first shots mark 150 years since start of US civil war

first shots mark 150 years since start of US civil warfrom reuters: In the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, about two dozen Union Army re-enactors raised a 33-star American flag over Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor.

Soon after, a signal shot from a nearby fort sparkled in the air and cannon fire commenced, just as it did 150 years ago to begin the American Civil War.

The first shots fired on April 12, 1861, marked the start of what would be a defining time in U.S. history. The Civil War took 620,000 American lives and ended the country's institution of slavery.

The National Park Service and the city of Charleston aimed for the sesquicentennial events to be both inclusive and true to history.

"Four million enslaved African Americans saw this as their revolution," said Robert Sutton, chief historian of the National Park Service, whose theme for the sesquicentennial nationwide is "Civil War to Civil Rights."

"Today we commemorate the beginning of the Civil War, but we also celebrate the fact that more people were freed from slavery at that time than at any time in world history."

US unprepared for nuclear emergency

nuke officials worry about plans despite public assurances
US unprepared for nuclear emergencyfrom allgov: The federal agency charged with ensuring the nation’s security against disasters admitted last year in a confidential report that the United States is ill-prepared to deal with a significant release of radiation.

Coming on the heels of Japan’s nuclear crisis, the news of the Department of Homeland Security report raises serious concerns about the lack of attention government officials have given to radiation threats, whether it stems from a terrorist attack (such as a “dirty bomb”) or a natural disaster impacting a power plant.

The Homeland Security study found that the health system “can only handle a few radiation injuries at any one time” and that “there is no strategy for notifying the public in real time of recommendations on shelter or evacuation priorities.”

Compounding the lack of preparation is the fact that the federal government two years ago ceased stockpiling potassium iodide, the best-known agent to counter radioactive iodine-induced thyroid cancer in young people.

Another report produced in 2010, from the Council on State and Territorial Epidemiologists, concluded that nearly half of all states have no radiation plan for areas outside federally-mandated nuclear power plant emergency zones. The report also stated that about 85% of officials surveyed said their states could not properly respond to a radiation incident because of inadequate planning, resources, staffing and partnerships.

According to a report in the journal Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, if a major nuclear bomb were to hit Washington D.C., there would be a need for about 61,000 beds in intensive care units. However, there are only 118,000 intensive care beds in the entire United States and, on any given day, only 9,400 are free.

sidney lumet, director of 'network' & '12 angry men', dies at 86

acclaimed director's films explored social issues
sidney lumet, director of 'network' & '12 angry men', dies at 86from cbsnews: Acclaimed filmmaker Sidney Lumet, who died today at the age of 86, left a legacy of classic films, many of which dealt with crime and justice - "12 Angry Men," "The Anderson Tapes," "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," "Murder on the Orient Express," "Night Falls on Manhattan," to name just a few.

But as great as they are, they pale next to "Network," the 1976 satire of television that won four Oscars. Written by Paddy Cheyefsky (who, like Lumet, got his start in live television in the 1950s), the film tells of a broadcast network's news division taken over by an entertainment executive (Faye Dunaway) who had unusual ideas about journalism.

Peter Finch earned an Oscar for his performance as Howard Beale, the news anchor knocked off the air for mental instability, only to be returned in front of the cameras as a ratings driver in the guise of a "mad prophet of the airwaves." His message: don't believe what you see and hear on TV. The audience eats it up.

In the clip below, Beale - who has been wandering the streets in the rain - arrives at the studio to deliver not the news but a challenge to his audience, and to society in general, to reject feeling powerless against the political and media forces of the world.

banksters warn US to hit debt ceiling by may16

banksters warn US to hit debt ceiling by may16from reuters: The United States will hit the legal limit on its ability to borrow no later than May 16, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Monday, ramping up pressure on Congress to act to avoid a debt default. "The longer Congress fails to act, the more we risk that investors here and around the world will lose confidence in our ability to meet our commitments and our obligations," Geithner said in a letter to congressional leaders. "Default by the United States is unthinkable."

Previously, the Treasury had forecast that the $14.3 trillion statutory debt limit would be reached between April 15 and May 31. As of Friday, Treasury borrowing stood just $95 billion from the ceiling. Some Republican lawmakers have sought to use the need to raise the debt limit as a lever to pressure the Obama administration into agreeing on large-scale budget cuts.

The debt-limit showdown comes as Congress struggles to complete a spending package that would keep the government operating beyond Friday. Republicans are seeking to use that bill to enact deep spending cuts and lawmakers are focusing on a proposal to trim this year's budget by $33 billion, a relatively small amount compared with a projected $1.4 trillion deficit.

Geithner said a failure to raise the debt ceiling in a timely way would push interest rates higher and spark "a financial crisis potentially more severe than the crisis from which we are only starting to recover." Both Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have said a failure to raise the ceiling could have "catastrophic consequences."

yes we can! (but please don't): obamessiah launches 2012 psyop

yes we can! (but please don't): obamessiah launches 2012 psyopfrom washington post: President Obama’s decision to launch his 2012 reelection campaign Monday is about much more than money. It is an acknowledgment by the president’s team that the grass-roots army that helped propel Obama to the White House needs repair and rejuvenation.

That corps of volunteers defined the character and personality of Obama’s first run for the White House. It was in many ways an organic movement, which sprang to life in 2007 and gathered momentum through the course of the campaign. Since then it has atrophied.

Obama advisers know his reelection will depend on many things, some of which are out of their control. What they also know is that a victory will rely in part on their ability to reenergize those volunteers, to stitch together the unusual coalition of African Americans, Latinos, young people, women and college-educated white voters who backed Obama in 2008. That is within their control.

Monday’s headlines focused on Obama’s “billion-dollar campaign” and the lengths to which campaign manager Jim Messina, among others, has begun the process of stroking big donors and setting big targets for fundraising.

The desire to start raising money early should not be underestimated. Obama was extraordinarily successful raising money in small donations in 2008. His haul from the Internet — hundreds of millions of dollars — underscored the bottom-up nature of his candidacy.
