US military 'spreading death' & meeting its recruitment goals

bleak US job market boosts military recruitment
from reuters: Aided by a bleak job market, the U.S. military met all of its recruitment goals in the past year for the first time since it became an all-volunteer force in 1973, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. Military services have been stretched thin by conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, giving added weight to recruitment efforts as President Barack Obama considers sending another 40,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan next year. The United States already has 67,000 troops in Afghanistan and about 119,000 in Iraq. Pentagon officials said recruitment gains were fueled by the deepest U.S. recession since the Great Depression and an unemployment rate nearing 10 percent.

woman imprisoned for selling to saddam was working for cia

from raw story: A Detroit-area businesswoman serving a six-year sentence in federal prison for selling goods to Iraq during the embargo against Saddam Hussein was unwittingly working for the CIA, the woman's supporters say.

According to NBC affiliate WDIV, Dawn Hanna of Rochester Hills, Michigan, was working for a CIA contractor when she arranged for telecommunications equipment to be sent to the Middle East in 2002 and 2003.

The person claiming to be that contractor, Emad Al-Yawer, says that he was working on a CIA plan to sell communications equipment to Saddam Hussein that would be bugged with espionage instruments. The plan was for the agency to locate and kill the Iraqi dictator.

"The whole idea was, once they get to Saddam, send a smart bomb and blow him [to] smithereens," Al-Yawer told WDIV. Al-Yawer's Jordanian company, Advanced Technical Systems, was the partner with whom Hanna worked to deliver the communications equipment.

The American president, in power just 9 months, was chosen over the 204 other people on this year's record length shortlist.

from cbsnews: Cindy Sheehan, dressed all in black with the words "greed kills" printed on her chest, was arrested by United States Park Police today after chaining herself to a White House fence as part of a protest against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to organizers, 61 people in total were arrested at the protest, which was also in service of efforts to "Close Guantanamo and Bagram, Surge Spending on Housing and Jobs."

Organizers said hundreds participated in the protest, which included poetry, song, and puppet heads of George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleezza Rice dressed in prison stripes.

While some protesters chained themselves to the White House fence, others lay on the ground, pretending to be dead, CNN reports. Organizers requested a meeting with President Obama to discuss their beliefs.

from abcnews: She’s back and this time, she’s here to stay. Cindy Sheehan says she is moving to Washington. The anti-war activist was outside the White House for the second day in a row, with a bullhorn and a handful of protestors, shouting against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Guantanamo and calling for “health care not warfare.”

Sheehan became a prominent voice against the Iraq war after her son Special Casey Sheehan was killed in Iraq 2004, and spent years hounding George W. Bush. Now, she’s turned her attention to President Barack Obama, recently following him on his family vacation to Martha’s Vineyard, and now planning to move to D.C. sometime this winter. Sheehan says she sees no difference between the foreign policy of the last president and this one.

“Sometimes I look at what I think Senator McCain would be doing, and what Obama’s doing and I can’t discern any difference. And I think that Obama’s foreign policy is obviously a continuation. When you have Robert Gates. When you have McChrystal. When you have Hillary Clinton, who is supposed to be the secretary of state, but who has always been for these wars of aggression. I see is clearly a continuation, a continuation of the policy of empire,” Sheehan told ABC News.

neocon godfather & trotskyite, irving kristol, dead at 89

from aljazeera: Irving Kristol, the political writer whose right-wing ideology heavily influenced the previous US administration of President George Bush, has died at 89 after battling lung cancer. Known as the "godfather" of American neoconservatism, his death in the US state of Virginia on Friday was announced by the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, run by his son William.

Although he did not comment much in public on the war in Iraq, prominent neoconservatives inside and outside the Bush administration played a major role in pushing for the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002, praising him as "a wide-ranging thinker whose writings have helped transform America's political landscape."

While attending college in New York in the 1930s, Kristol was a follower of the Russian Communist Leon Trotsky.

Perceived failures
He later soured on socialism and became a liberal, but also left those ideas behind as he became increasingly disillusioned by the perceived failures of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, which government programmes did not manage to solve problems such as the rise of crime and drug abuse.

During the rise of the New Left in the 1960s and 1970s, Kristol finally became a supporter of the Republican Party, which he said was once as "foreign to me as attending a Catholic mass".

He became a flagship in the network of think-tanks, media outlets and corporations that helped make US conservatism a reigning ideology for at least two decades.

"The influence of Irving Kristol's ideas has been one of the most important factors in reshaping the American climate of opinion over the past 40 years," said Norman Podhoretz, another neoconservative theorist.

'Mugged by reality'
Kristol released several books, including Neo-Conservatism: The Autobiography of An Idea, and co-founded a neoconservative journal, The Public Interest.

He was a contributor to The Wall Street Journal, writing a series of essays in the 1970s that urged businesses to invest in conservative scholarship and counter the "permanent brain trust" of liberal politics.

The neoconservative movement was named by Michael Harrington, a socialist writer, in the early 1970s, and Kristol defined a neoconservative as a liberal who had been "mugged by reality."

Kristol was the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, born in New York's Brooklyn neighborhood.

house approves $106b bill to fund wars in afghaniraq

from washington post: The House today passed a $106 billion bill funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through September, as House Democrats backed President Obama despite misgivings among the ranks about his strategy in Afghanistan.

The 226 to 202 vote came after Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner had called some reluctant Democrats during the day imploring them to back the bill, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) had strongly pressed her colleagues in a closed-door meeting to vote for the bill in a show of support for Obama, even if they oppose his strategy for increasing troops in Afghanistan. In the end, 221 Democrats voted for the bill, while 32 opposed it.

All but five Republicans opposed the bill after the White House inserted money to fund a line of credit for the International Monetary Fund, which the GOP said amounted to a "global bailout."

"We are in the process of wrapping up the wars. The president needed our support," said Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), who had earlier said he opposed the war funding but voted for it in the end. "But the substance still sucks."

from raw story: One week after declaring that the United States “cannot afford” the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq “financially or spiritually,” Ohio’s Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a staunch anti-war crusader, took aim at Congress for not taking a more active role in any of the war on terror fronts.

“We are destroying our nation’s moral and fiscal integrity with this war supplemental... Instead of ending wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan now by appropriating only enough money to bring our troops home, Congress abdicates its constitutional authority, defers to the president, and asks for a report. That’s right, all we are asking for is a report on when the president will end the war... There is also money for the IMF, presumably to bail out private European banks. Billions for the IMF so they can force low and middle income nations to cut jobs, wages, health care and retirement security, just like corporate America does to our constituents. And there’s money to incentivize the purchase of more cars, not necessarily from U.S. manufacturers because a ‘Buy America’ mandate was not allowed... Another $106 billion dollars and all we get is a lousy war... Pretty soon that is going to be about the only thing made in America – war.”

from steve watson: The House has passed a war funding bill which had tagged onto it a completely unrelated provision to hand over $5 billion to secure $108 billion in loans to the IMF. The chamber voted 226 to 202 yesterday to forward the legislation to the Senate, which may take it up later this week, reports Bloomberg News. The measure in the bill will also increase the U.S. member contribution to the IMF by $8 billion and authorize the United States to back the IMF’s plan to sell 400 tons (12.97 million ounces) of gold. It was placed in the bill at the behest of the Obama administration in order to fulfil the president’s pledge to the G20 in April, to contribute toward a $500 billion boost for the IMF, which it says will go toward “helping poorer nations” during the economic downturn.
