This Charming Plan: Predictive Programming, Princess Di's Death
August 31, 1978:
19 year-old Steven Morrissey first meets guitarist Johnny Marr,
the one who will launch Morrissey's career several years later
by aggressively enlisting him to co-found a band: The Smiths.
August 31, 1997:
19 years to-the-day since Morrissey met guitarist Johnny Marr,
Princess Diana is killed under circumstances foreshadowed
in Morrissey's work, beginning with an album by The Smiths.
After 15yrs, "Queen of Hearts" Still Mourned In UK
from today.msnbc.msn.com: “Diana is dead,” read the headlines. Most of us remember where we were 15 years ago Friday when we heard the news that Britain’s “Queen of Hearts” had been killed in a car crash. The world looked on in disbelief as news of the paparazzi chase that led to her driver losing control and slamming into a pillar in Paris’ Pont de l’Alma tunnel unfolded. The Princess of Wales, who was just 36, perished along with her friend Dodi Al-Fayed. Images soon emerged of her crushed Mercedes Benz S280 and the stoic young princes at her funeral. Hundreds of Britons and visitors are expected to commemorate the anniversary of her death by paying their respects at her former home, Kensington Palace. “The palace's Golden Gates, site to the sea of flowers and tributes 15 years ago, are as iconic as ever and have been recently re-gilded as part of a £12 million ($19 million) renovation,” said Tim Powell, Digital Media Manager for the Historic Royal Palaces. While the palace is not planning an official commemoration, he said “we also have ‘Diana: glimpses of a modern princess’ — a small display of dresses worn by Diana.”

'Compliance' Highlights Temptations, Perils Of Blind Obedience
from guardian.co.uk: One can object to some of its particulars, but Frank Bruni has a quite interesting and incisive New York Times column today about a new independent film called Compliance, which explores the human desire to follow and obey authority.
Based on real-life events that took place in 2004 at a McDonalds in Kentucky, the film dramatizes a prank telephone call in which a man posing as a police officer manipulates a supervisor to abuse an employee with increasing amounts of cruelty and sadism, ultimately culminating in sexual assault – all by insisting that the abuse is necessary to aid an official police investigation into petty crimes.
That particular episode was but one of a series of similar and almost always-successful hoaxes over the course of at least 10 years, in which restaurant employees were manipulated into obeying warped directives from this same man, pretending on the telephone to be a police officer.
Bruni correctly notes the prime issue raised by all of this: "How much can people be talked into and how readily will they defer to an authority figure of sufficient craft and cunning?" That question was answered 50 years ago by the infamous experiment conducted by psychologist Stanley Milgram, in which an authority figure in a lab coat instructed participants to deliver what they were told were increasingly severe electric shocks to someone in another room whom they could hear but not see. Even as the screams became louder and more agonizing, two-thirds of the participants were induced fully to comply by delivering the increased electric shocks.

RNC 2012 Coverage Threatened By Isaac, Media Covers Storm
from huffingtonpost.com: Republicans gathering to formally nominate Mitt Romney in Tampa are having to grapple with a media that has one eye trained firmly on Tropical Storm Isaac — and is sending many of its biggest stars to cover the extreme weather.
15,000 journalists have traveled down to Florida to cover the Republican convention -- large parcels of media stars on the same plane was not an uncommon sight -- but, as of Monday, they don't have much to do. The storm has already forced the GOP to cancel the first night of its convention, and has the party worrying about how to get their message out if things get worse. As Reuters noted, "Romney could be robbed of some media attention - or worse, have images of convention festivities juxtaposed with searing split-screen television images of the storm's onslaught if Isaac dominates the news this week."
On Monday, at least, Isaac appeared to be winning. The morning's Washington Post was dominated by a huge picture of ominous waves. "Republicans gather, and so does the storm," a headline read. "All eyes on Isaac," an Associated Press article blared.
The network morning shows reflected the preeminence the storm has taken, leading their programs off with multiple packages of coverage. The choice between a potential hurricane passing through the Gulf Coast and a drama-free, stage-managed convention was a seemingly easy one.
"Isaac is the story of the morning," Robin Roberts observed on "Good Morning America." On "Today," Matt Lauer, who had been sent to Tampa for the Republican gathering, was taping outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, outfitted in a classic storm-covering windbreaker.
On "GMA" and "CBS This Morning," Diane Sawyer and Charlie Rose reported from an empty convention center. Anchors openly speculated about the potential media schizophrenia.
"They're going to be sharing the screen all week with the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina," Stephanopoulos said to Sawyer, who had just shown footage of herself trapped in a howling gust of wind earlier in the day.
On "Today," Lauer asked RNC chair Reince Priebus if he was worried about Isaac competing for headlines with the convention.
"It is what it is," Priebus said. "Our message is still going to be the same ... you have to report on this storm."
There was another more ominous sign for Republicans that Isaac was going to take precedence as the week drew on when CNN announced that two of its biggest names, Anderson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien, were headed to New Orleans to cover the storm's potential effect on the city. Both gained new prominence in 2005 when they reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Sam Feist, CNN's Washington bureau chief, was very direct in a tweet:

