♬Liner Notes♬: This is another great set of nearly non-stop sounds from Local Natives, Josh Ritter, Chromatics and so much more... and the mix is pretty sweet, too, if I do say so myself - so sit back, put your headphones on and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Josh Ritter
"New Lover"
'The Beast In Its Tracks'
Pytheas, 2013
Note: NPR's First Listen says that "As one of the most thoughtful singer-songwriters around, Josh Ritter isn't one to write angry, over-the-top, knee-jerk breakup songs — even though his new album, The Beast in Its Tracks, was written entirely in response to his own recent divorce... In "New Lover," Ritter feigns best wishes en route to a bitterly funny punchline, and along the way backhandedly accepts what passes for responsibility."

Beach Fossils
"Careless"
'Clash The Truth'
Captured Tracks, 2013
Note: For the second week in a row we get new music from the band that song source KEXP says "Lead by Brooklyn musician Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils’ dreamy guitar-driven pop is rooted as much in songcraft as much as it is in space... “Careless”, the first single from Clash The Truth, is a wistful, reverb-soaked tune... "

Spinto Band
"Shake It Off"
'Cool Cocoon'
Spintonic, 2013
Note: Last heard waay back on Episode018, the long-running indie band from Delaware returns to PUTV with a new record in less than a year since the last one. Pitchfork says "With its color wheel-spinning palette, sticky, curlicued melodies, and poignant lyrical reflections, Cool Cocoon is an occasionally breathtaking highwire walk between craft and genuine feeling that builds confidently on its predecessor."
(More Info)

Little Ones
"Little Souls"
'The Dawn Sang Along'
Branches Recording Collective, 2013
Note: "The cutesy indie pop sunshine emanating from The Dawn Sang Along could fit into commercials quite easily... The retro synths on “Little Souls” keep the listening easy, the comfortable breeze of ’80s pop melding with an equally lithe Caribbean rhythmic warmth."
(More Info)

Local Natives
"Breakers"
'Hummingbird'
Frenchkiss, 2013
Note: Again, song source KEXP says "Local Natives’ ornate blend of ’00s indie rock and beach-ready harmonies is as ebullient as it is propulsive... “Breakers” is as much of a reintroduction as it is a evolution; it’s the sound of a band losing their youthful naivety through personal loss, slowly recovering, and subsequently maturing, all in four minutes."
(More Info)

John Grant
"Black Belt"
'Pale Green Ghosts'
Partisan, 2013
Note: Stereogum says, "The former Czars frontman John Grant is a world traveler who’s made a ton of music in a bunch of different genres... But now Grant is living in Iceland, and he’s about to release a chilly disco-house album called Pale Green Ghosts, recorded with Biggi Veira of Gus Gus — and as it turns out, the style fits his voice perfectly."
(More Info)

Sin Fang
"Look At The Light"
'Flowers'
Morr, 2013
Note: We heard from Sin Fang back on Episode032 and, like song source KEXP says, "It wasn’t too long ago that we featured Sindri Már Sigfússon’s project Sin Fang for a Song of the Day podcast, but that was from his recent Half Dreams EP, a sort of gathering of inter-album strays. His newly released third full-length, Flowers, though, recorded and produced by Alex Somers (Sígur Rós, Jónsi), finds the ideas germinated throughout Sindri’s past career in full bloom."
(More Info)

Amor De Dias
"In The Winter Sun"
'The House at Sea'
Merge, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode044, the duo returns to PUTV while "Recalling a breezy 70's aesthetic, Amor de Días is a collaborative effort between The Clientele's Alasdair MacLean and Spanish singer Lupe Núñez-Fernández. Their bilingual recording, The House at Sea, is filled with Spanish guitars and bittersweet songs."
(More Info)

Big Harp
"You Can't Save 'Em All"
'Chain Letters'
Saddle Creek, 2013
Note: "From the pained apathy of "You Can't Save 'Em All" to the cracked parade march of "Call Out the Cavalry, Strike Up the Band," Chain Letters finds the band enveloping and exploding their literate songs with fuzzed-out, needle-sharp textures."
(More Info)

Carly Ritter
"It Don't Come Easy"
'Carly Ritter'
Vanguard, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Carly Ritter grew up surrounded by music, but credits her extended musical family for the authentic sound on her debut self-titled recording. Backed by Juliette Commagere, Joachim Cooder, Robert Francis and legendary guitarist Ry Cooder, Ritter's songs hearken back to folk songs of the 60's." Meanwhile, her label's press release says "The rich, burnished, folk-rooted sound of Carly Ritter’s self-titled debut album makes it seem that this music was unearthed from a time capsule buried during the late ’60s, with its distinct echoes of Jackie DeShannon, Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Stone Poneys and, on one especially whimsical track, the Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood partnership."
(More Info)

Wild Cub
"Color"
'Youth'
Big Light, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "In a city defined by its musical exports, Nashville’s Wild Cub have made a name for themselves by, well, not sounding like they’re exports from Nashville... As its title implies, “Colour” is a vibrant and buzzing ode to reckless love that never collapses under its own ragged glory, and when Dewitt croons, “I need you alone... alone”, it’s hard not to be a little jealous of the 21st century Molly Ringwald that it was written for."
(More Info)

Van Stee
"Color In The Paper Planes"
'We Are'
Humans Win!, 2013
Note: Van Stee was featured on our very first episode! City Pages says that "For Charlie Van Stee, it took getting weird to get discovered... From those modest beginnings ultimately rose the album We Are, one of the more impressively produced and instantly impactful debuts by a Twin Cities band in recent memory. Running the gamut from drugged-out-but-danceable sonic experiments like the title track to instantly accessible and pristine indie-pop ("Color in the Paper Planes"), the quintet balances sweeping traditional songcraft with eccentric but effective detours."
(More Info)

Ballake Sissoko
"Kabou"
'At Peace'
Six Degrees, 2013
Note: NPR says "Two years ago, Malian musician Ballake Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Segal beguiled the NPR Music staff with their magical debut collaboration... After their initial project and ensuing tours that took them around the world together, Sissoko and Segal are still collaborators on this new album, called At Peace."
(More Info)

Chromatics
"Cherry"
'After Dark II'
Italians Do It Better, 2013
Note: And finally, we close out this week's episode with the return of Portland, Oregon's quartet to PUTV for the first time since Episode010. Song source KEXP says "Chromatics have given us some pretty stellar cuts over the years, so among singles like this one above, it’s hard to pick favorites... And with time, Chromatics only become more lovable and accessible, despite continuing to challenge themselves creatively. The Italians Do It Better compilation After Dark II hosts a few newly unfurled Chromatics tracks, and no doubt, “Cherry” is the cream of the crop."
