Digital Download Sales Top £1 Billion In UK

from independent.co.uk: Digital sales of music, games and films have broken the £1 billion barrier for the first time, according to new figures. Research by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) shows shoppers spent £1.033 billion - an 11.4% rise - on downloads, with video games accounting for more than half that figure with sales of £552.2 million. Physical sales of CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray and videogames still account for more than three quarters of the entertainment market, but sales fell by 17.6% compared to 2011. ERA director general Kim Bayley said: "Breaching the £1 billion barrier is an incredible achievement for the UK's digital entertainment retailers and reflects their huge investment in new and innovative services which means you can buy music, video and games literally at any time of the day and wherever you are. At the same time I suspect many people will be surprised to learn just how resilient the physical business still is - with three quarters of entertainment sales still on disc. Downloads offer convenience and portability, but people still seem to value the quality and tangibility of a physical product."

R.I.P. Dave Brubeck: Pioneering Jazz Legend Dies At 91

from stereogum.com: The great jazz pianist >Dave Brubeck died [Wednesday, December 5th] of heart failure in Norwalk, Connecticut. He would’ve been 92 [the next day]. Brubeck grew up on a cattle ranch in California, and he studied zoology in college before switching over to music. While serving in Patton’s Third Army during World War II, he formed one of the Army’s first racially integrated bands. During the war, he also studied experimental music under Arnold Schoenberg. And when Brubeck rose to fame with his Dave Brubeck Quartet in the ’50s, he applied new tonalities and unconventional time signatures to his music, while still keeping it breezy and accessible. He sold millions and ended up on the cover of Time magazine and he did it without losing the exploratory side of his music.

But more important, what do the rise and triumph of Swift and Perry tell us about the current image of women in entertainment?

Despite the passage of time since second-wave feminism erupted in the late 1960s, we’ve somehow been thrown back to the demure girly-girl days of the white-bread 1950s. It feels positively nightmarish to survivors like me of that rigidly conformist and man-pleasing era, when girls had to be simple, peppy, cheerful and modest. Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds and Sandra Dee formed the national template -- that trinity of blond oppressors!

As if flashed forward by some terrifying time machine, there’s Taylor Swift, America’s latest sweetheart, beaming beatifically in all her winsome 1950s glory from the cover of Parade magazine in the Thanksgiving weekend newspapers. In TV interviews, Swift affects a “golly, gee whiz” persona of cultivated blandness and self-deprecation, which is completely at odds with her shrewd glam dress sense. Indeed, without her mannequin posturing at industry events, it’s doubtful that Swift could have attained her high profile.

It’s hardly a new idea that music is intertwined with our emotions. But how have our favorites changed over the decades, and what do these changes say about America’s shifting emotional landscape?

Music is a form of naturalistic data that, much like popular television, literature, and sales of consumer goods, scientists can sample for insight into our minds and values. Researchers E. Glenn Schellenberg and Christian von Scheve set out to examine songs popular in America during the last five decades, using a selection culled from Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 charts. Schellenberg and von Scheve wanted to learn how emotional cues in music, such as tempo (slow to fast) and mode (major or minor key), have changed since 1960.