We're About to Lose 1,000 Small Theaters That Can't Go Digital
Resort Towns Face a Last Picture Show*
from nytimes.com: There are nicer and newer movie theaters than the Strand 5 on the boardwalk here on the Jersey Shore. The sound is uneven, and the auditoriums haven’t been renovated in decades.
But the Strand does have history. It opened as a one-screen movie house in August 1938, and nearly 75 years later the cinema, now a five-screen multiplex, is still serving exiled beachgoers. But for how long?
As a woman in a black bikini and white cover-up flip-flopped into “The Dark Knight Rises” one afternoon this month, the ticket taker, Shelby Fogarty, struck a mournful tone, mindful that the Strand has been for sale for several years, and that management — the family-owned Frank theater chain — won’t say if the theater and its boardwalk neighbor, the Moorlyn Stadium 4, will reopen next season.
If they don’t, Ms. Fogarty, 20, whose family has been summering here since she was a baby, said the loss wouldn’t just be personal: “Time and again I’ve had people come up to me and say, ‘I remember coming here when I was little, and it was only 15 cents to see a movie.’ ”
All along the Jersey Shore, as well as from Montauk to Martha’s Vineyard — indeed in just about any area in the country where mom-and-pop theaters still survive — old movie houses like the Strand are faced with a live-or-die proposition this Labor Day. In an already unsparing economy, and with entertainment rivals multiplying with every new tablet and flat screen, movie theaters are being asked to invest in costly digital projectors just to stay open.
According to recent industry statements, the major Hollywood studios are planning to complete the switch to digital by ceasing to release 35-millimeter film altogether; 20th Century Fox promises to phase out film by the end of next year, and the others are expected to follow. Which means that the analog projectors that have whirred along for decades will be suddenly rendered incapable of playing modern movies. For many seasonal theaters, the dog days of this summer may be the only days they have left.
Though his theater will probably adjust, John Esposito, the owner of the Beach Cinema in Bradley Beach, N.J., warned, “America’s going to lose a lot of its past because of this.”

Punk Band, Pussy Riot, Gets 2yr Jail Sentence For Anti-Putin Show
from wikipedia.org: Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist punk-rock band based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, the band stages politically provocative performances about Russian political life in unusual locations, such as Lobnoye Mesto on Red Square, on top of a trolleybus or on a scaffold in the Moscow Metro.
On February 21, 2012, five members[1] of the group staged a performance on the soleas of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, motivated by their opposition to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the politics of the Russian Orthodox Church.[2][3] Their actions were stopped by church security officials. On March 3, after a video of the performance appeared online, three of the group members were arrested and charged with hooliganism.[4]
Their trial began in late July and raised much controversy in Russia and globally. According to a poll by the Levada Center, 44% of Russians supported the trial and believed in its fairness, while 17% did not.[5] At the same time, the band members gained some noticeable support in Russia and internationally because of allegations of harsh treatment while in custody and the risk of a possible seven-year jail sentence.[6][7]
On August 17, 2012, the three members were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred (Article 213.2 of the Criminal Code) and each sentenced to two years imprisonment.[8][9] The Russian Orthodox Church issued a statement appealing to the authorities to show clemency, within the framework of the law.[10][11] The trial and conviction have attracted international criticism.[12] The foreign ministries of Germany and Sweden, together with representatives of the European Union and the United States, called the sentence “disproportionate”.[13]

