from latimes.com: The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said all evidence suggests director Tony Scott took his own life Sunday, when witnesses say he leaped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said the office is now treating the case as a suicide. An autopsy is likely to be performed Monday and the Los Angeles Police Department is interviewing witnesses and others. Scott left a suicide note at his office, law enforcement sources said, but police have not revealed what was in it. Simon Halls, a spokesman for Scott's family, said the family asked "that their privacy be respected at this time."

"there's a new mexico?" as many of you know, we went 'off the grid' last week. although we did discover some wi-fi by the second day, i still stuck to my 'internet fast' for the most part. but i took notes on some of the interesting things that happened while visiting family in taos, here are some highlights:

- we saw shirley maclaine at the santa fe airport, she was wearing a big jacket that said 'ghetto blaster' on the back

- there's a pretty cool radio station called ktao 101.9fm (it's solar powered!); and i was listening for the emergency alert system test to happen, but they didn't participate. (here's what the test looked like elsewhere) and apparently, they weren't alone: 'emergency drill fails in new mexico'

- meanwhile, they're working on something called the 'taos regional command communications center'. brought to you by homeland security & the local 'power' company kit carson, it basically looks to be a consolidation of emergency, power & communication services. and, of course: "this system will also be responsible for monitoring cyber security tied to smart grid and green grid systems."

- our plane out of santa fe was delayed, which made us miss our connection at lax... yesterday, i saw this article about the airline we used: 'dept. of transportation issues first fine against airline for tarmac delay'

- i hope keane made a lot of money licensing "everybody's changing" to alaska airlines, but damn i used to really like that song...

- the council on foreign relations magazine, foreign affairs, was prominently displayed on sale at the newport news store in the los angeles international airport.

- i had my first chance to opt-out of the radioactive naked body scanners at lax; instead, i got felt up by a very nice gentlemen who didn't even tell me his name. it was around this point that i remembered it was veteran's day & that's why it was so crowded... we were reminded once again that it was a holiday by the fine folks at heinz ketchup.

The new movie “Battle: LA” will soon be in theaters and for the first time we might be seeing a film that will not only approximate the possibility of urban warfare on United States soil, it will also remind us that there was a time where the enemy was an unseen phantom. It will also demonstrate that in the future man’s biggest enemies are the very monsters he thought were fantasies. Sometimes you can say it is just a movie. In the case of Battle: L.A, we have a present day science fiction thriller takes its basic premise form an event that happened nearly 70 years ago.

from global research: What impresses me in the current financial crisis is the near-total failure of so-called progressives to appreciate the magnitude of what is going on or the level of intelligence behind it. How many will say, for instance, that the crash was deliberately engineered by the creation, then destruction, of the investment bubbles of the last decade? When the financial system creates bubbles it drives up the cost of assets far beyond their true value in producing or storing wealth. When the bubbles burst the value of the assets plummets. Those with ready cash then buy them up on the cheap. When the dust settles more wealth has been concentrated in fewer hands. The rich get richer, and ordinary people are left in a deeper condition of indebtedness, poverty, and pressure to perform to the liking of the financial masters. Progressives think the system needs to be “reformed.” Maybe the banking system needs to be re-regulated or even nationalized. Maybe it should be possible for families facing loss of their homes to get a lower monthly payment from a bankruptcy court. Maybe the government instead of the private sector should administer student loans. What we fail to acknowledge is that the system itself is totalitarian. This means that it is designed to exert total control over the lives of individuals. We are accustomed to use this label when thinking of anachronisms of history like communism or fascism. We do not understand that globalist finance capitalism and the government which protects, enables, or even regulates it are also totalitarian.

from consortium news: Since Gary Webb’s suicide four years ago, I have written annual retrospectives about the late journalist’s important contribution to the historical record - he forced devastating admissions from the CIA about drug trafficking by the Nicaraguan contra rebels under the protection of the Reagan administration in the 1980s. And each time I’ve written one of those stories, I have received e-mails attacking my acceptance of the fact that Webb committed suicide on the night of Dec. 9, 2004. Some people want to believe that he was really assassinated by the CIA or some other government agency. But the evidence of his carefully planned suicide – as he suffered deep pain as a pariah in his profession who could no longer earn a living – actually points to something possibly even more tragic: Webb ended his life because people who should have supported his work simply couldn’t be bothered. Though Gary Webb was horribly betrayed by his colleagues in the news business – and especially his editors at the San Jose Mercury News – he also was taken advantage of by people in the progressive movement, who sometimes exploited his celebrity by having him speak at their events for little or no money. There is a deeply troubling attitude within the American progressive movement that it bears next to no responsibility for people who speak truth to power and suffer horrible consequences, as Webb did. While sometimes progressives cheer the heroism, they rarely back it up with anything sustainable.

the coast isn't clear for scientology anymore

mailings to scientology sites probed
from los angeles times: Mailings of a suspicious white powder to 10 Church of Scientology addresses prompted the evacuation of dozens of people and the closure of a major thoroughfare Wednesday as hazmat teams were called to examine the packages... The incidents appeared to be part of a hoax. Preliminary tests showed the powder to be cornstarch and wheat germ. The Church of Scientology had no comment about the incidents. The mailings come after a cyber attack last week on the Church's website. Authorities said there was no evidence that Wednesday's mailings were connected to the hacking.

711chan.org admin calls for end of attacks on scientology

One of the moderators on 711chan.org thought he had learned from a friend what the real server's address was on Friday... But within minutes, users began complaining the software was crashing and others analyzed the traffic and found that the IP address didn't belong to the Church of Scientology, reporting that that the software was actually targeting a school in the Netherlands.

medical marijuana machines start up in los angeles

from time: The city that popularized the fast food drive-thru has a new innovation: 24-hour medical marijuana vending machines.

Patients suffering from chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments that marijuana is said to alleviate can get their pot with a dose of convenience at the Herbal Nutrition Center, where a large machine will dole out the drug around the clock.

"Convenient access, lower prices, safety, anonymity," inventor and owner Vincent Mehdizadeh said, extolling the benefits of the machine.

But federal drug agents say the invention may need unplugging.
