At SXSW Media Zoo, 'Convergence' Is Annual Buzz Word

from ap: Increasingly, the media zoo that is SXSW looks more like today’s overlapping media world. The annual South by Southwest Conference and Festival, which begins Friday, gathers thousands of creators, performers, media and industry members for 10 days onto the boozy downtown streets of Austin, Texas. It’s really three festivals — Interactive, Film and Music — in one, but each bleeds into the other. The annual buzz word at SXSW is always convergence. Just as the tech and entertainment worlds physically descend onto Austin, media forms, too, are diverging. Many of those technologies and companies that might be found at SXSW Interactive have greatly altered those at SXSW Film (video-on-demand, Netflix, Hulu) and at SXSW Music (Apple, Spotify, Pandora). It’s a place where the question is always “what’s next’’ and one has the impression of meandering hordes traipsing the streets of Austin searching for answers to a confusing and ever-evolving media landscape. There will be hundreds of panel discussions, countless predictions and even man vs. machine competitions that pit algorithms against curators. "It’s like stepping into a temporary world for one week where you’re maybe two or three or five years in the future," says Amber Case, who’ll be making her fourth trip to SXSW as a keynote speaker for Interactive. She’s a "cyborg anthropologist" who studies the relationship between humans and machines, and founded the location-sharing platform Geoloqi.com.

Camp David, Not Chicagoland, to Host G8

from nytimes.com: President Obama has boasted for months about playing host to the annual summit meeting of the Group of 8 industrialized nations this May in his hometown, Chicago. But on Monday, without explanation, the White House announced a shift to the secluded setting of Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

Administration officials and associates, speaking only on condition of anonymity, said the president in recent weeks began discussing the idea of a more intimate setting for the world leaders — both to ease their communications and to cut down on the security concerns and traffic tie-ups of a big-city meeting.

Also, several noted, attendees will include Vladimir V. Putin, a harsh critic of the United States, who will return as Russia’s president after his election on Sunday.

“To facilitate a free-flowing discussion with our close G-8 partners, the president is inviting his fellow G-8 leaders to Camp David on May 18-19 for the G-8 Summit, which will address a broad range of economic, political and security issues,” the brief White House statement said. Camp David is about an hour from Washington and open only to the president and people he invites.

Still, the change was unusual given the months-long lead time that such events require.

Stocks gain on Greece, Dow briefly hits 13,000

from reuters: Stocks rose on Tuesday, with the Dow briefly topping 13,000 for the first time since May 2008 after Greece secured a bailout to avoid a March default, but gains were limited as investors had priced in expectations of a deal. Signs of improvement in the economy and stabilization of Europe's debt crisis have driven the Dow more than 20 percent since late last year, while the S&P has climbed more than 8 percent so far this year. Euro zone finance ministers agreed on a 130-billion-euro ($172 billion) rescue for Greece to avert an imminent chaotic default after forcing Athens to commit to unpopular cuts and private bondholders to take bigger losses. "This is the most solid agreement Greece has had, with actual money behind it, and that makes the market optimistic," said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at PFG Best in Chicago.

'The Simpsons' marks 500th episode, Assange guest stars

#Simpsons500 Long-time followers of Media Monarchy know that we're long-time fans of 'The Simpsons' ... Interestingly, last night's episode featured a fake disaster drill distraction put forth by corporate-controlled media - guest starring Julian Assange!

from afp: The Simpsons, the long-running US television animated comedy show, reached its landmark 500th episode Sunday, with an appearance from controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. America's most famous dysfunctional cartoon family have played out their lives before a worldwide audience for over two decades since the distinctive yellow characters Homer, Maggie and children Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first burst onto American TV in 1989. The series has become the longest-running comedy in US television history and in its 23rd season is currently the longest-running primetime scripted show. In the 500th show, Homer and Marge discover Springfield residents are holding a secret meeting to kick them out of town, for all the trouble they've caused over the years. After being sent into exile, the Simpsons arrange to meet with Assange in a bid to clear their names. The show's executive producer Al Jean acknowledged last month that Assange, who leaked massive amounts of sensitive diplomatic and military documents, was a controversial figure.
