#TitanicMemes: About Those Lifeboats...

#TitanicMemes: About Those Lifeboats...
from nytimes.com: The coming 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster (on April 15) hasn’t escaped the notice of the home video industry, whose eagle-eyed marketing executives have pounced on the opportunity to release what seems to be every known basic-cable documentary, television mini-series and feature film to examine the subject. It would probably take another hundred years to watch them all end to end, so rich has been our culture’s fascination with the Titanic, a tragedy large enough to provide a functioning allegory for the apocalypse, yet not so huge as to defy rational comprehension. This is a catastrophe you can get your mind around.

The king of this world is James Cameron’s 1997 romantic fantasy “Titanic,” which returns to theater screens on Wednesday, tricked out in a computer generated 3-D version. But there have been many other film versions, including “Saved From the Titanic,” a 1912 one-reeler starring Dorothy Gibson, who had actually survived the disaster and is credited as a co-writer, and a German propaganda film from 1943 that did not please Joseph Goebbels and was quickly banned. (The German “Titanic” was restored in 2004 and is available from Kino International.) The most sober in tone and historically reliable of the Titanic films remains Roy Ward Baker’s British production of 1958, “A Night to Remember.” An early release of the Criterion Collection, the film has now been reissued, in Blu-ray and standard definition, from a thoroughly restored print, accompanied by a generous selection of supplementary material.

last of US’s most powerful nuclear bombs dismantled in texas

b53 bomb dismantlement - victory or sideshow?*
last of US’s most powerful nuclear bombs dismantled in texasfrom reuters: The last of a powerful class of nuclear weapons introduced into the U.S. arsenal at the height of the Cold War in 1962 was being dismantled on Tuesday at a nuclear weapons storage facility outside Amarillo, Texas. "This was one of the largest bombs in the American arsenal," said Joshua McConaha, Public Affairs Director for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. He said the exact strength of the bomb -- known as the B53 and being dismantled at the DOE's B&W Pantex facility -- remains classified, but it is believed to have been many hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945.

troy davis execution goes ahead despite serious doubts about his guilt

troy davis execution goes ahead despite serious doubts about his guiltfrom guardian: Moments before he was put to death, Troy Davis lifted his head from the gurney to which he was strapped and looked the family of Mark MacPhail, the police officer for whose murder he was convicted, directly in the eyes. "I want to talk to the MacPhail family," he said. "I was not responsible for what happened that night. I did not have a gun. I was not the one who took the life of your father, son, brother." He then appealed to his own family and friends to "keep the faith", said to the medical personnel who were about to kill him "may God have mercy on your souls", and laid his head down again. He was administered with a triple lethal injection of pentobarbital, pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride, and at 11.08pm he was pronounced dead.

obamessiah threatens 'armageddon', warns US 'running out of time'

meanwhile, moody's suggests US eliminate debt ceiling...
obamessiah threatens 'armageddon', warns US 'running out of time'from afp: US President Barack Obama pressed polarized lawmakers Saturday to avert what he called economic "Armageddon" by quickly forging a deal to prevent an early August debt default by the world's richest country. "Simply put, it will take a balanced approach, shared sacrifice, and a willingness to make unpopular choices on all our parts," Obama said in his weekly radio address. "That means spending less on domestic programs," the president explained. "It means spending less on defense programs. ... And it means taking on the tax code, and cutting out certain tax breaks and deductions for the wealthiest Americans." The US government reached its debt limit of $14.29 trillion in May, and since then the Treasury Department has used special measures to allow the government to keep paying its bills. But unless the limit is raised by August 2, the Treasury says, growing spending and debt service commitments will force a default, which would have disastrous ripple effects throughout the global financial system.

weather wars continue as tornado destroys joplin, missouri

90 dead in joplin after deadliest US tornado in 60yrs
90 dead in joplin after deadliest US tornado in 60yrsfrom abc: The death toll in Joplin, Mo., rose to 90 today as officials described the monster tornado that hit the city as a "once in a generation event." Meteorological records show that this was the deadliest tornado since 1953 when a twister hit Worcester, Mass., and caused 90 fatalities. Rescuers shifted through rubble today looking for survivors as high winds and hail continues to plague the area. The tornado blasted a six mile wide path through the city and left trapped survivors crying out for help this morning. "You see pictures of World War II, the devastation and all that with the bombing. That's really what it looked like," Kerry Sachetta, the principal of Joplin High School, which was mangled by the tornado. "I couldn't even make out the side of the building. It was total devastation in my view. I just couldn't believe what I saw."

erykah badu gets naked & hits raw nerve at jfk killing scene

erykah badu gets naked & hits raw nerve at jfk killing scenefrom afp: Iconoclastic R&B singer Erykah Badu has struck a raw nerve in the United States, not just for stripping off in her new video but for being completely comfortable in her own skin precisely where John F. Kennedy was slain.

