from cbs/ap: A 26-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested and accused of plotting to attack the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol with large remote-controlled aircraft filled with explosives. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that U.S. officials say the suspect, Rezwan Ferdaus was deadly serious about his plans, but the plot had no chance of succeeding. Ferdaus, an U.S. citizen and Northeastern University graduate, went by the name "Bollywood" when he played in a Massachusetts band. However, U.S. officials say the drummer is also a self-radicalized jihadist, intent on attacking Americans in the U.S. and overseas. Ferdaus now faces charges of plotting attacks and supporting a foreign terrorist organization. Ferdaus was arrested after he bought what he believed to be 25 pounds of plastic explosives, three grenades and six automatic assault rifles from undercover FBI agents posing as al Qaeda operatives.

latest government shutdown crisis averted... for a month

from dpa: The US Senate passed a spending measure late Monday that for the third time this year averted a government shutdown over spending disagreements. A request for additional emergency money had threatened to bring the US government to a standstill again amid wrangling in Congress, until Senate leaders announced an agreement that avoided the issue altogether. The Senate passed 79-12 a short-term funding measure that will keep the government running through mid-November. The upper chamber of Congress avoided a looming shutdown over a request for additional money for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The agency had earlier said it needed additional money to make it through the fiscal year. But the disaster agency indicated Monday that it might be able to stretch its budget through to the end of week, when the budget year ends.

#OccupyWallStreet US police 'maced peaceful protesters' in new york

from channel4: The #OccupyWallStreet campaign said police confined a small number of protesters before spraying them with mace. Clips of the alleged incident have appeared across social media – however, Channel 4 News cannot verify the footage independently. The New York Police Department has so far not responded to a Channel 4 News request for its response to the allegations. Protesters say they want to show their anger at, among other things, corporate greed and social inequality. So far, it is reported more than 100 people have been arrested... Police tactics have been compared to those used during the 2004 Republican convention when the NYPD made sweeping arrests of several hundred demonstrators before dropping charges against almost all of them... The alleged mace incident is the latest clash between campaigners and police since the occupation began on 17 September. Over the past few days, police barricades have prevented protesters from reaching the United Nations where the general assembly has been meeting.

from cnsnews: The Internet has risen to its all-time high as a primary source of news for Americans with 43 percent now saying they get most of their news on national and international issues from the web, according to a survey published Thursday by the Pew Research Center for The People & The Press. Meanwhile, television sits at an all-time low as a primary source of news for Americans with only 66 percent now saying they get most of their national and international news from TV–a nadir television also hit in December 2010.

troy davis execution goes ahead despite serious doubts about his guilt

from guardian: Moments before he was put to death, Troy Davis lifted his head from the gurney to which he was strapped and looked the family of Mark MacPhail, the police officer for whose murder he was convicted, directly in the eyes. "I want to talk to the MacPhail family," he said. "I was not responsible for what happened that night. I did not have a gun. I was not the one who took the life of your father, son, brother." He then appealed to his own family and friends to "keep the faith", said to the medical personnel who were about to kill him "may God have mercy on your souls", and laid his head down again. He was administered with a triple lethal injection of pentobarbital, pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride, and at 11.08pm he was pronounced dead.

from abcnews: American icon Tony Bennett took to the airwaves at Sirius Radio to promote his new album, “Duets II,” but it’s what he said about war, peace, terrorism, and who was to blame for the Sept. 11 terror attacks that could get people talking. Sitting down with Howard Stern on Monday, the 85-year-old singer dodged questions about his sex life and prior drug use. He did so with a laugh, but matters about the U.S. military and 9/11 were fair game, and on these topics the Grammy winner held little back...

Bennett, 65 years after leaving his military life behind, has sold over 50 million albums and developed definite opinions about other wars involving the United States. “To start a war in Iraq was a tremendous, tremendous mistake internationally,” he said. Stern then asked Bennett about how America should deal with terrorists, specifically those responsible for the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. “But who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don’t make a right,” Bennett said.

In a soft-spoken voice, the singer disagreed with Stern’s premise that 9/11 terrorists’ actions led to U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. “They flew the plane in, but we caused it,” Bennett responded. “Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.” Following seconds of silence, Stern said that his guest was “making some good points.”

netflix separates dvd business as 'qwikster', adds video games

from businessweek: Netflix Inc. plans to separate its mail-order DVD business from movie streaming, a move the company said will give both businesses a better chance to grow. Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, will create a wholly owned DVD-by-mail subsidiary called Qwikster “in coming weeks,” Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings said in a blog post yesterday. The company doesn't plan to spin off the DVD division, said Steve Swasey, a spokesman. Customers will have to log in to separate websites for the two services and will be billed separately. The change may alienate users who were attracted to the convenience of a single site for both, according to James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research. Netflix fell 26 percent over two days last week after cutting its subscriber forecast.

#OccupyWallStreet protestors begin descent on lower manhattan

from ibtimes: Protestors involved with the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstration have started their pilgrimage toward Wall Street, where they have started to set up camp for an indeterminable amount of time in order to curb the influence of big business over Washington lawmakers. As of noon, hundreds of protestors gathered at Bowling Green Park in Manhattan, home of the iconic charging bull in New York's Financial District as they prepare to "take the bull by the horns," as one flyer said, ABC News reported.

"The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%," said a statement on the Occupy Wall Street Web site. Apparently the movement, which is an offshoot of online magazine AdBusters, is angered by what it calls the principle of "profit over and above all else." This, they say, has dominated America's economic policies and the way in which Americans view culture and humanity.

Ironic, you say, that an organization known for secrecy is doling out helpful hints to Hollywood? The CIA doesn’t think so. For them it’s all about image control. And they’re just the start of it. The Department of Defense and just about every branch of the military has an entertainment industry liaison similar to the CIA’s.

If you want to make a war film and need a fleet of F-22s, a crowd of Marines, or a Navy aircraft carrier, just call up the Department of Defense’s entertainment media office and they’ll tell you if the Army can spare that M1A1 Abrams tank you’ve always wanted for a day or two of filming.

“The scripts we get are only the writer’s idea of how the Department of Defense operates,” Vince Ogilvie, deputy director of the Defense Department’s entertainment liaison office, told Danger Room. “We make sure the Department and facilities and people are portrayed in the most accurate and positive light possible.” ...

OK, fair enough I guess, but why has the Defense Department recently partnered with 20th Century Fox to make an X-Men/U.S. Army ad or with explosion-enthusiast Michael Bay to make all three Transformers movies? In The Washington Post, David Sirota suggests entertainment like this is “government-subsidized propaganda.”
