think tank urges uk to cut working week to 21 hours

think tank urges uk to cut working week to 21 hoursfrom bbc: The working week should be cut to 21 hours to help boost the economy and improve quality of life, a left-wing think tank has said. The New Economics Foundation claimed in a report the reduction in hours would help to ease unemployment and overwork. The think tank said people were working longer hours now than 30 years ago even though unemployment was at 2.5 million. The foundation admitted people would earn less, but said they would have more time to carry out worthy tasks. They would have better scope to look after children or other dependants, there would be more opportunity for civic duties, and older people could even delay retirement, it said.

biowars/swine flu updates: planning the pandemic

will americans obey govt orders during a swine flu pandemic?
will americans obey govt orders during a swine flu pandemic?from paul joseph watson: Local authorities are keen to know whether American citizens will obey the government in the event of an H1N1 pandemic and take the swine flu vaccine, amidst growing fears of quarantines and forced injections that have been circulating in recent weeks.

Every sign points to the fact that health authorities are preparing mass vaccination programs and quarantines that could be instituted should the H1N1 virus make a deadlier comeback, which has been all but guaranteed by U.S. health authorities as well as the WHO.

Part of those preparations include gauging the potential reaction of Americans to unpopular orders dictated by an increasingly distrusted government. How many citizens will follow orders to stay indoors, evacuate or take a shot?

Some of those questions form part of a survey being conducted by the University of Virginia’s health department targeting everyone except “federal government agencies and their employees,” who “are not qualified respondents for the survey target population,” according to an advisory sent with the survey.

The survey was forwarded to us by a reader who is part of a CEO-only networking group called MindShare in the Washington DC.

I was sent the survey below that is probing folks in VA, MD, and Washington DC on what they would do in a pandemic or anthrax situation,” writes Etienne De La Boetie. “They appear to be trying to determine if folks will comply with government directives in either a flu pandemic or anthrax attack.”

The survey, entitled Community Shielding Shared Spectrum, was issued by the Critical Incident Analysis Group at the University of Virginia and can be read here.

neocon godfather & trotskyite, irving kristol, dead at 89

neocon godfather & trotskyite, irving kristol, dead at 89from aljazeera: Irving Kristol, the political writer whose right-wing ideology heavily influenced the previous US administration of President George Bush, has died at 89 after battling lung cancer. Known as the "godfather" of American neoconservatism, his death in the US state of Virginia on Friday was announced by the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, run by his son William.

Although he did not comment much in public on the war in Iraq, prominent neoconservatives inside and outside the Bush administration played a major role in pushing for the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002, praising him as "a wide-ranging thinker whose writings have helped transform America's political landscape."

While attending college in New York in the 1930s, Kristol was a follower of the Russian Communist Leon Trotsky.

Perceived failures
He later soured on socialism and became a liberal, but also left those ideas behind as he became increasingly disillusioned by the perceived failures of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, which government programmes did not manage to solve problems such as the rise of crime and drug abuse.

During the rise of the New Left in the 1960s and 1970s, Kristol finally became a supporter of the Republican Party, which he said was once as "foreign to me as attending a Catholic mass".

He became a flagship in the network of think-tanks, media outlets and corporations that helped make US conservatism a reigning ideology for at least two decades.

"The influence of Irving Kristol's ideas has been one of the most important factors in reshaping the American climate of opinion over the past 40 years," said Norman Podhoretz, another neoconservative theorist.

'Mugged by reality'
neocon godfather & trotskyite, irving kristol, dead at 89Kristol released several books, including Neo-Conservatism: The Autobiography of An Idea, and co-founded a neoconservative journal, The Public Interest.

He was a contributor to The Wall Street Journal, writing a series of essays in the 1970s that urged businesses to invest in conservative scholarship and counter the "permanent brain trust" of liberal politics.

The neoconservative movement was named by Michael Harrington, a socialist writer, in the early 1970s, and Kristol defined a neoconservative as a liberal who had been "mugged by reality."

Kristol was the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, born in New York's Brooklyn neighborhood.

econocrash updates: the fed, failures & bailout bust

geithner says auditing the fed is a 'line that we don't want to cross'
from corbett report: In an interview released today by Digg and the Wall Street Journal, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was pressured about the growing popular movement to Audit the Fed spearheaded by Texas Congressman Ron Paul. A visibly uncomfortable Geithner attempts to dismiss the question by stating "I'm sure people understand that you want to keep politics out of monetary policy." When Geithner is again pressed on the issue, he makes the stunning assertion that conducting an audit of the Federal Reserve—something never before done in its 96 year history—is a "line that we don't want to cross," proclaiming that such a move would be "problematic for the country."