In her new video "Window Seat," filmed in Dallas, which lasts a longer-than-average five minutes and 35 seconds, Badu -- once known for her towering turbans -- progressively loses her clothes, keeps walking in black lingerie and then peacefully strips.

Badu, who was born in Dallas, in February 1971, just released a new CD "New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh."

Some of her fans were surprised at the public undress but she sent a message on microblog site Twitter saying "the people caught in the shot were trying hard to ignore me. LOL cept one guy grabbing clothes... it was the peeps off camera yelling."

Once appalled onlooker told her "THIS IS A PUBLIC PLACE : YOU OUGHTA BE ASHAMED : PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON : DAMN GIRL! etc," Badu added on the site, saying she has always shared her own vulnerable, naked truth.

A Dallas Morning News report cited police as saying Badu could face a charge for indecent exposure.

alleged alabama killer was suspect in attempted bombing of harvard professor in '93 & murdered her brother in '86from boston globe: The professor who is accused of killing three colleagues at the University of Alabama on Friday [feb12] was the main suspect in the attempted mail bombing of a Harvard Medical School professor and a Massachusetts police chief revealed Saturday that Bishop had fatally shot her brother in 1986... During a search of Bishop's computer, authorities found a draft of a novel that Bishop was writing about a female scientist who had killed her brother and was hoping to make amends by becoming a great scientist, according to a person who was briefed on the investigation and spoke to the Globe on the condition of anonymity.

now, the story of joe stack & another plane crashing into a building happened today, so all the dirt is slowly surfacing - such as the prior warnings, the hazmat teams being in place before the crash & surely we'll see this connected to tea party terronoia & homegrown errorism; go to legitgov for an archive of oddities, but for now a quick rundown...

man angry at irs crashes plane into buildingfrom ap: A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire that sent workers running for their lives... The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as A. Joseph Stack III, 53. Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on, said that before taking off, Stack apparently set fire to his house and posted a long anti-government screed on the Web. It was dated Thursday and signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)." In it, the author cited run-ins he had with the IRS and ranted about the tax agency, government bailouts and corporate America's "thugs and plunderers." .. "I have had all I can stand," he wrote, adding: "I choose not to keep looking over my shoulder at 'big brother' while he strips my carcass."

charlie wilson, fmr texas rep & mujahedeen funder, dead at 76

charlie wilson, fmr texas rep & mujahedeen funder, dead at 76from ap: Charlie Wilson, the fun-loving Texas congressman whose backroom dealmaking funneled millions of dollars in weapons to Afghanistan, allowing the country's underdog mujahedeen rebels to beat back the mighty Soviet Red Army, died Wednesday. He was 76. Wilson died at Memorial Medical Center-Lufkin after having difficulty breathing after attending a meeting in the eastern Texas town where he lived, said hospital spokeswoman Yana Ogletree. Wilson was pronounced dead on arrival, and the preliminary cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest, she said.

Wilson represented Texas' 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1973 to 1996 and was known in Washington as "Good Time Charlie" for his reputation as a hard-drinking womanizer. He once called former congresswoman Pat Schroeder "Babycakes," and tried to take a beauty queen with him on a government trip to Afghanistan.

Wilson, a Democrat, was considered both a progressive and a defense hawk. While his efforts to arm the mujahedeen in the 1980s were a success — spurring a victory that helped speed the downfall of the Soviet Union — he was unable to keep the money flowing after the Soviets left. Afghanistan plunged into chaos, creating an opening eventually filled by the Taliban, which harbored al-Qaida terrorists. After the Sept. 11 attacks — carried out by al-Qaida terrorists trained in Afghanistan — the U.S. ended up invading the country it had once helped liberate.
