis., Riverview Community Bank in Otsego, Minn., and First Dupage Bank in Westmont, Ill.

alabama parents upset over fema coloring book with 9/11 content

All of these disasters were featured in a coloring book on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's website, designed to help children cope with disasters. But one page has parents taking the colors away. It's an illustration of the World Trade Center Towers in New York. One of the towers has smoke coming out of it while a plane looks to be heading towards the other. "They like to color happy pictures not pictures like that I don't think I would like to give my child these kids of pictures to color," said parent Brandy Greer. Another parent, who was from New York, couldn't believe the scene was in something intended for such young minds. She said she thinks the picture might actually scare a child, since most might now [sic] understand the horror of 9/11... The coloring book that included the page on 9/11 was created by the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team in Minnesota.

'black hats' keep lookout for troublemakers
from washington times: Fearing demonstrations from Ron Paul delegates here at the Republican National Convention, the party has created a "black-hat" squad to track the Paulites and other potential troublemakers to make sure they don't cause a scene on the convention floor.

Identified by their black baseball caps emblazoned with a white star, squad members keep an eye on delegates they fear might cause a scene. The squad is empowered by the convention managers to take delegates' credentials and kick them off the convention floor - a step one convention official said would be unprecedented.

Squad members have made "their presence known, to let all people know big brother's watching them," said a Republican official familiar with the squad who has been involved in the last 10 GOP conventions.

from wcco: New technology is allowing law enforcement cars to go looking for trouble. Computers now installed in cruisers automatically run license plates and alert officers to wanted drivers. Police in Lakeville are testing that technology right now, but you might be surprised who came up with it: Target. The Minnesota-based corporation is working on technology that would take pictures of license plates that come into store parking lots. Last month, Target donated to the Lakeville Police Department the technology that reads and runs license plates through a crime database.

In an emergency, arriving officers also will be able to view real-time images from the cameras on screens in their squad cars. "The key is getting the information to the police officer in that car," said Mayor Richard Daley. Cameras belonging to the Chicago Transit Authority and other public agencies have been linked to the city's 911 center, and devices in some public buildings also have been connected as Daley seeks to consolidate video surveillance.
