from nytimes.com: Barack Hussein Obama was re-elected president of the United States on Tuesday, overcoming powerful economic headwinds, a lock-step resistance to his agenda by Republicans in Congress and an unprecedented torrent of advertising as a divided nation voted to give him more time. In defeating Mitt Romney, the president carried Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia and Wisconsin, a near sweep of the battleground states, and was holding a narrow advantage in Florida. The path to victory for Mr. Romney narrowed as the night wore along, with Mr. Obama winning at least 303 electoral votes.

One of the biggest problems with voter registration is that Americans are constantly moving across state lines. When they move, they are supposed to alert local election offices so that their previous states can be notified. But very few actually do and as a result, almost 3 million people in the U.S. are registered to vote in more than one state.

from reuters: Gordon Brown resigned as prime minister of Britain on Tuesday and said Conservative leader David Cameron would take over, ending 13 years of rule by the center-left Labour Party. The center-right Conservatives won most seats in a parliamentary election last week but fell short of a majority. Labour came second and the Liberal Democrats a distant third.
11/5 update ... you can't make this stuff up: israel proposes work camps for illegal migrants from haaretz: The government is considering establishing work camps in the south of the country, where illegal migrant workers will receive shelter, food and medical care, Army Radio reported Wednesday. In exchange, illegal migrants would perform manual labor outside the camps, but would not earn a salary... "I fear how far we have fallen," said MK Dov Khenin (Hadash) in reaction to the work camp proposal, adding that he thinks the plan would encourage many more asylum seekers to try to enter Israel.
10/22 updates: mystery over uk nuclear expert's death plunge at un hq in austria from metro.co.uk: A British nuclear expert has plunged to his death from the 17th floor of a United Nations HQ, just as top-level talks with Iran began. The 47-year-old official, only identified so far as Timothy H, toppled about 120ft from the UN's building in the Austrian capital yesterday. He is believed to have been a member of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation and was due to take part in the UN-Iran discussions starting today. Police revealed no further details, beyond saying an autopsy would be held. Reports suggest no suicide note had been found.

destabilization 2.0: soros, cia, mossad & the new media destabilization of iran from corbett report: It's the 2009 presidential election in Iran and opposition leader Mir-Houssein Mousavi declares victory hours before the polls close, insuring that any result to the contrary will be called into question. Western media goes into overdrive, fighting with each other to see who can offer the most hyperbolic denunciation of the vote and President Ahmadenijad's apparent victory (BBC wins by publishing bald-faced lies about the supposed popular uprising which it is later forced to retract). On June 13th, 30,000 "tweets" begin to flood Twitter with live updates from Iran, most written in English and provided by a handful of newly-registered users with identical profile photos. The Jerusalem Post writes a story about the Iran Twitter phenomenon a few hours after it starts (and who says Mossad isn't staying up to date with new media?). Now, YouTube is providing a "Breaking News" link at the top of every page linking to the latest footage of the Iranian protests (all shot in high def, no less). from wikinews: Protests, riots and violence broke out in cities in Iran Saturday night following an election which many in Iran and the world say was fraudulent. Demonstrations took place late into the night, with waves of police fighting protestors in Tehran, Shiraz, Mashad and Rasht.
Protesters chanting "Death to the dictator!" occupied major streets around Tehran, with roadblocks being set up against police. Tear gas has been deployed against protestors in the upscale Valiasr Street district of Tehran as well as at the University of Tehran.
The protestors are supporters of Mir-Hossein Mousavi, a candidate in the Iranian presidential election. Mousavi accuses the Iranian government of "appalling" fraud after it reported that the nation's current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who had been expected to receive less than 50% of the vote and have to face Mousavi in a runoff election, received 62%. Addressing officials in an open letter, Mousavi said, "this country has been through a grand Islamic revolution and the least message of this revolution is that our nation is alert and will oppose anyone who aims to seize the power against the law." The protesters, reports say, do not seek to overthrow the Islamic regime, which has been in place in Iran since 1979, but instead to reform it.

iranians start heading to polls on super friday from presstv: The polls have opened in Iran in a presidential election which has generated intense excitement among the electorate as never before. Polls opened at 8:00 am (0330 GMT) and are to close ten hours later. Polling may be extended until midnight if needed to cater for demand, in what is expected to be a record turnout in a closely-contested election. By casting his ballot at about 8:15, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei became one of the first voters. In a brief speech to the waiting journalists, he commended the passionate yet peaceful nature of the election campaign and called on everyone to use their right to vote, which he also described as both a religious and logical duty. In addition to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who is seeking a second four-year term, Super Friday's vote includes former prime minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi, former parliament speaker Mehdi Karroubi and Secretary of the Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei. Over 46 million Iranians aged 18 and above, are eligible to vote today in the 10th presidential election since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 deposed the US-backed monarchy. In addition to the 45,713 ballot boxes ready to receive the people's votes throughout the country, the sizeable Iranian expat community is also catered for, with arrangements in place in about 130 countries worldwide.
bills would kill dhs satellite surveillance office from fcw: A senior House Democrat has introduced legislation that would kill the controversial National Applications Office (NAO), a Homeland Security Department-run program to make intelligence and military satellite imagery available to civilian agencies for domestic purposes. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Homeland Security Committee’s Intelligence, Information Sharing and Terrorism Risk Assessment Subcommittee, introduced a bill on June 4 that would require DHS to immediately close the NAO. She also introduced a measure, co-sponsored by Rep. Norman Dicks (D-Wash.), to prohibit DHS from spending any money on the NAO or any similar program.

"I absolutely believe the Internet is passing from its free days into a paid system.
