♬Liner Notes♬: "So this is the new year?" Welcome back to the little music show that could... it's a new year of Pump Up Tha Volume and what a great way to kick off the new year with an impressive array of brand new music! Newcomers like Cub Scouts, Lady Lamb and James Younger alongside Metric, Night Moves, Domenico and much more!

The 1975
"Sex"
'Sex' EP
Vagrant, 2012
Note: Our very first song for 2013 is, well, "Sex"! Consequence of Sound says "Manchester’s The 1975 aren’t trying to sugar coat anything with their new EP, the second in a series of three to be released before the band’s debut, set to come out next spring. Unabashedly titled Sex, the four-song album’s title track boasts lyrics such as, “But if we’re gonna do anything / We might as well just fuck / She’s got a boyfriend anyway.” The EP is, as the band said, “About passing moments … moments that we don’t analyze at the time – only to understand them retrospectively.”"

Night Moves
"Headlights"
'Colored Emotions'
Domino, 2012
Note: Last heard on PUTV Episode028, the Minneapolis band returns with another track from their acclaimed debut album. Pitchfork says that "Last year (2011), then-unsigned Minneapolis trio Night Moves posted their full-length debut for free on Bandcamp: Colored Emotions spread through the Twin Cities music scene on the back of the band's tight live shows and knockout single "Headlights", a psychedelic country gem awash in vocalist John Pelant's golden yowl."

Soft Moon
"Insides"
'Zeros'
Captured Tracks, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP "In case you haven’t dipped into this great San Francisco act yet, The Soft Moon hail back to the noisy, reverberated days of the 1980s... “Insides” is an excellent offering from this great record. Right off the top, we hear that noisy, striking Love & Rockets snare, followed by the watery bass and minimalist guitar combo that defined the Cure on tunes like “Seventeen Seconds”, “Faith”, and “Last Dance”."
(More Info)

Metric
"Breathing Underwater" (acoustic)
'Synthetica' (Deluxe Version)
Metric Music, 2012
Note: Song source KCRW says "Canadian indie rockers Metric are releasing a deluxe edition of their album Synthetica which will include a few new additions, like this acoustic version of their catchy song "Breathing Underwater."" Meanwhile, Spin says "Metric, to mix a metaphor or two, are taking a well-deserved victory lap before coming back out for an encore." This is the band's fifth studio album.

Domenico
"Cine Privê"
'Cine Privě'
Plug Research, 2012
Note: Last heard on Episode034, Domenico returns with the title track to an album that the Inside World Music blog says "The sonic textures are rhythmic, nostalgic, bossa nova-inspired, and electronic without any worries of where the music can go. The music is littered with friendly little nuances that are blurby, dance-ready, trippy, and avant-garde to the hilt."
(More Info)

Cub Scouts
"Evie"
'Told You So'
self-released, 2012
Note: "Cub Scouts are an energetic Brisbane based 5-piece that have been crafting their own style of indie pop music over the last year. Their debut single 'Evie' landed high rotation on triple j and scored Cub Scouts a spot on the St Jerome's Laneway Festival lineup thanks to triple j unearthed." If you don't understood any of those references, suffice it to say: Cub Scouts are an up-and-coming Australian band with a youthful look and vibrant sound... Keep an eye on them!

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro
"Here I Am"
'Adam Green and Binki Shapiro'
Rounder, 2013
Note: The Key blog says "Adam Green & Binki Shapiro have pulled off their own unique version of a She & Him/Sonny & Cher/Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra collaboration on their self-titled album coming out January 29th... Green is one half of the Moldy Peaches; Shapiro is the former front person for Little Joy, a trio that featured Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes. Green & Shapiro’s debut is a sweet collection of Sixties inspired folk/pop duets."
(More Info)

Steve Hauschildt
"Accelerated Yearning"
'Sequitur'
Kranky, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says that "Both in his solo work and his contributions to the Cleveland trio Emeralds, musician Steve Hauschildt has been exploring electronic textures and soundscapes for the better part of his adult life. His sophomore solo album, Sequitur, follows nearly a year after the release of his debut, Tragedy & Geometry, and continues that album’s trend of using an array of vintage equipment to create modern sounds, but introduces Hauschildt’s vocals into the mix for the first time."
(More Info)

Lady Lamb The Beekeeper
"Rooftop"
'Ripely Pine'
Ba Da Bing, 2013
Note: Beats Per Minute says that "By her own admission Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, aka Aly Spaltro, owes much of her musical career to the 20,000 DVD’s which are housed at Bart’s and Greg’s DVD Explosion in Brunswick, Maine. In her time working there, she came up with the basic foundation of what would become her debut record Ripely Pine, which is due out February 19th via Ba Da Bing Records (The Dead C, tUnE-yArDs). Our first taste of the record comes in the form of “Rooftop,” a lean rocker which showcases Spaltro’s muscular vocals and her elastic guitar licks."
(More Info)

Merz
"Credo"
'No Compass Will Find Home'
Accidental, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says that "One of the first albums to look forward to in 2013, No Compass Will Find Home, comes from UK musician Merz, who spent time in the foothills of the Swiss Alps with co-producer Matthew Herbert to create adrenalin-fueled songs."
(More Info)

Joel Plaskett Emergency
"Harbour Boys"
'Scrappy Happiness'
Maple Music, 2012
Note: Hailing from Hailfax, Nova Scotia - the same town as my favorite band Sloan - song source KEXP says "When his band of eight years, Thrush Hermit, broke up in 1999, Canadian songwriter Joel Plaskett began his solo career, but it wasn’t until he teamed up with the backing duo of drummer Dave Marsh and bassist Tim Brennan (also known as The Emergency) that Plaskett’s career started taking off... Shimmering with melodies recalling latter-day Springsteen, “Harbour Boys” finds Plaskett trading the Emergency’s punchy rhythm in for the tone of a 12-string acoustic guitar."
(More Info)

Hums
"Digital Winter"
'Deep In Swim'
self-released, 2012
Note: The Crack In The Road blog gives us the lowdown. "The solo outfit of Elise from Minneapolis quartet Nice Purse, Hums may well be one of the most exciting new artists of the year; and that’s an assumption based upon only three tracks. Far denser and more folk orientated than her primary band, there’s an added level of beauty to Hums’ music, part Sarah Jaffe, part Feist, two comparisons that I don’t make lightly."
(More Info)

Button:Pusher
"A Tight Rope" (w/ Lex Land)
'Button:Pusher'
self-released, 2012
Note: Song source KCRW says "Down-tempo producer Kiran Shahani made his mark as one half of the duo Bitter: Sweet. Under his stewardship as Button:Pusher, he leads an impressive array of vocalists from Lou Lou of Thievery Corporation to Telepopmusik's Angela McCluskey providing a wave of chill out tracks."
(More Info)

James Younger
"Monday Morning"
'James Younger'
Light Organ, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "Vancouver-based guitar pop songwriter James Younger has made himself known in the Vancouver music scene through his work as a singer and guitarist in the bands Sun Wizard and The Zolas (both on Light Organ) and just this past year has released his self-titled solo debut, also on Light Organ. Our song of the day, “Monday Morning”, from that release, is a catchy as hell piece of guitar-pop that is a radio classic like the Cars would write. Younger’s vision for radio-hit guitar pop is fully realized by the doubled guitar lines, bright backbeats, and the strongly carrying melody topping the mix."
