from guardian: Sears Holdings Corp plans to close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores after poor sales during the holidays, the most crucial time of year for retailers. The closings are the latest and most visible in a long series of moves to try to fix a retailer that has struggled with falling sales and shabby stores. In an internal memo Tuesday to employees, CEO and President Lou D'Ambrosio said that the retailer had not "generated the results we were seeking during the holiday." Sears Holdings Corp said it has yet to determine which stores will close but said it will post on its website when a final list is compiled. Sears would not discuss how many, if any, jobs would be cut.

from clyde lewis: As the cold blows its bitterness and the snows cling to the ground this Christmas, we find ourselves in a very precarious position this year. Many people are happy at Christmas; however there is a silent group who see the holidays as a dark and foreboding time. This goes beyond the “humbug” of Scrooge or the burglary of the Grinch. It may be the depression of some inflexible middle age, staring into the glass of scotch wherein the murky amber elixir, the future is cloudy and the sadness is heavy. This type of year is appropriately called the dark times. Where the soul is eclipsed and the body grows tired, weary of the cold and yearning for love. Childhood memories of boxes, bows, puppies, and tinsel are pounded away by the realities of debt and the pressures of family and work.

portland 'tree bomber plot' brings homegrown terronoia to oregon

from the oregonian: The FBI thwarted an attempted terrorist bombing in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square before the city's annual tree-lighting Friday night, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Oregon.

A Corvallis man, thinking he was going to ignite a bomb, drove a van to the corner of the square at Southwest Yamhill Street and Sixth Avenue and attempted to detonate it.

However, the supposed explosive was a dummy that FBI operatives supplied to him, according to an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint signed Friday night by U.S. Magistrate Judge John V. Acosta.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a Somali-born U.S. citizen, was arrested at 5:42 p.m., 18 minutes before the tree lighting was to occur, on an accusation of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation, during which Mohamud had been monitored for months as his alleged bomb plot developed.

"The device was in fact inert, and the public was never in danger," according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The investigation involved the FBI, Oregon State Police, Portland Police Bureau, Corvallis Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Mohamud will appear in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday.

the war of christmas: murder, suicide, norad & santas

from no one has to die tomorrow: As if Christmas had not been destroyed enough by consumerism, here comes NORAD pushing their propaganda on the young believers. NORAD has a website to 'track' Santa's whereabouts, and they are using Rudolph's rfid red nose to follow the jolly old elf. The push of an armed escort into Santa's itinerary is an obvious attempt to condition children to accept the control grid, (it is of course out of love, and above all else, safety). They even use 9/11 to help define NORAD's purpose on their Santa tracking website, of course they leave out the part where they stood down that day. Why does the man who operates solely on magic need NORAD? He doesn't, it is NORAD who needs Santa's magic; to con the children. Get them young and hit them in a vulnerable spot, Bernays would be proud. NORAD should stick to standing down and leave the minds of our children alone.

Investigators planned to return to the scene Friday and sift through the ashes of the home, which Pardo set ablaze using a bizarre homemade device that sprayed flammable liquid.

"It's truly frightening when you see something like this evolve into such violence," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

The MasoniCHIP program provides parents with their child's dental imprints, fingerprints, still photos and a short video. "It's a child identification program," explained Tyler Deheer of Princeton's Blenheim 108 Masonic Lodge, one of the organizers of Saturday's program. All the equipment needed to make an identification profile of a child was contained in a single briefcase, including a laptop computer, a webcam, a microphone and a fingerprint scanner. "The parents keep all the information. It comes on a CD and a piece of paper. It puts everything in a neat package," Deheer said, adding that the material could be given to police in the event the child goes missing. "It holds just about anything you could use to identify a child." The program originated in the United States and Masons in Ontario have taken the lead role in implementing the program in this province.

She was one of the few artists to be nominated in the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award categories and was a stalwart of the Manhattan cabaret scene. She famously played Catwoman in the Batman television series in the 1960s and was known for her distinctive, feline drawl. from ap: Police say the actor who portrayed the gay lover of a closeted mobster on "The Sopranos" has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in New York. Police spokesman Lt. John Grimpel says John Costelloe was found dead in an apparent suicide at his Brooklyn home on Dec. 18. Police were called to his residence after family members were unable to reach him. The 47-year-old former New York City firefighter gained fame in 2006 when he was cast as short-order cook Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski opposite Joseph Gannascoli, who played gay mobster Vito Spatafore on the hit HBO show. Costelloe was performing as a hustler in a theater production of "Gang of Seven" at the time of his death.

final midnight mass at ground zero

from monsters & critics: The first midnight Mass at ground zero was celebrated as workers were still clearing debris from the World Trade Center after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Increased construction is picking up at the World Trade Center site in New York.

The last Mass was held Monday night, giving police, firefighters, recovery workers and victims' families a final chance to pray on Christmas Eve at the site, where construction is increasingly taking up open space.

"A lot of us felt sad this was the last official midnight Mass on-site, but at the same time, there was a sense of relief. This brought closure for us," the Rev. Brian Jordan said early Tuesday after the service ended. A chaplain who spent 10 months at ground zero after September 11, he has since presided over every midnight Mass there.

CNN reports that 75 people attended the Mass.

from raw story: With Americans expected to spend about almost $500 billion this Christmas, ABC's 'Nightline' takes a closer look at one man trying spread the message that America is being crushed under the weight of consumerism.

"We're proceeding into the shopping season under an enormous misunderstanding. We think we are consumers at Christmas time," shouted the flamboyant Rev. Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping. "No, we are being consumed!"

Talen is an activist and performance artist who's made his presence known at malls and chain stores in New York City. His efforts to halt what he and his followers call the "shopocalypse" have been chronicled in a new documentary, 'What Would Jesus Buy?' In the film, Talen is shown being kicked out of a Starbucks, performing an exorcism at Wal-Mart headquarters, and getting arrested in front of a Disney store.

"I think the commercial Christmas has become the Grinch," says Talen. "Polls indicate that most Americans now think of Christmas with dread rather than happy anticipation, and that's sad."
