Not Beverly Eckert, a Stamford, Conn., insurance executive before she lost her husband of 21 years on Sept. 11, 2001. Not Karen Eckert or Susan Bourque, her sisters back home in Buffalo, before Beverly's death in a plane crash earlier this year. Yet it's the path all would take, that of reluctant but determined advocate: First Beverly as one of the most visible faces pushing to fix problems exposed by the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Now her sisters, taking on aviation safety following the Feb. 12 crash of Beverly's plane, Continental Connection Flight 3407, near Buffalo. She and 49 others died. "I didn't want anybody thinking, oh, there's this professional advocacy family stepping forward again, they're rabble-rousers," Karen Eckert said, describing her initial reluctance. "Or have people think we're using (Beverly)," Bourque added. Yet after Beverly's death they found themselves, like she had, in a position to be effective advocates, unburdened at home by the demands of young children and with enough knowledge and passion to drive them through their grief toward action.

from bloomberg: Pinnacle Airlines Corp. pilots “went from complacency to catastrophe” in the February crash near Buffalo, New York, that killed 50 people, and didn’t recognize the danger, a U.S. safety board member said. National Transportation Safety Board member Debbie Hersman said during a hearing of the board today [may14] in Washington that the pilots performed tasks such as extending the landing gear without realizing their airspeed was plummeting. The board, in the last of three days of hearings, is examining hiring and training at Pinnacle’s Colgan unit and the possibility of pilot error and fatigue in the February crash. Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote the Federal Aviation Administration today urging a reevaluation of training criteria for pilots.

The pilots’ incorrect responses to the plane’s aerodynamic stall showed “they were discombobulated,” Hersman said. “This crew went from complacency to catastrophe. They didn’t see it coming.” Cockpits may need automatic alerts to tell pilots their speed is dropping, she said. “I don’t see any evidence he ever understood the situation he was in,” Robert Key Dismukes, a NASA Ames Research Center expert on cockpit distraction, said of the plane’s pilot, Marvin Renslow. Conversations between Renslow, 47, and copilot Rebecca Shaw, 24, about icing on the plane were “leading them away from what to do next,” Dismukes said. Neither had much experience flying in icing, he said, based on his reading of the transcript from the cockpit flight recorder. Communications from a controller at a critical phase in the flight “didn’t help the workload situation,” he said.

The car smashed through two police barriers in an apparent attempt to ram the open-top bus carrying the royal party, which included Queen Beatrix, 71. Dutch media reported that the driver, a 38-year-old man, had been fired from his job and faced eviction from his home. He was slumped at the wheel when he was arrested. Police said that the man, who was in a critical condition, had no history of mental illness and had acted alone. No explosives were found in the vehicle. The Royal Family had been visiting Apeldoorn, 60 miles (96 km) east of Amsterdam, as part of the festivities for the annual Queen’s Day holiday. In a rare television address Queen Beatrix offered her condolences. “We are speechless that something so terrible could have happened,” she said, looking shaken. “My family and I think everybody in the country sympathises with the victims, their families and friends. What began as a great day has ended in a terrible tragedy.” On Queen’s Day, which commemorates the birth of Queen Beatrix’s mother, millions of people take the day off, dress in orange wigs and hats and hold street parties. gunman kills 13 & himself at ny immigration center

from ap: A gunman opened fire on a center where immigrants were taking a citizenship exam Friday in downtown Binghamton, killing 13 people before apparently committing suicide. The suspected gunman carried identification with the name of 42-year-old Jiverly Voong of nearby Johnson City, N.Y., a law enforcement official said. But the name is an alias that the man has used in the past, said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and was talking on condition of anonymity. "It obviously was premeditated," said Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski, noting the gunman blocked the rear exit with his car. "He made sure nobody could escape." Police did not mention a motive. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, whose district includes Binghamton, said the gunman had recently been let go from IBM in nearby Johnson City. The man entered a foyer at the American Civic Association and shot two receptionists, Zikuski said. One receptionist was killed, but another pretended to be dead, then crawled a desk and called 911, he said. Police responded within two minutes.

from ap: A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and "lying in wait" opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield, police said. Police Chief Nate Harper said the motive for the shooting isn't clear, but friends said the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns. Richard Poplawski, 23, met officers at the doorway and shot two of them in the head immediately, Harper said. An officer who tried to help the two also was killed.

from bloomberg: A Pinnacle Airlines Corp. plane that crashed near Buffalo, New York, wasn’t affected by icing, said a U.S. board that continued to probe possible pilot error. The plane functioned normally even after “some ice” likely accumulated, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement today in Washington. Maintenance records yielded “no significant findings.” The safety agency also said one of the pilots pulled the airplane’s nose up after an alert indicated the aircraft was about to lose sufficient lift to stay in flight. Two seconds later, the plane rolled and began its fatal plunge. The NTSB statement updates information collected so far in the crash that killed 50 people Feb. 12. Pinnacle’s Colgan Air unit operated the flight from Newark, New Jersey, on behalf of Continental Airlines Inc. No cause has yet been determined.
