from foxnews: Rescuers frantically searched for survivors amid mounds of concrete, twisted steel and construction debris Monday, a day after a 7.2-magnitude quake leveled buildings and killed at least 279 people in eastern Turkey. The search for survivors had continued through the night, with some successes, but officials acknowledged they were powerless to prevent a steep rise in the death toll after Sunday afternoon's earthquake -- the biggest to rock the country in more than a decade.

from kurt nimmo: On Tuesday, the Justice Department announced it had uncovered a plot by Iran to enlist a member of a Mexican drug cartel to kill Saudi Arabia’s envoy in Washington, D.C. The FBI and the DEA uncovered the plot, according to officials. The FBI has a long track record of using informers and agents provocateurs to entrap dupes who are then described as dangerous terrorists.

Manssor Arbabsiar, a naturalized U.S. citizen holding an Iranian passport, allegedly arranged for the assassination by contacting a man he thought worked for a Mexican drug cartel, but was in fact a DEA agent. Arbabsiar was arrested on September 29 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport...

Gholam Shakuri, described as Arbabsiar’s contact, has also been charged in connection with the alleged plot but remains at large.

The plot was not Arbabsiar’s idea. It was suggested by the DEA agent, who told Arbabsiar that he would need four men to carry out the assassination and that his price was $1.5 million, according to Channel 6 News.

At the State Department, Hillary Clinton praised what amounted to entrapment. “It was a terrific achievement by our law enforcement and intelligence communities, and we will be consulting with our friends and partners around the world about how we can send a very strong message that this kind of action, which violates international norms, must be ended,” she said.

The U.S. will now use the case to call for more severe sanctions against Iran. The current sanctions are considered weak and unlikely to stop Iran from continuing its nuclear energy program. China, Russia, India and Turkey have resisted more stringent sanctions that endanger business deals with Iran.

from metro.co.uk: A British nuclear expert has plunged to his death from the 17th floor of a United Nations HQ, just as top-level talks with Iran began. The 47-year-old official, only identified so far as Timothy H, toppled about 120ft from the UN's building in the Austrian capital yesterday. He is believed to have been a member of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation and was due to take part in the UN-Iran discussions starting today. Police revealed no further details, beyond saying an autopsy would be held. Reports suggest no suicide note had been found.

woman imprisoned for selling to saddam was working for cia

from raw story: A Detroit-area businesswoman serving a six-year sentence in federal prison for selling goods to Iraq during the embargo against Saddam Hussein was unwittingly working for the CIA, the woman's supporters say.

According to NBC affiliate WDIV, Dawn Hanna of Rochester Hills, Michigan, was working for a CIA contractor when she arranged for telecommunications equipment to be sent to the Middle East in 2002 and 2003.

The person claiming to be that contractor, Emad Al-Yawer, says that he was working on a CIA plan to sell communications equipment to Saddam Hussein that would be bugged with espionage instruments. The plan was for the agency to locate and kill the Iraqi dictator.

"The whole idea was, once they get to Saddam, send a smart bomb and blow him [to] smithereens," Al-Yawer told WDIV. Al-Yawer's Jordanian company, Advanced Technical Systems, was the partner with whom Hanna worked to deliver the communications equipment.

These types of missions, and certain Close Air Support operations, require lower altitudes not currently available in Military Operating Areas (MOAs).

from chicago tribune: National Guardsmen from Iowa are trying to fix an Army helicopter that landed in a western Kentucky soybean field after problems arose with its hydraulic system. Chief Warrant Officer Nick Von Muenster of the Iowa National Guard told The Gleaner of Henderson that the Chinook was headed to Fort Campbell, where the crew of five were supposed to train. Iowa National Guard public affairs officer Maj. Mike Wunn said the crew decided to land Sunday afternoon so they didn't risk more problems with the helicopter. Another Chinook landed in the Henderson County field Monday with guardsmen and parts to fix the first helicopter. Land owner David Alexander said losing some of his soybeans is "worth the excitement."