Geithner's response that auditing the Fed would give politicians dangerous control over American monetary policy is mistaken at best and a deliberate lie at worst. Allowing the public to know what happened to their $24 trillion in bailout money does not give undue control of monetary policy to the people's elected representatives. Instead, such an audit would finally allow the public to see how their money has been spent in the midst of the largest spending binge in the history of the world's economy, hardly an unreasonable demand given the well-documented revolving door between the Treasury and Goldman Sachs, the main recipient of bailout funds. Ultimately, the Treasury Secretary is left spewing the absurdity that "I think even the sponsor of that bill recognizes how important it is to us to have the Fed independent of politics," which can only be said to be true insofar as Ron Paul—the sponsor of House Resolution (HR) 1207— wants to abolish the Federal Reserve system altogether.

police state usa: talking cameras, preemptive war & domestic troops

north hollywood installs 'talking cameras'

from infowars: North Hollywood is going the way of Baltimore, Martin County, and Middlesbrough, England. It has installed “talking cameras,” ostensibly to ward off taggers and people who dump trash. “Los Angeles police are using motion-activated cameras to warn vandals that they’re being watched,” reports WOAI for NBC News. “The motion triggers a recorded voice that states, ‘This is the Los Angeles Police Department. It is illegal to spray graffiti or dump trash here.’ The voice warns vandals that they are being recorded and will be prosecuted. The camera provides a high-resolution image of the tagger and the vehicle. It can capture an image of a license plate from 250 feet.”

gates expands preemptive war doctrine to include nuclear strikes
from wsws: In a remarkable speech on nuclear policy delivered October 28 at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP), US Defense Secretary Robert Gates painted a dire portrait of international affairs and argued that Washington should expand the doctrine of pre-emptive war formulated by the Bush administration to include possible nuclear strikes. It is widely rumored that, in the likely event that Democrat Barack Obama wins next week's US presidential election, Obama will keep Gates as defense secretary. Gates' speech, given in the waning days of the Bush presidency, has the character of a policy declaration of the next US administration.

the new technology of repression
from consortium news: In its final months, the Bush administration is pressing ahead with a new generation of spy technology designed to strengthen the U.S. military’s ability to detect and eliminate suspected insurgents in Iraq and elsewhere based on computer analyses of their movements and activities. The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has begun granting contracts to software firms to create algorithms (632kb PDF) that can be applied to the real-time video feeds from drone aircraft so the data can be sorted and stored on a wide range of human activities, from digging a ditch to climbing into a car to kissing someone.

'reorganizing US domestic intel': new report from rand
'reorganizing US domestic intel': new report from randfrom homestation: The question of whether the United States needs a new domestic intelligence service that is independent of law enforcement is examined by Greg Treverton of the RAND Corporation in a new report for Congress entitled "Reorganizing U.S. Domestic Intelligence." (1mb PDF)
"One of the questions in the fight against terrorism is whether the United States needs a dedicated domestic intelligence agency separate from law enforcement, on the model of many comparable democracies. To examine this issue, Congress directed that the Department of Homeland Security perform an independent study on the feasibility of creating a counterterrorism intelligence agency and the department turned to the RAND Corporation for this analysis but asked it specifically not to make a recommendation."

2 more combat units assigned to homeland brigade
2 more combat units assigned to homeland brigadefrom paul joseph watson: Northcom has announced that two more U.S. military units will be assigned for domestic homeland security missions, bringing the total number of combat ready service members operating inside the U.S. to around 4,700, as fears grow about the increasing militarization of law enforcement. The announcement follows the controversy surrounding a September 8 Army Times report (revised on September 30), which revealed that the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, fresh from combat duties in Iraq, would be operating inside America for tasks including “civil unrest and crowd control,” a detail that was later denied by Northcom despite the concession that forces would be armed with both non-lethal and lethal weapons as well as having access to tanks. “In the next three years the military plans to activate and train an estimated 4,700 service members for specialized domestic operations, according to Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, commander of U.S. Northern Command, which was created in 2002 for homeland defense missions,” reports the Colorado Independent.