'Top Gun' Director Tony Scott Jumps Off LA Bridge; Note Found
Tony Scott's death treated as suicide; autopsy planned
from latimes.com: The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said all evidence suggests director Tony Scott took his own life Sunday, when witnesses say he leaped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said the office is now treating the case as a suicide. An autopsy is likely to be performed Monday and the Los Angeles Police Department is interviewing witnesses and others. Scott left a suicide note at his office, law enforcement sources said, but police have not revealed what was in it. Simon Halls, a spokesman for Scott's family, said the family asked "that their privacy be respected at this time."

HempFest Turns 21: Tens of Thousands Rally for Legalization at Seattle Festival Ahead of November Ballot Measure
from ap: Tens of thousands of people descended on a waterfront park in Seattle Friday for the opening of what's billed as the nation's largest marijuana rally - an event that has a pressing political edge this year as Washington state's voters consider whether to legalize the fun use of pot for adults. Colorado, Oregon and Washington already have medical marijuana laws. And all three also have legalization measures on the November ballot. Washington's would allow sales of up to an ounce of dried marijuana at state-licensed stores and could bring the state nearly $2 billion in tax revenue over the next five years - if the federal government doesn't try to block the law from taking effect. Pot remains illegal under federal law. Washington's measure, Initiative 502, also would prevent nearly 10,000 marijuana possession arrests every year in the state, proponents say. "It looks like we're finally reaching a critical mass to end this critical mess," Hempfest director Vivian McPeak said as the festival began. "If I-502 passes, it'll be a historic moment." Organizers expected at least 150,000 people at the three-day event. Thousands milled along the 1.5-mile long park under a blazing sun Friday afternoon, stopping at booths advertising colorful glass pipes, hemp clothing and medical marijuana dispensaries. Young women shouted at passersby to encourage them to obtain medical marijuana authorizations - "Are you legal yet?" - while other festival goers rested on driftwood logs, lighting joints and pipes.

Report Claims People Still Discover New Music Via Old Media
Nielsen Music 360 Report Says "I Can't Live Without My Radio"
from spin.com: People may be curious enough to Shazam 5 billion songs (11 million of which were Gotye's), but a new report conducted by Nielsen claims that radio remains the No. 1 way people discover new music. In fact, almost half of the 3,000 consumers surveyed — online, no less! — made that claim. The next most popular music referrals come from friends and relatives and YouTube, which, by the way, is the main way teenagers listen to music.
Other interesting stats include that after a recommendation from a friend, the information on music blogs (hi there!) is the most likely influencer in purchasing music, followed by brand endorsement. A tiny fraction of those who responded, 8 percent, share music on social-networking sites, while only 6 percent claim to upload music. (The report, as released, does not include any information on how many people illegally download or upload music, nor does it address other forms of file-sharing such as torrenting.)
The most popular genre of music among males is apparently "rock," which again could sort of mean anything (metal, indie, punk…rap?), while Top 40 was the top-reported genre among females — though that majority was only 15 percent, which leaves a lot to interpretation. As far as what mediums of music most people buy, consumers polled felt digital albums were a better value than CDs, but only by an 8 percent margin. And CDs are extremely unpopular among teens (duh!): Only 36 percent of teens have felt a CD was worth their lunch money in the past year, while 51 percent have used gift cards or their parents' plastic to download music in the same timeframe.
Only 7 percent of 18 to 24 year olds claim to buy posters, and while that's not entirely useful information, it could mean that most of those massive pieces of Pink Floyd and Bob Marley artwork in college dorms are either purchased at Target or maybe come with the space these days.
And last, but not least in terms of reinvigorating the economy of music, a majority of older people (41 percent of respondents ages 55 and up) have reduced their spending. Now that they've finally gotten around to replacing all their old REO Speedwagon LPs, apparently the thrill of finding new music isn't worth acting on. Maybe there's better value in replacing their Bee-Gee's 45s for under a buck.