The Department of Defense holds a get-together every two years called Sustaining Military Readiness Conference. The idea: Military readiness depends as much on its ability to train its troops and effectively run its bases as it does on the number of troops and the amount of hardware. The drill will take place in the eastern Mediterranean and will be hosted by Turkey. In the exercise, dubbed Reliant Mermaid X, the three navies will rehearse naval rescue missions and work to improve their level of coordination. Reliant Mermaid X will include search and rescue simulations, quick response to naval emergencies, humanitarian aid in real time and evacuation of 'wounded' personnel from the waters. Eight ships, four helicopters and three search and rescue aircraft from the three countries will participate in the drill. The Israel Navy will be represented by the Lahav and Sufa warships as well as a navy helicopter.

Joe Manchin (D) of West Virginia penned a letter opposing the Pentagon proposal, which they said would hinder a state's effort to respond to a disaster. Current law gives governors control over National Guard forces in their own states as well as any Guard units and Defense Department personnel imported from other states. The letter comes as the Pentagon proposes a legislative fix that would give the secretary of Defense the authority to assist in response to domestic disasters and, consequently, control over units stationed in an affected state.

from computer weekly: The prospective national ID card was broken and cloned in 12 minutes, the Daily Mail revealed this morning. The newspaper hired computer expert Adam Laurie to test the security that protects the information embedded in the chip on the card. Using a Nokia mobile phone and a laptop computer, Laurie was able to copy the data on a card that is being issued to foreign nationals in minutes. He then created a cloned card, and with help from another technology expert, changed all the data on the new card. This included the physical details of the bearer, name, fingerprints and other information. He then rewrote data on the card, reversing the bearer's status from "not entitled to benefits" to "entitled to benefits". He then added fresh content that would be visible to any police officer or security official who scanned the card, saying, "I am a terrorist - shoot on sight." According to the paper, Home Office officials said the foreign nationals card uses the same technology as the UK citizens card that will be issued from 2012. Guy Herbert, general secretary of privacy lobby group NO2ID, said it was a mistake to assume that the Home Office cared about the card, or identity theft or citizens' benefit. He said the Home Office wanted the central database to record citizens' personal details in one place for official convenience. "It is that database which will deliver unprecedented power over our lives to Whitehall and make the Home Office king in Whitehall. The card is an excuse to build the database. If the card is cancelled it already intends to use passports as a secondary excuse," he said. from nytimes: The swine flu virus did not result from a laboratory accident, the World Health Organization said Thursday, working to debunk rumors started by an Australian virologist and circulated by news outlets all over the world. “We took this very seriously,” Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the agency’s deputy director general, said of the virologist’s assertion. “But the evidence suggests that this is a naturally occurring virus, not a laboratory-derived virus.” ... The virus rumor was started by Adrian J. Gibbs, a retired plant virologist from the Australian National University, who previously published work in the journal Science questioning the idea, now accepted, that the 1918 pandemic started as a bird flu... His theory was reported by Bloomberg News on Tuesday. from presstv: Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad has been behind a failed coup in Turkey, the Turkish daily newspaper, Milliyet reports. A secret investigation into detained Ergenekon group members and other studies outside Turkey indicate that Mossad orchestrated the coup plot against the Turkish government, the report says. The Ergenekon group is a Turkish neo-nationalist organization with alleged links to the military, members of which have been arrested on charges of plotting to foment unrest in the country. To that end, the crown jewel of the movement was the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, which saw its opening in May of 2006. Initially, Russia expressed resistance to the BTC pipeline, but viewed it as predictable competition to its near-monopoly on European petroleum delivery, uttering only the occasional diatribe against the project. Operations of the pipeline and two others through Georgia proceeded apace, delivering some 1.5 million bbls/day of oil to western markets with little political or economic friction. Until now. Now, the moronic military move by Mikheil Saakashvili has entirely jeopardized his country's unique strategic situation, causing untold concern for oil markets, producers and foreign investors. As usual, however, the American foreign policy establishment continues to paint Russia as the "unstable" actor in the conflict, but Georgia's neighbors are too well-informed for that nonsense. Besides, most utterances by the Washington circuit are meant for western, and especially American public, consumption, which means they don't generally comport with reality.