US border police arrest mexican troops
from reuters: U.S. border police arrested seven Mexican soldiers after they accidentally strayed over the international boundary into Arizona, authorities said. The U.S. Border Patrol said agents encountered the troops in a Humvee a short distance north of the border near Yuma, in far west Arizona, early on Friday. "The Border Patrol agents on scene established a dialogue with the subjects, who identified themselves as members of the Mexican military," the Border Patrol said in a news release. "The ... agents informed them of their presence within the United States. Upon notification, the subjects were peaceably taken into custody," it added.

at&t to try limiting subscribers' data use, too
from latimes: AT&T Inc. customers who obsessively play World of Warcraft while downloading dozens of movies: Your days of online impunity may be numbered. AT&T has joined the ranks of telecommunications companies that are exploring the idea of limiting the amount of bandwidth that subscribers can use each month. The company began this month to apply such limits, testing the policy first in Reno. Subscribers to AT&T's slowest Internet service there will be limited to downloading 20 gigabytes of data per month. Those who subscribe to the fastest plan will be able to download as much as 150 gigabytes per month. Anyone who goes over the limit will pay $1 per extra gigabyte of data downloaded.

envirohealth: biodefense, flying syringes & vaccine protests

huge new biodefense lab is dedicated at ft detrick
huge new biodefense lab is dedicated at ft detrickfrom washington post: The Department of Homeland Security dedicated a massive biodefense laboratory in Frederick yesterday, moving toward the facility's opening despite questions raised about the risks of deadly pathogens to be studied there. When the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center at Fort Detrick is fully operational in March, about 150 scientists in the lab will be tasked with protecting the country from a bioterrorist attack through prevention or containment. Another goal is to allow investigators to fingerprint biological agents such as viruses and bacteria, quickly tracing their source and catching the offender. But critics cite the case of Bruce E. Ivins, a researcher at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, also at Fort Detrick, as evidence that such installations might help bioterrorists get access to lethal agents. FBI investigators think Ivins, who committed suicide in July, was responsible for the 2001 anthrax attacks.

fda conspired with chem industry to declare bpa harmless
from natural news: The FDA has been caught red-handed conspiring with the chemical industry to conclude that Bisphenol-A, the plastics chemical, is harmless to human health. As revealed by the Environmental Working Group, the FDA based its evaluation of BPA on a report authored by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), a trade group that represents chemical companies and plastics manufacturers. The FDA's evaluation concluded that BPA was perfectly safe for consumers of any age, including infants. This conclusion stands in direct opposition to the Canadian government, which declared BPA to be a toxic chemical on Oct. 18 and moved towards banning the chemical in baby bottles. Even the U.S. National Institutes of Health says BPA may be dangerous, admitting it is concerned about BPA's "effects on development of the prostate gland and brain and for behavioral effects in fetuses, infants and children."

what do we consider to be an act of war in cyberspace?

what do we consider to be an act of war in cyberspace?from washington times: U.S. military officials seeking to boost the nation's cyberwarfare capabilities are looking beyond defending the Internet: They are developing ways to launch virtual attacks on enemies.

But first the military will have to figure out the proper boundaries.

"What do we consider to be an act of war in cyberspace?" asked Lt. Gen. Robert J. Elder Jr., who heads the Air Force's cyberoperations command. "The military is not going to tend to do that (use virtual strike capabilities) until you cross some line that constitutes an act of war."

Elder said initial uses likely would be limited to diverting or killing data packets that threaten the nation's systems, the way the military may intercept a foreign ship carrying arms in international waters.

The remarks came late Friday during a New York chapter meeting of the Association For Intelligence Officers, a nonprofit group for current and former intelligence agents and their supporters.

israel's quiet killers
israel's quiet killersfrom danger room: "Wary Gaza militants using binoculars are on constant lookout for drones," the A.P. reports on the latest round of fighting with Israel... The U.S. employs many of the same tactics for similar purposes, flying Predator drones in Pakistan to quietly pick off suspected jihadists. I'm not sure about the cell phone connection: while the technology exists to track people by way of their phones, many drones employ more direct means of targeting, including daylight and IR sensors. The Taliban in Afghanistan is certainly convinced cell phones are a vulnerability, though.

psu class in top 10 'most dangerous' courses

psu class in top 10 'most dangerous' coursesfrom kgw: A conservative think tank has listed a Portland State University class as among America’s most dangerous college courses.

PSU Adjunct Professor Rick Rolf and his students will simultaneously celebrate and denounce the selection of his course, “Truth, Lies, Politics and Policy” by the Family Security Matters organization as one of “America’s Top Ten Most Dangerous College Courses,” Rolf said Tuesday.

He learned of his course’s selection from a student e-mail and at first thought it was a joke.

On a whim I Googled the list and couldn’t believe my eyes. We were ranked the '6th Most Dangerous Course in America,'" he said.

The group, Family Security Matters, says the class "Truth, Lies, Politics and Policy" is full of anti-American rhetoric.

Prof. Rick Rolf called the charges laughable and dangerous.

"I think this mean-spirited sort of action is exactly what they're trying to do is to muzzle people and to shut them down," he told KATU.
