Since the February 2009 crash, Eckert and other families of crash victims have worked to make historic improvements in flight safety. Her sister Beverly was a key leader of 9/11 family groups. Beverly Eckert lost her husband, Sean Rooney, when the Twin Towers fell. Schumer said Karen Eckert has worked to pressure decision makers to make much-needed improvements in pilot training and air passenger awareness and safety.

from ap: None of the Eckert sisters ever envisioned walking the halls of Congress, advocating to right wrongs to protect the country from tragedy. Not Beverly Eckert, a Stamford, Conn., insurance executive before she lost her husband of 21 years on Sept. 11, 2001. Not Karen Eckert or Susan Bourque, her sisters back home in Buffalo, before Beverly's death in a plane crash earlier this year. Yet it's the path all would take, that of reluctant but determined advocate: First Beverly as one of the most visible faces pushing to fix problems exposed by the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Now her sisters, taking on aviation safety following the Feb. 12 crash of Beverly's plane, Continental Connection Flight 3407, near Buffalo. She and 49 others died. "I didn't want anybody thinking, oh, there's this professional advocacy family stepping forward again, they're rabble-rousers," Karen Eckert said, describing her initial reluctance. "Or have people think we're using (Beverly)," Bourque added. Yet after Beverly's death they found themselves, like she had, in a position to be effective advocates, unburdened at home by the demands of young children and with enough knowledge and passion to drive them through their grief toward action.

from bloomberg: Pinnacle Airlines Corp. pilots “went from complacency to catastrophe” in the February crash near Buffalo, New York, that killed 50 people, and didn’t recognize the danger, a U.S. safety board member said. National Transportation Safety Board member Debbie Hersman said during a hearing of the board today [may14] in Washington that the pilots performed tasks such as extending the landing gear without realizing their airspeed was plummeting. The board, in the last of three days of hearings, is examining hiring and training at Pinnacle’s Colgan unit and the possibility of pilot error and fatigue in the February crash. Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote the Federal Aviation Administration today urging a reevaluation of training criteria for pilots.

The pilots’ incorrect responses to the plane’s aerodynamic stall showed “they were discombobulated,” Hersman said. “This crew went from complacency to catastrophe. They didn’t see it coming.” Cockpits may need automatic alerts to tell pilots their speed is dropping, she said. “I don’t see any evidence he ever understood the situation he was in,” Robert Key Dismukes, a NASA Ames Research Center expert on cockpit distraction, said of the plane’s pilot, Marvin Renslow. Conversations between Renslow, 47, and copilot Rebecca Shaw, 24, about icing on the plane were “leading them away from what to do next,” Dismukes said. Neither had much experience flying in icing, he said, based on his reading of the transcript from the cockpit flight recorder. Communications from a controller at a critical phase in the flight “didn’t help the workload situation,” he said.

from alex constantine: This story is a bit sketchy, IMhO - obvious questions are left hanging by the reporter, to wit:

• Why didn't the police obtain a search warrant before entering John's home and frantically searching for the camera?

• The police claimed that John was on a nearby roof, allegedly accompanied by a 13-year-old boy, taping the wreckage safely beyond the police perimeter. Officials claimed that he shouldn't have been on the roof with a minor. All right. Was this such a deplorable "crime" that they went ballistic, immediately launched into an illegal search for the tape - to "prove" the boy had been on the roof? This is the stated reason for confiscating the video camera. And it's nonsensical - did it occur to these highly-trained law enforcement officials that an illegally-obtained video tape is inadmissible as evidence - the very reason given for confiscating John's camera in the first place?

Or ...

Did the police have ulterior motives for scrambling after the video camera, Delta Force-style ...

from ap: Has anyone mentioned that Steven Chealander, the National Transportation Safety Board member leading the Buffalo crash investigation, is a former American Airlines pilot and manager? As the NTSB notes on its Web site: "Mr. Chealander brings a wealth of both civilian and military aviation experience to the NTSB"... He joined American after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. We also found this interesting tidbit about the NTSB member from his official bio: "In 1986, Mr. Chealander was selected as Military Aide to President Ronald Reagan. In this capacity, he performed a variety of ceremonial and emergency preparedness duties, including custody of the President's emergency briefcase, 'the football.'"
